What Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2 Will Be About

Who knew the perfect recipe for a truly amazing Spider-Man film was adding more spider-heroes? Sony Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is not only being named the best Spider-Man film but also among the best films of the year. While it is just reaching its first weekend in theaters, the film has a near perfect Rotten Tomato score from critics and audiences alike... so why not get rolling on a sequel?

Following the early praise for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it was already announced a couple weeks ago that Sony Animation is planning a sequel and a female-centered spinoff. Per a Vanity Fair interview with Sony chief Amy Pascal, the sequel will focus on Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy and a budding romance between the two spider-heroes from different universes.

As teased in the film's previews, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse centers on 13-year-old Miles Morales as he becomes Spider-Man, with the mentorship of crime-fighting veteran Peter Parker at his disposal. The pair are soon visited by additional spider-people -- including a 16-year-old Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, and Peni Parker.

Since Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy are nearly the same age, and share an origin story that have them suiting up into spider-heroes, it's no surprise the two hit it off. However, in the new release the pair become friends -- a move producer Christina Steinberg may have helped pushed for in service of the character's agency when first introduced to audiences.

A romantic storyline between Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen is canon in the comics in a 2017 issue titled "Sittin' in a Tree," so the decision to implement it into the animated sequel isn't too much of a surprise to fans. Phil Lord's original script for Into the Spider-Verse reportedly included a bit of their romantic storyline, but that was ultimately cut in service of taking time to introduce all the characters and to avoid overstuffing the story.

The Into the Spider-Verse sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, best known for his work on The Legend of Korra and Voltron. David Callaham will be penning the script, amidst his already highly-anticipated screenplays for Wonder Woman 1984 and Zombieland 2, currently in production. The new Spider-Verse franchise is shared with the new Marvel live-action universe Sony has begun this year, notably with the huge success of Venom.

The comic book characters are each fairly new to Marvel -- as Miles Morales was introduced in 2011 and Spider-Gwen in 2014 -- but have been huge fan favorites among many comic book fans. We'll have to see just how moviegoers receive Into the Spider-Verse as it just swung into theaters last night. However, the flick has already cashed in $3.5 million, making it the tenth largest preview gross for an animated feature film to date.

Of Course The Game Night Cast Had Game Nights, Heres What They Got Up To

When taking on various roles, actors are often required to learn different skills and habits in order to best embody the characters that they play -- and this even extends to silly comedies. Take, for example, the cast of the new movie Game Night. Prior to the making of the film, most of the stars didn't really know each other, but they found a way to bond, and as you might have guessed, their chosen method was game nights. As I learned during the Los Angeles press day for the film,

Kylie Bunbury: We did. We actually had game nights. So one time we went to Billy's; we would do it in the trailers. We would play Clue. Billy has the greatest Clue board. It's like a 3D Clue.Lamorne Morris: It's massive, and it's like glass topped, and metal and gold and different levels.Kylie Bunbury: But yeah, we definitely did it.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with the stars of Game Night earlier this month, and one question that I asked everybody was in regard to the games that the cast actually played together during the making of the film. It turns out that there wasn't any kind of regular thing going with the full ensemble, but some of them did get together to play the murder mystery game Clue. Lamorne Morris and Kylie Bunbury, who play couple Kevin and Michelle in the film, were the ones who told me about the cast events, and they made it sound like they had a great time.

Unfortunately, not everybody was always available during these sessions, as I learned during my interviews. For example, the owner of the special Clue board, Billy Magnusson, was excited to talk about the get-togethers, but sadly his partner in the film, Sharon Hogan, was never around to play:

Billy Magnusson: Yeah, we did. We absolutely did. Clue. She didn't come - obviously. It's been killing her all day.Sharon Hogan: Don't say obviously! I didn't go, but now I feel like I wish I had, because I feel like I missed out.Billy Magnusson: I never remember a point where I was like, 'Oh, Sharon's not here.' Sharon was always there! There's points where I was like, 'I wish Sharon wasn't here.' [laughs] I never felt that way!Sharon Hogan: You never felt what way?Billy Magnusson: You were always hanging out!Sharon Hogan: Yeah, I just didn't play Clue.Billy Magnusson: Yeah, I guess you didn't.

The same kind of split was featured in the room when I sat down with stars Jesse Plemons and Kyle Chandler. Plemons, who plays the creepy neighbor Gary in Game Night, was a part of the Clue games, but Chandler, who plays Jason Bateman's outsider brother, Brooks, never made it. They told me,

Kyle Chandler: No. Not that I was invited to.Jesse Plemons: You weren't invite. Sometimes it takes quite a long time to finish a scene, so we would play... Billy Magnusson... The really funny blond guy. He would organize some games in his trailer. We played Clue one night and some other stuff.

From my interviews, I gleaned that Billy Magnusson, Larmorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, and Jesse Plemons were all in on the Clue games -- but who won the most? Magnusson told me that there were no consistent winners, but Bunbury and Morris disagreed:

Kylie Bunbury: I think Billy was the best.Lamorne Morris: Because he knew...Kylie Bunbury: It was his game. I mean, whatever.Lamorne Morris: Home court advantage. That's all that was.

Obviously those game nights happened behind closed doors, but audiences will soon be able to see all of the stars gather together for some murder mystery action on the big screen. Game Night, directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and also starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, is arriving in theaters this Friday, February 23rd.

Zachary Levi Asks Fans To Stop Pitting Shazam Against Captain Marvel

Over the next two months, both Captain Marvel and Shazam! will release in theaters, which -- as comic book fans know -- is a fun bit of cosmic irony. The hero Shazam was formerly known as Captain Marvel, and now the two are getting their first blockbuster movies in a short span of each other. It's pretty funny! What's not funny is seeing trolls attempt to review bomb Captain Marvel in an apparent defense of DC and Shazam! Well, Zachary Levi isn't having any of that and he has a message for those "fans."

Despite the fact that critics who have screened Captain Marvel had extremely positive things to say about the movie, some people have taken it upon themselves to damage the movie before they've even seen it. Trolls attempted to review bomb Captain Marvel on Rotten Tomatoes, trying to lower the movie's score. At least part of this behavior can be traced to the DC-Marvel feud some fans still harbor, but Zachary Levi is not one of those people.

In a live video message on social media (saved via Twitter), Zachary Levi asked people to stop attacking Captain Marvel and Brie Larson in defense of Shazam! Levi said that kind of behavior doesn't help anyone and that these people are just making up bad things about Captain Marvel. The actor also emphasized there is "no competition" between the two movies, outside of the fact that they are releasing around a similar time frame. No one is pitted against each other here except in the minds of these trolls.

Shazam! director David F. Sandberg had some fun a few months ago, throwing playful shade at Captain Marvel when posting a fan poll showing more excitement for his movie. But he too recently tweeted about the Captain Marvel trolls, writing, "I for one look forward to Captain Marvel making all the money in the world to shut some of these people up."

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who becomes the hero Captain Marvel after she finds herself imbued with cosmic powers from an alien species. Shazam! follows Billy Batson, a young boy who is granted the ability to turn into a super-powered adult alter ego (Zachary Levi) by a wizard.

The two are completely different characters but they share an odd history involving their names that might be contributing to these online attacks.

To make a long story short, Shazam used to be known as Captain Marvel for several decades before DC finally changed his name to avoid confusion. Marvel trademarked the name for themselves in the '60s, so when DC started publishing its own Captain Marvel comics in 1972, they couldn't legally market them by that name. So, the comics, toys and various other media were called Shazam -- even though the character was still Captain Marvel. Pretty much anyone growing up with this character thought his name was Shazam anyway, so DC finally gave in and changed the name to Shazam in 2011.

Absolutely none of that had anything to do with the Carol Danvers version of the superhero.

Good on Zachary Levi for stepping in and pointing out how silly this whole feud has become. Both movies look fun, and I'm sure there are a ton of fans looking forward to seeing the both of them.

Captain Marvel arrives in theaters on March 8, and Shazam! makes its debut on April 5.
