The Cool Way Dwayne Johnson Surprised One Young Rampage Fan

The Cool Way Dwayne Johnson Surprised One Young Rampage Fan

Rampage opened wide in theaters this weekend, and a lot of people went out and saw the movie. At one special screening, Dwayne Johnson even showed up to surprise fans. One fan in particular got more than he bargained for when one of the members of his party told Dwayne Johnson it was the kid's 12th birthday. The ever-generous The Rock surprised the young man by singing "Happy Birthday," and you can enjoy the experience, in all its low quality camera glory, below.

The young man, Vinny, reveals to Dwayne Johnson he just turned 12, and Johnson responds by belting out the formerly copyrighted lyrics to "Happy Birthday." He then invites the young man onstage, shakes his hand and talks to him about his favorite part of the movie which -- minor spoiler---involves Lizzie coming out of the water, a moment Johnson refers to as "badass."

All in all, it was likely a movie screening the young man will remember for the rest of his life. In addition, it's a moment that stuck out for Dwayne Johnson, too, as the actor took to social media to talk about how surprising the fans is a truly enjoyable part of the job. This isn't the first time The Rock has done something of this ilk, either. The Rampage star has been there for fans of all ages, and ahead of the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle release, he even surprised a terminally ill grandmother who kept a cardboard cutout of him by her bed. Following the release of San Andreas, Dwayne Johnson even invited the hero boy who learned CPR from the movie and saved his sibling's life to come to the set of Skyscraper to check out some movie magic. So he goes beyond social media fairly often to engage with fans.

Even if The Rock hadn't attended a showing of the brand new action movie, the numbers for the flick were still pretty solid. Opening weekend saw Rampage edge out ahead of popular horror flick A Quiet Place and bring in $34.5 million at the domestic box office. It's also pulled in an additional $114 million worldwide, and is on its way to making Warner Bros. at least a decent amount of money. Sure, it's cool that Dwayne Johnson also showed up at a movie screening and that became a viral memorable moment for the celebrity, but the trailers and word of mouth surrounding the video game adaptation did a lot on their own to get butts into seats.

Speaking of Rampage being a video game adaptation, the movie is currently the highest-reviewed video game movie of all time, edging out the recent Tomb Raider reboot with a positive Rotten Tomatoes score. That could change, but it's clear that Rampage has been a hit with a certain number of critics, and with an 81% audience score, it looks as if audiences, including young Vinny, are liking it a lot.

Imagine being a 12yr old boy who goes to see RAMPAGE with his family on his BIRTHDAY. THEN... The Rock shows up outta nowhere and surprises the entire theater.. AND THEN winds up singing happy birthday to the birthday boy. Should’ve seen the look on Vinny’s face when I was singing to him and shook his hand. Great birthday moment surprising fans last night at screenings of RAMPAGE. He was so nervous he forgot how old he was ???????????? Its all good kid, I forget how old I am too. That’s why I always act like a kid. #SurprisingFans #YouNeverKnowWhenDJWillPopUp #BestPartOfMyJob #RAMPAGE

6 Fun Video Game References In Shazam!

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Shazam!

Shazam! sets itself apart from your normal superhero blockbuster by having a hero who is, basically, a 15-year-old kid. As such, Shazam/Billy Batsons passions are largely similar to the sorts of things that average teenagers love, like eating junk food and occasionally skipping school.

One other thing thats a big part of Shazam! is video games. We see our main characters playing against each other at one point, but thats far from the only time that video game references are made in Shazam! Here are five surprising references to video games found in the new DC superhero movie.

Mortal KombatAs mentioned, there is one very clear video game reference in Shazam! As we see the adult superhero and his friend/brother Freddy playing the classic fighter Mortal Kombat, apparently using money they swiped from ATMs, based on all the new stuff we see surrounding them. Specifically, the two are playing the recent Mortal Kombat X and Shazam is playing as Raiden, the god of thunder. It's a fitting choice considering both Raiden and Shazam can shoot lightning from their hands.

However, thats not the only reference to Mortal Kombat in Shazam! Another reference comes later, when the superhero version of foster brother Eugene, uses a classic Mortal Kombat line. The game series is best known for its collection of brutal and violent finishing movies, where characters can eviscerate their opponents in various ways. Its called the Fatality, and Eugene uses the classic phrase after Shazam has taken Silvanas eye and defeated him for good.

Street FighterMortal Kombat is one of the best known tournament fighter games ever made, but one title that might be even more well known is the Street Fighter series. The title predates Mortal Kombat by a few years and has had several more games to its name.

Again, the reference here comes from Eugene at the end of the film. His adult superhero version has the lightning power of Zeus that he gained from Shazam. At one point, upon firing his lightning at one of the Seven Deadly Sins, he shouts Hadouken, a reference to the call of Street Fighter members Ryu and Ken, who use the word when sending a fireball toward an opponent.

Watch DogsWhile Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are two game series that many people are familiar with, even if theyve never touched a video game console, the rest of the references begin to get a bit more obscure. While those familiar with AAA console games will know the name Watch Dogs, others may not. The game is an open world action game in the vein of Grand Theft Auto but with the twist that the player has the ability to hack computer systems in order to manipulate the environment.

Eugene makes reference to the game as one of the reasons he has picked up some skills as a hacker. Im not entirely clear how, since all hacking in Watch Dogs is done by pressing a single button. There really isnt much opportunity to learn actual hacking.

UplinkAlongside Watch Dogs, however, is a reference to another hacking-themed video game, and one that might be slightly more useful to learning hacking. Uplink is another game that Eugene apparently plays, or did play, quite a bit. Its actually sort of impressive since the game was originally released back in 2001, making the title older than Eugene is. Its possible Eugene played the mobile version that was released in 2012. Still, its nice to know the kid likes to play older video games too.

Uplink doesnt have you control an avatar of any kind, but instead is a game that looks like youre using an actual PC interface. The hacking works more like the way that you see hacking portrayed in movies, as opposed to actual hacking, but since Shazam! is a movie after all, it seems likely that Uplink is a realistic version of hacking for that world.

PlayStation MoveThe most utterly bizarre video game reference is the unlikeliest one in the movie to notice. Rather than being referenced in dialogue or shown clearly on screen, one scene shows one of the supporting characters armed with a Sony Sharpshooter, a gun peripheral that was designed to be used with the PlayStation 3s Move motion control.

Back when the Nintendo Wii was the biggest thing to hit video games since, well, the original Nintendo Entertainment System, Sony tried to come up with its own version of the tech. The Sharpshooter was essentially a plastic shell for the system that turned the standard Move controller into a light gun. The thing is, the Move was never a major hit, and the Sharpshooter was an additional peripheral, making it even less popular. Where somebody found one of these, and why they thought using it was a good idea, is anybodys guess.

Fortnite? This last one Im not sure is specifically meant to be a video game reference, but its too close to one not to mention. During the Shazam super power testing montage, we see the superhero doing a little dance while hes waiting for Freddy to get ready to film him.

The dance hes doing is called the Floss, and, while it wasnt created for a video game, its popularity as a dance move has become immensely more popular thanks to being an available emote option in Fortnite, the most popular game in the world right now. The dance and the game have become so popular together that they're currently the subject of one of several lawsuits against the game.

From the obvious to the obscure, there are some really fun video game references in Shazam! With all indications being that we're going to get a sequel to Shazam! sooner rather than later, video games will probably continue to be a touchstone of this franchise, and we can look forward to more references in the future. Shazam has made appearances in real life video games before. One has to wonder if Shazam could actually become a video game character within the DC film universe, allowing Billy Batson and Freddy to actually play as their superhero counterparts in some future movie.

First Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Image Shows The Creature Using His Atomic Breath

First Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Image Shows The Creature Using His Atomic Breath

2014's Godzilla didn't give us as much of the famous monster as many would have liked, but the first picture of the upcoming sequel is hopefully evidence we've got some pretty solid monster action on the way. The first official image of Godzilla: King of the Monsters has been revealed and it's exactly the sort of thing monster movie fans will want to see, Godzilla showing off his power with a massive blast of his atomic breath. Check it out.

The image shows Godzilla firing his atomic breath up into the sky. It's a great way to start talking about the new film, as the use of Godzilla's atomic breath, right down the throat of another monster, was far and away the best part of the last movie. It appears to be indiscriminate, we don't see what he' shooting at, but he's almost certainly shooting at something. We know that both Mothra and Rodan, other monsters capable of flight, will be in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, so it's possible that he is fighting one of them off in this shot.

Alternatively, he could also be attacking people, like a plane flying overhead. Entertainment Weekly reveals that a large part of Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be focused on how humanity is reacting to the discovery that Godzilla exists. While the film is set five years after 2014's Godzilla, and the monster hasn't been seen since then, people are still in a complete panic over Godzilla. According to director Michael Dougherty...

The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting, but there's paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we're threatened by others like his kind.

If humanity is overreacting to the existence of Godzilla, then you can be sure when the creature does rear its head once more, people are going to respond. Has civilization spent the last five years building weapons that will hopefully be able to take the monster down? Perhaps that is what Godzilla is fighting against here.

Godzilla__: King of the Monsters is the third film in the "Monsterverse" which, in addition to the previous Godzilla, includes Kong: Skull Island. That film gave us a post-credits sequence that confirmed the existence of other monsters, many of which we will apparently see in King of the Monsters. We also know that eventually, all of this will lead to a showdown between the two most famous giant monsters in movie history.

While this single image isn't much, it's likely to get Godzilla fans excited for what is to come. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will arrive in theaters May 31, 2019.

EW debuted the first two images from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The first image stars the film's giant monster as he lights up the sky with his atomic breath. Dougherty teases this comes at a key point in the film that is "sort of call to arms." The second image shows the human leads of the movie, Brown and Farmiga, together.

How Natalie Portman And Raffey Cassidy Approached Playing The Same Character In Vox Lux

How Natalie Portman And Raffey Cassidy Approached Playing The Same Character In Vox Lux

When two actors are playing the same character at different ages in a movie, you'd think that there would be a lot of communication between them. After all, the idea of digging into a character's mind and backstory with a colleague trying to find the exact same mindset sounds like it would be an appreciated opportunity for any performer. This, however, wasn't the approach taken by Natalie Portman and Raffey Cassidy in the making of the new movie Vox Lux, as they actually purposefully kept their notions of their shared identity to themselves. Or as Portman puts it,

[Writer/director Brady Corbet] really wanted to make it like two different people so you could see this transformation, this kind of radical transformation from the girl you see at the beginning and the woman you see in the second part. So it was really just a wild ride.

The shared character in Vox Lux is Celeste, a young woman who, after experiencing a traumatic event as a teenager, finds herself propelled to stardom as a singer. Raffey Cassidy plays the character in the section of the film that begins in 1999 as her career is just getting started. Natalie Portman's Celeste, meanwhile, is the biggest star in the world in 2017 and getting prepared to launch a massive concert when news breaks of another violent event in which her work is directly referenced.

I had the chance to sit down with Natalie Portman and Raffey Cassidy to talk about their work together earlier this week, and my first question was in regards to how they communicated about their shared role. They explained that the idea at the center of the story in Vox Lux is that Celeste grew up to be a completely different person than she was when she was younger, which meant that their performances would be aided by a lack of Celeste talk (though they do get to actually work together in the film, as Cassidy also plays Celeste's daughter, Albertine).

While both roles have the name Celeste, they are meant to be seen, as Raffey Cassidy puts it, as "two completely different characters."

Following up, I asked the two actors individually how they saw Celeste and what they centered on in their performance. For Cassidy there was a greater focus on the traumatic event (something I'm withholding for spoiler reasons), particularly because it was fresher in the character's mind as she's making strides in her career. She explained,

For my character, because her first scene is the incident I think it was kind of just figuring out how she was going to deal with that trauma, and how that played a part in her life. It affected her whole family, but at the same time she was also discovered at the church service because of this accident. I think it was more discovering how she was dealing with what happened and to show that she was pushing it out of the way. So then we see later on in her life that it's not worked, she didn't do the right thing.

By "didn't do the right thing," Cassidy means that Celeste really becomes a mess. There's not only the classic rock and roll trio of drugs, sex, and alcohol, but her brain is really all over the place. This was something that Natalie Portman honed in on in her response, particular the way in which Celeste interacts with different people.

I think that for the later Celeste we really wanted to just have her be someone who kind of will say anything, and some of it is nonsense and some of it has real insight, and it kind of all gets mixed up, the garbage and the gold of what she says. And just have these very specific relationships, so that it's very different how she is with her sister, than how she is with her manager, then how she is with her daughter, or how she is with a journalist. You can kind of see all these different ways she behaves in different scenarios.

You can watch the stars of Vox Lux discuss their very divergent approaches to their shared character by clicking play on the video below!

In addition to Natalie Portman and Raffey Cassidy, Vox Lux co-stars Stacy Martin and Jude Law, and features music by Sia. It's out in limited release this weekend, and stay tuned here on CinemaBlend in the next few days for more from my interview -- which dives a bit into spoiler territory!
