Why Peter Jackson Is Very Excited About Making Mortal Engines Sequels

Why Peter Jackson Is Very Excited About Making Mortal Engines Sequels

Peter Jackson is a man who knows a thing or two about building franchises. After all, he is the man behind one of the most successful, ambitious examples ever to come out of Hollywood. That in mind, most recently he's been putting his brain power into Mortal Engines, the upcoming adaptation based on the novel by author Philip Reeve, and he definitely has sequels in his thoughts. Why? Because he believes that the source material only improves as it progresses:

You should [read all the books] because they actually get better and better. This is one movie where I hope it's successful enough that we get to do the other stories, because the other books are really... this story mushrooms in such unexpected ways in the future books. So, I really hope we get to make those films. It's cool. It's a love story. It's an unlikely love story. It's about a young woman who doesn't really think that she will ever find love, and she finds it in a very unexpected way in the middle of this chaotic, strange world that we're in. And I also just like the idea of seeing big cities eat other.

That quote comes from an interview I did last summer on the set of Mortal Engines down in Wellington, New Zealand -- which I had been invited to along with a small group of other journalists. While talking with Peter Jackson, who is serving as both co-writer and producer on the movie, the filmmaker was asked about what has kept him interested in the project, having started to develop it back in 2009. His explanation was that he just really loves the source material, and feels that it can develop into something great over the course of multiple chapters.

The first Mortal Engines book was published in 2001, but its quickly-earned popularity allowed it to spawn a sequel two years later: Predator's Gold. Ultimately Philip Reeve wrote four books in the series, with the first two novels followed by 2005's Infernal Devices and 2006's A Darkling Plain. Hollywood has certainly seen a number of these kinds of franchises be successful in recent years, and if the quality and audience reaction proves strong enough, it's easy to imagine big screen follow-ups.

To that end, Peter Jackson also told us that the Mortal Engines movie will feature particular references and keep a few doors open -- allowing a sequel to pick up certain threads. That being said, he also stressed that these elements would remain small and wouldn't detract from the larger self-contained nature of the story being told, just in case sequels don't wind up happening. Said Jackson,

I think that is where we have an advantage where Philip Reeve didn't, because when he wrote the first book I don't think he knew he was going to write the other books. I think he wrote that one book as a story, and then through the fact that people liked it and obviously he thought he had more story to tell, he carried on. We have benefited, obviously, knowing now what's in the other books in the future. So there are little subtle things we're doing that will help us flow into the other. They're not anything that changes anything much, but it's just stuff that because we know what is going to happen in the future with these books in the story we're able to plant little things here and there that will be helpful to us should we be so lucky to make more films.

Directed by Christopher Rivers, Mortal Engines is a sci-fi adventure movie set in a future decimated by nuclear war. What remains of the world are various cities that operate as giant mobile machines, the bigger ones devouring the smaller ones to take their resources and grow even larger. Robert Sheehan, Hera Hilmar star, with Hugo Weaving, Stephen Lang, and Colin Salmon in supporting roles. The film will be in theaters on December 14th -- and stay tuned here on CinemaBlend for more about our time on set!

Bill Skarsgard Promises A More Vicious Pennywise In IT Chapter Two

Bill Skarsgard Promises A More Vicious Pennywise In IT Chapter Two

Clowns are scary. This is an empirical fact and anybody that disagrees is wrong. This is why Stephen King's novel It was so utterly terrifying and why the movie of the same name became one of the highest grossing horror movies ever made. However, if you thought that the forthcoming sequel would just be another installment of "scary clown theater" you'd be wrong.

Bill Skarsgard, who plays Pennywise the clown, says that his character in It Chapter Two is going to be even more terrifying the second time around.

Hes inflicted fear on his prey, and hes very focused on fear, but hes never experienced it himself. Now hes experienced something that he has been inflicting on others and theres a shift leading into the second movie. It fuels hatred and anger towards the kids, who will be adults in this one, so I think there might be an even more vicious Pennywise. Hes really going after it

At the end of It, the band of kids that had been terrorized by Pennywise are able to turn the tables on him and get the upper hand. They drive the monster away, but they don't actually destroy him. This is something that they don't actually realize until many years later when the same terrible things that were happening in their hometown when they were children begin to happen again.

Only this time, based on what Bill Skarsgard tells EW, it seems Pennywise is pissed. He doesn't just want to make the kids fear him, he has it out for them for what they did to him before. It's not shocking to think an embodiment of evil is capable of holding a grudge.

And of course, Pennywise has to become a bigger threat in It Chapter Two because it has to make sense that the creature that the group defeated as children is somehow still a threat to them as adults. You'd think if they could do it once, they could do it again.

In the original Stephen King novel, the story jumps back and forth between time periods, so you don't really know what happened to Pennywise the first time around when you're reading the book. The movie audience will be sitting down knowing the character was beaten once, which will likely require the sequel to take a slightly different tact in order to raise the tension.

IT was a massive success when it came out. That success led to the sequel being given the green light in the first place. With most of the team that made the first film returning, both in front and behind the camera, as well as the addition of new actors like Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy, it seems It Chapter Two is looking to be another big success.

If you're a fan. keep your eyes on CinemaBlend later today, as the first trailer for IT Chapter Two is scheduled to drop in just a couple hours.

The Time Kelsey Grammer Auditioned To Play Han Solo

The Time Kelsey Grammer Auditioned To Play Han Solo

Quick, think about Han Solo and the ideas that the character conjures in your head. Devil-may-care sensibility? Roguish charm? Those are the qualities that Harrison Ford brought to the role when he stepped into the character's boots in Star Wars: A New Hope, but we almost got a version of Han with an affinity for tossed salad and scrambled eggs. That's because it turns out that Kelsey Grammer actually tried out for the role over four decades ago. In a recent appearance on Conan, the actor opened up about being put in touch with a young George Lucas and said:

I walked up there, and I sat down and there's Lucas sitting there. He explains to me that they're doing this movie about a fairy tale in space. He said, 'There's two guys in it who go and rescue a princess. That's pretty much it,' and he said, 'I think maybe you're a little old for the younger guy and maybe a little too young for the older guy, but you might make a pretty good, sort of like a John Wayne character.' I thought, 'Oh I can do that,' and he said, 'Well I'll think about it,' and then that's the last I heard of it. Cut to two years later, I'm sitting in San Diego, I was working at the Shakespeare festival there, and I sat down for this movie and the big cruiser goes across the sky and it's Star Wars. I suddenly realized, 'Oh my god. This is that movie. That's that weird guy. That guy Lucas.'

Talk about how things could've shaken out differently. In the early days of Star Wars' development, Kelsey Grammer met with George Lucas and was briefly considered for Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. Not quite fitting into what Lucas wanted for either character, age-wise, Grammer tried out for Han and ultimately didn't hear back. In the end, he wound up seeing Star Wars and immediately knew what he was looking at when the movie began.

Check out everything that Kelsey Grammer had to say about the situation during his recent appearance on Conan, below!

Of course, it's clear that the Kelsey Grammer version of Han Solo would've been wildly different from Harrison Ford's for a variety of reasons. For starters, Grammer tends to bring a more refined persona to many of his most beloved characters, which makes it easy to believe that his Han might not have been as much of a cowboy. Moreover, as Grammer explained, he was only 20 years old at the time, so his Han would've been much younger than Ford's, as Ford was 34 years old when the Star Wars franchise began.

Despite how iconic Harrison Ford's portrayal of Han Solo has become, it is worth remembering that Kelsey Grammer is not the only now-famous actor who went out for the role. In addition to the future Frasier star, actors like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's Kurt Russell and Seven Psychopaths' Christopher Walken similarly went out for it. In the end, however, there was only one true Han Solo, and that was Harrison Ford.

Now, Alden Ehrenreich has taken on the mantle, and you can catch the new Han Solo actor in Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is currently in theaters.

The Crazy Estimated Number Of Body Scars That Michael B. Jordan Wears In Black Panther

The Crazy Estimated Number Of Body Scars That Michael B. Jordan Wears In Black Panther

Playing Erik Killmonger in Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan gets to wear a number of cool and interesting costumes, but none of them stand out as much as his look without a shirt. This is because Killmonger makes a habit of scarring himself every time he kills a person, and has used his entire body as a canvas of sorts. But exactly how many cuts does he sport? Michael B. Jordan recently told me,

Ah man, it was something like... I wanna say it was something like maybe 2,200 or something. It was a few of them. We had a couple bets to figure out exactly how many was in there. But I can't remember exactly, the number.

I had a fantastic time sitting down with Michael B. Jordan a few weeks ago, discussing his views on Wakandan border policy and actors he'd like to see join the Black Panther family, and one topic I broached was the number of scars the character sports. As you can see, Jordan couldn't tell me an exact figure (it wasn't clear if nobody ever counted or if he just forgot the number), but he estimated that it's somewhere north of a couple thousand.

As we learned from a character description released a few weeks ago, Erik Killmonger is introduced as an American black-ops soldier and trained killer who has traveled all around the globe on mercenary work. His real name is Erik Stevens, but he earned the nickname "Killmonger" because few could match his career body count. Or as Michael B. Jordan bluntly put it during our Black Panther junket interview,

He's been killing for a long time. You get more information in the movie, but yeah, he's been killing for a while.

While saying much more about the character would be providing spoilers, it's worth recognizing that Erik Killmonger is not only an incredibly dangerous physical threat for Black Panther, but also a serious challenge in the philosophy department as well. It makes for a tremendous protagonist/antagonist conflict in the Ryan Coogler-directed film, and it's easily one of the best of the established Marvel Cinematic Universe.

You can watch Michael B. Jordan discuss his scars and the extreme number of kills racked up by Erik Killmonger in Black Panther by clicking play on the video below.

Michael B. Jordan -- who previously worked with Ryan Coogler on both Fruitvale Station and Creed -- is just one member of an amazing ensemble of actors that populate Black Panther, including Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, Winston Duke, and Daniel Kaluuya. The movie will be in theaters this Friday, February 16th, and be sure to stay tuned for more from my interviews with the cast and filmmakers here on CinemaBlend!

When Michael B. Jordan took the mic, he dropped a fascinating piece of film trivia: Killmonger's scars in "Black Panther" were inspired by Washington. Jordan's brutal Marvel villain is instantly recognizable for the geometric array of scars that cover his torso, each signifying a past kill.

Michael B. Jordan's depiction of Killmonger got people thirsty for a number of reasons, but the moment he removes his jacket to show off the many, many scars for every life he took, it got a little more difficult to focus on his impending fight with the hero.

What's just as interesting is that I've always thought Chadwick Boseman was a young rising actor about the same age as Michael B. Jordan, but he's actually my age (40) . He's so youthful looking that he was able to pass for a college student about four years ago in "Draft Day".
