Three's a lot of odd, strange, and bizarre stuff going on in Jordan Peele's new film Us. However, one of the strangest things has to be the movie's opening scene. The film opens on a little girl watching television in the 1980s. Specifically, she views a commercial for the 1986 fundraising event Hands Across America. The ad isn't entirely random, as the event has a part to play in the larger story of Us. In fact, it sort of sets the tone for the entire movie, which is apparently why Jordan Peele decided to open the movie with it.

In addition to the Hands Across America commercial being important to the plot of Us, it also mirrors the film itself, because while the ad wants to be full of hope and optimism, Jordan Peele actually had a very different reaction to it. It seems that ultimately, it was the commercial which helped the writer and director figure out what he wanted to do with the movie, which is why he decided to open the film with it. Old creepy commercials also come up in both, ones from the 80s. In conceiving this movie, I arrived at the Hands Across America commercial from one of these moments of feeling as opposed to thinking. I found a real Hands Across America commercial I dont know what I was searching to find it, but I just had this feeling of dread watching the amusing, bright optimism on display. It took me back to a time where I was also afraid and young and vulnerable, and didnt really know what was going on. So I probably said, what if this was the first scene in the movie? And that began to answer questions about what I was working towards.

I'm old enough to remember the actual Hands Across America, but I'm never going to be able to think about it the same way again thanks to Us. The unwavering optimism of it all is almost terrifying, which is part of the point. Everything looks good but there's a feeling of something wrong underneath, which is exactly was Us is trying to say.

The first part of Us takes place in 1986, the same year that Hands Across America took place, but as we learn later in the movie, the commercial wasn't simply set to help set the time and place. The actual event has a part to play. Based on what Jordan Peele tells Polygon, it sounds like connecting his story to Hands Across America helped him figure out where to take the characters in his script, as he'd still had some questions previously.

It was certainly a unique and interesting way to open a movie, not to mention effective. The choice to use the commercial makes the audience wonder just what they're seeing and why, throwing them a little off balance for the story that is to come.

James Wan Got Behind The Camera For The Nun

James Wan is the godfather of The Conjuring universe, having directed the first two installments in the series. That said, he has also handed the reins off to other filmmakers as the spinoffs like Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation have debuted, showing new artistic touches with each passing installment. However, it seems that he still likes to get his hands on these films, as he actually served as the second unit director for The Nun. Director Corin Hardy opened up in a recent interview and said:

Very excitingly, James Wan was my second unit director in a little bit of additional photography. It is funny, but we did some additional photography, and you're always pushing for double what you really can afford, time- or budget-wise. I said, 'I want to do all of this, but if we're going to do it, we really need to run two units.' James is a full-on, hands-on guy and he was like, 'Anything I can do of service!' It was like, 'I really want to take you up on that.' So, there were nights when he was shooting a section in the forest and I was shooting interiors.

So while The Nun sounds like it's still very much Corin Hardy's baby, James Wan was "of service" during production to help create a more efficient process. By serving as a second unit director, the Aquaman director would go off on his own and film some exterior sequences, which saved time and allowed Hardy to handle other scenes that needed more work. Second unit directors are essential parts of the filmmaking process, as directors cannot be in two places at once. They help get extra coverage as needed, but Corin Hardy was particularly fortunate because he had the franchise's mastermind helping to get those shots in the can.

Of course, this is far from the first time that an A-list director has gotten behind the camera for someone else's film. Steven Soderbergh reportedly worked on The Hunger Games movies as a second unit director, and Quentin Tarantino famously filmed sequences for Robert Rodriguez's Sin City back in 2005.

The Nun is set years before the events of Annabelle: Creation, making it chronologically the first entry in the Conjuring universe. Set at a church in Romania in the early 1950s, the film follows a priest (Alien: Covenant actor Demian Bichir) as he investigates a mysterious haunting after the death of a nun. Along the way, he discovers the presence of Valak (the demon introduced in The Conjuring 2) and is forced to battle the supernatural to save the soul of a nun named Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga). Annabelle: Creation teased the eventual storyline of The Nun last year, so having James Wan (essentially the point man of this entire fictional landscape) get as hands-on as Corin Hardy explained in his interview with EW likely helped in the long run.

Christopher Nolan's New Movie Tenet Is Putting Together A Fantastic Cast

Christopher Nolan is a filmmaker who, even at his most generous, loves to keep the public in the dark about what he's working on until the last possible moment. His latest film, slated for release next summer, is certainly no exception, as it has just recently unveiled its title, Tenet, on this the first day of shooting. Plot details are also sparse, as the recently provided description of North By Northwest meets Inception was dismissed as quickly as it had arrived, though the film being "an action epic evolving from the world of international espionage" remains the premise.

With such a diverse and dangerous setting comes a cast of impressive actors taking on the task of working with Nolan himself. So fresh off the back of Tenet getting a title, and a few new members to its' cast, now is a good time to run down the line and see who's on board for this would be blockbuster of summer 2020! We'll start with Mr. John David Washington himself!

John David WashingtonThe first lead cast in Christopher Nolan's Tenet, John David Washington will be adding this sought after role on top of a year that's brought him a lot of notice. His role in the HBO series Ballers saw its fourth year of action in 2018, with his lead role in Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman netting him several prestigious award nominations in that very same year. Washington's recent credits also include Monsters and Men, as well as The Old Man and The Gun.

Robert PattinsonInitial reports have mentioned that Christopher Nolan's latest film is to have two male leads, with a female lead around the same age range. Robert Pattinson is the most recently cast male out of the two, with his credits of late being represented in the sci-fi drama High Life, and the western/comedy Damsel. His casting in Tenet seemed sure to set off the rumor mill, as Pattinson's name has been come up as the all but confirmed as a successor to Ben Affleck in the role of Batman. Which makes Robert Pattinson's collaboration with the director of the still highly regarded Dark Knight Trilogy practically kismet.

Elizabeth DebickiAlso part of the previously known cast for Christopher Nolan's Tenet is none other than rising star Elizabeth Debicki. 2018 was also good for Debicki, as Steve McQueen's Widows saw her impressing the hell out of critics and fans alike, as one of the titular stars alongside Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, and Cynthia Erivo. Previously, Debicki was seen in franchise sequels The Cloverfield Paradox and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, as well as the Guy Ritchie feature film adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Dimple KapadiaPrimarily known for her work in the Indian film world, actor Dimple Kapadia has been added to the cast of Tenet in the films most recent run up to production. Kapadia has been a fixture since the 1980s, most recently starring in Welcome Back, alongside fellow Indian actor/crossover star Anil Kapoor. Tenet marks Dimple Kapadias first Hollywood film.

Aaron Taylor-JohnsonBest known for his roles as both Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the lead in Mark Millars comic adaptation Kick-Ass, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is another one of Tenets latest additions to the cast. Most recently seen in Netflixs Outlaw King, Taylor-Johnson will also be seen in the Kingsman: The Great Game, which will see the famed spy organizations origins in the 1900s.

Clmence PosyIf youre struggling to remember where youve seen Clmence Posy before, well go ahead and tell you that you most likely recognize her from her role of Fleur Delacour in the Harry Potter film franchise. You may even remember her from films like In Bruges and 127 Hours. But lately, this Tenet star has been seen in TV shows like National Geographics Genius: Picasso, where she played French icon Franoise Gilot, as well as the British/French TV procedural, The Tunnel.

Michael CaineKnown quite well as the lucky charm to Christopher Nolan, as well as an actor of great distinction and honor, Michael Caine makes his return to appearing on camera for Nolan with Tenet. Previously, Caine made an uncredited cameo as the voice of Fortis Leader, guiding Tom Hardy and his air squadron in Dunkirk. Caines notable credits in the cast range from classics like Alfie and The Italian Job to more recent films like Now You See Me 2.

Kenneth BranaghIn what looks like his addition to the Christopher Nolan repertory company, Kenneth Branagh is the last and latest addition to the Tenet cast. Much like Michael Caine, Branagh was also part of the massive cast that made Nolans Dunkirk come to life. More recently, Branagh starred and directed in the Shakespeare biopic All Is Well, and has Artemis Foul ready to go for release next summer through Disney.

As the cast for Tenet continues to form up, and more details besides those provided previously are made known, we'll update this list to reflect the new changes. But until then, know that this newly titled Christopher Nolan event film will be released in conventional and IMAX theaters on July 17, 2020. So, it's probably best you find some movies throughout the rest of 2019's release schedule to pass the time in-between.
