Marvel Is Reportedly Not Rushing To Bring The X-Men To The MCU

Since the Disney/Fox merger was finalized earlier this year, Marvel Studios obtained the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters. However, these new toys the MCU can now play with arent as shiny and new as they once were. Theyve been the center of some of the most disappointing entries to the comic book genre and are going to need some major touch-ups and facelifts.

Dark Phoenix leaves behind a depressing whimper for the long-running and once highly-successful X-Men franchise. The recent release just became the most disappointing X-Men movie with a $33 million opening weekend and brutal beating by critics. The movie is now likely facing over $100 million on losses. Its then no surprise Marvel Studios executives are shelving a reboot for the franchise... for now anyway. In one producers words:

There is no rush to bring the X-Men to the marketplace after this. And when they come back, its going to extend Marvels run another 10 years.

After audiences watched as Foxs X-Men franchise burst into flames, allowing time to let the dust settle is a good call for Marvel. But once it does, it looks like the studio will develop a full-blown franchise that will explore mutant stories for a decade, per THR.

So while it will be a few years from now at the very least before the X-Men join the ranks of the MCU, Marvel Chief Kevin Feige has previously shown his excitement to implement these additional riches of comic book characters to his highly-successful franchise. Check out what he said:

The specifics of what it means remains to be seen, but overall its wonderful and it feels like these characters have come home. It will be nice to have what every other [intellectual property] holder that I can think of has, which is access to all their IP. Imagine if Donald Duck was at another studio. Imagine if Goofy or Moana were someplace else and you didnt have access to them even though they are yours.

There could be something special about more of Marvel operating under the same umbrella. The Avengers and X-Men all under the same family. For it to pay off in a way that pleases fans, it will take some planning on the studios part.

Marvel already has Phase 4 under development to oversee, with movies including Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi, Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 expected to be coming up-- which fills the calendar for the studio for years to come. Marvel is in a good place and it makes sense for the studio to let these other established and upcoming storylines play out before adding X-Men into the mix.

Dark Phoenix has the team of mutants in the 90s who go on a space mission that goes wrong when Jean Grey absorbs the power of a solar flare and new powers with it. The movie follows 2017s X-Men: Apocalypse, which was also a disappointment for the franchise as it made $200 million less than 2014s Days of Future Past.

While X-Men fans will have to be patient, it looks like Disneys Marvel Studios sees great potential in rebooting the franchise when they do.

Why Avengers: Endgame Cant Really Be Affected By The Captain Marvel Movie

The way that Marvel Studios maps out its releases, there are very few coincidences, but more than a few happy accidents. For example, Spider-Man (Tom Holland) was only inserted into Captain America: Civil War after it was known that Sony would share the rights to the character, which also led to Spider-Man: Homecoming.

But contrary to popular belief, the current MCU blockbuster, Captain Marvel, cant really have as big of an impact on this months Avengers: Endgame, for a very specific reason: Namely, Joe and Anthony Russo planned out and actually shot the bulk of Endgame long before Marvel even told them that there was going to BE a Captain Marvel movie.

The Russos basically filmed Endgame and Infinity War back to back, and so when we recently spoke with Anthony and asked him if the response to Anna Boden and Ryan Flecks Captain Marvel was encouraging, he honestly explained:

Part of the thing that I've always loved about Marvel, my brother and I have really appreciated it, is that Marvel has had this whole attitude of One movie at a time. They want every movie to be everything it can be when its time for that movie to be made. And then once it's made, you carry the story forward from there. And it's been really effective. Obviously by now, because Marvel is making more movies per year, and because we made these two movies back to back, we couldn't really use that process at this point.So the truth is we made these movies long before we could appreciate anything about [Captain Marvel]. Certainly not even how the audiences would react to Captain Marvel in her own standalone film. We had to make these movie before the idea of that film even exists. So our approach to the storytelling in regards to that character was just coming very specifically from the needs of this story.

People might not realize that Joe and Anthony Russo filmed a lot of Avengers: Infinity War and the continuation, which would become Avengers: Endgame, at the same time. In fact, when CinemaBlend traveled to the set of the movies in Atlanta years ago, we learned about scenes that we never saw in Infinity War, and many people on set for those days were never 100% sure what movie they were filming at any given time.

So from the sound of it, the Russos always knew that they were going to have Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in Endgame, but didnt know at all how her movie would set her up, or be received, when they filmed her parts years ago. I brought up to Anthony Russo that this sounds similar to them using Wakanda as a key location in Infinity War, long before audiences saw the movie Black Panther. But he clarified:

Back then, it was easier because we launched that character in Civil War. We had already begun, with our partners Markus and McFeely on the writing side, sort of creating and tracking that narrative forward. Certainly, what the Black Panther film with Ryan Coogler brought to that was a great surprise to us, and a thrill for us. But that was a little easier in the sense that we already had deep roots in that character on a narrative level.

Thankfully, for Marvel Studios, most audiences are gravitating toward Carol Danvers, and are digging Captain Marvel. Her movie has grossed nearly $1 billion at the global box office, and audiences are ready to see her fighting alongside the Avengers as they get vengeance on Thanos (Josh Brolin). But the current movie had no effect on the planning on Endgame, and now you know the reason why.

Back at the tail end of 2016, MoviePass head honcho Mitch Lowe announced that the service would cut prices drastically in the hopes it could increase subscribers as well as the number of attendees at the movies. In 2017, MoviePass launched its $10 passes and various iterations of the pass have been available via various outlets in the months since. The result is that MoviePass has landed millions of subscribers, and with such a heavy volume user base, the subscription movie service has started making changes. One big change actually happened this weekend, as MoviePass made it impossible for its users to go see the same movie twice using its pass. The move coincided with the big release of Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War this weekend.

The change came to section 2.3 of MoviePass' terms of service on Friday, and you can see the new change in ALL CAPS, below.

A valid MoviePass subscription to the Service entitles you to: (1) see one (1) 2D film per calendar day through MoviePass; and (2) a single seat, depending on availability, for a 2D film showing open to the general public. The Service excludes premium showings such as: 3D films, IMAX, 4D, XD and specialty theaters. The Service is available every day of the week, subject to the theater being open, inventory, and usage. THE SERVICE PROHIBITS REPEAT VIEWINGS OF THE SAME MOVIE. Alternative or future MoviePass Service subscription plans may include (1) premium plans that provide access to 3D, IMAX, and specialty formats and (2) capped plans (limited amount of movies per month.)

The part about the service prohibiting "repeat viewings" only came into effect this weekend, but it's one of several changes that MoviePass has made since the company first offered its $10 MoviePass. Although MoviePass has seen a lot of success with its business model, even hitting 2 million subscribers, about 5 months ago the service made changes to its terms of use, at that time noting that Moviepass "reserves the right" to change its policies as well as "ticket availability" to its members. The change to seeing a movie more than once is an example of one of the ways MoviePass has changed its policies, and it may not be the end to those changes. MoviePass had also previously blocked service to some members and to some screenings of popular movies, including Red Sparrow.

MoviePass is not a new business, but it saw an explosion in growth over the past 12 months. Because of this, it's not a huge surprise that the service would see changes as it tested limits and tried to make money. There have been kinks; some customers have had problems getting their MoviePass cards after ordering and have experienced other customer service problems. The service has also tinkered with different price models, something that Netflix also did (and continues to do) after it started becoming more popular.

As for this particular change, making the move right as the summer movie season kicks off is prescient. Not only has Avengers: Infinity War already made more money on opening weekend than any other movie in history -- including Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- there are a slew of other big movies coming up like Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story, plus a ton of other stuff later this summer. If MoviePass needs to make changes to its terms of service, before the summer season is the time to do it.
