Why Christopher Robin Is Using Winnie The Pooh's Iconic Voice

Disney has hit us with a major one-two punch of nostalgia this week; first came the trailer for Mary Poppins Returns and then came the trailer for Christopher Robin, knocking us into a puddle of emotion. For many people, the highlight of the Christopher Robin trailer, and the moment when we all got something in our eye, was when Pooh, who is being reprised by Disney veteran Jim Cummings, said "Christopher Robin." Having Jim Cummings return to the role his voice is synonymous with was critical to bringing this character to life for director Marc Forster, as he explained:

He lived this character for over 30 years, so for him, this is, sort of, part of his being at this point. It was important to me [to have] this nostalgic element of the voice and the feel. It was very important.

It is a good thing that having Jim Cummings voice Winnie the Pooh was important to Marc Forster, because I shudder to think of the alternative. If Christopher Robin had turned around in that trailer and Pooh had spoken in any voice but Jim Cummings', I suspect it would have inspired a major revolt and not the immediate outpouring of love and emotion it has enjoyed thus far. This is because, as Marc Forster told ET, Jim Cummings has lived with this character for 30 years, voicing Pooh in the animated movies, The New Adventures of Winnie The Pooh TV series, the 2011 film and even the Kingdom Hearts video games. He is Winnie the Pooh. This is a film built on nostalgia, bringing Pooh back into the lives of so many who are now grown up and taking them and Christopher Robin himself back to the simplicity and wonder of childhood. Marc Forster also said that this will be a very emotional movie (you don't say). The nostalgia and the emotion that comes with it only works with Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh.

Now as far as I'm concerned, it shouldn't even have been a question from the second this film was greenlit who would voice Pooh. But sadly, in this day and age, voice actors don't get as much work in big films. Prominent voice roles in animated fare often goes to live-action actors so the studio can slap a familiar name on the poster, something that kids could care less about. And despite his insanely long list of voice credits (seriously, look at his IMDb), Jim Cummings is not a household name. I know I'm fighting a losing battle in this belief, but at least, in this one instance, Disney knew that the familiarity and power of a voice was more important than the power of a name.

Jim Cummings will be joined by a new group of names voicing the residents of the Hundred Acre Wood, including Chris O'Dowd as Tigger, Toby Jones as Owl, Peter Capaldi as Rabbit, Brad Garrett as Eeyore and Nick Mohammed as Piglet. They join Ewan McGregor and Hayley Atwell for the Winnie the Pooh-meets-Hook film, Christopher Robin, arriving to melt our cold, jaded hearts on August 3.

The Toughest Part Of Making Robin Hood, According To Jamie Foxx

When shooting a movie as action packed as director Otto Bathurst's Robin Hood remake, things can get pretty tough. Stunts need to be properly set up and executed, with dialogue-heavy scenes needing to also be slotted into the mix. But the biggest challenge when it came to this new spin on Sherwood Forest wasn't either of those factors.

It anything, it was the fact that the film's lead actor, Taron Egerton, had just come from a pretty demanding round of such activity just before starting Robin Hood, thanks to his participation in another action-heavy franchise. Jamie Foxx knew this first hand, as he told CinemaBlend the following story:

He came from a tough, long shoot from the Kingsman [sequel], and he comes in to another tough long shoot. He had to take a moment, and we had to rally around him. I was like, 'Hey, you know what? Take your time. Whatever you've got to do, we're here for you.' Because we know. A lot of times, people take for granted our business, but he had a lot on his shoulders. To see him work through it, to see him push through, he had an injury, it really spoke to his character as a young guy.

It almost looked like Robin Hood would have to go with a different lead actor at one point, as both it and Kingsman: The Golden Circle had similarly booked shooting schedules. But, as it turned out, the respective studios behind those films worked out a deal that was beneficial to both. This allowed Taron Egerton to not only reprise his role as Eggsy in the Kingsman follow-up, but it also meant he could continue along the path to become the next Robin of Locksley.

Naturally, going from a demanding shoot like Kingsman: The Golden Circle into a production as hardcore as Robin Hood is going to be a bit of a stretch. In particular, with Egerton suffering some repetitive strain injuries on that first film, and getting thrown off of a horse on the second, everything was far from average making these two films back to back.

This is where having a supportive cast comes in handy. Because, if your lead performer isn't feeling up to the job, the entire picture can go south fast. Not only does this new Robin Hood have an ensemble flavor to it, but it can be seen in the interactions between Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx that they got along pretty well as co-stars. So that empathy's not only coming from a professional place, but also a personal one.

In the end, Robin Hood looked to be a demanding shoot for all, but worth the time and endurance spent on its final product. Ready to introduce the Kingsman generation to a new Robin of Locksley, the film is now out in theaters, firing those classic arrows into the world of cinema once more.

Starting with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's serialized storytelling, shared universes and crossover-heavy shows have become commonplace. Both the small and silver screen have plenty of these massively popular projects, which are often shrouded in mystery until release. Just ask Sarah Paulson, who stars in the ultra-secretive American Horror Story.

Sarah Paulson also has another super secretive project coming out with M. Night Shyamalan's Glass. Paulson plays newcomer Ellie Stapler, squaring off against the cast of both Unbreakable and Split in the crossover movie. I recently spoke with Paulson about playing Ellie, and her penchant for picking ultra secretive projects. It turns out, all the spoiler dodging is exhausting, as she put it:

It's always hard because with everything I do there's this level of secrecy around it. I'm not able to talk about it as freely as you would be. Like when I did the movie Carol or Ocean's 8. You can talk about the plot, you can talk about your experience making it in a really fun, free way. This is hard, because there are spoilers. American Horror Story I can never talk about the plot, even when I know exactly what the plan is, I still can't talk about it. Bird Box I couldn't.

That's how the cookie crumbles. If you want to work in super popular projects featuring ambitious crossovers and years of anticipation, you're going to have to keep it tight lipped. And for Sarah Paulson, this can be a bit trying while doing press.

Sarah Paulson's comments make a great deal of sense, given the high stakes of her most recent film projects. Every season of American Horror Story is heavily guarded, as Ryan Murphy crafts a new setting, set of characters, and moments of horror. Paulson has been in every scene of the fan favorite series, and is often at the center of crossovers, as she plays her myriad characters from the past eight seasons.

Then there's her role as Ellie Staple in Glass. M. Night Shyamalan's new release is almost two decades in the making, as it completes the narrative started back with 2000's Unbreakable. Shyamalan is a director synonymous with twist endings, which must be guarded in order for them to retain power. As such, Sarah Paulson is once again unable speak freely about her character, and the contents of Glass.

Luckily for the Emmy Award winning actress, Glass is in theaters now, with every twist, turn, and comic book showdown available for moviegoers. Following the wild success of Split, the pressure is on for M. Night Shyamalan to complete his trilogy, including his perspective on superheroes. As for American Horror Story, Sarah Paulson will just have to wait until the fall, when Season 9 premiers with a mysterious new theme.
