Colin Trevorrow And J.A. Bayona Have The Same Favorite Jurassic Park Moment

Suspense is a factor that's worked its way into every entry of the Jurassic Park franchise, from the very first film's slow burn dive into dino-fueled chaos to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's tense premise involving the future of dinosaur kind in the modern world. So, it's a pretty pleasing surprise that series co-writer and Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's director J.A. Bayona actually share a favorite moment of sheer terror in the series. It's even more exciting that this moment should come from a lesser liked film in the series, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, as Trevorrow revealed the following scene as their shared favorite:

When Julianne Moore is on the glass and it's slowly cracking, it's one of the best suspense sequences ever.

The scene from Steven Spielberg's 1997 follow-up to Jurassic Park happens when the trailers that house Jeff Goldblum, Vince Vaughn, and Julianne Moore's characters during the earlier part of their mission are pushed off of a cliff, leaving the leads dangling for dear life at the hands of two natural forces: gravity and an angry Tyrannosaurus Rex. In the middle of such peril, Moore's Sarah Harding falls from the upper half of the trailer, and lands on the rear window, leaving her in quite the precarious situation, as she has to move slowly enough to avoid cracking the glass faster, but fast enough to evade its eventual shattering. Knowing this particular moment is a favorite of both J.A Bayona and Colin Trevorrow speaks volumes towards what their approach to Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom looks like. Just looking at that scene again is a refresher course on one of the reasons the Jurassic Park and subsequently the Jurassic World run of films has given us: moments of true suspense where, no matter what advantages the human characters may have, the odds are still pretty stacked against them. While there's certainly plenty of dinosaur-induced wonder, panic, and adventure, it's these moments that really glue together the components that make a Jurassic movie something thrilling.

With Colin Trevorrow admitting to THR that he and J.A. Bayona share the same preferred moment of terror, it also bodes well as a sign for the Jurassic World trilogy itself. While the franchise could have been a bit out of sync with the introduction of Bayona as the director of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, only to lead to Trevorrow's return to the chair for the third (and presumed final) film in the trilogy, this sort of shared love shows that the collaborators couldn't be more simpatico if they tried. A fact that is crucial considering Fallen Kingdom has already started to take a mighty bow at the market, and the third film in a series is undoubtedly the most crucial film the series could stick the landing with. Fans will see just how strong this connection runs when they see Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which is currently open in some international markets, with a domestic release scheduled for next Friday.

How Crazy Rich Asians Editor Turned A Mahjong Scene Into An Avengers-Style Battle

This article contains some spoilers about the end of Crazy Rich Asians. You've been warned!

With a closer look at Crazy Rich Asians, there is quite the clever shift between the light and funny romantic comedy that draws us in and the dramatic second act we are dazzled with as the credits roll. It's quite the subversive take on an ensemble comedy that critics and audiences alike have been celebrating with box office highs we forgot a movie of this genre could achieve. One scene in particular is arguably the most powerful in the film, and has nothing to do with the romance between Rachel and Nick. It's when Rachel (Constance Wu) challenges Nick's mother (Michelle Yeoh) to a game of Mahjong. It's a dense and dramatic sequence, and when I spoke with the film's editor Myron Kerstein, he noted that he considers it the highlight of his career: his Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon:

The Mahjong scene to me is the spiritual center of the film. That's where these two strong female characters collide. This is our finale, it's a big fight sequence, our Avengers fighting it out, but it's under the guise of this formal setting. Those types of scenes are kind of like a ballet or slow dance or subtle tte--tte, and those are hard scenes to cut [together]. It's almost easier when you have two people screaming at each other... So I had to figure out a way to also convey a game that nobody really knows. So how do you do that? How do you represent with looks and little pieces and gameplay here and there that this piece represents... for example, with this piece I'm sacrificing my love for Nick and at the same time sacrificing this tile in order to get this idea across on my emphasis on it.

Just like a high-budget battle sequence right out of an Avengers film, a scene such as this relies on action and careful editing for the scene to be entertaining and coherent. Myron Kerstein was able to convey Mahjong to a diverse audience, many of which probably had never heard of or played the game, and have them understand exactly what happened in the scene. He noted that he himself didn't know the details of its gameplay until he watched director Jon Chu and actress Michelle Yeoh discussing the game as they filmed the scene. He treated the gameplay between Constance Wu and Yeoh as choreography as he crafted the cut together.

Myron Kerstein also credits Constance Wu's performance as inspiration when cutting the scene, as she gave a particularly powerful performance. While playing the game she shares a realization to Eleanor about her own self-worth and identity that has been challenged throughout the film through her judgement. Said Kerstein,

It's just a really beautiful and dramatic scene that I think no one's ever seen before. Constance gave a really beautiful performance, but it had a lot of [variety]. Often times the scene was so emotional for her that she would break down, but there was one line both from the script and the performance she delivered to pull the whole scene outward. In this line 'I'm not leaving because I'm scared or because I think I'm not enough, because maybe for the first time in my life I know I am.' For this performance, I really needed to build the whole performance into this ballet, this gameplay, for this moment when she laid down tiles to Michelle which conveys 'I could have won this game the whole time. I could have won this game with your son, just like this physical game,' and I just think that having a scene like that you get once in a lifetime.

The scene is certainly quite the showdown of emotions for the two characters who both were looking in the best interests of Nick from their perspectives but couldn't meet in the middle. Crazy Rich Asians challenged the ideals of a culture with its message as Rachel embraced and Nick's affluent family embraced her upbringing with a single mother as being enough for the Prince Harry of the east. The film is currently in theaters, and will likely be available on home video before the end of the year.

Ellen DeGeneres Pushing For Kevin Hart To Return As Oscars Host

Kevin Hart stepped down as the host of this year's Oscars ceremony following a public outcry regarding homophobic comments he had made many years ago. Now, one former Oscar host has come to Hart's defense. The actor and comedian was a guest on Ellen Degeneres' show where he spoke openly about the experience of being named host, and why he chose to step down. Ellen Degeneres says she'd like to see him rehired.

Kevin Hart speaks at length about his experience and appears to be quite open and honest. He says that being an Oscar host is something that he's wanted to do, largely because so few African Americans have had the job previously. He initially did not respond to the outcry regarding his previous homophobic comments because he had done so previously, and he believed doing so now would only add fuel to the fire.

However, rather than seeing the issue die down, it seemed to only get worse. At which point Hart says he began to realize just how serious the situation was, and he found it frustrating.

I'm a little upset because I know who I am. I know I don't have a homophobic bone in my body. I know that I've addressed it. I know that I've apologized. I know that, within my apology, I've taken 10 years to put my apology to work. I've yet to go back to that version of an immature comedian that once was. I've moved on. I'm a grown man. I'm cultured. I'm manufactured. I'm a guy that understands now. I look at life through a different lens and because of that I live it a different way.

Hart says he was given an ultimatum by the Academy to either apologize or he would lose the hosting job, he says he chose to step down at that point because he felt that the night of the Oscars would end up being about him and not the people winning the awards, which is why he eventually announced he would not host the show, while also apologizing at the same time.

I don't want to step on that stage and make that night about me and my past when you got people that have worked hard to step on that stage for the first time and receive an award. I'm now taking away from all those moments because the night is focused on something else now.

For her part, Ellen Degeneres doesn't just believe that Kevin Hart should host the Oscars, she's taken action to try and make it happen. She revealed during the next segment of her show Ellen that she actually called the Academy to discuss the issue. According to Degeneres, the Academy still wants Kevin Hart to host the show and seemed genuinely sorry for the way things transpired. While it's unclear exactly who Degeneres spoke with specifically, her comments seem to make it clear that the job is still Kevin Hart's if he wants it.

Ellen made a pretty strong case to Kevin Hart as to why he should take the hosting gig back. She points out that, as a gay woman, she is certainly sensitive to this issue and understands that the early comments were harmful, but also clearly doesn't believe that Kevin Hart is the same person now.

For you to be the bigger man, for you to say, 'I understand' and to not pay attention. There are so many haters out there. Whatever's going on on the internet, don't pay attention to them. That's a small group of people being very, very loud. We are a huge group of people who love you and want to see you host the Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was clearly having problems finding a host as the announcement of Kevin Hart's appointment came much later in the process than usual. Controversy began almost immediately regarding homophobic jokes Kevin Hart had previously made as part of stand-up routines, as well as other comments and tweets he had made. Many of the jokes were as much as ten-years-old, which the comedian says is part of the reason he feels that he was attacked intentionally. Hart says that going through all his previous tweets to find ones that were damaging shows an intent by some to hurt his career.

While it certainly may be the case that the comments were dredged up by some with ulterior motives, the anger by a lot of people over the comments is certainly genuine. Now that these old comments are public, there will certainly be a lot of people who still have a problem if Kevin Hart hosts the Oscars.

At the end of the interview Kevin Hart agrees to think about the situation, and if the Academy really is still interested in having Hart host the show, then it seems that it's possible we could see Kevin Hart on the Oscar stage after all. Hart has apologized again, which was apparently the organization's condition to have him host, so perhaps if Hart decides he's willing, this could happen after all.

We're now less than two months away from the ceremony and no host has been announced for the show. Ellen suggests, and it's certainly possible that she's right, that the reason no new host has been announced could be because the Academy was still hoping to make a deal with Kevin Hart. At this point, whoever becomes host won't have much time to put a show together

Of course, the larger issue that Kevin Hart says was the main reason that he was stepping down, that the night would be about him, is still potentially an issue. The narrative changes slightly, and it becomes about how the host that left came back, but the initial controversy will certainly be back and while it's difficult to guess just how much the media of the night will be focused on him, a lot of it certainly will be.

Certainly, this story is not over yet. If Hart does return, we can expect a lot of different reactions from many different corners. If he does not, then the Academy only has a few weeks to figure out who the new host is and put together a show, or alternatively, try to put a show together with no host at all, which is certainly a possibility which has happened before.
