Why Dakota Johnson Needed Therapy After Filming Suspiria

Previews suggest that there are a ton of great movies set to come out between now and the end of the year, but none look as trippy, eerie, and disturbing as Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria. We won't know until November if it will actually live up to that promise, but certainly one person deeply affected by it is star Dakota Johnson - who recently explained why her experience playing Susie Bannion saw her seek the help of a mental professional after production:

I find sometimes when I work on a project and --- I don't have any shame in this --- I'm a very porous person and I absorb a lot of people's feelings. When you're working sometimes with dark subject matter, it can stay with you, and then to talk to somebody really nice about it afterwards is a really nice way to move on from the project. My therapist is a really nice woman.

Dakota Johnson first revealed that he specifically entered therapy following the making of Suspiria earlier this year, but it was only during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that she explained the full story. It seems that her character work and the tone and themes of the film wound up being a little too intense for her due to her emotional filters, and as a result she felt the need to talk out her feelings with a third party.

This is interesting to learn if not just for the perspective it offers on the craft. There are plenty of actors who have the ability to completely mentally compartmentalize the work, go home at night disconnecting from their role - but others, like Dakota Johnson, aren't able to do that as easily. As a result, it can clearly be affecting for the performer, opening them up to thoughts and realities they might not have otherwise explored. Clearly this happened to Johnson in the making of Suspiria, and I'll admit to it making me extra curious to see what kind of heat the film is packing.

A remake of the Dario Argento classic, Suspiria begins as a young American woman (Dakota Johnson) moves to Berlin to enroll in an exclusive dance academy. She begins to discover, however, that the benefits of the experience may not be enough to compensate for the number of strange and horrific occurrences that begin to happen with greater and greater frequency. The film, which has a stacked cast including Chloe Moretz, Tilda Swinton, and Jessica Harper, just premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it received a polarized response - so we'll just have to wait and see how mass audiences receive it.

Amazon Studios is releasing Suspiria domestically, and is set to give it a limited release on October 26 followed by a nationwide expansion on November 2nd. Whats Happening With Amy Adams Enchanted Sequel, Disenchanted?

Disney has been cashing in on the trend of nostalgia in the movie industry by creating live-action adaptations of its animated blockbusters. The House of Mouse will go the more traditional sequel route with Mary Poppins Returns, but many fans are still wondering what happened to the Enchanted sequel. Titled Disenchanted, the project has long been in development, and CinemaBlend just got an update from director Adam Shankman.

CinemaBlend recently spoke to Adam Shankman about his new Taraji P. Henson movie What Men What, where the conversation eventually turned to his announced role as director of Disenchanted. Shankman said the following:

Yeah, we're still working on it. We're plugging away. We are trying to get there to start... we are pounding forward. I can just say that, Amy (Adams) has read the most recent scripts. We're real happy with the most recent script. And we're just wrestling now with things like budget and getting music written and all of that. I'm hoping that it's imminent.

While not exactly breaking news, this update is certainly going to be exciting for Enchanted fans out there. Because with the script finally shaping up and star Amy Adams on board to reprise her role a Giselle, it looks like the wheels are finally moving forward, and making Disenchanted a reality.

Adam Shankman's comments to CinemaBlend's Sarah El-Mahmoud will likely be a relief for moviegoers who thought an Enchanted sequel was never going to happen. The original movie was released back in 2007, so it's already been well over a decade of waiting. And while those involved occasionally give vague updates, Shanksman's most recent statement makes the plans feel a bit more concrete.

Enchanted featured a great cast of actors, with Amy Adams leading the charge as cartoon princess turned fish out of water Giselle. James Marsdon matched her ridiculousness as Prince Edward, while Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey played the straight man as Robert. Frozen star Idina Menzel also played Robert's fiancee Nancy, who ended up going 2-D and falling in love with Edward by the film's end.

Disenchanted would be able to give fans an update about how Giselle is adjusting to life in the real world, and her role as a mother figure to Morgan. Furthermore, it could give Idina Menzel the opportunity to belt out some new Disney tunes, as Nancy's time in Andalasia likely made her a bit more musical. Acclaimed composer Alan Menken wrote the music for the first film, so hopefully Adam Shankman is working alongside the writer for the developing sequel.

Of course, it's likely going to be quite some time for Disenchanted to come to theaters, as it hasn't even been written, let alone filmed and edited. As such, the mystery surrounding Adam Shankman's upcoming Disney feature won't slow down anytime soon.

January is an odd time for movies, while we sometimes see massive action movies like Power Rangers or end up with strong box office contenders like American Sniper, it is usually a slower time where smaller movies can be given a chance to be seen. It's the perfect time for a small comedy/drama starring a couple of bankable stars in a remake of a popular French film. The Upside is an English version of the popular movie The Intouchables, however, it's largely being found lacking compared to the original. CinemaBlend's Mike Reyes gave the movie 2.5 stars out of five and says The Upside doesn't do enough to distinguish itself from its French predecessor...

Save for a few story notes here and there, The Upside almost feels like a lazily reskinned version of The Intouchables, which rearranges some of the basic furniture of the piece in hopes that it'll really tie the room together.

This sentiment is largely shared by several other ciritcs who have had a chance to see The Upside, and aren't quite sure what the upside of the film is supposed to be. The AV Club, found the film to be a predictable film that doesn't do anything to earn the conflict it creates or the resolutions it provides.

A repetitive series of artificially inflated character conflicts and tossed-off resolutions, interspersed with slapstick and jokes about prissy rich snobs, ultimately adding up to far less than the sum of its well-worn parts.

The Upside tells the story of quadriplegic Phillip Lacasse (Bryan Cranston), a rich man confined to a wheelchair following a parasailing accident. He decides to hire ex-con Dell Scott (Kevin Hart) to be his caretaker almost as a joke, but Dell decides to accept the position and do his best with it. As you might predict, the two begin to bond, but also clash, as their two worlds begin to come together.

It's a somewhat predictable follow through based on the set-up, and that's largely the problem that many critics have. The Associated Press review seems almost angry at The Upside, if only because the movie clearly could have been something better.

Few films in memory have squandered so much acting talent in such a cliche-ridden, exploitative and dishonest way. It deserves its frozen grave.

Of course, there's a reason why movies like this tend to follow formulas. They can be comforting, and sometimes that's all a movie wants to be. There are those that appreciate The Upside for what it is. The Hollywood Reporter thinks that the chemistry between Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston works well enough that you simply might not care about the rest of it.

There's something so disarming about Phillip and Dell's relationship that you're gradually sucked into it without asking too many questions.

The New York Times also gave The Upside a mostly positive review, feeling that the movie is ultimately pretty funny and in a good way, as it doesn't try to make too many jokes out of disability.

Jon Hartmere's script has genuinely funny moments and is blessedly short on crassness: even a scene involving catheters and colon hygiene is less cringey than you might expect.

It seems like The Upside is the sort of movie that folks looking for an uplifting story might enjoy, even if it may not be one you'll remember much after the fact.
