The Spice Girls Are Starring In Their Own Superhero Movie

For quite some time, fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of The Spice Girls-- the 90s musical girl group that spread the message of "girl power." The group has been inactive since a special reunion in 2007-2008, and in this mighty age of nostalgia, nothing is impossible. Recent rumors suggested that members were planning to come back together for a reunion tour and while that may still be the case, The Spice Girls reportedly have a different project in the works. The Spice Girls are reportedly interested in starring in their own animated movie that features them as superheroes.

According to Variety, a potential Spice Girls animated film project is being shopped around for producing partners. The publication reports that all five members of the group -- Victoria Beckham ("Posh Spice"), Melanie Brown ("Scary Spice"), Emma Bunton ("Baby Spice"), Melanie Chisholm ("Sporty Spice") and Geri Halliwell ("Ginger Spice") -- have signed off on their likenesses been used in the project. Furthermore, each member will voice their own character.

The project will be a superhero movie that focuses on the message of "girl power." Each character will have a "girl power" unique to that group member that reflects each girl's personality (so Baby Spice can talk to babies, I guess?). According to a source close to the story, The Spice Girls are "fired up" about the idea and are thinking big on a global franchise scale.

While the news may seem random, it's certainly an interesting way to capitalize on current trends in Hollywood. Female-led projects are in more demand than ever thanks to the success of several movies, such as Wonder Woman. Superhero movies are also the most popular genre right now, with several studios attempting to build up their own franchise around whatever characters they can get. Finally, nostalgia is a huge selling factor, considering all the movie and TV reboots that are circulating today. This Spice Girls movie checks off all of those boxes, and there's nothing wrong with spreading a little extra female empowerment.

Anticipation of a Spice Girls reunion has been building for a little while now. The group was recently photographed together, with Victoria Beckham even posting about it to Instagram. The photo came with a statement that read "the time feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together." At the time, the No. 1 guess was that a concert was on the way, but it seems this film project will be one of these new opportunities.

Could The New Mutants End Up On Disney+?

This June will see Dark Phoenix telling the next (and possibly final) chapter of the main X-Men film series, but its not the only mutant-centric project thats set for release this year. The New Mutants is also on the calendar, but theres barely been any word on its progress for months, leading to rampant speculations about whether or not 20th Century Fox will even release it in theaters. That remains to be confirmed, but apparently The New Mutants going up on the upcoming Disney+ streaming service is a distinct possibility.

Originally set to come out in April 2018, The New Mutants was pushed back to February 2019 at the beginning of last year to make time for reshoots, and it was pushed again to its current August date since these reshoots were reportedly more extensive than previously believed. However, the latest word from THR states that the reshoots still havent occurred yet, though apparently things seem to be in the hands of director Josh Boone. In any case, now the likelihood of The New Mutants actually hitting theaters is more questionable, though the outlet states that its likely the movie will still be released after Disney has assumed control of Fox and that its a safe bet that people would eventually be able to check it out on Disney+.

With all the money and work thats been poured into The New Mutants, itd be surprising if the movie were to be taken off the theatrical schedule and moved to a streaming service. Then again, this isnt an uncommon move nowadays, as Netflix picked up Paramounts The Cloverfield Paradox and Warner Bros Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle last year. Plus, while not officially confirmed yet, its been assumed that once the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties are under the Disney banner, theyll be rebooted to fit within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If that happens, then the chances of The New Mutants getting a sequel are quite slim, so perhaps the parties in charge wouldnt want to dedicate more resources towards showing it in theaters.

All this being said, its doubtful that The New Mutants would end up on Disney+ since its previously been said that the streaming service would focus on family-friendly content. The New Mutants definitely doesnt qualify since its a horror movie that could definitely be rated R. Hulu would be a more logical home, especially since Disneys stake in the service is set to increase once the Fox deal is finalized. But the fact that these reshoots supposedly still havent happened is cause for concern, so whether The New Mutants is screened in theaters or on a streaming service, theres the possibility it could be delayed even further.

The New Mutants follows five young mutants who are held against their will inside a secret facility and must use their new abilities to fight for survival. The main cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as llyana Rasputin/Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt s Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. Antonio Banderas has also reportedly been cast as a villain appearing in the post-credits scene, but we still havent learned yet who this character will be.
