Fantastic Beasts Reveals Key Grindelwald And Dumbledore History In Deleted Scene

Moviegoers may have to wait longer than expected for Fantastic Beasts 3, but those who are hungry for Harry Potter content are in luck. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is available digitally and it's packed with 14 minutes of deleted scenes. One of these scenes includes an extended conversation between Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) in which the latter dishes on some important history between himself and Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).

Newt: So why did you send me to New York?Dumbledore: Because I knew Grindelwald would try to catch Credence. He had a vision, you see, many years ago, in which an Obscurial killed the man he fears above all others.Newt: You.Dumbledore: I thought you might deprive Grindelwald of his weapon, not by killing Credence but by saving him.

As Harry Potter fans are well aware, Dumbledore and Grindelwald have quite a bit of history. The two of them were close friends as young men who both shared the desire to become unbeatable wizards. Things eventually went sour between the two because Grindelwald is a lunatic and Dumbledore mostly isn't. Their falling out led to a three-way duel between the two men and Dumbledore's brother, which sadly ended in the death of Dumbledore's sister.

The full details of their relationship and what went wrong have never been fully disclosed, but it won't likely stay that way for long as Fantastic Beasts gets closer to its conclusion. Case in point, a deleted scene from The Crimes of Grindelwald finds Dumbledore opening up a bit about about his history with Grindelwald and providing some exposition.

Unfortunately, we can't show off a clip, but Hypable has a description of the scene in question. The deleted scene is from early in the film during Newt and Dumbledore's first conversation in London. Dumbledore is explaining why he sent Newt to New York City during the first movie and it was all about Credence (Ezra Miller). As it turns out, Dumbledore knew that Grindelwald would still be looking for Credence because the dark wizard had a vision that an Obscurial would kill the man he fears most.

Dumbledore had hoped that Newt would be able to save Credence, thus preventing Grindelwald's vision. In classic Dumbledore fashion, he didn't explain any of this to Newt beforehand, but better late than never, I guess.

The conflict between Dumbledore and Grindelwald will likely take center stage sooner rather than later. The two of them them have a war-ending duel coming up and the films are likely building to that moment. Hopefully by that point, the history between the two men will finally be revealed in full.

Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 20, 2020 (but that will probably be moved since production was pushed back on the "gigantic" film). Until then, stay up to date on all the movies heading to theaters this year with our 2019 movie guide.

William Shatner Regrets Directing Star Trek V

William Shatner will always be best known as a television legend, who was the first of many Star Trek captains when the original television series made a cultural impact on viewers, and the science fiction genre, in the late '60s. A lot of surprising new information about Shatner has still slipped through the cracks, despite the many interviews and countless books he has written in the past. His new memoir is no exception, as the actor reveals that he and Leonard Nimoy weren't close at the very end of his life, that he once did mushrooms in Amsterdam with his wife because he always loved Alice in Wonderland, and also admitted that directing Star Trek V: The Final Frontier wasn't a particularly good decision. Here's what he said:

I had a choice. I could accept the compromise or refuse to direct the movie. I made a mistake; I accepted the compromise, which doomed the picture from the beginning.

His words come from his new memoir, Live Long and... What I Might Have Learned Along the Way (via TrekMovie.com), which is hitting store shelves on September 4. Star Trek V was the first and only Star Trek film William Shatner directed for a reason, I guess. When his original story idea for the installment wasn't given the mark of approval by series creator Gene Roddenberry, they had to creatively compromise, which produced less than exceptional results. Star Trek V: Final Frontier opened in 1989 to the lowest numbers of the film series, with $52 million (when adjusted for inflation), according to Box Office Mojo. The much more successful film before it, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, received much higher acclaim and $109 million (with inflation) upon opening.

While William Shatner recently showed his support to fellow captain, Patrick Stewart, who will soon be reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation, the actor has distanced himself from the franchise in recent years and has shown a bit of weariness with the franchise. When asked about what Star Trek character he would play if not Kirk, Shatner answered he'd be willing to play a Red Shirt, because they die quick and the actors are on to the next job. Shatner was also critical of his friend Leonard Nimoy's appearance in the 2009 Star Trek reboot, and said the actor played a useless role, while he also recently admitted that he would not be interested in reprising his role of Captain Kirk.

It's difficult to understand the toll it can play on a person who has been known for an iconic character his entire life, especially with Trekkies being such devoted fans. William Shatner has been invested in and attached to the Star Trek franchise since it's over 50-year-old history began, so some regrets are sure to be among his many accomplishments and accolades. And, while it's unfortunate that directing Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is among those regrets for Shatner, at least he seemed to have learned from his mistake.

Warning! The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Annihilation, as well as touching on Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach Trilogy. If you haven't yet explored the mysteries of The Shimmer, come back once you've seen it.

Annihilation just arrived in theaters and we are still processing the weirdness, horror and beauty of Alex Garland's mind-bending film. It's not often that you get science fiction that challenges the viewer like this, and we're naturally curious to see more of The Shimmer on screen. But how exactly this world could continue is up in the air. For those unaware, Annihilation is based on a novel of the same name by author Jeff VanderMeer and it is the first part of his Southern Reach Trilogy. The entire trilogy was acquired by Paramount, but director Alex Garland has previously stated that he would not be helming any potential sequel. But that doesn't mean that the story can't continue.

Like Inception, Blade Runner and many of the genre's most memorable classics, Annihilation provides no easy answers, leaving the viewer with an unnerving and ambiguous ending. Of all the many differences between Jeff VanderMeer's novel and Alex Garland's film, the ending is one of the big ones. In the novel, Lena sets off from The Lighthouse towards an island off the coast, in search of her husband, but Area X and the veil of eco-horror enveloping it remains. In the film, Lena (Natalie Portman) faces her duplicate and defeats it, destroying The Lighthouse and the source of The Shimmer in the process. Lena returns to the Southern Reach and something that is not her husband but some part of The Shimmer remains inside of her. This ending leaves a far less obvious path forward than the novel but it still opens up some compelling possibilities.

So let's take a look at the ways an Annihilation sequel could continue to diverge from the books and forge a new path.

Break from the Books

There are several reasons why the books do not provide a good template for any continuation of the Annihilation franchise. Upfront, it is worth noting that the second and third books aren't nearly as beloved as the spectacular first one, and they diverge drastically from the atmospheric, waking nightmare of Annihilation. The second novel, Authority, focuses on the political maneuvering of those at the Southern Reach organization. The third novel, Acceptance, returns to Area X during the winter but focuses more on revealing the past of the area. These approaches would not work for a sequel film because of how Alex Garland's film has already diverged from the source material. The Southern Reach organization was not portrayed to be nearly as clandestine or manipulative in the film, and watching office politics as a follow-up to a surreal eco-horror film doesn't feel like the right way to go. There is also the fact that The Shimmer's hold over the area was seemingly lifted at the end of the film, rendering future expeditions or investigations of this area rather moot.

Despite the divergence from Jeff VanderMeer's novel, the film actually opens up new and interesting possibilities for a sequel that can take the Annihilation franchise in some unexpected directions.

The Shimmer Becomes A Pandemic

Although The Shimmer was expanding, it was still relatively contained, with the Southern Reach government organization keeping Area X and its horrors secret from the public. But now, with The Shimmer and the threat it poses seemingly extinguished, the government may see no more cause for concern. Yet, as the end of the film alluded to, although The Lighthouse is ash and the veil of The Shimmer is lifted, its influence persists. Lena (Natalie Portman) may have defeated her duplicate, but she is changed, having become both more and less than she was when she went into The Shimmer.

Now, her and Faux-Kane can set out into the world, like plague ships being welcomed into an unsuspecting harbor, carrying The Shimmer with them. This approach could allow for an Annihilation sequel to act as a pandemic story. Perhaps Lena returns to Johns Hopkins and spreads this nightmare. Those Lena comes into contact with could begin to have their DNA refracted, duplicated and infused with the DNA of things around them. This approach could create a really compelling pandemic and body horror story that evolves Annihilation into something different, something new.

Do an 'Invasion Of The Body Snatchers' story

Following Lena and Faux-Kane opens up a bunch of possibilities. But instead of taking the pandemic approach, an Annihilation sequel could explore how these two characters are not entirely human, if at all. While that could be used to examine what it means to be human, there are plenty of A.I. stories out there and that ground is well trodden. Instead this could be a body snatchers or Skrulls type situation where no one can trust their neighbors or those around them, fearing they might be not quite human.

In the novels, Kane isn't the first person sent into The Shimmer to return. If the Southern Reach was disingenuous with Lena or if they were simply unaware, The Shimmer could have sent more duplicates out into the world, either by nature or design. This would create a really fun and paranoid film, with Natalie Portman's Lena straddling the balance between what she was and what she is, perhaps growing to appreciate The Shimmer inside her.

The Lighthouse Was Just The Beginning

Part of what was so compelling about Annihilation is that you didn't necessarily get the sense that The Shimmer was a malevolent entity or force. It was simply acting in accordance with its nature. Unlike the novel, the film confirmed that this phenomenon was extra-terrestrial in origin. There is a concept in Astrobiology called Panspermia that hypothesizes that life on Earth may have originated elsewhere in the universe, brought to our planet via meteors carrying microbes and biological material. According to Slashfilm, an earlier version of the script ended with meteors like the one that hit The Lighthouse raining from the sky, presumably carrying with them more of The Shimmer and other horrors not of this world. This scrapped ending could still kick off a sequel film. With new Shimmers cropping up all over the world. There could be new expeditions to destroy the landing sites of each of these anomalies. Visually this would also provide a cool opportunity to see The Shimmer's surreal effects in different environments.

A variation of the Panspermia hypothesis is Directed Panspermia, in which the seeds of life were sent here by an advanced extraterrestrial civilization. So instead of assuming that Earth is just in the unfortunate path of a particularly germ-ridden set of space rocks, this could actually be a deliberate attempt by aliens to invade the Earth, by using biological weapons to return the planet to its Edenic state. This would require the scale of a sequel to be much bigger than the original but science fiction films have a proud history of taking small horror films like Alien and Terminator and vastly expanding the scope and mythology in the sequel.

The possibility of a sequel is likely dependent on many things, and sadly, Annihilation hasn't exactly set the box office on fire. But with an international distribution deal through Netflix, anything is possible. So what do you think? Would you like to see more of Annihilation? The first Fantastic Beasts movie went out of its way to stand apart from the pre-existing Harry Potter films. Not that it could ever separate itself completely from that world. Both are born from the mind of J.K. Rowling, and both occupy corners of the author's vast Wizarding World. But Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them avoided direct references to anything familiar from the Harry Potter world, resting on the shoulders of new characters such as Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller), the No-Maj Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) and the menacing Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).

However, the strands that connect Fantastic Beasts to the on-screen Harry Potter film series will be pulled tighter this November with the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, as the story will cast a younger version of Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and will take audiences back to Hogwarts. But how? When CinemaBlend flew to London to visit the set of Crimes of Grindelwald, we learned that Hogwarts would be used in crucial flashbacks that would establish Dumbledore's relationship with Newt, and fill in vital historical gaps in the magizoologist's colored past. Longtime Potter producer David Heyman opened up about how excited he knows fans will be to return to the famous school, saying:

Not [just] going back to Hogwarts. Going back to the world of... it's seeing Dumbledore. How great is that? Seeing a younger Dumbledore, and seeing he and Newt's first meeting, I think, will be a thing that the fans will really love. Because here is this character who's so -- you know, we have such a connection to, who is such a central part of the Harry Potter stories. And to see him earlier on, as it were, very much, related to the Dumbledore of... I'd say, 'of old,' but of future. But at the same time, you realize in the Potter films that he was working things to his own end. He knew the path. He knew what was happening. He understood the back stories, and he was working Harry. I mean, in some ways, you could say, responsibly putting Harry into great danger, at times. But he had faith in Harry and his ability. While here, you see Dumbledore, and there are remnants of that and you see echoes of that. But he's also wonderful and colorful and magical and wise, and the character that we know, but younger, and we see slightly different shades.

The Crimes of Grindelwald director David Yates opened up to CinemaBlend and said that once they knew young Dumbledore would be integral to this chapter of the saga, a return to Hogwarts was inevitable, as well as exciting. Yates reveals:

It was something that evolved in the developing process. Because we were introducing Dumbledore, it felt right to bring that world back into this one. We're there very briefly. You know, right in the middle of the movie, we go back for about 10 minutes to Hogwarts, and see it in 1927. It was a very organic natural part of the development process that took us back there.

But Fantastic Beasts Art Director Martin Foley let it be known that we would visit parts of the school's grounds that audiences have not seen before... including one location that was, personally, his favorite to build on this new set. Foley told us:

It's a part of Hogwarts that we've never seen before. It's like a secret cubbyhole space where Newt keeps some things. And it's just so... it's a tiny set, but it's really cute.

Producer David Heyman clearly was excited to use Hogwarts in flashback scenes to flesh out the past relationships between these characters, because fans know that Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) was expelled from the legendary school... and that Dumbledore went to bat for him at the time. While we will see plenty of action of Newt and Dumbledore in the current timeline of the Fantastic Beasts story, the Hogwarts moments will be used to expand on the history of the characters. And not just these two men... but also of Newt and Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz). On that relationship, Heyman was guarded, but he did offer up the following:

Leta's someone who Newt had a very close relationship with. And I think that at Hogwarts... they were at Hogwarts together, and one of the things I think we will enjoy is, Newt was always -- you know, just like his love of beasts, he always saw the good in people. And Leta is someone who, I think, wrestles with that a little bit, just in her... she's from a family. She's from a pureblood family. And that whole thing of, 'what you're born and who you are' is an element of her character.

So, not only is Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald a return to the adventure surrounding Newt, Tina, Jacob and Queenie, it also will be the first return to Hogwarts since The Boy Who Lived defeated Lord Voldemort on screen several years ago.
