Dark Phoenix Director Explains What Jean Greys Cracked Face Means

X-Men and movie fans were treated to the first trailer for Dark Phoenix this week, which features Jean Grey slowly succumbing to the great power inside of her. The final shot of the trailer featured Jean with glowing eyes and a cracked face, seemingly implying that she was losing her battle of wills. According to director Simon Kinberg, this look is meant to signify the first phase of Jean's transformation into the Phoenix and how her control over herself is literally cracking. He said in a recent interview:

That's not maximum [Phoenix]. That's a two or a three on the Dark Phoenix spectrum. It is a manifestation of her transformation from the Jean we know into Phoenix. Over the span of the movie, we see different symptoms or iterations of that. The lines on her face let you know that Jean is losing control, and that force inside her is trying to escape, push through, take over. Those cracks are almost as if something inside her that's more powerful than she is trying to push out of her body.

Jean Grey's transformation into the Phoenix will have more than one phase, at least, according to director Simon Kinberg. The writer-director broke down the first trailer of Dark Phoenix for Empire, shedding a little light onto what Jean will be going through in the superhero movie. The cracking face is symbolic of the fact that Jean Grey is losing control of the power inside of her and it is quite literally pushing to get outside of her. Over the course of the movie, Jean will continue to grow in strength, and it will have a physical effect over her body.

The cracking face is only the first stop of Jean's transformation as the Phoenix Force (the cosmic entity that takes control of her in the comics) fights for dominance. Jean will only grow more powerful as the movie progresses, but it's unknown what her final look in the movie will be. I imagine that it will involve lots of fire in the shape of a bird.

Taking place nine years after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix finds the X-Men having to battle one of their own as an incident in space causes Jean Grey to slowly succumb to the unstoppable power inside of her. Can the X-Men find a way to reach Jean or will they have to take more drastic measures to end her growing threat? The film stars Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and Jessica Chastain as an unknown extraterrestrial entity.

Why Westworlds Evan Rachel Wood Turned Down A Role In Mean Girls

Just because a comedy is received well critically and commercially during its initial release doesn't necessarily mean it will remain popular as the years pass. Mean Girls, though, needn't worry about that, because 14 years after the Lindsay Lohan-led teen comedy dropped in theaters, it continues to be quoted and remembered fondly by many, to the point that it even has its own day. That said, had things gone differently, we could have seen Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood as one of the Mean Girls leads, and the only reason she turned down the movie was because it was too similar to another project she had lined up. When asked if it was true that she auditioned for Mean Girls, Wood responded:

It's even worse, I turned it down. There's a good reason. The only reason was because I was already supposed to do a film called Pretty Persuasion that was set in a high school, that was very Heathers-esque and it was very similar. I was already doing that, so I was like 'I can't.'

Evan Rachel Wood set the record straight during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and in hindsight, I would imagine that she's wishes she would have taken the Mean Girls role. While Mean Girls opened wide to the public in 2004, earned many positive reviews and made $129 million off a $17 million budget, Pretty Persuasion, which came out in 2005, opened in select theaters was was met with mostly negative reception. I can understand Wood at the time not wanting to star in two high school-set movies at the time, since there's no way should could have predicted that Mean Girls would be so successful. Alas, things didn't work out that way, but Wood is still interested in working with Tina Fey, who wrote the screenplay, which was based off the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman. Provided that Fey's next project isn't about a "robot uprising," Wood is all in on a collaboration.

While she didn't end up appearing in Mean Girls, Evan Rachel Wood has still built a solid acting resume. In the years after Mean Girls and Pretty Persuasion, she appeared in projects like Running with Scissors, Across the Universe, The Wrestler and True Blood. She can currently be seen playing Dolores Abernathy in HBO's Westworld. As for the Mean Girls, while a direct sequel starring Lindsay Logan, Rachel McAdams and the rest of the main cast never happened, Mean Girls 2 was released on ABC Family in 2011, and it starred an all-new cast with the exception of Tim Meadows, who reprised Principal Ron Duvall. A Mean Girls musical also just opened on Broadway, and a couple years back, a spinoff titled Mean Moms entered development, but as of late 2015, it's been stalled.

James Gunn Has Screened Avengers: Infinity War, Here's What He Thinks

Slowly but surely, we have begun to inch closer and closer to the April 27 release date of Avengers: Infinity War. It's an event one decade in the making, and many fans are dying to see what the Russo brothers have cooked up. That said, some members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe family have had a chance to see the film, such as Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. In fact, after seeing the movie, Gunn took to social media to sing his praises of it. The director wrote:

Reviews don't get much more glowing than that. James Gunn obviously cannot say much about Avengers: Infinity War from a plot or character perspective, but he can definitely give his opinion of the overall movie. Based on that short review, it looks like we can look forward to an "incredible" superhero epic that will live up to our current expectations. Now, it might be time to adjust those expectations for something even greater.

James Gunn's short and sweet social media review of Avengers: Infinity War is one of many different stories that have helped me to get excited about what the film has in store. Most of the folks at Marvel have remained relatively tight-lipped about what to expect from the film, but there have been a few tidbits of information here and there that promise something genuinely unique. Not only have actors like Robert Downey Jr. promised a movie that will break our hearts with the deaths that we will see, but screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus also hyped the film as a behemoth blockbuster potentially worthy of Oscar consideration when CinemaBlend visited the set last year. Put all of that together, and it's clear that Infinity War may offer up a spectacle unlike anything that we have ever seen from this franchise before.

Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of ten years of storytelling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film centers on Thanos (Josh Brolin) as he journeys to Earth with his Black Order to acquire the Infinity Stones and complete the Infinity Gauntlet. As Gamora (Zoe Saldana) explaind in the film's most recent trailer: his ultimate goal is to eliminate half of all life in the universe, which lines up with his mission in the original Infinity Gauntlet storyline in the pages of Marvel Comics. It has been six years since the character turned and smiled at the audience at the end of The Avengers, and James Gunn's exuberant assessment of the final product seems to promise a blockbuster that won't disappoint. Considering his babies -- The Guardians of the Galaxy -- are coming to life under a different set of directors, this seems to be good news.

Audiences will finally get a chance to see if Avengers: Infinity War will live up to that hype when the film debuts in theaters on April 27.
