Bradley Cooper Didn't Actually Know How To Sing Before A Star Is Born

If you didn't know any better prior to seeing A Star is Born, you might think that Bradley Cooper was a professional musician. That's how convincing he is the film as singer Jackson Maine. But Bradley Cooper is not Jared Leto; he didn't come into the role with that kind of extensive music background. In fact, Bradley Cooper didn't actually know how to sing before A Star is Born, as he explained:

I had no idea how to breathe. I knew nothing about singing --- nothing. It's such a difficult art form to sing in front of people, because you lose your breath right away when you're nervous. ... I had great teachers. Lukas Nelson [is] an incredible musician who I worked with --- he and his band [Promise of the Real, worked with me for] hours and hours and hours and hours. I think it's because I was a good student and listened to great teachers [that] I was able to do it.

It's one thing to sing a tune in the shower and another entirely to really sing and seem believable as a professional musician on screen and in front of an audience. As Bradley Cooper told NPR, he knew nothing about singing and needed to learn the fundamentals, like how to breathe while doing it and dealing with nerves so that he could do this role.

So Bradley Cooper had to go from knowing nothing about singing to needing to learn how to breathe while doing it, to being able to do it well, to singing in front of an audience. That is quite the progression and it sounds like the actor had a crash course on singing to get him where he needed to be.

Bradley Cooper sought the help of real life rockers Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real to make him into a convincing rock star, and judging by the final film, they taught him well. Plus, as he says, he was a good student, eager to listen and learn.

Hearing how much went into this preparation and the place Bradley Cooper started from, you can see why, in the early stages, he considered getting rocker Jack White to star in the film before he decided to take on the role himself, in his directorial debut no less.

Bradley Cooper's success in the role is made all the more impressive considering that he needed to be convincing as a singer opposite a real singer in Lady Gaga. That and he sung live in the film, as Lady Gaga insisted, versus filming and then singing over playback. In many ways, he basically needed to become a singer for this movie, in addition to changing his voice an entire octave for the role and directing everything.

To have to do all that and have his performance, and the movie as a whole, be such so successful is testament to Bradley Cooper's talents and work ethic. You can see why so many people think A Star is Born is going to do quite well for itself when the Academy Award nominations come out.

For years, DC has been known for the strength of its animation. From Batman: The Dark Knight Returns to Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, movies produced in the animated DC realm have encompassed wide ranges of genres and styles. The latest project on deck is Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, which features Nicolas Cage as the voice of Superman. Many fans have waited decades for a Nic Cage Superman performance, but Cage recently opened up about the project to admit that it's a very different take on the Man of Steel than what he would've done with Tim Burton back in the 1990s. The actor explained:

It wasn't really the version that Tim Burton and I had in mind, but it was just fun. It was terrific. It was just nice to be involved in something my kid loves and we got to do it together.

Right off the bat, it's interesting to note that Nic Cage's take on Superman in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies isn't all that reminiscent of the Superman that he would've played in Tim Burton's Superman Lives. The Raising Arizona star's ill-fated take on the Man of Steel has become iconic to geeks who know about that never-made film, and the prospect of him finally getting to voice Supes in an animated DC adventure seemed like a great way to bring that incarnation of the character to life. Nevertheless, this is a different take on Superman that Nicolas Cage enjoyed because it allowed him to tap into something more family friendly, which would let him watch Teen Titans Go! To The Movies with his son, who is actually named Kal-El after Superman and voices young Bruce Wayne in the film.

That makes a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things. Though we never actually saw Tim Burton's take on Superman (aside from leaked photos and behind-the-scenes tests that they did on suits), what we do know about the movie suggests that Superman Lives would've had a darker edge consistent with the style of the director. With Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, Cage got to take a more lighthearted approach to the Man of Tomorrow, and per his remarks to USA Today, it was fun to embrace something with a family-friendly tone.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is currently in theaters. Check it out to see the offbeat versions of these DC icons for yourself, and if you're waiting for something a bit more adult-oriented, then you can watch out for the DCEU's solo Aquaman movie later this year on December 21. As for Nic Cage, he's not done voicing superheroes yet, as he's also lined up to voice Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which will premiere on December 14.

Most would agree that the ending of Avengers: Infinity War was absolutely insane. Many fans had trouble believing what we were seeing the first time we saw it. However, Kevin Smith believes he knows how it could have been better. During a recent video cast, Smith talked about a conversation he had with his friend, Comic Book Men's Walter Flannigan, who thought Avengers: Infinity War was a great movie, but thought the film's post-credits sequence was going to go in a very different direction. According to Smith...

I said, 'What did you think of the ending?' He goes, 'I really liked it, but for one moment, I thought when they were going in on the beeper, that it was gonna be the number four. And right there I started crying because I was like, 'We missed a better movie!' Could you imagine if they were just like 'four,' and we're like, 'Oh fuck, they're fucking in the universe! Here comes the Baxter Building, bitch.'

The final scene of Avengers: Infinity War shows Nick Fury sending a message on a pager. The camera slowly zooms in on it to reveal the logo of one Captain Marvel, a character we will meet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year. However, it would have ended a very different film, as Kevin Smith says, if the logo we had seen had been a number four.

Seeing a reference to the Fantastic Four at the end of Avengers: Infinity War would have been an epic moment for more than one reason. It would have been literally the last thing anybody in the theater would have expected to see. The film rights for those particular characters still don't belong to Marvel, and while the recent business dealings between Disney and Fox could eventually mean the Fantastic Four will find their way into the MCU, nobody expects to see anything like that happen in the near future.

If something had been happening behind the scenes that had been kept quiet all this time, Marvel fans in the theater would have come unglued if the post-credits scene had revealed it. Of course, that would also mean that the Fantastic Four were made part of Avengers 4 without anybody knowing, and that sounds pretty close to impossible, or at least like it would have been a major headache to work out, even if the deal between Disney and Fox had gone through already.

Of course, this idea does make one realize that when and if the Fantastic Four actually do make their appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it could be big. While the characters have had something of a rough go of it on the big screen, perhaps joining the MCU is exactly what they need.

Instead, we'll see Captain Marvel try to save the day in Avengers 4. What the future holds for the Fantastic Four, only time will tell.
