Theaters In The U.S. Are Breaking A Box Office Record In 2018

Thanos snapped half the world away in 2018, but the box office not only survived, it thrived to set an all-time record.

The domestic box office just hit $11 billion earlier in the week, with three weekends still to go in 2018. That puts it on track to potentially reach $12 billion, which would certainly be a record. The record at this point is actually $11.4 billion, which was hit in 2016.

At this point, 2018 revenue is already 6 percent of that record-setting year, THR reports, and a full 10 percent head of the $11.1 billion from 2017. The North American box office hit $11 billion faster than ever this year. It took until December 30 last year, and Dec. 26 in 2016, and Dec. 29 in 2015.

Box office prognosticators are estimating that the final days of the year could bring in something close to the $832 million that 2014 saw from December 12-31. That was the last year, before 2018, that there was no Star Wars film in the December marketplace. If this year matches those stats, the revenue for 2018 could hit $11.8 billion and even maybe maybe maybe reach $12 billion.

So who needs December Star Wars movies, eh? (Don't answer that, Solo.)

Clearly we still need Marvel and Disney, since the top films at the North American box office in 2018 (so far) were Black Panther ($700M domestic), worldwide leader Avengers: Infinity War, Incredibles 2, Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, and Deadpool 2.

Potential domestic box office big-hitters still to come this year are Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns, and Bumblebee. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse just did its part for the box office with a $35.4 million opening.

Early prediction: 2019 is going to leave 2018 in the dust, record-breaker or not. This coming year has Avengers: Endgame, which is somehow even more anticipated than Infinity War; plus Captain Marvel; Spider-Man: Far From Home; Aladdin; The Lion King; Dumbo; Toy Story 4; Frozen 2; Shazam!; It: Chapter Two; Godzilla: King of the Monsters; John Wick 3; How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World; plus, Star Wars: Episode IX.

BOOM.

There's more, too. As much as consumers are constantly hit on all sides with new ways to view entertainment, we still keep heading out to the movies (and theaters keep raising the prices, 'cause they know we'll keep paying).

Here's the list of what we know is headed to theaters in 2019 at this point. Do you have an early prediction for the top movie of 2019? Just kidding. It's Endgame. Unless it's Toy Story 4. Or [Name Your Choice]. Will it be Star Wars: Episode IX, or will the frustrations with The Last Jedi keep fans from heading out to the theater this time next year?

Why Thanos Will Be More Interesting Than Other MCU Villains, According To Infinity Wars Writers

Needless to say, there will be spoilers in this article, so stop reading now if you want to go into Avengers: Infinity War knowing nothing.

He is the "Big Bad" of Avengers: Infinity War (and possibly Avengers 4... we still don't know for sure). And Marvel Studios has been teasing his arrival for years. But Thanos (Josh Brolin), the Mad Titan, has really only been shown as a ruler on a throne, or a giant purple dude who has a Gauntlet in storage, and plans on "doing" something himself. Hardly intimidating. So when CinemaBlend traveled to Atlanta to visit the set of Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War, we asked screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely how they plan to help Thanos stand out from previous villains in the MCU, and they told us:

Christopher Markus: Well, part of it is motivation, where if you have a villain who just wants to kill somebody or just wants to take over the world because it seems like a fun thing to do... that guy isn't very interesting. He's pathetic. But, we take this from [Thanos creator Jim] Starlin. Thanos is an amoral philosopher. He's not the Devil -- although he does sometimes have the Devil standing next to him. We wanted that all the way through. To have a villain with understandable motivations and emotions. Thanos has family. Thanos has two daughters that we know of. Thanos has 8 million back stories in the comics but they're all kind of sad.Stephen McFeely: What I want to point out, is that my favorite two [villains] in the entire MCU are Loki and Kilgrave, because he's creepy and awful, but really cares in a strange way.

The screenwriters went on to elaborate that they like the fact that some characters in the MCU who are painted as villains don't really SEE themselves as evil. They have a point to make, and it sets them at odds with the heroes, but they understand their motivations, and they think they are right. This sounds a bit like Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) from Black Panther. And it will establish a thread for Thanos. Stephen McFeely continued:

Chris [Markus] is right, they both have these weird family relationships. So Thanos will get the benefit of both of those things. He's got daughters that he clearly has to deal with, and James [Starlin] did a nice job of setting the table for us, but we're certainly going to run with that. And screen time. This is not an origin story. Very often, in the screen writing weeds, we're trying to get a character up and off the ground, and so the bad guy tends to be a foil for the development of the hero, and that's not the case here. If anything, it's the opposite. Our heroes are foils for the villain, whose story we need to tell at large.

In the process, they also wanted to create an actual character, and not just an empty threat. Stephen McFeely summarized:

One of the big challenges is how to make sure he's not just a relentless machine collecting stones like he's going shopping. So we want to give him a full, weighted emotional story. You can kind of say this is Thanos' origin story, so that he will get the weight of any of the previous heroes in terms of the decisions he has to make in order to get what he wants.

And from the looks of these trailers, they certainly are telling Thanos' story on a large scale.

Avengers: Endgame TV Spot Reveals Which Character Was Originally Cut From The Trailer

Avengers: Endgame is just days away, and the excitement is palpable. Marvel fans have been waiting a calendar year for the movie to arrive, following the shocking twist ending of Infinity War. Marvel Studios originally kept its secrets to allow for Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel to hit theaters, but the marketing campaign for Phase Three's final installment has seriously ramped up.

When the second trailer for Endgame arrived, there was a shot that threw fans for a loop. It featured some surviving heroes outside the Avengers Facility, and there was a noticeable gap between Bruce Banner and Rhodes, likely a character that was cut. But a new TV spot has revealed who that hidden character was: Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts.

Pepper Potts may not have had a major role in Avengers: Infinity War, but she's set pop back up when Endgame arrives in theaters. What's more, it looks like she'll be with the rest of the surviving heroes when something arrives from above. But what could it be?

Pepper's increased presence in Avengers: Endgame was teased by the recent round of character posters, as Gwyneth Paltrow's signature Marvel persona got her very own. But Pepper has been mostly absent from the trailers, at least until now. While her role is still largely a mystery, moviegoers can expect Pepper to show up in the Avengers facility and interact with the surviving heroes. Let's just hope that includes some unexpected choices like Rocket.

Of course, there's always the possibility that this clip with Pepper is a red herring by The Russo Brothers. The co-directors previously admitted to adding fake footage to trailers, to help advertise their blockbusters without giving away their contents. So perhaps Pepper never makes her way to join the Avengers, and has a story more contained to her location in New York City.

Just how Pepper will appear in Avengers: Endgame has been a heavily theorized subject. Many comic book fans are hoping that she'll suit up in her own Iron Man armor, taking on the mantle of Rescue. There were also theories that she could be the one to save her fiancee and Nebula. That remains to be seen, although her new appearance in the recent TV spot is definitely exciting.

Welcome back, Ms. Potts. Gwyneth Paltrow's character debuted in the very first MCU movie, when Iron Man arrived back in 2007. It's a relief to know that she didn't fade to dust as a result of The Decimation, although how meaty her role in Endgame is remains to be seen.
