How Anthony Mackie Learned About Avengers: Endgame's Captain America Twist

SPOILER WARNING: Big time spoilers follow! Please see this movie and then come back here later!

Avengers: Endgame may not close the door for every character, but it certainly serves as a finale for some huge pillars of this cinematic franchise. New beginnings and endings collide in the final scene of Endgame with Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson. It ends in a huge moment for both characters, and Anthony Mackie has finally opened up about filming the scene, what it means for the future, and the extremely touching and awesome way he first learned about it.

Okay, it's spoiler time. The Russo Bros. may be lifting the spoiler-ban on Monday, but I don't want to get beat up, so this is your last chance to turn away.

All right then. In the final moments of Endgame, Steve Rogers volunteers to travel back in time and return the Infinity Stones to prevent some very dark alternate realities. After doing his job, Steve decides to finally live the life he's always wanted and instead of returning to the present, stays in the 1940's to be with Peggy Carter. He arrives back in the main timeline as an old man, having lived a full and content life with his one true love.

But the world needs a Captain America, and Steve hands Sam Wilson his old shield. That's right, Falcon becomes the new Captain America. It's a super sweet and touching scene that has a lot of weight to it, and that's almost the exact same way Mackie learned about the scene. He was told by none other than Chris Evans, and they got to share a nice moment together.

We were at [Chris Evans] house and he goes, 'You excited?' And I go, 'What are you talking about?' and he goes, 'You don't know?' He jumps up, runs out of the room and comes back in with the script We cried. We drank. We laughed. I am very happy I got that moment with Chris, for him to not only pass me the shield, but to tell me it was happening.

Mackie told the IMDb Show that he learned about Falcon's future at Chris Evans' house. Mackie didn't even know about it yet and it sounds like Evans was incredibly excited to tell him about it. It's great that the two of them got to share a private moment about it, considering that their characters are so close in the movies.

Sam Wilson's future is looking bright, and Mackie sounds excited to see where it all goes. He also spoke about how he feels about the big change, what it means going forward, and what he hopes it'll mean to his sons. (I'm not crying, you are!)

It means a lot to me for my sons to see Captain America as a black dude and for me to be that dude to my sons. So that moment was not just, 'Hey, we're acting.' It was more of a thing. And then they cut and I cried. And Chris cried. And the Russos cried. And everyone cried. It was an emotional day.

We can probably bet on the Falcon and Winter Soldier Disney+ series to shed some light on how Sam will become Captain America. Until then, why don't you go see Avengers: Endgame. It doesn't need the help, but it's a really good movie.

How Caddyshack Helped End The Bill Murray And Chevy Chase Feud

Celebrity feuds have always mystified the general public, just ask Ryan Murphy and FX. Seeing two celebs have open disdain for each other also shows some vulnerability, and allows fans to further connect with their favorite actor or singer. One rivalry that modern audiences might not be aware of its the formerly contentious relationship between SNL alums Chevy Chase and Bill Murray. The two came to blows verbally and even physically when Chase returned to the show to host, and it actually took starring in the hilarious comedy Caddydhack to bring the two together. As revealed in the new book Caddyshack: The Making of a Hollywood Cinderella Story, the scene shared between the two in Carl's crappy apartment did it. Billy Murray was quoted saying:

I'd never really done anything with Chevy. We'd always had sort of a . . . funny relationship. But it was like, 'O.K., I liked that when you did that. Let's just keep going.' We kept going and it was funny because Ty Webb's not far from who Chevy is. So he was pretty comfortable in his space. And I was comfortable as Carl. So he could be free to laugh at me. And if Ty laughed, Carl thought it meant, 'Hey, he's my friend!' It's a really fun, self-aware example of whatever the heck Harold maintains the movie is about --- status.

As Bill Murray tells it, the two actors seemed to use their real life experience to inform their scene-- which was mostly improv. Much of Caddyshack's best lines were invented on the spot, which usually requires a level of trust between scene partners. Eventually Chevy Chase and Billy Murray could appreciate how funny the other one was, which helped them end their long standing conflict.

Of course, Billy Murray wasn't the only person to put his perspective of the events in The Making of a Hollywood Cinderella Story. Chevy Chase also spoke to their relationship now, revealing that he believes its a shining moment for Murray in particular. As he tells it (via Sports Illustrated),

We got over everything. The tension was short-lived. I have nothing but admiration and affection for Bill. He still can be a surly character, to say the least. But ultimately he's a good guy. Even though I'm the number one star in the movie under the title, I'll always think of Caddyshack as Billy's movie.

The scene in question was written into the movie late in the process, with Bill Murray having to get special permission to leave Saturday Night Live for a few days in order to fly out for it. It's played to perfection by both actors, as Carl attempts to bond with Ty, while the protagonist drops subtle jabs and gets thoroughly intoxicated in the process.

So good. You really could never tell how much Bill Murray and Chevy Chase disliked each other at the time, and their respective comedic chops are what make Caddyshack the modern classic it is.

In one manner or another, he managed to aggravate celebrities like Howard Stern, Will Ferrell, Robert Downey Jr., Kevin Smith, Bill Maher… the list goes on and on.

Bill Murray filmed all of his scenes, including the famous scene with Chevy Chase, in six days. Many people expected them to have another confrontation as they had had during Chase's return to Saturday Night Live (1975) years before. They were professional and didn't show any signs of their alleged previous feud.

It wasn't during the filming of Caddyshack but during Saturday Night Live. Murray started on Saturday Night Live in the fall of 1977. Chevy Chase had left the show at the end of the 1977 season and his movie "Foul Play" was due to be released in mid 1978. The fight took place February 18, 1978.

In the poorly-received 1997 Spawn, actor and martial artist Michael Jai White played the role of Al Simmons, the CIA assassin who becomes a Hellspawn after being murdered. For Todd McFarlane's upcoming reboot of the property, Oscar winner Jamie Foxx will step in to the role of the titular character. Jamie Foxx's involvement in the project was a long time in the making and was the result of the actor showing real interest in the film, as director Todd McFarlane explained:

I was fortunate enough, I went to my first ask, which was Jamie Foxx. I had talked to him before. I had talked to him at my office, coincidentally, years before, to express his interest in Spawn. So when he left, I thought, 'That was a kind man,' he was very charismatic, very sweet person. And usually, you have to go to the stars. He flew to my office, he went from L.A. to Phoenix, and I went, 'Wow.' Anybody who makes that effort, I owe them the courtesy of, when I'm ready to actually take this project into Hollywood and start casting it, I owe him the courtesy of going back to him to say, 'Hey, good sir, are you still interested?'

It sounds like the Spawn reboot has been in the works for some time, and at one point years ago, Todd McFarlane met with Jamie Foxx about possibly starring in the film. The actor showed genuine interest in the project, flying out for the meeting. More than that, he just came off as a good guy.

Jamie Foxx left such an impression on Todd McFarlane that when the time came to actually cast the reboot years later, the director felt he owed it to Jamie Foxx to offer him the role first, as he told Comicbook.com.

So Todd McFarlane did just that, but despite the fact that Jamie Foxx and their meeting left an impression on him, Todd McFarlane wasn't so sure that the star would remember the meeting or still be interested in Spawn. However, it seems that Jamie Foxx was just waiting on him, as McFarlane continued:

Now, I thought he'd long forgotten that meeting, but he was like, 'What took you so long?!' Like, 'Todd, of course I'm in! What are you talking about, let's do this!' He jumped in with two feet, it wasn't even a hard sell.

Jamie Foxx's enthusiasm for Spawn seemingly didn't diminish over the years, and he was still excited and on board to take on the character. This is a good sign for Spawn that the director and actor were sympatico and both motivated to get started on the film.

It is especially cool that Jamie Foxx got involved with this film considering the fact that, as Todd McFarlane said, he was his first ask. Todd McFarlane isn't a casting director, he's the man who created the character on the page. So if Jamie Foxx is who he sees as Al Simmons, it's awesome that that's who is actually going to be playing him in the film.

Jamie Foxx stars alongside Jeremy Renner in the film written and directed by Todd McFarlane. Spawn hasn't started filming yet, so there's still a lot that we don't know, but the film is aiming for an R rating.

In the two decades since the ill-received 1997 film, the comic book movie genre has flourished, making now the perfect time for the upcoming Spawn reboot. This film has the potential to be something that stands apart from the MCU films and even other R-rated fare like Logan and Deadpool, making it feel fresh and necessary. That it has such a talented actor in the lead role is just icing on the cake.
