Halloween Reviews Are In, Heres What The Critics Are Saying

The Halloween franchise has come back with a unique take on the material 40 years after the original. Not simply another sequel to the long-running horror series, the new Halloween is a sequel to the original 1978 classic which ignores every other sequel that came before it. How well does this strategy work? Overall, pretty well. Our own Eric Eisenberg gave the film 4.5 stars out of five and says the film is both a worthy tribute, and a subversion, of the original.

Along with co-writer Danny McBride and producers John Carpenter and Jason Blum, Green has managed to create something honestly extraordinary, in that it's simultaneously both a wonderful tribute to the story that started it all, and a post-modern reflection that often giddily subverts everything that's perfect about the legacy of the killer Michael Myers.

For the most part, Eric's opinion is held by the majority of critics. As of this writing, Halloween is holding about an 86% positive rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The vast majority of reviews hold that Halloween is a lean and mean slasher movie that takes what's great about the original and then takes it in a fresh direction. While few are saying it's quite as good as the first Halloween, it is being called a worthy successor. Empire Magazine is one of those singing its praises...

While it doesn't capture the magic of the original, this Halloween brings much-needed closure to a troubled franchise, with Curtis excellent and Michael Myers pleasingly terrifying again.

While Halloween is one of those franchises that, like it's iconic main character, never seems to die, few would argue that the existing sequels are particularly great, though they certainly have their moments. Unfortunately, those sequels have gotten so out of control over the years that really isn't a continuous continuity that makes sense.

This isn't even the first Halloween of its type. The movie called H2O , made two decades ago, had basically the same structure as this one, seeing an older Laurie Strode, played by a returning Jamie Lee Curtis, still trying to come to terms with the events of the original film. Most would agree that film missed the mark. It doesn't seem like this one did.

Gamespot says that while the new movie may ignore the sequels overall, the new Halloween takes all of the best bits from the history of the franchise in order to turn in something which fits perfectly alongside John Carpenter's original.

Halloween doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it takes the best parts of all the films in the franchise, and delivers the ultimate companion piece to Carpenter's 1978 masterpiece.

While the vast majority of reviews look like this, that's not to say that all of them do. There are a few who don't think the new Halloween is nearly as impressive. Forbes, for one, doesn't think that the screenplay of the new Halloween quite lives up to the performances in it, resulting in an uneven ride.

The acting and violence are appropriately impressive, but a choppy screenplay, a lack of real-world logic and mixed messages render this less of an update and more of a glorified fanfiction.

Similarly, the AV Club doesn't feel like the new Halloween is necessarily the best sequel ever. Instead, it's a Halloween sequel, just like all the others.

Just another pale imitation, another bad Halloween sequel watering down the fear factor of the original.

Frequently when we see critics diverge, it's because they focus on different aspects of a film that either worked really well or really didn't. Here, it seems like the exact same material was met with very different reactions. If you've been waiting to see what the new Halloween has to offer, then based simply on the percentages, it seems like there's a good chance you'll get what you want. However, there's a distinct possibility you might be disappointed yet again.

Lupita Nyongo Reveals The Changes She Made To Her Black Panther Character

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going strong for over a decade, with Phase Three serving as its most successful batch of films yet. Plenty of new heroes were brought into the franchise, as the MCU became a more diverse and inclusive place, featuring women and people of color in the process.

This change in the property is perhaps best seen with Ryan Coogler's Black Panther. The acclaimed blockbuster has already become a modern classic, breaking box office records, earning positive reviews, and even award attention. The project is notable for featuring an almost entirely black cast, while also featuring plenty of complex women like Shuri, Ramonda, Okoye, and Nakia. The latter is played by Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o, who recently revealed the way she contributed to the character's development, saying:

I remember talking to Ryan extensively about her. We were both very keen for her to be more than just the love interest, and we wanted her to have her own agency, to occupy her own space, as well as, of course, to support T'Challa. One of the things we worked on was making her part and parcel of the main argument of the story, about whether to keep the borders open. At the heart of it, she's an activist, which is a spirit I relate to.

In addition to playing Nakia with her typical strong acting abilities, it looks like Lupita Nyong'o was also very involved in the character's adaptation from the comics to the silver screen. What resulted was a complicated and nuanced character who functioned both within and outside of the confines of Wakanda's hidden safety.

Lupita Nyong'o's comments to THR will make a great deal of sense for hardcore comic book fans who are familiar with Black Panther and Shuri's roots on the page. Nakia was indeed a romantic interest for T'Challa, but it's a story that has sometimes gone decidedly dark. Her obsession for her King has caused her to become the villainous Malice, which would certainly be an interesting plot twist for a future installment of the Black Panther franchise.

Ultimately this side of Nakia came out by making the Wakandan heroine a fierce spy, and having her love for T'Challa only part of her characterization. Furthermore, she ended up having a role in the fate of her country as a whole. In addition to fighting with Black Panther against Killmonger, she was part of T'Challa's council regarding whether or not Wakanda should come out to the rest of the world.

The decision for T'Challa to share the power and wonder of Wakanda's vibranium-infused society would ultimately factor into the film's credits scene. Furthermore, it directly influenced the events of Avengers: Infinity War. The film's biggest battle was set in the country, with Black Panther characters like Okoye, Shuri, and M'Baku popping back up to fight against Josh Brolin's Mad Titan Thanos. As such, Nakia's role in Ryan Coogler's movie extends far beyond her screentime.

Speaking of screen time, Black Panther fans were disappointed and confused when Nakia was absent from the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Wakanda was a major setting for the film, but there were a handful of Black Panther characters that simply never factored into the narrative. For instance, Angela Bassett's Ramonda was noticeably absent, as well as Daniel Kaluuya's W'Kabi.

While the Russo Brothers previously stated they knew the exact location of Nakia, that's information that the directors haven't shared with the public. As such, hardcore Marvel fans are left to speculate and theorize regarding her whereabouts, and whether or not she and the other absent Wakandans were able to survive Thanos' finger snap of death (now known as The Decimation).

Wakanda is likely going to be in a precarious place when the timeline picks up in Avengers: Endgame. T'Challa's reign on the Throne proved depressingly short, as the Black Panther was one of the many characters to faded to dust once Thanos was able to accrue the Infinity Stones. As such, the country is in dire need of a new ruler. And as far as the audience knows, the heart-shaped herb that contains the power of the Panther was destroyed by Killmonger.

Shuri seems like the most obvious choice to take the Throne in Wakanda, given her family's bloodline. However, it's unclear if Letitia Wright's character survived The Decimation, as she was last seen battling Corvus Glaive and trying to protect Vision. The first trailer for Avengers: Endgame heavily implied Shuri got dusted, so could Nakia factor into the succession? Of course, the trailer could be throwing the fans off, with Shuri actually surviving Thanos' snap. We'll just have to wait and see.

It should be fascinating to see what comes next from the Black Panther franchise, given the first film's massive success. Ryan Coogler's blockbuster has become a staple of pop culture, making Marvel Studios a small fortune at the box office, while also being an important cultural moment. Marvel championing a black superhero broke new ground, and the film's insane success seemingly proves that audiences respond to inclusion onscreen.

Before T'Challa is given a second solo movie, Chadwick Boseman's signature Marvel character must somehow be revived from his fate at the end of Infinity War. While The Decimation was arguably the most devastating plot twist to come out of the MCU, it seems inevitable that Thanos' apocalyptic attack would eventually be reversed. Characters like Black Panther, Spider-Man, and The Wasp are still early in their tenures in the shard universe, so it stands to reason that they would be saved, allowing things to go back to normal. But how?

Ryan Coogler is set to return for Black Panther 2, which is good news for fans of the young franchise. As such, Lupita Nyong'o will once again be able to collaborate with the director, and decide the direction Nakia will go in future appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Nakia's fate will hopefully be revealed when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters April 26th, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

8 Team-Ups We'd Love to See in Avengers: Endgame

8 Team-Ups We'd Love to See in Avengers: Endgame

There is so much to look forward to in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, especially considering it is the culmination of the entire MCU thus far. The highly-anticipated film will find the Avengers dealing with the fallout of their failure to stop Thanos, as well as looking into a way to undo his massacre throughout the universe. Action, high-stakes, and drama are all right there in that previous sentence, but if there is one thing you can count on in an Avengers films, it should be awesome team-ups.

The MCU is filled with larger-than-life personalities and when they clash, it creates sparks. That's the bread and butter of the MCU and it was never more savory than in Avengers: Infinity War. Endgame may be working with fewer pieces, but there's still ample room to produce some fun, weird, and dramatic team-ups. I mean did you see Rocket and War Machine in that trailer? It was rad as hell!

We already know some characters like Black Widow and Hawkeye will be pairing up at times, but here are some other options that I would love to see play out on screen.

Captain America And Iron ManThis is a big one. Fans have been waiting to see these two reunited since their friendship crumbled in Captain America: Civil War. Their division is a big reason why Thanos was able to win in the first place, and if they want any hope in stopping him then they'll have to bury the hatchet. Unfortunately, not telling your friend that his parents were murdered by your brainwashed best friend is a tough hurdle to leap. The two pillars of the MCU should absolutely be working out their troubles, which should make for plenty of drama and some real kickass moments when they finally make up.

Hawkeye And Ant-ManThe Avengers team consists of gods, wizards, kings, geniuses, and super soldiers, which is why Ant-Man and Hawkeye seem like such a natural pairing. Take away their tools, and these two are just regular dudes who happen to know the most powerful beings on the planet. Perhaps more importantly, the two of them are also family men, and gave up their freedom so that they could stay under house arrest with their families. They share something that none of the other Avengers can really relate to. It's also highly likely that both of them lost some of or their entire families in The Snap, which means they should know exactly what the other is going through. Plus, Ant-Man can ride another arrow! That should be reason enough for a team-up.

Black Widow And NebulaI never would have imagined in a million years that Nebula would survive long enough to be this important of a character in the MCU. However, here we are! She's been right there alongside the Avengers suited up and ready to save the galaxy. It's awesome, and I'm really excited to see how she interacts with Earth's heroes. When it comes to pairings, Black Widow might just be the most interesting. They have both suffered from abuse, but took their pain in opposite directions. Widow eventually learned how to become a selfless hero while Nebula focused on revenge. It'd be interesting to see how the two of them interact, but there's no question they'd kick a lot of butt together.

Iron Man And RocketBack during the wait for Avengers: Infinity War, this was probably one of the most requested team-ups. Unfortunately, there wasn't really a way to get Tony Stark and Rocket in the same room during that film, but they absolutely will be meeting in Endgame. Who doesn't want to see these two butt heads? They are both snarky geniuses with big personalities, so there would certainly be sparks. Plus, Rocket just might be smarter than Tony, which would make for some humorous one-upmanship. Rocket might even have some ideas on how to upgrade Tony's suit, and it'd be rad to see the two of them unloading their arsenal on Thanos -- if Rocket isn't busy doing that with War Machine.

Captain Marvel And Captain AmericaCaptain Marvel is getting into position to be the new lead of the MCU, and I would imagine there will be some passing of the torch moments for her. While she looks to be hitting it off with Thor, Captain America is the Avenger I really want to see her team-up with. Obviously, the two of them are captains, which makes for some fun wordplay, but they have other similarities as well. Both of them have a background in the armed forces, they share a strong sense of right and wrong, they're stubborn, and they are beautiful blonde people. I think the two of them would really get along and it'd be great to see a mutual respect or admiration build over the course of the film. This is probably the last time Carol Danvers can spend time with the original Avengers, so I hope she gets to know Steve Rogers while she still can.

Iron Man And HawkeyeHere's a pairing you don't see every day, despite the fact these two have been in the MCU since Phase One. Iron Man and Hawkeye don't hang out much, and the one time they did, they were beating each other up. As much as there is a divide between Cap and Tony, there's likely still beef between Tony and Clint. The last time they saw each other was fairly intense, as Clint drilled into Tony for his mistakes after Clint was locked in the Raft with the rest of Team Cap. They didn't part on the best of terms, and it'd be interesting to see if there is still any leftover resentment -- especially from Clint, who looks really unhappy in the trailers for Endgame.

Hulk And Black WidowI will fully admit to being onboard the Bruce Banner X Black Widow train, which is not a popular ride in the MCU community. What can I say? I like the out-of-left-field pairing; I think it's unique, and even though it was pretty rushed, I just enjoy watching the two of them together. We haven't seen this relationship develop much at all since Age of Ultron and it looks like the two had some scenes cut from Avengers: Infinity War. My hope is that the two of them can spend some time together in Endgame and that relationship can finally advance forward. Bruce Banner has a Hulk problem and Natasha has always been a soft spot for the Green Goliath. Whether they end up together or not, Endgame might be the film that devotes enough time to this relationship to get more fans onboard.

Thor, Hulk, And Captain MarvelI can't think of anything that would send the movie into more applause than seeing Thor, Hulk, and Captain Marvel team-up in a fight against Thanos. That's an idea that sells itself. It features the three most powerful Avengers going head-to-head against the Mad Titan over the fate of the universe. That would be an action set piece in all its glory. It's worth noting that that the three of them are not seen during the Avengers slow-mo walk at the end of the latest trailer, and my theory is that they are off on their own mission as a Thanos Kill Squad. However, Marvel trailers are never to be fully trusted and it's possible that the were simply edited out of the trailer but will be there for the final movie. Still though, it'd make for one epic fight scene.

If I had an infinite amount of time, I would probably have ended up listing every combination possibility for Endgame because I love just seeing these characters talk and hang out. The backbone of the MCU is the characters and matching them up can result unexpected chemistry. Who could have predicted the bromance between Thor and Rocket? It's weird pairings like this that make the MCU films fun to watch 22 films later and let's hope they bring out all the stops in Endgame.
