Why The Strangers: Prey At Night Isn't A Direct Sequel

In 2008, a group of masked killers claimed its first victims when Bryan Bertino's The Strangers debuted in theaters. Liv Tyler's Kristen and Scott Speedman's James weren't lucky enough to make it out of their remote house alive, and now the rampage continues ten years later with Johannes Roberts' The Strangers: Prey at Night. Fans of the original have clamored for a sequel for the last decade, and CinemaBlend recently had a chance to sit down with Roberts and talk about why Prey at Night doesn't directly deal with the fallout of the first movie. According to Roberts, though they did consider a direct sequel, they ultimately wanted to make Prey at Night its own thing. The British director explained:

Anything you can possibly imagine has been kicked around over the ten years. I'm sure they had Strangers in space at one point. A lot of different scenarios had been kicked around. When I took the project on one of the things that was in my mind was how direct a sequel this was gonna be. How many references to the original movie and all of that. We went back and forth and in the end felt that the thing that I really wanted to do was make this its own. That it fit the into the world of The Strangers but that it just was its own beast. There's a lot of little nods there and we played around with that, and we did kick around like 'What if Scott? What if Liv?'

Based on those remarks, it sounds like a number of different ideas for The Strangers 2 came and went as the years passed and the project continued to develop. There was a period in which the folks behind the film considered bringing James and Kristen back, or at least dealing with the fallout of their murders. However, the introduction of 47 Meters Down's Johannes Roberts to the equation sent the film down a path that ultimately turned it into an anthology focusing on a new set of victims hunted by the same killers.

That's not to say that there aren't elements of The Strangers DNA that show up in The Strangers: Prey at Night. Even from the sequel's earliest trailers, it's clear to see that The Strangers are using many of the same hunting techniques that they implemented in the first film, such as knocking on the door before the attack and drawing on the windows. Moreover, Johannes Roberts also made a point to note to CinemaBlend that this is definitely the same group of killers seen in the first film, rather than a group of Scream-esque copycats. James and Kristen were still definitely murdered in this world; Prey at Night just doesn't go out of its way to say anything about it because it's not germane to the story the sequel wants to tell.

The Strangers will hunt their prey at night when The Strangers: Prey at Night debuts in theaters tomorrow, March 9. Watch out for the love letter to classic slasher flicks, and make sure to keep an eye on all of the most highly-anticipated horror movies as 2018 kicks into high gear!

Big Brother Winner Has Saved Two People Having Seizures In Movie Theaters

Dr. Will Kirby is a popular dermatologist in Southern California who has simultaneously built himself a TV career following an appearance on Big Brother that led to him winning Season 2 of the hit CBS show. He may soon be more known as a doer of good deeds, however, after having helped not one but two seizure victims at a movie theater over the weekend. Here's what happened.

On Friday, the doctor was visiting the Cinemark Playa Vista movie theater with his wife, reality TV star Erin Brodie, when a man began having a seizure in the front row of the theater. Dr. Will Kirby did what many doctors would in the situation. He sprinted into action, per TMZ. One he got to the front of the theater and stabilized the man having the seizure, he also stayed with him for nearly 20 minutes until emergency medical services was able to take the man to the hospital. After nabbing some applause, the theater played the second half of the film for audiences, who patiently waited while the medics came and did their thing.

The movie in question that the former Big Brother contestant was seeing was the brand new comedy Blockers. It wasn't the only movie theater in Cinemark Playa Vista causing seizures that night. After Dr. Will Kirby finished helping the man in the Blockers screening, theater workers actually asked the doctor to pop into a screening of new horror movie A Quiet Place, where a young woman was also suffering a seizure. Improbable? Yes. Did it happen? Also yes. Dr. Will Kirby reportedly also helped that woman until medics arrived, and received another standing ovation for his troubles.

I'm not sure how common it is for people who occasionally have seizures to suffer them at the movies, but it seems crazy that two people would have a seizure in totally different movies at roughly the same time at the same movie theater. I dunno if there's something going on in the projections over there, but if Cinemark keeps causing seizures, the theater may want to look into that. In the meantime, they gave Dr. Will Kirby free movie passes, so presumably he'll be attending that theater a lot in the near future. So, there's a chance he could be on hand should this type of thing ever happen again.

Dr. Will Kirby won Big Brother back in 2001. He's also a graduate of Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and did his dermatology residency at Western University/Pacific Hospital. In the time since his first big TV appearance, he's also appeared on E! News, as well as episodes of shows like The Real Housewives of Orange County and The Doctors. He's also still known as a memorable winner on Big Brother, and has periodically shown up on that series to help out with the jury roundtable segment on the show.

It's the holiday season and that means it's time for everybody to warm themselves with familiar music and specials on TV. However, The Predator Holiday Special may not be quite what most people are looking for to celebrate the joy of the season. Unless you're looking for stop-motion blood and guts and the senseless murder of reindeer. If that's your idea of the holiday season, then you're all set. Check this out.

The movie has the classic stop-motion look that we associate with old-school TV specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or Santa Claus is Coming To Town. The elf we first see hanging out with Blitzen is certainly supposed to remind us of the character from the Rudolph special. Of course, we never see a red nose here, just red lights of the Predator's laser sight lining up a shot on Blitzen before blowing a hole through him.

The Predator makes short work of most of the reindeer but is then taken down by Santa and...Larry, whoever that is, who celebrate with the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger/Carl Weathers handshake from the original Predator. We also get an "ain't got time to bleed" line from the elf, as the short continues to have fun with the original Predator. Other Predators appear and give Santa an Easter basket, apparently as some sort of trophy for defeating one of their number. Of course, it turns out one of the eggs may contain a special gift of its own. I smell a sequel.

My favorite bit has to be the three reindeer that go all commando on the situation, but are quickly torn to shreds by the Predator. It's not even clear they know how to use machine guns.

In the end, the short is little more than an advertisement for The Predator on Blu-ray, but as ads go it's a well produced and fun one. As holiday specials go, The Predator Holiday Special still surpasses the Star Wars Holiday Special, if for no other reason than the fact that it's much shorter and doesn't have time to get bad.

Everybody celebrates the holidays a little differently and while many might prefer more traditional holiday entertainment, this will certainly work for some people. If you're a fan of the Night the Reindeer Died opening to Scrooged or "Weird Al" Yankovic's "The Night Santa Went Crazy" then this will be the perfect addition to that playlist.

I'm not sure if The Predator is going to be a regular Christmas movie for anybody, the movie actually takes place around Halloween if we're getting technical, but if eggnog and alien big game hunters are the sorts of things that go together for you, then you'll probably want to pick up The Predator on Blu-ray, which this short makes sure to remind you that you can do.
