Why Star Wars Fans Are Convinced Mark Hamill Is Returning As Luke In Episode IX

Many people were sad to see Luke Skywalker go at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but a new clue has surfaced which has made some wonder if it might mean we will, in fact, see Luke again in Star Wars Episode IX. While it may not seem like much, as we get closer to the beginning of filming of the final episode of the new trilogy, everything is suspect, and the newest interesting decision is the fact that Mark Hamill has shaved off his Skywalker beard, something noticed in a recent tweet.

Mark Hamill has had a beard for the last few years, more or less, and it was mostly contractually obligated as part of his work on the two previous Star Wars films. However, the beard has been hanging around on Mark Hamill's face up until fairly recently. Some wonder if the fact that Hamill has chosen to shave now, just as filming on Star Wars Episode IX is about to begin, is evidence that we'll see a beardless Force Ghost Luke.

To be sure, the fact that Mark Hamill has shaved could mean anything. It could be for any other film or TV role that he's doing or it could be that, since he's not in Episode IX he doesn't need to keep the facial hair and has just decided to be done with it. However, as we saw other actors making some physical changes, like Billy Dee Williams mentioning he was working with a personal trainer, before it was confirmed he would be back as Lando in Episode IX, the timing is certainly interesting.

The idea that Luke Skywalker would return in Episode IX as a Force Ghost is certainly nothing new. Luke's last words to Kylo Ren were "see you around, kid" after all, and Luke left the galaxy and became one with the Force on his own terms, much like his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi. What's interesting, is that if Luke does appear as a ghost, it appears he will be clean shaven. The rules of how Force Ghosts work isn't entirely clear. In the Special Edition version of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, we see Anakin Skywalker appear as his younger self before he turned to the Dark Side and became Darth Vader. If a Jedi has the power to choose how they appear, perhaps Luke will choose to appear as he looked long ago as well, before he made the wrong decision with Ben Solo.

Even if we're going to see a clean shaven Force Ghost Luke in Episode IX, it's impossible to know if that will be confirmed between now and December of 2019. Luke was kept under wraps for his small appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and since his role may not be much larger in Episode IX , it's possible J.J. "Mystery Box" Abrams will attempt to do the same here.

James Cameron Reveals What Really Happened With Matthew McConaughey And Titanic

Alright, alright, alright did you know Matthew McConaughey was once up for the role of Jack Dawson in James Camerons 1997 epic Titanic? Thats right: Wolf of Wall Street costars McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio, in their early acting days, were both up to paint Rose like one of their French girls... but in the end there could only be one.

When the director recently made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he was asked about what exactly went down when he was tasked with casting Jack and why Leonardo DiCaprio got it over Matthew McConaughey. Explaining himself, apparently the choice had a lot to do with the former's particular magnetism with the opposite sex. Said Cameron,

Matthew read for the part and then we met Leo. Leo came in for an interview and I had this weird thing: I looked around the room and every woman in the building was in the meeting the accountant was there, the female security guard, so I thought maybe I better cast this guy.

There you have it! While casting for Titanic, James Cameron got a front row seat to a young Leonardo DiCaprios appeal to a female audience and couldnt pass up giving him the job.

At the time of DiCaprios audition, he already scored an Oscar nomination at 20 years old for Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, and had already earned a growing following thanks to his performances on the television show Growing Pains, and in movies like The Basketball Diaries and Romeo + Juliet.

McConaughey on the other hand was just starting out, likely only known for his breakout role in Dazed and Confused at the time. He just hadnt hit heartthrob status yet. Of course a few years later he became a rom-com regular in hits such as The Wedding Planner and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Matthew McConaughey spoke out about the bummer back in November 2018, confirming that he had a good audition for Jack with Kate Winslet, and was confident about it, but was never offered the role. Rejection is part of any actors journey and McConaughey was not immune to this, even though he found incredible success in the medium with other roles.

Its an interesting behind-the-scenes bit of info about what could have been, but we cant imagine anyone other than Leonardo DiCaprio being the Jack to Kate Winslets Rose in Titanic. Of course, McConaughey ended up scoring a role in another memorable film from 1997, Contact, alongside Jodie Foster, and that certainly earned him a lot of attention.

In addition to revealing some inside details about Titanic on Jimmy Fallon, James Cameron teased the return of Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator: Dark Fate coming this fall, his planned Avatar sequels, and the Alita: Battle Angel, which he wrote and produced.Take a look at the interview:

The director certainly has a lot of exciting movies coming up. The fact that we are talking about the making of Titanic 22 years later, however, certainly informs how impactful his past work has been over the years. While Matthew McConaughey didnt end up being part of Titanic, losing out to DiCaprio didnt hurt the future of his career.

Fans of James Cameron can look forward to Alita in theaters on February 14th, Terminator: Dark Fate on November 1st, and Avatar 2 in December 2020.
