Black Panther's Screenwriter Doesn't Think Iron Man Would Work Today

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come a long way in 10 years. In fact, it's come so far that the co-writer of Black Panther, the most recent MCU entry, isn't sure the first MCU movie would work as well if it came out today. The issue, according to him, is that Tony Stark, as he appears in the original Iron Man, may not be the sort of person that would be looked at as a hero today. According to Joe Robert Cole...

Think back to Tony Stark, him being douchey and being okay. If that character, Stark, was created in a movie today, I wonder if the response would be like, 'Oh, it's cool that he's douchey and disrespectful to women... That's fine.' I think we're at a different place. I think it's a better place.

The political climate regarding women in media is certainly in a very different place than it was even a few years ago. Joe Robert Cole told a SXSW crowd (via Indiewire) that he doesn't think a character that treated women the way Tony Stark did in the first Iron Man would be as warmly embraced today as he was back then.

It's certainly true that Tony Stark, when we first meet him, wasn't the nicest guy in the world. An early, somewhat belligerent, interaction with a female reporter in Iron Man ends up with the pair spending the night together. It's likely that sort of scene which Joe Robert Cole is referring to. Although, it should be pointed out that following Tony Stark's imprisonment he has a significant change of heart. The purpose of seeing Tony Stark being "douchey" to use Cole's word, is to watch him change over the course of the film. And from there, Tony Stark has changed even more. He certainly isn't the same character today that he was at the beginning of the first Iron Man. When last we saw Tony Stark, in Spider-Man: Homecoming, he was acting as a mentor to a young Peter Parker, something we probably wouldn't have seen from the character at the beginning.

Regardless of what could be or might have been, Joe Robert Cole is clearly happier with the state of movies today. He doesn't think audiences would be so quick to accept early Tony Stark the way he sees the character, and he thinks that is for the best.

Art is a reflection of the culture in which it exists, and thus movies will always change over time. A lot has clearly changed in the MCU over the last 10 years and if the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still going 10 years from now, you can bet that a lot more will have changed by then. We'll see what Tony Stark is like today when Avengers: Infinity War arrives next month.

Star Wars Hayden Christensen Addresses Kelly Marie Trans Online Harassment

Kelly Marie Tran recently spoke publicly about the online harassment that eventually drove her off of social media, now a fellow Star Wars alum has some advice. Hayden Christensen knows a little bit about dealing with the ire of Star Wars fans, and when recently asked about what Tran was going through, he tried to remind her that the ones making the loudest noise are a minority of the people out there. According to Christensen...

I don't know if I have any advice for that, but just...you know, don't take it too seriously, because...unfortunately, [bullies] are the ones that make the most noise. But the majority of people don't feel that way, so, keep that in mind.

Hayden Christensen clearly feels a bit awkward answering the question from ET Canada, because it's always difficult to talk about how somebody else should handle a particular situation, but he tries to offer something that clearly is part of what he learned from a similar experience. Several months ago Kelly Marie Tran disappeared from social media and last week she published an op-ed in the New York Times in which she confirmed the reason for her departure was the harassment she had received online from people critical of her character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

While social media didn't exist in the same form two decades ago that it does now, it's a safe bet that, if it had, Hayden Christensen would have received similar treatment. He almost certainly did receive some bullying from those who had problems with the Star Wars prequels. It seems no corner of those movies was safe from some. Ahmed Best who played Jar Jar Binks recently revealed that he considered suicide as a result of the harassment he endured being in those films. Jake Lloyd who played the younger version Anakin Skywalker also was the victim of harassment.

While those with a bone to pick can certainly be loud, Hayden Christensen doesn't feel they represent the majority opinion and remembering that is his advice to Kelly Marie Tran. There's certainly some truth to that as the outpouring of support for Tran both after she left social media and since she made her public statement has been strong. Most notably, her Star Wars co-stars have backed her up, as have countless fans.

One of the great benefits of social media is the way that it can connect people, including connecting actors with their fans. It's a shame when the voices of some force people to have to step away from that connection for their own health. We will certainly see Kelly Marie Tran again in the forthcoming Star Wars Episode IX regardless of what the bullies think. What the future holds for Hayden Christensen in the Star Wars universe, if anything, remains to be seen.

Anthony Mackie Hasnt Seen Spider-Man: Homecoming And Tom Holland Isnt Having It

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is like a big onscreen superhero family that just keeps on growing with each film. As is the case in many families, some of the younger, newer members get picked on and teased by their older (and in this case, more tenured) co-stars. This is especially true for Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, who, as the MCU's youngest hero, has to deal with some older brother-type teasing from his fellow heroes, especially Falcon actor Anthony Mackie. But every once in a while, the little brother fights back. So when Anthony Mackie recently revealed that he still hasn't seen Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland was ready with a zinger in return. Anthony Mackie is hilarious here at ACE Comic Con (via dea on Twitter), dunking on Tom Holland by brushing off Spider-Man: Homecoming with an air of 'pssh, why would I see that?' and throwing major shade at the hero's lauded MCU return. Little did Anthony Mackie know that Tom Holland had one in the chamber. You can see the wheels turning in Tom Holland's head in the video, as he too was either formulating his comeback or was trying to decide whether or not to say it. After all, not thinking before he speaks in the past has been a foe equal to the Sinister Six for the young actor. Thankfully, proving he really is Spider-Man, Tom Holland lets loose with a quip remarking on the non-existent Falcon movie, like saying 'at least I have a movie to ignore.'

Anthony Mackie has said he doesn't need a solo movie in the past, but this retort is still a stinger. Spidey may not be the most powerful or most seasoned hero in the MCU, but he always punches above his weight. Spider-Man is still relatively new to the MCU, so Tom Holland hasn't acted opposite a lot of the other heroes for lengthy amounts of time. He has mainly interacted with Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark. But given the fun, brotherly dynamic between Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie, I would be all in for Falcon making an appearance in the next Spider-Man movie, like he did in the first Ant-Man. These two didn't interact in Avengers: Infinity War, as Spidey was on the Titan team and Falcon was on the Wakanda team, but maybe they'll get a chance to team-up and rib each other in the future.

We now know a little bit more about what the future for Tom Holland's Spider-Man will entail too. Notorious blabbermouth Tom Holland revealed the title of the next Spider-Man movie this past weekend to be Spider-Man: Far From Home. Kevin Feige has said this title has multiple meanings, so let the speculation begin. We also know that Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play the villain Mysterio in the film. Much of Phase 4 remains a mystery, but as the first film out of the gate post-Avengers 4, we are slowly gaining more clarity about Peter Parker's sophomore solo adventure in the MCU.
