The 6 Best Die Hard Movies That Aren't Actually Die Hard

The 6 Best Die Hard Movies That Aren't Actually Die Hard

Die Hard was such a successful movie that it launched not only Bruce Willis' film career, but a score of imitators. Describing a movie as "Die Hard in X" has become a joke that's been going on so long it's tired itself, but many of the action films that followed Die Hard could justifiably be described that way.

Many of these copycat movies were as terrible as you'd expect, and while it's hard to argue that any of them were better than the original Die Hard, a few of them were actually pretty good in their own right. Here are some of the best Die Hard movies that weren't actually Die Hard.

Sudden DeathPremise: Die Hard at the Stanley Cup PlayoffsJean-Claude Van Damme was one of the top action stars of the early '90s, in the era just after the original Die Hard was released. He made several great action movies in his day, but the one that most closely followed the Die Hard formula was 1995's Sudden Death. Van Damme plays a former Pittsburgh, PA firefighter, now Fire Marshall of the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. During Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Van Damme's character discovers a former CIA agent is holding the Vice President hostage inside the arena. It's as over the top as it sounds, but Sudden Death goes all-in when it includes a scene where Van Damme fights a guy inside a penguin mascot costume.

SpeedPremise: Die Hard on a busSpeed gets bonus points for being creative with some of the elements of the "Die Hard movie." While the film mostly takes place inside a small enclosed space, that doesn't mean our main characters have to be immobilized. Keanu Reeves is our hero, a member of the bomb squad who finds himself on a bus that will explode if it drops below 50 miles per hour. Much like Die Hard caused us to look at Bruce Willis in a different way, Speed did the same thing for Keanu Reeves. He showed us he could hold his own in an action franchise, which led to many more opportunities to do so.

Under SiegePremise: Die Hard on a battleshipSteven Seagal was an action movie staple of the early '90s, and while most of his films, well, they weren't that great, Under Siege is an exception. Seagal plays the cook (who isn't exactly a cook) on board the U.S.S. Missouri when the ship is taken over by a former CIA operative who is looking to get revenge at the agency that tried to have him killed. He'll take that revenge by selling the ships' missiles to a hostile nation. Part of this movie's greatness comes from the one-two villain punch of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey, who are both solidly over-the-top in the best way possible, but it's an entertaining action movie from start to finish.

Home AlonePremise: Die Hard with a kidYou probably didn't expect to see this one on the list, but if you think about it, Home Alone contains a lot of the qualities of the Die Hard style action film. A random everyman (everykid?) finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and must fend off an invasion of bad guys from within a finite space. The fact that he does this with juvenile booby traps instead of machine guns or martial arts is really just semantics. Home Alone totally fits the Die Hard mold, and it's a good movie to boot

White House DownPremise: Die Hard in a building, only the building is the White HouseWhile there are a pair of movies that might technically qualify under the premise above, and both are solid action movies, we're giving the nod to White House Down over Olympus Has Fallen for a couple reasons. First, Channing Tatum's cop character in Down is a bit more of an "everyman" than Gerard Butler's former Army Ranger. Secondly, Butler's character is technically part of a rescue operation, rather than being trapped in the building through happenstance. Also, Olympus Has Fallen doesn't include Jamie Foxx's President of the United States, who is a fantastic part of the movie, as the guy is even more in over his head than Channing Tatum.

Air Force OnePremise: Die Hard on a planeThe second of our Die Hard, but with the President movies, Air Force One actually sees the President of the United States as our sole hero as terrorists take over the plane and only Harrison Ford can stop them. Air Force One is bolstered by a pair of great performances, including Ford as the hero and the always great Gary Oldman as the villain. The choice of location is great, as the fact that it's a plane keeps everybody locked down to this limited space. Also, because it's Air Force One, that gives the movie license to be creative with what exactly one can find in that space. And, of course, with one of the greatest action stars of all time playing cinema's most ass-kicking President, it's hard to go wrong.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Rampage, Borg vs. McEnroe, Sgt. Stubby And Truth Or Dare Reviews

This Rotten Week: Predicting Rampage, Borg vs. McEnroe, Sgt. Stubby And Truth Or Dare Reviews

It sometimes can feel rare to get weeks where movies are coming out for all different kinds of cinema fans, but weirdly we are now looking at our second week in a row of just that. We're getting mutant animals terrorizing a city, a historical sports drama, an animated feature, and a horror film. It's a little something for everyone. Get ready for Rampage, Borg vs. McEnroe, Sgt Stubby: An American Hero and Truth or Dare.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

I doubt there will ever be an end to the "animals are big and destroying everything" run of movies, and it seems like recent years have just meant more of these things. In Rampage, Dwayne Johnson plays the most ripped primatologist in the world who tries to stop a trio of mutant beasts running amok through Chicago. The film is based on the video game series, though in those games you controlled the monsters and worked to wreak havoc on cities and other areas before getting captured by the military. It's a lot more fun playing the big bad, but in this we need to root for Johnson to stop the animals before they do all of the damage.

Director Brad Peyton has worked with Johnson twice before, with San Andreas (50%) and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (43%). Rampage seems like it follows the same sort of playbook: make a movie with a whole lot of boom-boom and very little plot. It's not to say movies like this can't be fun at the theaters. There's definitely a place for them. It's just hard to imagine critics wanting much part in it. It looks watchable enough, but won't be anything close to a critical success.

Back in 1980, when people really cared about tennis, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe squared off in the Wimbledon finals. It pitted two diametrically opposed players: Borg, a quiet and subdued workaholic who took a patient approach to the game; and McEnroe, the loudmouth American who transformed tennis with his Rock-and-Roll-esque attitude. This movie, appropriately titled Borg vs. McEnroe, details the time leading up to the match and how both men approached the game to which they dedicated their lives.

Early takes on Borg vs. McEnroe are quite positive, with the Tomatometer sitting at 78% through more than 70 reviews. Critics are praising the casting of the two players (Shai Leboeuf and Sverrir Gudnason), and most think the suspense leading up to the match and the match itself is surprising. I suspect it stays in this range simply because it seems that we already have a strong critical consensus.

This week we get one set of animals running amok all over Chicago, while on the opposite side of the spectrum here's a dog who becomes the most decorated military canine in history. Man, animals have range. Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero is based on the true story of the titular character, a dog who joined a U.S. infantry division in World War I and became their mascot.

The flick looks cute enough, a story about men and the dog they loved while fighting a horrible war (which I'm sure is underplayed considering the audience). The studio and director don't have much of a track record, so it's hard to get a read on Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero. But considering the nature of the story, I think it scores fine enough with critics.

This one has that Final Destination feel to it, in that we have a "Ten Little Indians" type of vibe that comes with friends being picked off one by one. In Truth or Dare we have a group of twenty-somethings caught in a twisted version of the titular game in which not playing correctly gets you a creepy smile and then a ticket to a quick death. This is clearly a "Hey, I have a cool title, now let's write a movie" situation, and the studio ran with it.

I suppose the scares look, well, scary, and Blumhouse Productions (the studio behind the film) does have some critical successes under their belt recently (Get Out - 99%, Happy Death Day - 71%, and Sleight - 74%). That said, Truth or Dare looks just too stupid to really rate well with critics, especially with such a great horror movie coming out last week.

It was an uninspiring showing last time around, with two of the four new releases falling in range - though I admittedly had significant head starts on their reviews. First, I mentioned how Blockers (Predicted: 87% Actual: 83%) would never have been anywhere close had there not been a bunch of reviews already counted at the time of the post. I just wouldn't have anticipated a comedy like this scoring so well with critics considering just how silly it looked. But director Kay Cannon had folks laughing, and that's worth a lot.

Meanwhile, A Quiet Place (Predicted: 99% Actual: 97%) will end up as one of the best-reviewed movies of the year, and had a great opening weekend at the box office to boot. John Krasinski's flick could be back around come awards' season with critics just loving the new take on horror and family.

Chappaquiddick (Predicted: 65% Actual: 79%) ended up out of range, as I thought the score would drop much more over the course of the week. That wasn't the case, as its score actually improved with more reviews being written. The look back at Ted Kennedy's controversial accident that killed a young woman had critics praising the performances, and many wrote that it paints the issues with the appropriate brushes.

And finally, The Miracle Season (Predicted: 49% Actual: 36%) was just a little worse than I thought it would be. I suspected the finish to come closer to the middle considering the subject matter and the general "feel good" nature of the story. But the script and performances weren't enough to keep it even as an adequate film. Critics thought it was just too bland and corny.

Next time around we've got I Feel Pretty, Super Troopers 2 and Traffik. It's gonna be a Rotten Week!

This action-adventure will easily beat out Truth or Dare, Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero and Borg vs. McEnroe, along with Isle of Dogs, which is expanding nationwide. Shazam's Director Reveals How Goofy Scenes Look With Stand-Ins

There's a lot of intense stuff that goes into the making of any movie, and that's especially true of big budget superhero movies that feature tons of additional CGI, intricate costumes, impressive fight sequences and more. Not everything on set is always high tech, though. Shazam! Director David F. Sandberg recently shared an image from the set with a Zachary Levi stand-in that really cracked him up. Take a look.

Normally, on the set of Shazam it would be Zachary Levi's character hanging out with his pal Freddy Freeman, played by Jack Dylan Grazer. When stand-ins are on set, however, they don't get the full (and presumably wildly expensive) wardrobe. Instead, apparently production gives Levi's stand-in some sad snow pants, a bulky red sweater and what looks to be a blunt piece of material that wasn't even hemmed around his shoulders.

David F. Sandberg calls it "really shitty cosplay" in his Instagram post, which it fitting and perfect for whatever that look is, considering I've seen some really intricate cosplay in my day. On set, though, while a shot is being set up, no one really seems to give a fig how the stand-in looks.

That said, this might be good news for the dude standing in for Zachary Levi in the shot. Superhero costumes are not known for being particularly comfortable. Some are wildly hot. Others are pretty tight and difficult to get in and out of. Plenty more are bulky. If you've seen the actual full costume look from the trailer, there is a short cape and a bit of a bulky look that fits the character's comic book roots.

David F. Sandberg has previously said the vibe was to be "more of a Golden Age superhero." The costume has still been undergoing a lot of changes between the time the first image was introduced and the present. Indeed, the final suit may even look different on the big screen. As Sanberg also mentioned before this post:

Making suits is hard. Like painting a room you can look at little swatches all day but you won't really see the effect until it's done. The color of the finished suit didn't look quite as expected in some lights (particularly daylight) which is on me since I decided to change fabric very late in prep and there wasn't time for as many tests. I figured we'd just have to tweak it in post. The first image released though unfortunately didn't have any post production done to it.

The stand-in sort of looks like the type of Shazam! costume that a 10-year-old kid would have created for his first movie endeavor, which is sort of fitting, considering the subject matter of the movie. Shazam! Will follow Billy Batson, a 14-year-old foster kid who is given superhero powers by an ancient wizard and has to learn to play act as an adult superhero.

If you'd like to know more about how that all works, we have you covered.

In the meantime, you can catch Shazam! starting on April 5, 2019. You can see what other flicks are coming out in the new year with CinemaBlend's full movie schedule.
