Rogue One Co-Creator Is Working To Reboot The Last Starfighter

Rogue One Co-Creator Is Working To Reboot The Last Starfighter

When The Last Starfighter was released in 1984, it disappointed at the box office, but thanks to the home video market, it slowly became a sci-fi cult classic. In the decades since, there's been speculation about if The Last Starfighter could get a sequel or even be rebooted, but Jonathan Beteul, who wrote the original movie's screenplay, said a few years back that there were issues surrounding the rights to the property preventing that from happening. However, now it appears that those complications are no longer an issue, as Rogue One writer Gary Whitta is working with Beteul on getting a Last Starfighter reboot off the ground. He revealed as such when he posted four pieces on concept art on his Twitter page, which you can see below.

These ship illustrations from Matt Allsopp certainly look cool, but they don't exactly clarify what the plan is for bringing The Last Starfighter back. Fortunately, Gary Whitta spoke with io9 and described what he's working on as a "combination of a reboot and sequel" that "honors the legacy of the original film while passing the torch to a new generation." Going off that description, I suspect that this new Last Starfighter movie would be in the vein of Jurassic World, where it takes place in the same universe as the original, but follow a new cast of characters. Whitta also said that there are still some remaining business issues to work out, but he and Jonathan Beteul are working hard to make this new movie a reality. Whitta explained:

It's a passion project for Jon and me both. And I know we have a great movie here. But we still need to deal with some remaining biz stuff before we can really move forward. We've had a lot of talks with Universal. We're determined, one way or another, to make this happen. Trying to create in Hollywood is always like pushing a boulder uphill, particularly when there are archaic rights issues involved, but we're going to keep trying. That's the lesson of Starfighter... when you get your chance you've got to grab it with both hands, and hold on tight.

For those unfamiliar with The Last Starfighter, the story centered on Alex Rogan, a teenager who was skilled at playing the Starfighter arcade game, where the player has to defend The Frontier from the invading Ko-Dan Armada, led by Xur. Upon hitting the highest score on Starfighter, Alex learns from the game's creator, Centauri, that the game was a test, and with Alex being the undisputed best player, he's taken out into space and must use his skills to pilot an actual ship (called the Gunstar) to help the Rylan Star League fight the Ko-Dan Empire. It's been nearly 35 years since that movie came out, but we've seen many times in recent years that Hollywood has no trouble churning out sequels/reboots to movies that came out decades ago. So for all the Last Starfighter fans out there, it sounds like you're closer than ever to seeing this property finally revisited on the big screen.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on how this new Last Starfighter project is coming along. For now, head to our 2018 release schedule so you can plan your trips to the movie theater later this year accordingly.

Could Universal Studios Orlando Be Getting A Star Trek Land?

Could Universal Studios Orlando Be Getting A Star Trek Land?

Disney World is a little over a year away from the much-touted Star Wars Galaxy's Edge which will certainly be a major boon for the park. Now, some new rumors indicate Universal Studios might be looking to respond with another major sci-fi franchise. Rumors have been building for some time that Universal Studios Orlando is looking to build a fouth park location, and the newest rumor about that space is that it may include a land dedicated to Star Trek.

The fact that Universal Studios is working on a fourth park is still a rumor itself, as the company has yet to confirm such a thing, but that that part at least is as confirmed as possible, as we know that Universal has been buying up land in Orlando, specifically, land the theme park once owned, but had sold off when Universal's former parent company was having financial issues. The only reason to own the land is to develop something, so a new theme park seems likely.

Areas dedicated to Nintendo, Lord of the Rings and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them have been previously rumored for this new park, and now, thanks to the Disney and More blog, we can add Star Trek to the list. The sci-fi brand previously came up as the potential basis for a show that would take up the location previously occupied by the Terminator 2 3D show, but now a source for the blog says that Star Trek could get much more than a show, as it's being considered for an entire land in the new park.

As with all unnamed sources, we need to take this idea with a grain of salt, but there are many reasons why the rumor is so attractive. As mentioned, Star Wars Galaxy's Edge will be at Walt Disney World before you know it and Universal is sure to want to combat that with something. Star Wars and Star Trek are the two biggest sci-fi properties in history, so it makes sense to take on one with the other. Also, while Star Trek has a massive history to draw from that would allow for many potential attractions, it's also received new life in recent years thanks to new movies and an even newer TV series, so it's a current name that is exciting again.

Certainly, the idea of an attraction that puts you on board the USS Enterprise is an exciting one. The only question would be which version of the iconic ship would you build? There's so much Star Trek material to draw from that the biggest difficulty would be finding a way to get everybody's favorite Star Trek show or movie in the land, while still making it all fit together seamlessly. It doesn't seem that a Star Trek land is a sure thing at this point, just that it's being considered, and we likely won't get anything official on the new park until at least the land decisions have been made. We'll have to wait and see what's in store.

More Power Rangers Movies Look To Be Coming

It's been a little over a year since the Power Rangers were introduced to a brand new generation of audiences with a new origin story. However, while not a certifiable disaster, the movie certainly wasn't a hit with audiences, either, leading to a lot of questions related to whether the standalone movie could become a franchise. Then, Saban Brands broke off with Bandai, leading Hasbro to step in and take over the toy franchise. Over the past few months the company has been formulating a plan for the toy brand, and if Hasbro has its way, it looks as if there will be more movies on the way... at some point. Speaking at a conference, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner revealed:

As I mentioned, we've now announced the acquisition of Power Rangers. This is really a great statement about where we believe we are in developing our brand blueprint. The fact that we can acquire Power Rangers brand and plug and play that right into our strategy where we activate it in entertainment, motion pictures in the future and then of course across toys and games and consumer products and do so globally. We felt the brand was very under leveraged and undervalued. We feel we can exploit it to a much greater extent and it was a great opportunity to acquire the brand.

The Power Rangers had been a Saban brand for 25 years before selling the toy rights to Hasbro. Hasbro has a long history of creating movie and TV tie-ins for its products and vice versa, so the idea that new movies could be in the pipeline is not shocking for the company to be iterating, here. However, according to what Brian Goldner said at the Hasbro Strategic Decisions conference (via Tokunation), the brand is "undervalued" and there are a lot of directions it can grow.

The films that have been made based on Hasbro products range from movies based on games (See: Clue and Dungeons & Dragons, etc) to movies based on toys (See: Transformers, G.I. Joe). Therefore, another movie would not be out of the question. Still, considering the 2017 Power Rangers movie got points for diversity but only made $142.3 million on a $100 million production budget---and those are worldwide numbers, not domestic -- it seems reasonable that the toy company might want a hard or soft reboot before it moved forward with another big screen project. The cool thing about keeping up with the current cast and format would be, honestly --and with minor spoilers-- the Power Rangers movie closed out with an end-credits scene that featured a teacher calling out the name "Tommy Oliver" in detention. That potentially sets up the introduction of the fan-favorite Green Ranger if a second movie were to be made. Skipping another origin story might be ideal, too.

Keeping all of this in mind, Hasbro is still new to the Power Rangers game, and will have plenty of stuff to deal with related to the brand in the coming months. In fact, the first line of toys isn't expected to appear until the spring of 2019. For now, Hasbro and Paramount have the Bumblebee spinoff coming, and we'll keep you posted as that flick gets closer to release date.

If he made them look just like the Power Rangers suits from the show, then some people would claim they look too cheesy for a live-action movie that's aiming for a more realistic tone. To avoid that, he settled on creating them as alien armor, which should fit within the scope of the movie.

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner has announced that more Power Rangers movies are on the way. This is exciting news for Power Rangers fans who have been waiting for any news regarding the superheroes and
