How Kevin Feige Feels About James Cameron's Blunt Avengers Comment

Recently, director James Cameron had some less than flattering things to say about superhero movies. He voiced a hope that the moviegoing public would hit "Avenger fatigue" at some point soon, because, while he loves the movies, he felt that they tended to tell the same story over and over again, and he hopes that other stories can be given the spotlight in the future. Over the weekend, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige was asked about Cameron's comments. It's the brief "uh" that started the statement that makes it art. Kevin Feige needs a beat to consider how he's going to respond to Vulture as they quoted James Cameron's words at him. Then he sees the glimmer of light that has been left for him and he grabs it. Well played sir.

Nobody wants to get into a war of words like this. The idea that the superhero movie is becoming too large a presence at the movie theater isn't a new idea and this won't be the last we hear about it. At the same time, there really isn't a polite way to argue against James Cameron's comments, as the language does come across a little harsh. Here's what he said...

I'm hoping we'll start getting 'Avenger' fatigue here pretty soon. Not that I don't love the movies. It's just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It's like, oy.

While James Cameron's language is tough, he also says he loves the movies, and he wouldn't need to make such a qualifying statement if he was intending to be brutal on them. He probably doesn't mean to come across in quite the way that he does, which may also be why Kevin Feige decided against engaging. He doesn't know what James Cameron really means hearing a quote out of context.

Still, there are people who do hold the current crop of superhero movies in fairly low regard. Zoe Saldana, who works both in the MCU and with James Cameron as part of the Avatar movies, has herself recently spoken about the way that some have been critical of the fact that she makes such movies.

At some point, we likely will hit a point of Avenger fatigue and superhero movies, while they may never go away entirely, will probably become a smaller part of the landscape than they are now. Having said that, there's little indication that day is going to come anytime soon. Avengers: Infinity War, the movie with more hyper-gonadal males without families than one movie has ever seen, comes out Friday.

So Christopher Nolan's Next Movie Won't Really Be Like North By Northwest Meets Inception?

It's been about a year and a half since the release of Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, and the acclaimed director's next film is still shrouded in mystery. Well, at least it was until new reports claimed that it was a romantic thriller that was a cross between North by Northwest and Inception. It was a concept that intrigued film fans, but it sounds like it's back to the guessing games because a new report claims that the last rumor is false.

Christopher Nolan is one of the most prestigious directors working today. He's the mind behind excellent movies like The Prestige and Memento, and gained mainstream popularity for his work on The Dark Knight Trilogy. He was finally nominated for an Oscar on his last film, 2017's Dunkirk, and since then movie fans have been eagerly awaiting to find out more details about his next project.

It seemed like those details had finally come when a report from Production Weekly claimed that Christopher Nolan's new film was described "as a romantic thriller, North by Northwest in tone meets Inception." Inception blew people's minds back in 2010, and North by Northwest is said to be one of the greatest films ever made, so it's a pretty cool mashup on paper.

However, it sounds like the update was off-base. A source told IGN the information provided by Production Weekly was inaccurate. No further elaboration was given, so it sounds like we are all back in the dark on this one.

On one hand, this can be seen as good news. Christopher Nolan has many strengths, but I don't know that I would say that romance is one of them. His films usually come off as being a bit colder and focused primarily on the drama or psychosis of his main character. That's not to say he does't have a great romantic thriller in him, but it's a bit of uncharted territory for Nolan.

For those who may not know, North by Northwest is a 1959 thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. It followed Cary Grant as a man with mistaken identity who winds up running across the country as he's swept up into a conspiracy. Even if you've never seen the film, you've probably seen the above image of Cary Grant running from an airplane recreated a dozen different times in pop culture.

Inception is one of Christopher Nolan's most well-known films, and it starred Leonardo DiCaprio as a thief who steals information by entering people's dreams.

At least we know one thing about Christopher Nolan's next movie: the release date. The movie is currently slated to arrive in theaters on July 17, 2020. There are lot of movies to look forward to until then, so be sure to learn about them all in our handy 2019 movie release guide.

The Rock Drops First Look At Vanessa Kirbys Hobbs And Shaw Character

The Rock's Fast and Furious spinoff is currently filming, and the man has brought us our first look at another new character. Previously we got a look at how Idris Elba will look when he takes the screen as the villain of Hobbs and Shaw, but now we have a look at somebody else a little more "in the family." Vanessa Kirby will be playing the sister of Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw. Meet Hattie.

It seems that if you're a member of the Shaw family, you're destined to be involved in the law, either enforcing it or breaking it. While Deckard Shaw and his brother Owen entered the world of the Fast and Furious series as criminals, Hattie Shaw is actually an MI6 agent. Based on the fact that the Shaw matriarch, as played by Helen Mirren in The Fate of the Furious also has a tenuous relationship with honesty, it makes it seem like Hattie Shaw may be the black sheep of the family, potentially making her the most interesting member of the Shaw clan.

It seems that while Hattie Shaw may be related to Deckard, she'll have a closer relationship with Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs, something that won't sit well with Deckard. Clearly, this is where some of the film's more humorous elements will come in. While Hobbs and Shaw will be working together in the new movie that is named for them, it seems clear that, like in The Fate of the Furious, this will be a relationship of convenience, not something either party is all that thrilled about.

Hobbs and Shaw's chemistry in the previous film came from the way the two were so entertaining in the way they hated each other. The two might respect each other, but that doesn't mean Deckard will enjoy the fact that his sister is hanging out with Hobbs.

Vanessa Kirby is looking great in Dwayne Johnson's Instagram picture. She stole her portion of the show earlier this year in Mission: Impossible - Fallout as a woman on the other side of the law, so seeing her playing one of the good guys in a similarly action-heavy franchise should be just as much fun.

Of course, the tables may be turned in the movie as well, as we've heard that Hattie Shaw won't be the only sibling that we'll meet in the new film. The word is Hobbs' mother and brothers will also play into the story in some way. Maybe Shaw will end up paling around with them as a way to drive his partner equally nuts.

Hobbs and Shaw will hit theaters next year as a sort of stopgap for the Fast and Furious franchise, as the already planned ninth entry in the series was originally set to be released in 2019, but has been delayed.
