Looks Like The New Mutants Is Coming To Theaters After All

The superhero genre is in a fascinating place right now, especially when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and X-Men franchises. The MCU is just weeks away from the release of Avengers: Endgame, while the X-Men will continue their tenure on screen this June with Dark Phoenix. But with Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox official, the future of the mutant-centric property and its spinoffs seem unclear.

The Deadpool franchise may be safe, but the myriad other developing X-Men projects have been put on hold for the time being. There's still the question of Josh Boone' The New Mutants, which will be a horror inspired mutant movie. The film's fate has been a major question surrounding the merger, as its already been delayed a number of times and still hasn't commenced reshoots. But there was some good news for New Mutants at this week's CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Yesterday at CinemaCon, Disney presented its plans for the future, including some releases that were originally under Fox's control before the merger. The New Mutants was one of the movies presented, revealed to have a release date of August 2nd. This is surprising and hopeful news, as the awesome first trailer arrived back in 2017, before the film's delays started kicking in. And now it looks like Josh Boone's ambitious project is finally arriving in theaters.

After New Mutants was delayed and Disney acquired Fox, it was unclear if/when the project would ever be brought to audiences. Some fans theorized it might end up on Disney+ as the House of Mouse rolls out its upcoming streaming service. What's more, the cast seemed totally clueless regarding the film's future and their X-Men debut. Maisie Williams recently dropped the mic about the prospect saying:

Who knows when the fuck thats gonna come out.

Well, the answer is apparently August 2nd. While the release date is an exciting update, The New Mutants still has to get reshoots in the can. Reshoots are pretty standard for superhero movies, and will give Josh Boone the chance to finish crafting his story, and allow for the editor's bay to do their magic. But August isn't that far all things considered, so the cast and crew is going to have to hustle to get the new footage in the can and included in the theatrical cut.

Despite its delays, The New Mutant has some good things going for it. The superhero genre doesn't typically tap into the horror world, especially X-Men. Josh Boone assembled a very talented young cast, including Glass' Anya Taylor-Joy, Game of Thrones favorite Maisie Williams, and Stranger Things standout Charlie Heaton. And with a release date ahead, its a relief to know that Disney is still intending on giving the flick a full theatrical release.

The New Mutants will arrive in theaters on August 2nd, following Dark Phoenix on June 7th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Keanu Reeves And Halle Berry Reveal Their Most Challenging John Wick: Chapter 3 Stunts

Watching a movie like John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum, you cant help but be amazed by the buffet of stunts and kills that make the franchise one of the most bone-crunching, knife-throwing, ammo-blazing experiences that could ever hit the big screen. One movie featuring that sort of action is impressive, but three whole films is a testament to knowing your market, and knowing how to make such action come alive in a vibrant way.

Stars Keanu Reeves and Halle Berry definitely know this firsthand, as theyve trained harder than ever before in order to make John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum one hell of a show for the folks heading to cinemas this weekend. However, with that sort of showmanship comes some pretty challenging work.

Talking to the folks behind John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum during their recent press day, CinemaBlend was able to learn just where the most challenging stunt work came in for various members of the cast. When it came to Keanu Reeves himself, there was one particular spectacle that took some wrangling to get into. Reeves described that feat as follows:

I think the most challenging would be riding the horse, and going off the side of the horse, and then trying to shoot someone. That was probably the most difficult, and probably because of what I had to do, but also what was involved to make it safe. They came up with this contraption that had never been done before, so it took some time to figure out.

Taking into account that John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum continues the franchise that Reeves helped get off of the ground alongside director Chad Stahelski, its pretty awesome to learn that this sort of thing isnt just a rote undertaking for any involved. Understanding how Keanu Reeves approached this latest film, its even more impressive a feat to behold, as his gratitude shows in every frame.

In co-star Halle Berrys case, John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum allowed her a chance to take the action chops she already had, and push them even further. This included some pretty hardcore weapons training, getting used to working with trained dog actors, and in the case of one particular stunt, taking on a circle of stunt performers that surrounded her during one of the big fight scenes her character Sofia finds herself wound up in at her branch of The Continental in Morocco.

While speaking with Berry and co-director Chad Stahelski about that scene, the following details emerged:

Berry: I loved working with the dogs, but theres this one scene that Chad [Stahelski] presented to me on the night of, and Im in The Riad. I had to handle, I think, maybe nine, ten guys, all at once in a circle. I wasnt so sure I was going to get through that in one take, and I actually did.Stahelski: I know. Nailed it within four takes.

You could imagine this, or any meticulously set up fight sequence in John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum needing several takes to get nailed down. Thats especially true when you take someone new to the John Wick universe and put them into this particular world of carnage.

Still, four takes is pretty damned impressive for something that involves being surrounded on your own turf, and involving stunt animals in the process.

Perhaps the most grueling story we got involving the stunts in John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum is the one that we heard from co-star Mark Dacascos, who plays one of the films major antagonists, a sushi chef/assassin named Zero.

Mark Dacascos character gets a pretty big fight scene toward the end of the film, in a sort of glass labyrinth that doubles as an office in Winstons branch of The Continental. As an extended sequence of pain and shattering scenery, its a lot of fun to watch. Judging by Mark Dacascos own words describing the execution of that scene below, it definitely sounds like he had just as much fun shooting those scenes:

The whole finale fight scene was just one month of stunts! There wasnt one thing, it was just so many elements. But I have to say working with Chad, who is a skilled martial artist himself, and Keanu, whos worked so hard to become one, was just a joy. Because, Ill tell you what, being thrown around by Keanu, he knows what hes doing. Hes a martial artist, hes a real martial artist. And it was just an honor and a thrill.

For as hardened as all involved in John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum get to look on the silver screen, seeing them talk about achieving such a feat leads to all smiles. Watching the actors talk about the daring feats theyve professionally pulled off in the name of the John Wick universe is just as rewarding as watching them beat each other, and their opponents, up with those very moves.

So long as the John Wick series never loses the spark of madness that sees Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski, and everyone else they take along for the ride work as hard as they smile, the world will be in a good place. And as evidenced by the results shown in John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum, it feels like that joy isnt going away anytime soon. Which is good, because the world can always use an avenging angel of righteous justice on its side.

The harrowing tale looks to capture how the human desire for adventure often backs up against the harsh and unforgiving realities of nature. American AnimalsThis seems to be the summer of amazing true stories and things get dark and dangerous with American Animals. Hearts Beat Loud was a hit at Sundance and SXSW and looks to be one of the feel good movies of the summer. This musical drama stars Parks and Recreation's Nick Offerman and future Iris West, Kiersey Clemons. Hotel ArtemisThe trailer for this just dropped recently, announcing what could be the most fun, pure action movie of the summer. Starring Sofia Boutella, Dave Bautista, Jeff Goldblum, Sterling K. Brown, Jodie Foster and a whole host of other talented actors, the cast alone is worth the price of admission, if only to see who can chew the most scenery. This film marks the directorial debut of Drew Pearce, who was involved on the story side of Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. In a riot-torn 2028 Los Angeles, criminals seek refuge and medical attention at the mythical Hotel Artemis, a hospital for criminals. There, Jodie Foster's Nurse tends to murderers, thieves and reprobates so long as they follow the rules of the establishment. When a crime boss comes to the Artemis looking for trouble, a group of criminals must band together to get out alive. I don't know if Hotel Artemis will be good or terrible, but I have trouble seeing how it won't be entertaining.Release Date: June 8th

HereditaryWe've spoken at length about the horror renaissance of the last few years and 2018 is already off to a solid start with Unsane and A Quiet Place. The next horror flick up with a ton of buzz around it is Hereditary, the directorial debut of Ari Aster who also wrote the film. Hereditary tells the story of the Graham family, who upon the passing of the family's matriarch, begins to discover the dark secrets that accompany their family legacy. You're going to want to see this movie because the early word out of Sundance and SXSW is that this movie is really, really scary. As in nightmarishly traumatic and terrifying. Still not sold? Hereditary stars Gabriel Byrne, the brilliant Ann Dowd and Oscar nominee Toni Colette (who appears twice on this list). A creepy kid, dead birds, and unsettling facial expressions, Hereditary basically has all the hallmarks of the kind of horror that keeps the nightlight industry afloat. If the early word is to be believed, this is a modern horror classic.Release Date: June 8th

TagEarlier this year, Game Night showed how much fun it can be to watch a cast of talented actors all playing a ridiculous game... and now comes Tag. Using a much simpler premise than Game Night, Tag finds a group of longtime friends competing in an elaborate annual game of that most simple of childhood games: tag. The cast includes Jeremy Renner, Annabelle Wallis, Jon Hamm, Isla Fisher, Rashida Jones, Leslie Bibb, Ed Helms and Hannibal Buress. Director Jeff Tomsic's credits primarily include work in television and stand-up comedy so it's tough to judge what he brings behind the lens, but I'm counting on the comedic talent in front of the camera to deliver on the hilarious opportunities this premise provides.Release Date: June 15th

Under the Silver LakeOf all the movies on this list, this is the one I'm most excited about. From writer and director David Robert Mitchell, the filmmaker who brought us It Follows, comes this neo-noir film starring Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Jimmi Simpson and Topher Grace. Andrew Garfield stars as Sam, a young man who becomes obsessed with finding beautiful neighbor Sarah (Riley Keough), who mysteriously disappeared. The trailer shows Sam conducting a Brick-esque investigation to find his lost love that takes him on a journey through a Twin Peak-sian Los Angeles in search of Sarah and perhaps the answers to much bigger questions he never thought to ask. This movie looks trippy and funny and thrilling and visually stunning. Under the Silver Lake doesn't premiere until Cannes next month so early word is still TBD, but I think the talent involved in this one justifies high hopes.Release Date: June 22nd

Sorry To Bother YouThe second surrealist movie on this list, Sorry to Bother You looks positively bonkers and if I'm being honest I have no idea what this movie is, and that makes me want to see it all the more. This fantastical comedy is set in an alternate reality of present-day Oakland where a telemarketer, played by Lakeith Stanfield, discovers that the key to professional success is speaking with a white voice (provided by the brilliantly cast David Cross). One of the big selling points in this film is Lakeith Stanfield, whose star continues to rise after his performance in Get Out and his scene-stealing turn as Darius on Atlanta. This movie looks patently absurd and riotously funny and quite unlike anything else out there right now. Oh and Boots Riley's directorial debut also has unfairly talented and funny cast, including Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer, Patton Oswalt, Danny Glover, Terry Crews and Steven Yeun.Release Date: July 6th

Eighth GradeThis summer marks the debut of a ton of fresh filmmaking talent but perhaps none as noteworthy as Bo Burnham and his directorial debut, Eighth Grade. Bo Burnham first became a viral sensation as a musical comedian and he has built out his comedy career in the decade since. Now, after acting roles in The Big Sick and Rough Night, he steps behind the camera for a comedy he is writing and directing. The film follows Elsie Fisher's Kayla as she struggles to finish her last week of middle school before beginning her high school journey. Eighth Grade looks to capture the incomparable awkwardness of the middle school years as kids are just beginning to figure out who they are. Kids in movies and television especially don't always get portrayed in the best light or in a way that feels real but Bo Burnham looks to have really nailed what its like to be that age in a way that comes off as genuine and sincere.Release Date: July 13th

BlacKkKlansmanAn African American man becomes the leader of a chapter of the Ku Klux Klan: it might sound like a sketch from Chappelle's Show, but this is a true story. Produced by Jordan Peele and written and directed by Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman tells the true story of Ron Stallworth, a Colorado police officer who, in 1978, conducted an undercover investigation into the notorious group. We have yet to see anything from this film, but it will compete for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival next month. The story itself is fascinating and the material is right up Spike Lee's alley. Portraying the role of detective Ron Stallworth is Ballers' John David Washington, who is joined by Topher Grace and Adam Driver and Spider-Man: Homecoming's Laura Harrier. This crime drama feels timely and the perfect story for the director whose career has defined issues of race on screen and who has also proven adept at the crime genre in films like Inside Man and Summer of Sam.Release Date: August 10th

Captive StateWe have yet to see much of anything from Captive State but this sci-fi thriller has a lot of the right elements to think that this could be a surprise genre success. Directed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt, and written by Wyatt and his wife, Erica Beeney, Captive State tells an intriguing sci-fi story. Set in a future Chicago living under a decade-long occupation by an extra-terrestrial force, the film explores the lives of the collaborators and the dissidents. There was a heated bidding war for the rights to the film, which stars Vera Farmiga, Ben Daniels and John Goodman. This sort of subject matter is always fascinating and it does what all good sci-fi does in that it shines a mirror on situations in our own world. Shows like Battlestar Galactica and Colony have also dealt with the blurred lines between terrorist and freedom fighter when living under occupation so I am excited to see what Wyatt and Keeney can do with such a ripe premise.Release Date: August 17th
