The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a fascinating place right now. Cinephiles and Marvel fans alike had to take their jaws off the floor after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, as we watched a ton of characters fall in Thanos' quest to wipe out half the galaxy. The next installment in the MCU is Ant-Man and The Wasp, which should have a significantly lighter tone. The pressure was is on for Marvel to deliver yet another hit in the wake of Infinity War, and now Ant-Man's sequel has screened for the first time. The internet went ablaze with initial reactions, which all seem to be very positive. Just ask CinemBlend's Eric Eisenberg.

Much like Peyton Reed's first Marvel movie, Ant-Man and The Wasp looks like it's going to keep audiences laughing throughout Scott Lang's first adventure with a partner. Much like its titular heroes, the sequel is small in scale, but that's a self-contained and purposeful choice.

Another reason folks are celebrating Ant-Man and The Wasp is because of the film's post-credits scene. While keeping spoiler-free, CinemaBlend's Conner Schwerdtfeger maintained the upcoming credits scenes are some of the shared universe's best.

Collider's Haleigh Foutch also praised Ant-Man and The Wasp's post credits scenes, as well as the overall film. While these teases about those credits scenes are enough to get most Marvel fans excited, it's also good to know that film stands on its own two feet regardless.

Of course, most fans are going to hope that the events of Ant-Man and The Wasp offer some explanations in the wake of Thanos' finger snap of death from Infinity War. But it turns out the film doesn't go there, although smart money says those already infamous post-credits scenes will do some set up forAvengers 4.

Comedy is obviously at the heart of the Ant-Man franchise, as Paul Rudd is given the chance to showcase his signature charm and comedic timing as a superhero. Ant-Man and The Wasp apparently has this in spades, as all the early buzz is about how laugh out loud funny the sequel is. In particular, there seems to be one sequence that is reducing people to tears.

Now the question is: what could that scene be? Peyton Reed has crafted a bonkers and quirky world for the film's heroes to function within, and it seems like there is on visual gag off limit for the Ant-Man franchise. The Wraps's Phil Owen claims that the upcoming sequel went as full tilt as Doctor Strange, which presumably means that the Quantum Realm is going to have some trippy visuals.

While early buzz for Ant-Man and The Wasp seems to be overwhelmingly positive, you can judge for yourself in just a few weeks. Peyton Reed's sequel will arrive in theaters on July 6, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

How Many Subscribers Cinemark's Movie Club Has

The moviegoing experience has changed over the last year or so with the creation of theatrical subscription services, just like Netflix and its ilk have done for watching movies and TV shows at home. Gone are the days when the only way you could see a movie on the big screen is by buying a ticket at the box office or online. Now by paying a certain amount each month through one of these services, you can see a select amount of movies per month, and sometimes some extra goodies are attached. Cinemark recently got in on the action with the Cinemark Movie Club, and the theater chain has announced that its program has hit 350,000 subscribers.

Of those 350,000 subscribers, 45% were new to the company's existing loyalty program. Cinemark Movie Club members now account for 6% of Cinemark's box office revenues, and there's a 75% redemption rate with Movie Club credits. So Cinemark Movie Club is certainly keeping a good momentum going, and since its theaters are all over the country, that number is only going to keep growing over the coming months.

As mentioned earlier, there are various options out there for folks looking to take advantage of a movie subscription service. Should you decide to subscribe to Cinemark Movie Club, you'd pay $8.99 a month for one 2D movie ticket at any showtime during the month, but that's not all. Active members never have to worry about their unused tickets expiring, as they'll always roll over. Other perks include additional tickets and companion tickets being available all month long at the $8.99 pricing, a 20% discount on concessions every visit, not having to pay online fees ahead of time to buy tickets or reserve seats, and upgrades being available for XD, 3D and IMAX showings. And if you decide that Cinemark Movie Club isn't the service for you, members can cancel at any time with six months to utilize unused movie credits.

The summer movie season is winding down with offerings like Christopher Robin, The Meg and Mile 22, but movies never stop flowing into theaters. The fall will see the release of movies like The Predator, Venom, Bad Times at the El Royale and Halloween, and 2018's final months will bring heavy hitters like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Aquaman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Bumblebee. To put it simply, this year still has a wide variety of content on the way, so if you find yourself frequently seeing cinematic tales at a Cinemark theater, know that the Cinemark Movie Club is available and on the rise.

How Ma Became A Completely Different Movie When Octavia Spencer Got Involved

Tate Taylors Ma is a clear-cut high-concept film. Octavia Spencer stars as Sue Ann, a lonely woman with a traumatic past who sees an opportunity for popularity when she is approached by a group of kids in search of alcohol but things turn terrifyingly sour when the group starts to find her a bit overbearing and obsessive. On its feet its a classic setup for a horror movie but that just makes it all the more surprising how much it actually changed through its development.

As I recently learned during an interview with the films director, while some of the ideas for the story were in place from the start, its a project that really didnt come together as we see it in its final form until both he and Octavia Spencer got involved. Originally it was more of a serial killer story, featuring a white woman luring teenagers to a horrific fate, butt in the hands of the long-time collaborators it ultimately became much more.

I sat down with Tate Taylor earlier this month during the Los Angeles press day for Ma, and it was when I asked about how much the movie changed from the first draft of the script to the final cut in the editing room that I learned just how much it evolved thanks to the creatives developing it. It started with a bit of crazy serendipity, with the director simply taking a meeting with producer/studio head Jason Blum, who presented him with a screenplay that he admitted still needed quite a bit of workshopping. Said Taylor,

A month before, Octavia told me she was sick of only being offered the same role and never getting to be a lead. A month later, I go to Jason is a friend - I go to his office to talk to him about what we could possibly do together. And they're thinking like a drama, you know, they branch out, and I said I want to do something fucked up. And he's like, 'Really?' I'm like, 'Yes!' And the day before they had gotten Ma and he goes, 'This needs work. See if you could do anything with this.' And it was written for a white woman.

But just because the early draft of the script was written specifically for a white woman didnt stop Tate Taylor from seeing it as a potential vehicle for his best friend, former roommate, and longtime collaborator with whom he has worked now on four of his five features as a director.

Coming out of the meeting, Taylors first instinct was to call Octavia Spencer and gauge her interest in making the movie with him and while she was initially hesitant about taking on a horror project because one of the more significant and outdated tropes of the genre, she quickly got more interested when he started to describe what kind of role he had in mind for her:

The first thing I did is I called Octavia, and I said, 'Would you want to be in a horror movie?' She's like, 'Am I the black person who gets killed first?' I go, 'No, you get to kill the people.' She goes, 'Yes.' She goes, 'Fuck yes, I don't need to read it, I trust you!' 'Well, you're gunna read it.' So I came back to Jason, and they were like, 'Really?' And I'm like, 'Yeah!'

That simple hook was apparently enough to draw Octavia Spencer to Ma, but Tate Taylor further stressed that what he had in mind for the project was a lot more than just having her as a psychotic serial killer who murders teens for essentially sport. And in that sense, the script needed a lot of work. It was a crumb of an idea that he enjoyed for nostalgic reasons, fondly remembering his time as a kid hanging out in front of liquor stores trying to get adults to buy booze for him and his friends, but where his interest really took hold was in exploring Sue Ann as a real character and giving her not only real motivation, but an in-depth backstory.

According to Taylor, none of that was present in the Ma script he originally got from Jason Blum, which was apparently had a lot more focus on body horror than it did on character and drama. Said the director,

There was no back story. It was not in the script at all. A woman buys beer and then they end up... well, the script then had their heads being chopped off and sewn on different bodies. So then I'm like, 'Well, you got to keep it in reality, you know?' So that was the journey. The shifts in the script came from me creating her backstory, which has empathy, and as it came in some of the scenes just had to reflect that.

To explain the exact beats that were ultimately injected into Ma and its backstory for Sue Ann would be giving away too much prior to the films release, the film really did become something much different than what was initially envisioned before Tate Taylor and Octavia Spencer became involved. And while the project evolved to become the first horror feature developed by them as a director/actor duo, the work really did become more familiar to them as the themes and proper story developments emerged. Taylor explained,

I said this needs to be about something - about trauma, and the sins of our parents and how we treat people, and then I wove that into it. For me, when movies are successful your lead is not so honorable. You relate to them, and you feel bad for them.

Like any film, Ma took months of work to become what it was ultimately meant to be, but now audiences will be able to experience it all for themselves.
