Bryan Singer Banned Comics From The X-Men Set

Bryan Singer Banned Comics From The X-Men Set

Comic book movies and shared universes may have become commonplace in the past few years, but there was a time when superhero movies arrived in theaters sporadically. 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise started back with the 2000 original, and is still going strong in the almost two decades since. Bryan Singer brought the mutants to theaters for the first time, although it appears he had a surprising rule on set: no comic books.

Hugh Jackman has recently hung up his claws for good, after playing Wolverine in a ton of main installments and three spinoffs. The Oscar winning actor recently revealed what it was like in the early days, and why director Bryan Singer banned comics from the set, saying:

Bryan Singer had this thing that people would think he really wanted to take comic book characters seriously, as real three-dimensional characters, that people who don't understand these comics might think they're two-dimensional, so no one was allowed [comics]. ... It was contraband. I'd never read X-Men, so people were slipping them under my door.

Well, that sounds intense. While comic book fans now expect each actor to be come experts on their characters' lore, it seems that Bryan Singer had a different idea when filming the first X-Men movie. Because in order to make the mutant cast realistic, he barred Marvel's pages from being referenced during filming.

Hugh Jackman's comments to MTV are sure to confuse comic book fans, who take the research involved in superhero adaptations very seriously. With so many comic book properties currently in theaters, actors are expected to become very familiar with their character's history on the page. This can be seen in the research done by Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson, or Logan director James Mangold being inspired by Watchmen. Yet Bryan Singer had a different idea.

Of course, Bryan Singer had no way of predicting the success of X-Men, or that it was the first in a long line of big screen adventures. If the director/producer knew he was crafting the beginnings of a shared universe, perhaps his feelings about comic books on set would have been different. Still, he was determined to create a realistic version of the mutant team, which can be seen in their appearance alone.

Rather than colorful costumes and over the top powers, X-Men outfitted its team with matching black leather uniforms. Their abilities are also pulled back a bit, with characters like Rogue, Storm, and Jean all less powerful than their comic book versions. And Bryan Singer's vision seems to have paid off, as new installments in the franchise are on the way with Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants.

The X-Men franchise continues, without Hugh Jackman, when Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters June 7th, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Director Bryan Singer didn't allow comic books to be brought onto the set of the 2000 X-Men film.. Speaking with MTV News to promote his new film The Front Runner, Hugh Jackman discussed auditioning for the role of Wolverine, and meeting Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who was an associate producer on X-Men.

Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Production Designer Really Doesn't Want To F-Up The Monsters

Although it is perhaps for the best, there are sadly no real titans that can be trained to battle for our cinematic enjoyment. That means that a whole lot of people need to put in a lot of work to bring these kaiju to life on the big screen for a movie like Godzilla: King of the Monsters. One of those people is production designer Scott Chambliss, who spoke about his role on the film and the guiding principle to not screw things up, saying:

Its one of the interesting things for me in my career. Its, of course, creating the environments for the story of the movie, but also I was hired to be the ringleader of the design team that we brought on to collaborate on the updating of the monsters themselves and, to me, is very exciting ... As part of a design team, none of us wanna fuck it up.

Not wanting to fuck it up is probably a pretty good objective to have in any creative endeavor, but especially one like Godzilla: King of the Monsters, where the potential to do just that is so high. Scott Chambliss wasnt just in charge of creating the world of the film as production designer, he also had the responsibility of shepherding the design team through the process of updating the look of the monsters.

As Scott Chambliss told Forbes, updating and designing these awesome monsters that are what people pay to see was really exciting-- but it also carries with it a huge degree of responsibility. Neither he nor the rest of the design team wanted to fuck it up and that is not as easy as it sounds, as he explained:

The challenge of trying to remain true at our core to the designs of these original monsters that people really hold dear in their hearts, but also bringing them up to date in a way that honors their past, but feels much more contemporary, not only technologically, but in terms of how monsters function in movies as characters. We focused a lot of design attention on what the environment in terms of how all the monsters are affecting it, whether theyre directly or indirectly affecting it and what, visually, their place is in [the] world and what sort of natural elements they represent.

Its one thing to design a new character, but another entirely to depict an iconic one that audiences have known for decades in a new way. Thats why things like the casting for the next James Bond or the design of superhero costumes are subject to such scrutiny. People have very high and specific expectations that must be met and that holds true for the monsters of Godzilla 2, some of which have existed since the 1950s.

The creatures in Godzilla: King of the Monsters couldnt look totally different than their previous iterations, because fans of the property already have basic ideas in their heads of what Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah look like. So Ghidorah cant have 1 head or 8 and Mothra cant have bat wings. They need to stay true to the things that made them iconic in the first place.

But these giant monsters had to be designed to fit within the world and aesthetic of the current iteration of the franchise and also be updated to appeal to modern sensibilities. Scott Chambliss previously spoke to CinemaBlend about this topic and how difficult it was to design Mothra for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. They wanted to make her truly feminine and graceful, but also frightening and powerful and it is quite a challenge to find the design that fits that balance.

Therefore it wasnt as simple as a technological facelift using current CGI technology. For Scott Chambliss, that was the needle that had to be thread with the monster designs for Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

I also found it interesting that he wanted look at the monsters as characters and having visual representation of how they interact with their environment and what elements they represent. In the trailers, Mothra has this ethereal glow to her and King Ghidorah has this charged electricity around him, so perhaps those traits are a reflection of those efforts.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is tracking to make between $40 million and $60 million opening weekend and if the early reactions to the film are any indication, they didnt fuck it up. Godzilla: King of the Monsters opens in theaters on May 31. Check out our 2019 Release Schedule for all of this summers biggest movies.

Johnny Depp Responds To Crew Members On Set Assault Charge

Johnny Depp Responds To Crew Members On Set Assault Charge

Over the past year or so, the overall climate in the entertainment world has changed. Following the shocking accusations of assault against producer Harvey Weinstein, new emphasis has been placed on how creatives live their lives off camera. Johnny Depp has been at the center of plenty of controversies, most noticeably regarding his split from Amber Heard, and the videos she released of Depp in a state of rage. The actor's most recent controversy comes from the set of his upcoming drama City of Lies, where he reportedly got into a physical altercation with the film's location manager. The crew member, Gregg "Rocky" Brooks, is suing Depp for reportedly punching him on set, and now the actor has fired back with his side of the story. Per Depp's most recent response, Brooks made the actor feel unsafe, possibly giving a reason why things got physical.

This latest update comes from Johnny Depp's legal team, and doesn't actually admit the actor punched Greg Brooks on the set of City of Lies. Instead, it focuses on the behavior of the crew member, alleging Brooks' injuries were acquired due to his own actions. No concrete details about Depp's version of the events were included in the recent paper work (via The Wrap), although it's clear that the Crimes of Gindelwald actor is attempting to distance himself from the physical confrontation.

Johnny Depp's legal response to Gregg Brooks comes after the location manager filed a suit against Depp in July. According to Brooks, Depp became angry and reportedly violent when plans for shooting City of Lies changed last minute, reportedly cursing and screaming at him. Depp then allegedly "angrily and forcefully punched Plaintiff twice in the lower left side of his rib cage and causing pain." The actor has now essentially refuted this account, so it's unclear how potential litigation will affect the complicated situation.

The controversy surrounding Johnny Depp from the set of City of Lies has essentially halted the film's trajectory, and it's unclear if it will ever actually make it to theaters. After its first schedule change, City of Lies was set to arrive on September 7th. But Global Road Entertainment put the flick on hold indefinitely, while the lawsuit and controversy surrounding the project are resolved. If they can be resolved.

City of Lies released its first trailer just a month before things were put on pause, and features Johnny Depp alongside Forest Whitaker. The upcoming movie is based on the real-life police investigation of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur's murders, a case which lasted decades and began in the 90s. Depp is playing Russell Poole, the LAPD detective who dug into the events of the violence, which ultimately took two music legends.

Unfortunately, it's unclear if/when City of Lies will hit theaters. But rest assured that CinemaBlend will keep you updated on the proceedings. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
