The Expendables 4 Is Definitely Happening

The Expendables 4 Is Definitely Happening

Not too long ago, Sylvester Stallone started to tease the return of the Avengers of action franchises, The Expendables, for a fourth entry. With the franchise's less-than-stellar performance in its third installment's release window, and Stallone's eagerness to further a series he's clearly having a ball with, the possibility of another movie was truly a question without a definitive answer. Until today at least, a day where all doubt has been pushed aside, and The Expendables 4 is now officially announced as a go-picture.

Hot on the heels of Rambo 5's recent announcement, The Expendables 4 joins that other Sylvester Stallone sequel as Millennium Media's latest projects on the books, thanks to a lucrative co-financing deal with Chinese distributor Dadi. With the films respectively slated for release in September 2018 and "early" 2019, Stallone will be a very busy man in the next year or so, as he's also got Creed 2 to fret over, which releases this November.

The joyous news that The Expendables franchise is returning is quite a surprise, considering a funhouse worth of pratfalls plaguing The Expendables 3's theatrical debut. Namely, the PG-13 status of the last film, following two successful R-rated predecessors, and the leaking of the film's finished product three weeks before premiere, both seemed to cut into the domestic picture for the threequel's potential success. But with the film over-performing in the Chinese market, it starts to look a little clearer as to why The Expendables 4 is actually happening.

At this time, no plot details for The Expendables 4 have been mentioned by Deadline, and leaving a fairly short amount of turnaround to get The Expendables 4 _made. Then again, it looked like _Creed 2 wasn't going to make this November's release deadline at the beginning, what with the radio silence around its production seeming exceedingly long, and that project is still on track. Honestly, just hearing The Expendables 4 is happening is enough to send us spinning into tangents on who might join the team, what big ticket baddie will be cast to follow in the footsteps of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Mel Gibson, and whether or not this film will revive the long promised Expendabelles spin-off.

The bigger issue surrounding our reporting on The Expendables 4 so quickly after learning that Rambo 5 is heading our way is that we're starting to wonder if there's any other surprise Sylvester Stallone sequels heading our way. Let's not forget that he also has two Escape Plan sequels in the queue, one for release this year and another still vaguely promised. But what else could we be in store for?

Is he plotting Oscar 2, just for the fun of it? Could we perhaps see Demolition Man 2: Phoenix Rising in our near future? Maybe we'll see Judge Dredd 2 hitting our screens. We're just kidding with that last one, as everyone knows that even when you make a crowd-pleasing Dredd film, it pretty much requires dark magic to even dream of a sequel. Yet the question still lingers as to what will come next from Stallone's camp, as it feels like anything goes in the world of the Sly.

The Expendables 4 is intended to hit theaters sometime in early 2019, but you can get a load of the current box office landscape with the 2018 release schedule. Meanwhile, your next guaranteed dose of Stallone will be Escape Plan 2: Hades, which debuts on June 29, 2018.

Whats Happening With Labyrinth 2, According To The Director

Whats Happening With Labyrinth 2, According To The Director

While the original Labyrinth wasn't a huge hit, it's become so popular in the ensuing years that calling it a cult classic doesn't seem accurate. It's a legitimately popular and well-loved film. As such, one can be sure that people are very interested in the follow-up movie that was announced a couple of years ago. While things have been largely quiet of late, director Fede Alvarez recently confirmed the project is ongoing. There's even a completed script for the new movie. According to Alvarez...

I was actually having lunch yesterday with Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project. We're very excited about it. It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can't tell you much more about it... but we have a script, and we're very excited about it so we'll see where that goes. Like always, it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they're larger than life. But that's one of the projects that I'm very excited about.

Fede Alvarez has been busy working on the upcoming The Girl in the Spider's Web and it sounds like he himself hasn't had the new Labyrinth movie at the forefront of his mind, but that may be about to change. While we knew Guardians of the Galaxy scribe Nicole Perlman was working on a script this is the first we've heard there's a completed draft though, that doesn't mean they have a final script ready to go.

The other thing that Fede Alvarez confirms to Fandango is that the new movie will be a direct sequel to the original film. Originally the rumor about the new Labyrinth movie was that it was to be a remake. Then came word that it would not reboot the franchise, but it still wasn't clear if the new film would simply be set in the same world or actually be connected to the original film. It seems that it will be.

It's been more than three decades since the original Labyrinth was something of a box office disappointment. Jim Henson was best known for the Muppets and while the movie used the same puppetry techniques, it was a much more mature and serious story. However, as new generations have found the film, it has only grown in popularity. David Bowie's iconic performance as the Goblin King is only one of the reasons.

The fact that Alvarez says "we'll see where that goes" makes it sound like this project isn't quite a sure thing yet, but it is something people are trying to make happen. Even Alvarez admits that right now he's still focused on his current film, and whether the new Labyrinth movie will be his next project or not remains to be seen.

You never know, and really right now, I'm just finishing with this film so I'm not even thinking about what I'm going to do next. But all I can tell you is that I had lunch with her yesterday and it was great.

Could we see a grown-up Toby going back to the world where he was once nearly lost? Will Jennifer Connelly be back as Sarah? We'll have to wait and see what this Henson fantasy world looks like after so many years. I'm cautiously optimistic.

No, Venom Isnt Getting An Unrated Cut

No, Venom Isnt Getting An Unrated Cut

In a time when more and more comic book characters are scoring R-ratings for their film adaptations, Sony's Venom spin-off seemed like an obvious addition when it was first developing, since the symbiote does love his blood and gore. So when the film ended up being PG-13, many fans were understandably shocked. Still, some have been holding out hope for an additional cut on home video that would embrace more adult elements, but now director Ruben Fleischer is here to dump a bucket of cold water on that idea:

I'm proud of the movie we've put out, and I think that the additional material on the DVD adds a little bit of color to the film. I don't feel the need at this point to release an unrated version; I feel like fans seem to really like the movie that we put out.

Considering how well Venom did commercially, Ruben Fleischer basically struck gold and would hate to mess with the product so many people went out to see - as he explained in an interview with LRM. The blockbuster recently broke $850 million worldwide, and will enjoy another month in Chinese theaters due to its record-breaking success. The film was quite polarizing, as the it was thrashed by a majority of critics, but has been embraced by mass audiences.

While an R-rated Venom could please some fans, Ruben Fleischer is right, in that his movie was so well received it just doesn't need to happen. If the film had bombed and the director felt he needed to show off his grittier, gorier version to redeem the franchise it might have made sense, but that is not the case that is presented here. Not to mention, an unrated Venom would probably be a lot of work on the part of the filmmaker and the various visual effects houses, given that they would need to do additional work adding in more CGI blood, for example (assuming that the "extra" footage doesn't already somehow exist).

The reason it was decided that Venom would be PG-13 was to leave room for Spider-Man to potentially share the screen with the character in the future. Writer Jeff Pinkner recently teased this distinct possibility for the sequel. However, it's unknown if that would be Tom Holland's version (which belongs to Disney's MCU making it unlikely), or a Sony Spider-Verse Spidey (maybe a live-action Miles Morales?)

Venom is the first installment in a planned Spider-Verse franchise for Sony, and following the immense success of the film everything's going according to plan. The studio might have felt that establishing Venom as an R-rated character wouldn't have worked as well with the character in that critical position, and it does make sense to start a franchise with a wider audience in mind.

But who knows what the future will hold. After Sony's Spider-Verse has found itself a few successes with their Marvel properties they might branch out to more mature comic book adaptations. For now, you can catch Venom on Digital and Blu-ray.

But the director isn't ruling out the possibility of a potential unrated cut of the film quite yet. "I wouldn't rule anything out," Fleischer told Fandango when asked if he would consider including an unrated version of Venom on the film's home entertainment release. "We'll have to see where it lands, I guess, but I wouldn't

Charlie Hunnam Still Doesn't Regret Quitting Fifty Shades Of Grey

Charlie Hunnam Still Doesn't Regret Quitting Fifty Shades Of Grey

One notorious casting that ultimately led to an actor leaving a popular movie occurred just before Fifty Shades of Grey started shooting. The role was supposed to have gone to Triple Frontier actor Charlie Hunnam; however, Hunnam left the project and Jamie Dornan was signed on in his stead.

Since news broke that it could have been Charlie Hunnam who played Christian Grey, theres been sort of a fascination in terms of the what if factor. Ultimately, however, Hunnam still doesnt regret quitting the role. He said in a recent interview:

I dont see myself in that role at all because it would have been totally different. I think what acting is, is trying to create a character and you put half of yourself into it, [a] bit more than half. So thats Jamie Dornans character, you know? I havent seen them but Im sure he did an excellent job.

According to Charlie Hunnam, the actor has no interest in watching Fifty Shades of Grey or its two follow-ups, also revealing he really doesnt want to have an opinion on Jamie Dornans performance or how the movie turned out during his interview with Newsweek. I dont really blame him, considering more than a year after the final movie in the franchise came out hes still getting asked about the decision.

As for why he quit Fifty Shades of Grey, Charlie Hunnam said:

I started to realize that my, my vision of who that guy was, was not everybody elses vision. You cant get into a film, let alone three films, totally at odds with the rest of the filmmaking community or the creative community involved in something because its just going to be [a] miserable experience... it was better for me just to extract myself from the process, but no regrets.

Previously, Charlie Hunnam has had varying accounts for why he quit Fifty Shades of Grey. This time, hes saying the character fans love from the books was at odds with how he wanted to play it. Hes also said that he is aware he would be a lot wealthier if he had said yes to the gig that eventually went to Jamie Dornan, noting,

Well, I'd be a lot wealthier. I'd be a lot wealthier. I was gonna get paid a fortune. So much.

Hes said before he was just really busy at the time the first movie was going to start filming, revealing he was also doing Crimson Peak and Sons of Anarchy and it all just felt like a lot at the time.

And I was going to shoot that film, wrap that on the Wednesday and the following Monday I was going to start shooting Crimson Peak in Toronto. I just had like ... frankly, something of a nervous breakdown.

So, it sounds as if there were myriad reasons to say no and the money wasnt enough to say yes. (Although, he really did give up on quite a bit of money.) Interestingly, Charlie Hunnam is known for intense workouts and even being shirtless on both the big and small screen. That's something that Jamie Dornan has come out and really worked on after he wasn't able to get super into shape for the first movie, given the limitations of the timeline after he was cast in Fifty Shades of Grey.

In fact, in some ways Charlie Hunnam may have dodged a bullet. Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson have had to really work to take on different types of roles in the wake of the popular franchise movie. (Although they likely increased their visibility as well.) In addition, while filming Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed seemingly went off without too much of a hitch, filming Fifty Shades of Grey ultimately ended up being a bit of a different situation. Specifically, the director of that movie Sam Taylor-Johnson has come out and said that things were so bad she wouldnt do it again.

With the benefit of hindsight would I go through it again? Of course I wouldn't. I'd be mad. It was a struggle and there were lots of onset tte--ttes, with me trying to bat it into the [right] place. I like everyone -- and I get really confused when they don't like me. I was so confused by E.L. James. I don't understand when I can't navigate a person, when there's no synergy.

She also ultimately left the franchise, leaving leads Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson to navigate the rest of the franchise with new director James Foley. All in all, though, fans of E.L. James books seem at least fairly satisfied with how the movies played out on the big screen.

While we have no real gauge for how Charlie Hunnam would have played Christian Grey, its still fun to think about how the universe would have been with a totally different actor in the role. Ultimately, it made Jamie Dornan a household name and went on to be a financial success with that actor.

You can catch Charlie Hunnam in the new Netflix movie Triple Frontier, which has already hit the streaming service. Or take a look at what else Netflix has coming this month with our full guide.
