Ant-Man Left An Important Storyline Open, And The Director Really Wants To Go Back And Address It

While Ant-Man And The Wasp did a great job as a story capitalizing on the previous on-screen adventures of Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne, there is one plot thread from their first movie that has yet to be concluded. At the end of Ant-Man, Mitchell Carson (played by Martin Donovan) was shown grabbing a vile of Cross Particles before escaping the soon-to-be-imploded Pym Tech building, and in the last three years we haven't heard anything about his whereabouts or what he's done with the shrinking material. It remains as a lingering mystery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it should be recognized that director Peyton Reed knows it's a question worthy of answering, and told me in a recent interview,

It's certainly something we talked about, because it was this dangling thing from the first movie: there are some Cross Tech particles out there. So we talked for a long time about whether we were going to actively pursue it in this movie, and we eventually sort of felt like, 'I don't feel like we want to double back and deal with that thing if it's not germane to the plot of this movie.' But it's still out there!

Earlier this week I sat down with Peyton Reed at the 10 Years of Art in the Marvel Cinematic Universe event at the Hero Complex Gallery in Los Angeles, and it was in the midst of our conversation that I brought up Mitchell Carson. I was curious if the character was ever in the mix for the story being told in Ant-Man And The Wasp, and while Reed confirmed that there were discussions about him, they ultimately decided to dedicate more focus to the story they wanted to tell.

What gives this story an extra little twist is that there almost was a definitive end to Mitchell Carson's arc in the first Ant-Man... until there wasn't. As Peyton Reed explained, the production actually filmed a scene for the end of the movie where Carson has a final confrontation with Scott Lang, allowing him to retrieve the dangerous technology, but that sequence was left on the cutting room floor. Said Reed,

We shot a thing for the first Ant-Man that we eventually cut from the movie, which was a Mitchell Carson scene, because originally he got blown up in the Pym Tech implosion, and survived it, and was scarred. And then we had a thing sort of at the end where he was behind a desk at a hotel room or whatever, and a man was coming to take him out. And we actually shot that. And we shot it when poor Martin Donovan had Sciatica. He had serious back issues, so we didn't end up using it.

Of course, there are still many Marvel Cinematic Universe movies coming in the future, and nobody expects that the Ant-Man And The Wasp series will stop after just two titles. Obviously it's not clear now how exactly Mitchell Carson could take advantage of the rare technology he possesses in a third blockbuster, but that's for Peyton Reed, Paul Rudd, and the other creatives to figure out between now and then.

For now, fans can endlessly enjoy both Ant-Man and Ant-Man And The Wasp, the latter having been released on digital this past Tuesday. And if you're more into physical media, the film will be available on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD starting October 16th.

This week is a major one for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After patiently waiting for what seems like an eternity, The Russo Brothers' Avengers: Infinity War has finally arrived. The blockbuster has been teased to be the build up from ten years and 18 movies, ending the MCU as we know it in the process. It all started with 2007's Iron Man, the first entry into the shared universe that also helped to relaunch Robert Downey Jr.'s career into massive success. It's hard to think of anyone besides RDJ playing Tony Stark, although Tom Cruise was reportedly offered the role during the film's development. Cruise was recently asked how close he was to taking on the mantle of Iron Man, to which Cruise said:

Not close and I love Robert Downey Jr. I can't imagine anyone else in that role and I think it's perfect for him.

It seems that Tom Cruise was never actually going to play Tony Stark. This is no doubt a relief to all the fans out there, as Robert Downey Jr. provides a pitch perfect Tony that is layered and emotional.

Tom Cruise's comments to ComicBook.com seem to honor Robert Downey Jr.'s long tenure as Tony Stark. As the MCU has changed and expanded over the years, RDJ's Iron Man has been a constant throughline that kept the narrative evolving. Tony is always trying to do the right thing and keep the Earth protected, although his own personal issues and insecurities often keep him from doing so. Now all of his preparations will be tested, as Thanos is coming to possibly destroy the entire galaxy.

It should be interesting to see how Avengers: Infinity War honors and features Tony Stark. The trailers feature him with a variety of the MCU's heroes, while his Hulkbuster armor from Age of Ultron is set to make an appearance in the Battle of Wakanda. The stakes for Infinity War and Avengers 4 couldn't be higher, and the fandom has been preparing itself for possible character deaths. The Russo Brothers have maintained that the consequences of Infinity War were going to be very real, so it's just a matter of which beloved MCU character bites the dust when standing up against Thanos.

Tony Stark seems like a major candidate to be killed off in the next two Avengers movies, as Robert Downey Jr. is one of many leading actors whose contracts are up at thee end of Phase Three. Tony has nearly perished a handful of times attempting to do good, so perhaps Josh Brolin's villain will be the one battle he can't win. We'll just have to see.

In the years since the late Tony Scott's Top Gun debuted in theaters, audiences have fallen in love with the legacies left by its endearing characters. Few personalities from the film embody that idea more than Anthony Edwards' Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, the best friend of Tom Cruise's Maverick, and tragic casualty during a dangerous training mission gone wrong. It's been over thirty years since Goose died in the waters off of the coast of San Diego, but it looks like Anthony Edwards has finally clued us into the secret behind his call sign. As it turns out, it all stems back to the character making a dumb mistake involving a plane's engine. Edwards explained:

Goose was a guy who in real life was in an accident with an airplane where they lost an engine and he called out the wrong engine being out, so they fired off the other engine. And so as a result, the plane went into the water and so he got the name Goose for having messed up. Silly Goose is what it was.

If you gave this writer another thirty years to dissect the meaning behind the call sign "Goose," I probably wouldn't be able to guess that. Not merely a randomly-assigned moniker, it turns out that the name actually stems from an earlier mission in Goose's career as an aviator in which he told his pilot the wrong engine to cut in their plane -- leading them to crash land into the water below.

What's especially interesting to note about Anthony Edwards' explanation of the Goose call sign to EW is the fact that this terrifying ordeal mirrors the character's death later in the movie. As fans of the movie will recall, Goose dies during a training exercise at the Top Gun school when Maverick's F-14 gets sent into a flat spin caused by a "jet wash" caused by Iceman's fighter. They lose both engines in the incident, and Goose dies when his head slams into the canopy of the plane as the two best friends eject. You can watch the heartbreaking scene, below.

Knowing this new information adds a layer of irony to the sequence, and it makes the death even more upsetting when we consider the fact that Goose had been through something like this before. I swear I'm not crying. You're crying!

Of course, we will have to wait and see if this origin story gets any recognition as the Top Gun franchise moves forward into the future. Production for Top Gun: Maverick is expected to start this year ahead of its July 12, 2019 release, and Goose's son is expected to play a role in the film's narrative. Will this element of the character enter the canon when the sequel debuts? Only time will tell.
