Looks Like DC's Batman Movie Is Finally Coming Together

Aquaman is about to come out, Wonder Woman 1984 has been delayed, Birds of Prey has a release date, a new title and a cast; the DCEU is moving along. And yet we are all still waiting to see what is going on with Matt Reeves' Batman movie. The questions about the film are many and news about the project is scarce, but it appears that DC's Batman movie is finally coming together, at least according to one reporter.

We should note upfront that this is not confirmed by the studio, but if it is true it's a sign that things are progressing with DC's long-awaited Batman movie. The director of the film, Matt Reeves, is also writing the script. Based on the tweet from The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez, the rewrites on that script are due by year's end, which is mere weeks away.

Assuming Matt Reeves meets that deadline, we'll be one step closer to this film becoming a reality. At that point things will hopefully start coming together and moving toward pre-production so that we can finally see Batman back on the big screen.

Back in September, the same reporter said that Warner Bros. loved Matt Reeves' first draft of his Batman script and that the film was being eyed to start production next summer. With the revisions on that script due by the end of the year, things would seemingly be on track for The Batman or whatever it winds up being called to go before cameras sometime next year.

If Warner Bros. is satisfied with Matt Reeves' revisions and good to go on the script, hopefully that would mean the first half of next year would also bring casting news and some details about the film itself.

Matt Reeves has spoken in very broad strokes about what he is looking to do with his interpretation of the Dark Knight, from emphasizing the Jekyll and Hyde nature of the character to focusing on his often overlooked skills (on the big screen at least) as the world's greatest detective.

Of course more than what this Batman movie will be, the question on everyone's mind is who will don the cowl in Matt Reeves' film and beyond in the DCEU? All signs point to Ben Affleck being out of the DCEU (along with Henry Cavill), so Matt Reeves' movie will presumably give the character an entirely fresh start with a new actor as Bruce Wayne.

It's perhaps cynical to say, but the best thing about this news is that it isn't bad news. The DCEU seems to be in a state of constant flux, unable to find its footing on solid ground. While actors are leaving the franchise and movies are getting delayed, Matt Reeves has been quietly plugging away at his Batman script. Things seem to be beginning to turn around with Aquaman and Shazam! and if anything has the power to make everything right, it's a great Batman movie.

Ruby Rose Swam With Sharks Long Before Agreeing To Star In The Meg

The shark genre will gain a new member this weekend when Jon Turtletaub's The Meg debuts in theaters, and the adaptation of Steve Alten's novel will bring some serious aquatic carnage to the big screen. Star Jason Statham made headlines for actually swimming with sharks to prepare for the film, but it turns out that co-star Ruby Rose already did that decades ago during her time as an Australian surfer. In a recent interview, the Orange is the New Black star told me:

I had already done that. Just being Australian and surfing and growing up kind of in the ocean. This is twenty-something years ago when we did see sharks, but the idea of them attacking was a lot less frequent. They weren't as hungry. There was more food. There's been some changes in the ocean and I feel like that's why they're getting desperate and they're coming closer to the shores and things like that.

So, if you were a surfer in Australia two decades ago, then seeing sharks simply went with the territory. However, as Ruby Rose explained in our chat, seeing them was apparently less dangerous because there was a greater abundance of food for them, which meant that they would not go after humans quite as often. Nevertheless, even with that excuse, I think it is safe to say that it takes some serious gut to get in the water with sharks, regardless of how much food they have.

Of course, Rainn Wilson apparently had his own way to prepare for The Meg ahead of taking on his role as Jack Morris. Building off of what Ruby Rose said about sharks, The Office alum said:

I prepared by watching Jason Statham movies.

The Meg stars Jason Statham as Jonas Taylor, a deep-sea rescue diver tasked with taking down an enormous megalodon shark uncovered during a scientific expedition. Ruby Rose stars as a computer programmer named Jaxx, and Rainn Wilson stars as a billionaire named Jack Morris, the man with the money behind the whole thing. As previously mentioned, the movie is based on a book written by Steve Alten, with National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub behind the camera.

Top Gun: Maverick Is Getting Help From Mission: Impossibles Christopher McQuarrie

Tom Cruise isn't being directed by Christopher McQuarrie in the new Top Gun sequel, but that doesn't mean the pair aren't working together. McQuarrie has directed the last two entries in the Mission: Impossible franchise starring the actor, and while Cruise is currently being directed by Joseph Kosinski on the set of Top Gun: Maverick, it's being reported that McQuarrie is involved as well, apparently helping to punch up the script.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine with both Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise, the actor reveals that the new Top Gun marks the tenth film that the pair have collaborated on in some way, though the actor doesn't elaborate on exactly what that means.

However, Collider has apparently confirmed that McQuarrie is on board to work on the script in some capacity. The "heavy lifting" on the screenplay is reportedly already complete, which would seem to indicate McQuarrie is there to make tweaks and add a layer of polish as it is determined such things are needed.

The current writing credits for the script of Top Gun: Maverick belong to Justin Marks, Eric Warren Singer, and Peter Craig. It will be interesting to see if McQuarrie ends up getting an official writing credit for the film. He has done uncredited work before. He worked on the Ghost Protocol, the Mission: Impossible movie directed by Brad Bird before McQuarrie himself took the reins for the next two entries.

This shouldn't be read as anything other than business as usual. Bringing in a fresh set of eyeballs to look at a script and make some minor changes is a more common practice than you might realize. It also makes all the sense in the world that if it's going to happen, Tom Cruise would want to bring in somebody that he's worked with before. Not only is Christopher McQuarrie simply a talented writer, but because he's worked with Tom Cruise so many times before, he knows how to use the script to play to the actor's strengths. Or in the case of Cruise's ankle, to avoid his weaknesses.

And odds are that everybody involved in Top Gun: Maverick will want that script, and everything else, to be perfect. This has to be one of the most requested film sequels in modern movie history. It's difficult to describe just how popular Top Gun was back in the day, and people have been wanting that follow up for 30 years. The nine-year-old me who saw Top Gun in the theater all those years ago still can't quite believe that this movie is actually happening.

With the added muscle of Christopher McQuarrie, the story being brought to the screen should be that much stronger overall. The long-anticipated sequel is set to arrive in the summer of 2020.

One of the biggest blockbusters of 2016, Captain America: Civil War took inspiration from Mark Millars 2006-2007 Marvel Comics crossover series that gave it its title, telling the story of a superhero community torn apart by philosophical differences. But it wasnt always so. There was once an alternate version of the MCUs third Captain America movie that originally 3 focused much more on Bucky Barnes and his journey coming out of the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Screenwriter Christopher Markus recently explained,

There were outlines where we had the Zemo plotline based around Bucky. We had that whole structure. But it wasn't so much about pitting Steve and Tony together. When Civil War rose to the surface, it fit in really nicely into that.

Sebastian Stans Winter Soldier certainly plays a significant part in Captain America: Civil War, but according to a recent Hollywood Reporter interview with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely he originally had an even bigger role in the narrative. Because Robert Downey Jr.s Tony Stark wasnt always a guaranteed part of the film, there was initially no conflict between him and Steve Rogers to set up, so in the absence of that storyline Bucky took center stage.

According to Markus, the plotline that existed in older outlines with Bucky still had Daniel Brhls Zemo has a key player, so it doesnt sound like his story was drastically different in the development of Captain America 3. That being said, there probably were some key alterations made, such as the significance of the brainwashed super soldier killing Tony Stark's parents.

Ultimately the option of creating a big screen version of Civil War came along. The writers were able to work that iconic comics storyline in and make everything in the established Marvel Cinematic Universe fit and function as a cohesive story. Being able to do Civil War also apparently proved fortuitous for the writers, because apparently the Bucky and Zemo material wasnt strong enough to carry the film, as screenwriter Stephen McFeely explained:

It wasn't a great enough A-plot. It became an excellent B-plot.

According to Stephen McFeely, having the focus of the film be Bucky Barnes and the story of Zemo controlling him wasnt all that great. By shifting that story from the main focus to the B-plot was much more effective. It actually complemented the story of the conflict between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark too, by having their disagreement about the Sokovia Accords give way to a more personal dispute over what Buckys fate should be.

Its hard to disagree with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely given how well Captain America: Civil War turned out. It now stands as one of the Marvel Cinematic Universes most beloved films, and one of the most important given how the ramifications of it reverberate throughout many of the movies that followed it. The conflict between Tony and Steve ultimately carries throughout the rest of the Phase 3 films all the way until Avengers: Endgame, proving to make Zemo one of the franchise's most successful villains.
