The Sly Way Ant-Man And The Wasp References The Big Lebowski

As we've written about, director Peyton Reed took more than a few references with him into the making of Ant-Man And The Wasp. For example, the idea of starting the story years after the first was inspired by the opening of Empire Strikes Back, and the whole narrative is reminiscent of titles like After Hours and Midnight Run. It's very easy to see these influences if you know to look for them, and this goes for The Big Lebowski as well - which Reed recently confirmed to me had a key impact on Paul Rudd's costuming in the movie:

When we talk about the Elmore Leonard and the sort of Noir and crime influences, there is a hint of Big Lebowski in there. There's a reason why Paul Rudd is in a bathrobe for the beginning when he first comes in and sees Pym's laboratory. It's the idea that you can't really have a passive hero in the way Lebowski is in that movie in a Marvel movie, but we wanted to flirt with it with Scott.

We regularly get to see Marvel Cinematic Universe movies about heroes who are ready to jump into action at any given moment, but Ant-Man And The Wasp is a very different kind of Marvel blockbuster. Paul Rudd's Scott Lang, who has spent a little bit too much time in prison, is just trying to live a responsible life, but that turns out to be a luxury he can't afford. Much like Jeff Bridges' The Dude in The Big Lebowski, he's unwittingly part of a much bigger plot going on in the world around him, and that connection was driven home by the wardrobe department on the film by having one of Rudd's key pieces of costuming be a bathrobe.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Peyton Reed last week for a big deep dive into the making of Ant-Man And The Wasp, and it was during this conversation that the subject of The Big Lebowski was raised. It led to a serious discussion about Scott Lang's big motivations in the story, doing everything he can to try and keep his nose clean, and it was actually very important in determining who Scott is at the start of the film. Said Reed,

Scott has reached a point where, after the events of Ant-Man and [Captain America:] Civil War, and maybe particularly Civil War, where, again, he was threatened with being in prison and away from his daughter, maybe it's just there's no place in his life to be Ant-Man. He's hanging around his apartment, and then just by sheer necessity gets plucked out because Hank and Hope need this psychic breadcrumb that he has in his head.

Going into more detail than that about the plot of Ant-Man And The Wasp starts to get into spoiler territory... but if you've seen the movie, you're in luck! Our full interview with Peyton Reed is now available on this week's episode of the Hero Blend podcast, so give it a listen!

As for Ant-Man And The Wasp, the movie will be arriving in theaters nationwide on Thursday night, and is expected to hit big this weekend. Check it out, let us know your thoughts, and stay tuned here on the site for a lot more from my interviews with the movie's cast and filmmakers.

The rule wouldn't have excluded Netflix, it just would have required an exclusive period for the films to run in theaters before they could be released to streaming or home video. Netflix still has to show its movies for at least 7-days in 1 theater in LA county to be eligible--that has not changed.

Avengers 4 Fan Theory: Did The Infinity War Trailer Have Scenes For Endgame?

Avengers 4 Fan Theory: Did The Infinity War Trailer Have Scenes For Endgame?

Time travel is heavily rumored to play a big part in Avengers: Endgame and a new fan theory is taking that idea one step further. Getting the marketing involved in all this, the fan theorizes that the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War actually contains scenes that will be in Endgame, rationalizing that the little variations are actually a result of time travel. Here's the theory:

Even after one trailer, one Super Bowl TV spot, and only 82 days left until the movie premieres, there is still shockingly little information about Avengers: Endgame. Promotional materials are slowly making their way online, but before the marketing push really takes effect, Marvel fans are coming up with their own theories to keep themselves busy.

The latest one offers an interesting perspective. With the Avengers speculated to turn to time travel as a means to reverse the damage done to the universe by Thanos, one fan proposes that we've already seen the results of this time tampering.

As the theorist speculates on Reddit, the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War has references to scenes that don't show up in the actual movie. For example, Thanos only has the Power and Space Stones on Titan in the trailer when at that point in the film he had four Infinity Stones. There's also the infamous shot of the Avengers and the army of Wakanda running through a forest towards the camera, and that never made its way into the movie.

The fan believes that all of these scenes may be in Endgame as examples of how the Avengers are changing history by time traveling. Maybe Thanos will only end of with two stones during the fight on Titan because the Avengers stop him from gaining the other two.

I'm all for a fan theory, and this one has an interesting perspective, but I think it's over-thinking things a bit much. For starters, lots of blockbuster trailers have scenes that don't make it into the movie. Rogue One is an infamous example of this. Sometimes, studios will film shots for the sole purpose of putting them in the trailer -- something Marvel has done on occasion. Marvel, in particular, will alter shots with CGI so as not to give away spoilers.

Also, this theory somewhat implies that we'll be seeing some scenes from Infinity War all over again, which seems unlikely. If you have access to time travel, it's more entertaining to visit other past Marvel films than the one everyone saw only a year ago. Additionally, the idea that the Avengers are trying to change history by making really tiny changes like waiting slightly longer to join a fight is boring.

We're all chomping our fingernails in anticipation of Avengers: Endgame and we don't have that much longer to wait. Endgame is all set to arrive in theaters on April 26. To learn more about the film, here's what we know so far.

In the trailer, it's a very dark scene, where you only see Cap's silhouette, but in the movie he's much more fully lit. Check Out Aquamans Ocean Master And Vulko Riding Cool Underwater Creatures

Check Out Aquamans Ocean Master And Vulko Riding Cool Underwater Creatures

After years of waiting, Aquaman is finally heading to theaters in just a couple of months, and we're getting some cool looks at the ocean life we can expect to see in the latest DCEU blockbuster. The film has been teasing us with more shots of the action we'll be treated to and some of that might, apparently, include Vulko (Willem Dafoe) and King Orm (Patrick Wilson) riding some unlikely beasts. Take a look:

Of course, when I say unlikely, I only mean compared with what us land faring folks know about what types of animals can be used for reliable transport. Clearly, when it comes to getting from place to place in the ocean, we've been missing out.

Aquaman director James Wan posted this cool look at Vulko and Orm riding two very different animals throughout their underwater kingdoms. Vulko is on a hammerhead shark, while Orm is standing fiercely atop an animal I can admit to never hearing of before, a tylosaur.

While most of you will probably know what a hammerhead shark is, if you're not up on your prehistoric marine life, you'll be just as in the dark on the tylosaur as I was. More commonly known as tylosaurus, this animal was a predatory marine lizard that averaged 40 feet in length, which probably used its long snout to ram and stun its prey, and also for combat. So, you know, it was dangerous.

One of the coolest aspects of getting a look a these shots from Aquaman is seeing how these animals will be outfitted in the film. Not ones to be content with just throwing a saddle on a hammerhead shark or a tylosaur, each creature is clearly wearing some armor. With Vulko's hammerhead (Hammy? I think I'll call him Hammy.) being the most obviously outfitted in protective plating which covers almost its entire top half, and Orm's tylosaur (obviously named Ty) appearing to, at least, be wearing gear along its snout and upper back.

Vulko might appear totally calm in his photo, but considering how much armor Hammy is wearing, I'm going to guess he might be about to do battle, or at least be doing a training run so that he and Hammy are fully prepared for any upcoming conflicts. Orm, meanwhile, seems to be about ready to launch himself off of Ty, trident in hand, pissed and ready to engage whomever he believes has wronged him.

Part of what's finally been revealed about the plot of Aquaman is that Orm, who is Arthur Curry's half brother and has been ruling in his absence, will be eager to start a war with the surface world over the pollution of the oceans, while Arthur will be interested in trying to keep the peace and finding a non-combat solution. So, it makes complete sense that both images show battle ready beasts and a clearly angry Orm.

We'll all be able to feast our eager eyes on just how these scenes are used in Aquaman when the film opens on December 14.

Why Jai Courtney Signed On For His Alita: Battle Angel Cameo

Why Jai Courtney Signed On For His Alita: Battle Angel Cameo

Alita: Battle Angel was a movie with a lot of ambition. It was a grand film with a huge budget that was designed very much to be the first film in a franchise. It was a movie so big that some of the film's biggest names had little more than cameo roles. One of those cameos was played by Jai Courtney. The role is so small that you'd be forgiven for missing it entirely, but the actor says that he was happy to do it simply because Robert Rodriguez was the man who asked him. According to the actor, he agreed to do it after getting a call from the director who told him...

There's this role, it's a little small on paper, but if this thing blows up, I'll need someone who I can rely on when we revisit it. And I was like, 'Fuck man, of course!' For Robert Rodriguez, I'm going to go down there and do it.

It seems that Jai Courtney had read for a couple of different roles in Alita: Battle Angel but, while he and Rodriguez wanted to work together, it seemed Alita wasn't quite the right time. However, Rodriguez then turned to Courtney when he needed somebody to fill the role of Motorball star Jashugan.

It seems that while Courtney's role was tiny in Alita: Battle Angel, the idea is that there is more to the character that we would see when and if sequels to the movie ever happen.

Of course, at this point, it's difficult to tell if a sequel is a real possibility or not. Alita struggled domestically, only bringing in about $85 million, but it did much better overseas and has a total gross of just over $400 million.

That a solid total number, but due to the film's fairly expensive budget, it's been suggested the movie needed to hit $500 million to be profitable, and it's clearly well below that mark. There's clearly an audience who got behind Alita, but it just may not be quite big enough. Although, one assumes that sequels could potentially be less expensive to produce since much of the technical groundwork has been done, so perhaps follow ups are possible.

Although, the other issue is that the first movie was a Fox production, which means that any subsequent movies would have to get the green light by Disney, which means convincing an entirely new set of executives to make your movie.

Courtney tells Business Insider that he has no clue what the future might hold for Alita and that he has zero expectations in that regard. It seems he didn't take the role for the sequel potential, but just to work with Robert Rodriguez, though one assumes if the sequel does happen he'll be even happier to have the chance to work with Rodriguez again.

Jai Courtney wasn't the only brief cameo that clearly was inserted because of future potential. Edward Norton also appeared in the film, as the man one assumes will be the main antagonist of any future movies.

In the modern movie landscape the franchise is king, and so a project like Alita was clearly always meant to be the first of many. Having said that, the movie practically requires a sequel simply because of the way it ended. It didn't simply leave the possibility of more story open, it left its own story before it was over.

It will be interesting to see if these cameos will ever get a chance to be fulfilled, or if these appearances in Alita: Battle Angel will just be interesting moments of trivia in a franchise that never happened.
