Ben Mendelsohn Has The Best Description Of The Skrulls In Captain Marvel

While the Skrulls play a vital role in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel, their role in the marketing has not been significant so far. Sure, they've shown up a few times, but there's been only one line of dialogue, and it wasn't until last night that it was even mentioned they shapeshift. We have a clear idea of what's going on with the titular hero, but not much about the villains she is facing down. Fortunately, Ben Mendelsohn delivered everything you need to know about the alien villains from the upcoming blockbuster in a single, perfect quote last year, and we can share it with you now:

I'm Talos. I'm the battle commander of the Skrulls. I take it most of you know who Skrulls are? We kind of rule the shit. Most of the rest of the Marvel comic universe are punks basically. And I guess to quote Snoop Dogg, 'We are the shiznit.' We stand above. I mean, look, we can be anyone, and we're stronger than the rest of them. Basically that's it. Yeah, we're maligned, we're misunderstood. But, you know, we're Skrulls. We're Skrullin. Any other questions?

This epic bit of philosophizing about the Skrulls role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was delivered on set last year as Ben Mendelsohn sat down to talk about the movie with a group of reporters invited to visit the production -- a group of which I was part. The actor was in full makeup for the interview, and while sort of weaving in and out of character he had a blast answering questions, starting with the above perfect response to the basic question "What is your role in the movie?"

If Ben Mendelsohn's quote isn't quite sufficient for you in explaining who the Skrulls are, their story begins in the pages of Marvel Comics from the early 1960s -- where they were introduced as a recurring extraterrestrial foe for the Fantastic Four. Their role in the universe eventually expanded, and they eventually became a problem for many of all of the heroes given their very special skill: they have the ability to transform into anything.

They are introduced in Captain Marvel because while they have a lot of enemies around the universe, their greatest foes are the Kree -- a species of which the lead character is a part at the start of the film. They have been fighting a war for centuries known as the Kree-Skrull War, and it's in the midst of the conflict that Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) will begin to remember some very important parts of her past.

Sadly the actors and filmmakers were very tight-lipped when it came to discussing the relationship between Talos and Captain Marvel, and the plans that the Skrulls have on Earth in the movie. However, producer Jonathan Schwartz did heap praise on the work Ben Mendelsohn does in the film and the fun that comes as a result of his character's ability to transform. Said the filmmaker,Ben kind of plays the face of the Skrulls, the leader of the Skrulls, and that's Talos. Over the course of the movie he'll shapeshift a little bit, so we'll get to see him in human form... I think it's sort of fun to show off both the Skrulls powers and Ben's range as an actor because he's very different in all of those parts. It's been super fun to watch.

Starring Brie Larson, Ben Mendelsohn, Samuel L. Jackson, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law, Captain Marvel is getting closer and closer to its highly anticipated release. Oscar-Winning Bohemian Rhapsody Editor Wishes He Could Recut Mocked Meeting Scene

Bohemian Rhapsody has found incredible success as the highest-earning music biopic worldwide, and as a four-time Oscar winner. The movie centering around Queens history as a band swept most of the technical categories at the Academy Awards, including Best Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Film Editing. The latter has been most heavily criticized online for its win, especially for the cut of the bands first meeting with manager John Reid, which became a viral example of Oscar "injustice" on Twitter.

John Ottman, who was Bohemian Rhapsodys editor, received a ton of honors during awards season. He was recently told of a viral video specifically criticizing the editing of that band meeting scene. Here was his reaction:

Oh my God! Wow. I didnt know about that, but I know why thats out there. Whenever I see [the scene], I want to put a bag over my head. Because thats not my aesthetic. If theres ever an extended version of the film where I can put a couple scenes back, I will recut that scene!

The Bohemian Rhapsody editor told The Washington Post that the restaurant scene was one of the few scenes shot by Dexter Fletcher shortly after previous director Bryan Singer was fired from the film. Some of the storyline was reordered, leading to a reshoot of the meeting between the band and their manager outside a London pub. Check out the scene found all over Twitter after the Oscars in all of its glory below:

Feeling that whiplash? The flashy cut switches in this scene in particular caused an outcry over the internet, all questioning how the movie won an Oscar for Best Editing. John Ottman said he was under pressure to get the first act of Bohemian Rhapsody moving quickly, so some scenes ended up looking this way.

Later, when the movie was screened for test audiences, their feedback indicated they enjoyed learning about the band in their early years. So Ottman went back over those scenes and slowed them down. However, due to time constraints, he didn't get to do the same for the now much-mocked meeting scene. The editor certainly seems to regret it now looking back, per his recent words.

A recent video by Thomas Flight breaks down just why the Bohemian Rhapsody restaurant scene in question, and many of the other dialogue scenes, have terrible editing. Take a look:

You know theres something wrong when a simple dialogue scene has 60 cuts in under two minutes more than an action sequence in Transformers: The Last Knight. The video breaks down some major problems with the editing in Bohemian Rhapsody, along with why it may have been recognized for it by the Academy because its noticeable. Though the YouTuber notes great movie editing is often not easy to detect.

The 2019 Best Film Editing honor isnt the only Oscar winner that has been criticized this year. Best Picture going to Green Book has also perplexed moviegoers, along with First Man over Avengers: Infinity War for Best Visual Effects.

Is Detective Pikachu Already Getting A Sequel?

Detective Pikachu has only been in theaters for about a week and half at this point, but in that short time it has proven to be a real all-around success. Beyond pretty good reviews (arguably great for a video game movie), Detective Pikachu has had a solid box office showing-- particularly internationally. So it would come as little surprise if it got a sequel and according to a new report, thats exactly whats happening.

According to Comicbook.com, Legendary is moving forward with a sequel to Detective Pikachu. The idea being that the sequel, which is in the early stages of development at this point, would be the next step for the Pokmon universe on film before expanding out the franchise into other Pokmon movies beyond the Detective Pikachu series.

Apparently as Detective Pikachu developed, The Pokmon Company became more comfortable with characters and elements of the franchise being translated onscreen. That gave it ideas and confidence that a more expansive Pokmon world could be rendered cinematically in an effective fashion. If Detective Pikachu was a proof of concept, it did its job.

This news should be viewed as a rumor for now, until there is more concrete information like an official announcement. But it certainly Detective Pikachu getting a sequel would certainly make sense on multiple levels.

As far as dollars and cents are concerned, even though it released in the massive wake of Avengers: Endgame, Detective Pikachu has found an audience. The film debuted to $54.4 million domestic and has made $94.3 million to date according to Box Office Mojo. Overseas the Ryan Reynolds film has enjoyed two straight weekends atop the charts, earning over $196 million for a worldwide box office that is closing in on $300 million.

As previously mentioned, Detective Pikachu has received good reviews that although arent quite gushing. But it still cements it as about the best-reviewed video game movie ever. The movie also fared favorably with audiences, earning an A- CinemaScore.

Beyond those more quantitative metrics, there is the fact that star Ryan Reynolds has expressed interest in returning to the world for another entry. He also touched on the potential that the world of Pokmon offers and on that point he is absolutely right. Detective Pikachu did the one job it had to by showing that Pokmon and live-action humans could be believable together on film and it nailed it.

That means that all the wide world of the property could make its way to the big screen with tons of possibilities and a clear path to a cinematic universe. But the first step towards that, if this rumor is to be believed, is Detective Pikachu 2.

My one major question about a potential Detective Pikachu 2 is how does such a film maintain the same conceit as the first film, specifically, the relationship between a talking Pikachu and Justice Smiths Tim. At the end of the film it is revealed that Tims father Harry had his memory wiped and was fused with his Pikachu, thereby allowing him to talk to Tim.

So with that condition reversed by Mewtwo at the end of the movie, a sequel would presumably not have a talking Pikachu. I think it can still work, but it will be a change. Maybe a sequel would have Tim becoming a detective alongside his dad, played by Ryan Reynolds, and his Pikachu and the three can crack an even bigger case together.
