Dark Phoenix Could Lose Up To $100 Million

The newest, and penultimate movie in the X-Men franchise under Fox, debuted in theaters this past weekend, and...things did not go well. Dark Phoenix found itself opening to the lowest box office numbers in the history of the nearly 20 year old franchise. Based on that lackluster opening, and the odds that things are unlikely to get any better, analysts are predicting that the movie could end up losing as much as $120 million.

In addition to the low box office take, Dark Phoenix also isn't setting the world on fire when it comes to the critical response. The Rotten Tomatoes score is an abysmal 24% and the CinemaScore is a B-, a low for the franchise.

As one can imagine, there are a lot of theories as to why Dark Phoenix may have performed so badly. There are a variety of factors that appear to have contributed to the downfall in some way. The fact that the previous X-Men film, Apocalypse, had been the lowest grossing film in the franchise up until now certainly didn't help. It's likely that the film turned a lot of people off and nothing in Dark Phoenix was enough to bring them back.

On top of that, for those in the know that follow Hollywood and knew that this was to be the final movie in the Fox X-Men franchise, there may have been a feeling that the movie simply didn't matter because everything was going to be rebooted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe anyway.

The film certainly had some behind the scenes issues. Deadline reports that the movie was originally supposed to be two films, that was then cut down to one, forcing writer/director Simon Kinberg to rewrite the story.

Then the film had to go back for reshoots, and while that's common practice for films of this size, there was certainly a feeling from some that these reshoots were bad news, and there was little response from Fox to try and downplay that perspective. The fact that Dark Phoenix had its release date pushed back just a couple days after releasing a trailer with the original release date was not a good look.

There was clearly a perception going in that this was a troubled project, and while it doesn't actually appear the movie had any more difficulty than your average blockbuster, at a certain point perception becomes reality and the feeling that Dark Phoenix wasn't going to be a must see film resulted in that happening.

For a franchise that had some incredible massive entries, watching it fade away like this is more than a little sad.

Of course, technically there's the possibility that the X-Men franchise could still end on a high note. There is one more Fox-produced film waiting in the wings. Of course, The New Mutants is suffering from a lot of the same negative buzz as Dark Phoenix, so it will have the deck stacked against it.

The Final Aquaman Trailer Shows A Very Young Arthur Curry

We're rapidly approaching the next venture in DC's movie universe, Aquaman. We've already seen a lot of footage from the film, including a shot of Arthur Curry jumping out of a plane and more. As it turns out, he was a bit of a daredevil as a youngster as well. In the final trailer for James Wan's upcoming movie, we see Jason Momoa's character as an adorable little boy and then a young man who jumps off cliffs and more. Take a look.

We've known for a while that Aquaman would feature some big names, including Nicole Kidman playing Queen Atlanna and Willem Dafoe playing Vulko. Other big names like Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, who we first saw in Justice League, will be in the flick, as well. But stealing the spotlight in the latest look at the movie are the young men who will be playing Arthur Curry earlier on in his lifetime. Move over, Jason Momoa. Young actors like Kaan Gulder and Otis Dhanji are totally stealing the spotlight here, at least in terms of adorableness.

Previously, a nearly 6-minute look at the new Aquaman movie gave us a glimpse of Arthur Curry's origins, including a shot of his pregnant mother and the character as a baby boy, but this new trailer really explores what it meant to be Arthur Curry growing up, a young man stretched between both worlds. The bulk of the previous footage used James Wan's impressive underwater footage to get us excited about the flick; this time around, the marketers are ramping up the cute factor, instead.

This time around, I'm also getting vibes that sort of harken back to Wonder Woman's origin story. In that movie, Patty Jenkins really gave us enough of Diana's growing up experience to help the fish out of water story really land with audiences later. If it worked for Wonder Woman, hopefully it will work for Aquaman, as well.

In one really cool shot in the trailer, Arthur Curry is training "to be the best," catching his trident bare-handed and then cutting to a shot of the adult Arthur Curry pulling the same trick. It's an effective bit of marketing and sets up for the final trailer explaining exactly how one particular trident could help Arthur Curry unite the surface with the underwater communities... or how in the wrong hands that same trident could lead to utter destruction.

On one final note, Nicole Kidman also gets a really clear action sequence teased in this trailer. I'm particularly pumped to see her really go full action heroine on the big screen. Mostly these trailers have sold me on catching the DC flick, even though we've seen a bunch of footage so far. Luckily, this seems to be the last of the bunch, and if you'd like to see how all of these little parts make one big whole, you can catch Aquaman in theaters beginning on December 21.

Will Dragons Or Madea Win The Box Office This Weekend?

Welcome to March! Superhero season is starting this month, but first we have to say goodbye to two franchises. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World opened last week as the final film in that trilogy, and this weekend Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral ends the Madea series. Who will top the March 1-3 box office?

Well, it's almost certainly going to be How to Train Your Dragon 3. Or at least, it looked certain to box office analysts by Friday morning. But Madea's final film is ready to surprise us and could make it close, or even take over the lead by the end of the weekend.

The Hidden World broke records for the How to Train Your Dragon franchise last weekend. It did even better than expected. To Box Office Mojo, it's just a question how how much -- or how little -- the film will dip in its second weekend. The first How to Train Your Dragon film dropped 33.7% in its second weekend, and the second dropped 50%. Mojo is predicting a drop in the middle around 42%, giving the film a second weekend domestic gross around $32 million. (Deadline initially estimated it could make around $35 million or more, then tempered that expectation later on Friday. Variety went with anywhere from $27M to $36M.)

It's possible How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World could pass $100 million at the domestic box office this weekend, after 10 days in release. It has already made more than $217 million at the foreign box office, for a current total of $283.1 million.

In terms of A Madea Family Funeral, box office prognosticators initially predicted an opening from $18M-$20M, but it will probably be a lot higher. Funeral already earned a series record $1.1 million in Thursday night previews, so its weekend could skew high rather than low. Most of the Madea films have opened over $20 million, and since this is the final film, that may draw extra opening weekend attention -- possibly above $25 million. Unlike the Dragon films, Madea makes most if not all of its money at the domestic box office. The highest grossing film so far is Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail, which made $90.5 million in 2009.

At this point, it's still looking like Dragons will probably top the first weekend of March's box office, followed by Madea, but we'll see. After them, we should see two returnees -- Alita: Battle Angel and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part -- with the new release Greta probably making the top five with an opening around $5 million.

All of these films are going to need this weekend to make as much money as they can, because on March 8, the MCU's Captain Marvel arrives to officially open superhero season. Wonder Park opens March 15, and Dumbo on March 29, before Shazam! continues superhero dominance April 5, and Avengers: Endgame takes all the money on April 26. After that, it's blockbuster after blockbuster pretty much for the rest of the year, with some mini breaks here and there after the heart of summer.
