Why The Transformers Spinoff Bumblebee Has A Female Lead

Later this year, Bumblebee will release in theaters and the spinoff is already looking pretty different from all of the previous Transformers films. Not only is the movie divorced from the events of the other movies, but it will also feature fewer Transformers and a bit more heart. On top of that, Bumblebee also stars Hailee Steinfeld in the lead human role as a teenage girl who befriends the titular Autobot. Bumblebee has a bit of an E.T. vibe, and that might not be an accident. Apparently, it was Steven Spielberg himself who recommended having a female lead, according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Steven [Spielberg] had always had an idea that a young girl and Bumblebee would be a great combination, so we headed in that direction.

When Steven Spielberg gives you advice on your movie, you take it. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, longtime Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told the publication that it was actually Steven Spielberg's idea to have a female lead in the Bumblebee movie. Seeing as how the previous Transformers leads have all been male, it was a fresh direction to take the spinoff and production ran with it. A lot of things about Bumblebee look different from the rest of franchise, right down to the simpler character designs, so hopefully, this movie is the refresher the series needs right now.

For those not in the know, Steven Spielberg has been an executive producer on every Transformers film. He's apparently been a longtime fan of the Transformers brand after his kids first started playing with the toys in the 80s. However, he seemingly stays out of many of the creative decisions for the movies, as these movies have been Michael Bay through and through. It's tough to pinpoint a lot of Spielbergian touches, other than this most recent note and a few things prior, so it's always interesting to hear what Spielberg was involved with behind the scenes.

Bumblebee stars Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie Watson, a teenager with a passion for fixing cars living in a small California coastal town. After discovering a Volkswagen Beetle in a junkyard, she takes it home only to discover that it's actually an alien robot sent to Earth to carry out a special mission. The two form a special bond, but Charlie isn't the only one interested in her new friend, as government agents and evil Decepticons come looking for him.

Bumblebee is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 21, 2018. At this point, Jordan Peele has risen as one of the most promising and intriguing filmmakers in Hollywood. The blockbuster box office debut of Get Out made him a hot commodity for studios, and his Oscar win offered him unprecedented prestige as he moved into his next endeavors. Speaking of which, we finally have more information about one specific project that Peele reportedly wants to take on in the future, as the Key & Peele star allegedly wants to adapt the classic Gargoyles cartoon into a film for Disney.

It's no secret that Disney has spent quite a bit of time digging through its vault to update some classic pieces of intellectual property in recent years. On the heels of successful remakes like The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, Jordan Peele now wants to take the house of mouse in a slightly darker direction. Per a report from The Ankler, Peele has expressed interest in getting his hands on Gargoyles and adapting the cult classic cartoon to the big screen. Peele has reportedly pitched the idea to Disney, but the studio is apparently moving slowly with regards to whether or not it actually wants to buy into the idea.

Arguably obscure to some generations (at least by comparison to classic 1990s animation like Batman: The Animated Series or X-Men), Gargoyles remains a touchstone of 1990s cartoons that a lot of millennials will likely remember. Decidedly dark for a 1990s Disney cartoon, the show focused its story on a group of supernatural gargoyles who come to life at night to battle evil and cope with an ungrateful New York that neither likes nor understands them. The show ran for 78 episodes between 1994 and 1997, so there's plenty of pre-existing material for Jordan Peele to mine if he ever actually gets his hands on the property.

One notable element worth addressing about Jordan Peele's possible move to a Gargoyles adaptation for the folks at Disney is how much of a logical next step this feels like for him at this stage of his career. Peele made a name for himself as a dramatic filmmaker last year with the blockbuster debut of Get Out and his Oscar win, which opened up a lot of doors. Peele's work on Get Out showed how effective he could operate in dealing with weighty topics like racism, and weighty themes are also prevalent in the Gargoyles lore. The IP definitely seems to be a fit for Jordan Peele's established wheelhouse of strengths.

Only time will tell if Jordan Peele will ever actually get to direct a Gargoyles movie for Disney. That said, it's an intriguing concept, and we will bring you more information related to this story as it develops. For now, Jordan Peele's next movie gig is going to be the movie US, and the project has already added Black Panther's Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke, so it could be a while before any decision is made on what comes after.

New Detective Pikachu Trailer Reveals Plenty More Pokemon

Recently, Ryan Reynolds promised us a new trailer for Detective Pikachu, and as a man of his word, that trailer is now available for all to see. But even with the promise of a new look at the adventures of Pokemon unfolding in live action, we didnt know wed see this much new material, or this many new pocket monsters, that will be included in the film. Watch for yourself, and prepare to lift up your jaw afterwards.

The basic story for Detective Pikachu still remains, with some new aspects hinted at in this trailer. Specifically, Reynolds electric mouse detective seemed to be on the trail of a pretty hot case, right up until he suffers some sort of trauma that causes him to come down with a case of amnesia. All he has is a name and an address, which lead him to Justice Smiths Tim Goodman, the son of Detective Pikachus partner / presumed dead detective Harry.

With these mis-matched partners in the mix, it feels like Detective Pikachu will come out feeling like a family friendly version of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that everyone can enjoy on a PG / PG-13 level. Theres a lot of humor in the personality clash between Smith and Reynolds protagonists, so thats enough to stand up and cheer for on its own.

But oh man, theyve thrown a TON of Pokemon our way in this trailer. Off the top of our heads, theres a Machamp, a Snorlax, a Bulbasaur, and a Lickatung all joining in on the fun in this new look. But wait, theres more, as Detective Pikachu apparently features the original OP Pokemon itself, Mewtwo! Clearly, the situation is going to get pretty damned serious if a Mewtwo is in play. Get a good look at that beauty for yourself below:

Directed by Goosebumps Rob Letterman, and also starring the likes of Bill Nighty, Rita Ora, and Ken Watanabe, Detective Pikachu looks to be one hell of a ride at the opening of the summer movie season. And with Avengers: Endgame opening only a couple weeks before, audiences will be primed for a fast and funny ride into the world of another cultural phenomenon thats getting its long overdue tribute on the big screen.Though now that we think about it, its a good chance that Pikachus Thors favorite Pokemon. Well leave you with that to think about.
