John Wick 3 Filming Was Hijacked By A Thousand Ballsy Cats

So far, 2019 has been the year of the movie cat -- between Captain Marvels Goose and Church in Pet Sematary. So while the John Wick franchise has always centered on dogs, including the upcoming third chapter, felines marked their territory.

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum director Chad Stahelski recalled a particular cat invasion during the filming of the sequel in Essaouira, Morocco. The sequence features Keanu Reeves Wick and new character Sofia (played by Halle Berry) and her pair of Belgian Malinois hound protectors fighting off a small army of assassins. Heres what happened, in Stahelskis words:

The Moroccans are not big on canines. Love a fucking cat, though. There had to be thousands. We went there in the winter when we scouted and they werent that prevalent. We were like, Theres a few cats here, well get a cat department, and were going to move all the cats out. We show up to shoot and there were literally a thousand cats, okay? And the cats have balls of steel. Theyre not afraid of anything.

The irony! The director told Entertainment Weekly that, as a result, the crew had to build massive cages to house the cat residents while they shot the scene. They also tasked themselves with feeding them, Chad Stahelski commenting that there were more felines to feed than cast and crew members put together.

Halle Berrys hounds, who she trained herself, were to be a major component of the scene in Morocco. But, as you can imagine, thousands of cats are distracting. Chad Stahelski continued with these words:

What do Belgian Malinois love to chase? Fucking cats! While Keanu Reeves is killing ten guys over there, Halle is killing ten guys over here, and [there is the] stunt guy the dogs got to focus on. You want that dog focused on what hes supposed to bite, and what hes not supposed to bite. Hit the mark, right? And theres ten cats walking around and youre going, Oh, Jesus. Oh, Jesus. Youre sitting behind the monitor going, Whats the dog looking at? Whats the dog looking at? Oh my god oh my god, hes going to bite Argh! It got a little crazy between cat-wrangling, and dog-wrangling, and people-wrangling. And youve got the studio back [in America] going, Why are you a little behind? Just get the dog to do [it]. And youre like, I dont speak dog. If I did Id be fucking rich! Anyway, that was kind of fun.

Sounds like a bit of a mess but it makes for a great story and hopefully some great content for the John Wick 3 bonus features. The crew did not expect to run into cats, of all problems on set -- especially during a scene featuring dogs, no less.

In addition to working closely with the hounds -- such as a sequence where one of the dogs jumps off her back, scales a wall and takes someone down from above -- Halle Berry also trained hard to do her own badass stunts during the movies fight scenes. The actress has the bruises to show for it because she actually broke three ribs during rehearsal. She doesnt know how it happened but considers it her "badge of honor."

Unexpected cat setbacks aside, John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum is shaping up to be a highly-anticipated release. It's already being highly praised by critics, with one reviewer deeming it an action masterpiece." The movie is expected to make $30 to $40 million during its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut for the franchise yet. John Wick hits theaters on May 17.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Pokemon Detective Pikachu Ticket

Whenever theres a 3D movie presented to the public, its a fair assumption that it wants to be the very best, like no one ever was. So when Pokemon Detective Pikachu announced it was going into the third dimension, you could very well imagine that one of its causes, besides entertaining the masses and bringing Pokemon to live action, would be that very prospect.

But as weve seen in the past, ambition can be hobbled by slip ups here and there. So we naturally find ourselves asking that big question life likes to hand us from time to time: to 3D or not to 3D? If you want to see what we thought of Pokemon Detective Pikachu, you can pika pika your way over to our official review and read the rundown.

For now though, its time to slip on those classic black glasses, pour another round of coffee (extra shot, black as night, thank you so much) and see if Detective Pikachus big adventure is worth the extra ticket money, or if youd be better off buying a coffee to help keep you buzzed through the film.

Taking one look at the trailers for Pokemon Detective Pikachu, you could see that the 3D could be strong with this one. Between the amazing abilities that Pokemon execute in battles and life-saving danger, and the world of Ryme City being so lushly drawn, there was no way that this was going to stay a standard 2D film for long. Putting the right post-conversion job on this film would make Pokemon Detective Pikachu a marvel to behold.

In the screening of Pokemon Detective Pikachu that I attended, there were definitely some flaws in the presentation. However, Im not so sure they were on the Planning & Effort side of the house, as the visuals held up rather well. The biggest issue I ran into was, surprise surprise, the brightness of the picture. Since thats a big variable that depends on the location youre visiting to see a movie like Pokemon Detective Pikachu, I cant lay that at the feet of the 3D crew; especially when the depth and projection of the films enhancements work so well.

While I would have expected more visual assets being thrown off of the screen and into the laps of the audience, Pokemon Detective Pikachu certainly doesnt let the Before The Window quotient go to waste. Theres some pretty impressive moments of objects being pointed at the screen, and even some good Pokemon attacks that do manage to come at the audience in brief moments. The large battle in the third act particularly uses this aspect of the visual palette well, because theres Pokemon flying into action, and towards the camera, for all to see.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu has an amazing amount of depth to be portrayed in its picture. From the streets of Ryme City, to the countryside and more natural areas of the films visuals, theres not only clear spatial reasoning between characters and their environments, theres an extra mile that lets the background go on for what feels like forever. Characters are also perfectly spaced from one another, so theres no confusion as to whos operating in which piece of the action.

And now we come to the greatest stumbling block for Pokemon Detective Pikachu. As promised, it was the brightness score that threatens to sink the high of seeing Pokemon on the silver screen, in true 3D glory. Now this ultimately comes down to how well your theater maintains its projectors, both in switching between 2D and 3D screenings, as well as maintaining a healthy bulb life. In the case of my screening of the film, the brightness was turned down way too low, which dulled the colors being presented on the screen more than they would be by just slipping on the glasses. Your mileage may vary on this factor, and its suggested you see this 3D presentation in a theater you know to be maintaining their gear.

If your eyes get tired, or your mind gets curious during a 3D film, youll want to slip those glasses off and see what the world looks like without the aid of polarized lenses. Which leads to you, the audience, seeing that classic 3D blur that folks have been talking about for ages. Usually, the blur means that the picture is being manipulated to a certain extent, in order to make everything more 3D like; and in the case of Pokemon Detective Pikachu, theres a real good quotient of blur. Except for some scattered 2D aspects, which tend to be included to help anchor things down or give the eye a break, theres a lot of blur to the picture. The backgrounds especially benefit from the blur, which more than likely explains the impressive depths of this films picture.

One major factor that knocks down the Audience Health score for Pokemon Detective Pikachu is the lack of brightness. When a film is this dim, you start to feel your eyes getting tired, and you might get crankier than a Psyduck without its spa music. But in addition to that piece of the 3D puzzle wearing on the eye, theres a couple transitions that feel like they wonk out the 3D picture a little extra. A scene involving a commute on a high speed train is an example of where the eye will be confused, as the panning involved in that shot blurs things a little. You wont get nauseous, but you might need to take your glasses off more than usual.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu is a beautiful movie to look at, with some impressive 3D elements that could be even more impressive if shown correctly. Its hard to totally judge the 3D component, with a screening that was so dark as the one I encountered, but Id be willing to say that its exciting enough to take a chance and see it in a theater you trust to be up to snuff. But if you end up seeing the film in 2D instead, just make sure the screen you see it on is nice and crisp, because this film deserves as clear a picture as possible.

No one would mistake the Lisbeth Salander movies for upbeat, crowd-pleasing rays of sunshine. This isn't Pixar, it's Stieg Larsson, and the world created by the bestselling author. Even the films adapted from this dark corner of the literary world have a coat of bleak, steely defiance to them, though they very much are dictated both by the actress in the lead role, and the director behind the camera.

As Sony prepares to unleash its latest chapter in the Lisbeth Salander saga, with Claire Foy (The Crown) assuming the lead, CinemaBlend traveled to Berlin to visit the set of The Girl in the Spider's Web, the first novel not penned by Larsson in the series. Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe, Evil Dead) has been hired to leave his stamp on the material, and it's his approach, we learned, that promises a dark adaptation to David Lagercrantz's 2015 novel. While visiting with us on set, Alvarez reflected:

I'm on my third movie. That's the time when, as a director, you look back a little bit at the themes you repeat over and over. I've been the writer on all of my movies. It becomes evident. You go, 'Well, you kind of have an issue with this or that, because you go back there all of the time.' I definitely have an issue with guilt. All of my stories are about guilt. And at the same time, I'm obsessed with this idea that, we all have this door. And with this door, there's the assumption that there's something horrible beyond that door. We'd rather not go through it. We know it's there. We look at it all of the time. There's something dreadful on the other side, and you never know when you are going to have to go there.So some movies, more optimistic movies, they say if you open that door, it's not going to be as bad as you think. My movies, on the other hand [laughs], they say what's on the other side is way worse than you had imagined. But it says that if you go through that, and you face that, then what's beyond that will always be for a better life. That's the constant theme of all of my movies, and you have seen that here, as well. It definitely has a tone that is, there's a little bit of a dread that something bad is coming. In the story, that's what Lisbeth is going through. But she's going to go through that door, right? She's going to face that dread.

This insight, gained on the set of The Girl in the Spider's Web, mirrors the "Angel of Vengeance" approach that Lisbeth Salander (Claire Foy) displayed in the debut trailer for Fede Alvarez's thriller. The new mission for Lisbeth will put her in the path of a missing relative (played by Sylvia Hoeks) and a young boy named August (Christopher Convery) who might be the key to a far-reaching conspiracy.

But it's the hiring of Fede Alvarez for this adaptation of The Girl in the Spider's Web that Sony hopes will give the movie its necessary edge. It's certainly present in this first trailer. Check it out, if you haven't yet:
