Catch The First Look At Samuel L. Jackson In Shaft

People are pretty pumped about seeing Samuel L. Jackson without an eyepatch in Captain Marvel, but now the actor has given fans another reason to get excited about the actor. Jackson is set to return as Shaft and this week we saw the first look at the character and the new cast. Check it out.

The new Shaft is bringing back Samuel L. Jackson as John Shaft II, but the story is expected to focus on his kid, John Shaft Jr. The son of Shaft will convince his dad to help after his friend dies under odd circumstances. Eventually, the original Shaft will also get involved in the story, which initially rolled with the tile Son of Shaft.

As you can see in the image, Richard Roundtree and Samuel L. Jackson will both be back reprising their roles and Jessie Usher is on board as John Shaft III. Alexandra Shipp is the actress factoring into the first look image. This isn't the first time the three generations of Shaft actors have taken a photo together, but it is our best look at the cast in costume.

I've previously mentioned Captain Marvel and Shaft, but Samuel L. Jackson is going to be a busy guy in 2019. He's notably doing M. Night Shyamalan's Glass in January. He's in Captain Marvel in March and listed for Spider-Man: Far From Home in July. He's in a movie called The Last Full Measure and has The Banker coming next year as well.

Shaft is expected to come out in June. A sequel to The Hitman's Bodyguard called The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard is also in the works.

Let's just reflect on this for a minute. The average movie star--like a-list person who is in demand for big roles--usually does one movie a year, maybe two. Samuel L. Jackson is doing six. Six!

The dude's 70 years old. If he were a regular plebeian he'd be sitting around and tinkering with his BBQ recipe or some other old dude trope at this point, but instead he's going to be busier than he was at many of the other points in his career.

For the new Shaft, he's even teaming up with Richard Roundtree for an epic movie event. Although reboots and remakes are becoming more and more common, this one in particular has a lot going for it, especially in regards to its cast. That's why it's so crazy that Shaft may not even be Samuel L. Jackson's most anticipated movie next year.

Jessica Chastain's Eve Loses Director After Massive Backlash

At the beginning of August, Jessica Chastain announced that, through her production company, she would be producing and starring in a new character-driven action film called Eve. Australian director Matthew Newton, who also wrote the film, was set to direct and produce. This announcement was met with swift and fierce backlash against the actress and the film because Matthew Newton plead guilty to assaulting his girlfriend in Australia back in 2007. Amid the backlash, Matthew Newton has now left the project.

Matthew Newton, whose most recent film, the critically acclaimed Who We Are Now, released in the U.S. earlier this year, seems to have left Eve voluntarily, according to Deadline. He released a statement addressing the criticisms, acknowledging his past mistakes, the efforts he's made to change and his desire to do better in the future and contribute to the positive change occurring in the industry. A replacement director for Eve has not been announced at this time.

In light of the ongoing #MeToo movement and Time's Up campaign, Jessica Chastain was criticized for working with Matthew Newton. Jessica Chastain has been a vocal supporter of those movements and has spoken about female empowerment and equal pay, so for some fans, her working with Matthew Newton seemed hypocritical. So petitions started popping up and there was a great deal of criticism on social media, which clearly they heard because Matthew Newton will no longer be directing Eve. By dropping out, Matthew Newton seemingly spares the film from further controversy on his account.

What is interesting here is that similar to the James Gunn situation with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the script is already written, as Eve is based on Matthew Newton's original script. So unless they scrap the script, his name would seemingly still be on the film should it find a new director and make it to theaters, leaving it still open to controversy. Although the script is already written and presumably paid for, and not as much attention is paid to who wrote a film as to who directed it. Despite that, it is still worth noting and watching how it is addressed going forward.

When Eve was announced, no release date was given, so they should have plenty of time to find a suitable replacement for the exiting Matthew Newton. Also, other than being a character-driven action movie, the plot details for Eve are being kept under wraps at this time.

The Russo Brothers Were Urged By A Marvel Exec To Change One Avengers: Infinity War Plot

Warning: Major spoilers to follow for Avengers: Infinity War!

Before Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters, most fans were anticipating that some of the MCU's most beloved heroes might fall in battle. But few of us were prepared for just how far the film would go, wiping out half the universe and our heroes with a snap of the fingers. Along with Peter Parker, the most jarring of those deaths was probably T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman). The Wakandan king's solo debut had just set box office records a few months ago after all. Yet the decision to turn the character to dust was made long before Black Panther. At the time, Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore urged the Russo Brothers to reconsider, as he explained:

I knew pretty well what they were talking about, and personally urged them to reconsider. But the storytelling made sense, so I love that we got to see a little bit more of Wakanda in that film, and I hope to see how they're going to resolve that.

It reflects well on Marvel Studios and Disney at large that the Russo Brothers were able to make their case for why the story demanded that T'Challa die and they were heard. Nate Moore's urging that T'Challa survive came even before the success of Black Panther, so perhaps he just really wanted the character and Wakanda to have a longer tenure in the MCU and maybe at that time it wasn't clear if or how T'Challa would be coming back. Although Nate Moore didn't specify to The Huffington Post the Russo Brother's exact reasoning as to why the character had to die in Infinity War, he did imply that they had some strong justification for the decision.

What that reasoning is, we can only speculate at this point, with Avengers 4 such a mystery. That the Russo Brothers stood their ground on this matter though is telling that it is at least somewhat important. Given who died and who survived, it definitely appears that Avengers 4 is set up to be something of a swan song for the original Avengers team that came together in the 2012 film so characters like Black Panther might not be featured as prominently. It is also possible that T'Challa's death changes the path of Wakanda, affecting the world at large or that the Black Panther mantle is passed to someone else while he is gone.

Of course, we all know that T'Challa is not permanently gone. If Black Panther 2 was ever a question mark before the first film came out, it is just about the most certain thing we can count on for sure in Phase 4 after Black Panther's performance this year. The character is now one of the MCU's most popular and his sequel film is inevitable and thus T'Challa, like Peter Parker, will not stay dead long. Even knowing this, T'Challa's death was still shocking in the film because of the popularity of the character. This ending has meaning because while we know that the king will return, we still feel sadness for the pain of those left behind who imagine him gone for good, like Nakia and Okoye, and possibly Shuri.
