Should Fox Shelve The X-Men And New Mutants Movies?

After a six month battle between corporate giants, shareholders for both Disney and 21 Century Fox have approved the $71.3 billion purchase plan that gives Disney the bulk of Fox's media empire. While there are still regulatory hurdles that prevent this from being a done deal, it's a major step forward for Disney and even though the ramifications of such a deal on the entertainment industry are wide and uncertain, some fans are just happy that the X-Men will eventually be returning to Marvel Studios. Of course, this begs the question of what this means for Fox's current slate of X-Men films, which have suffered some setbacks over the last few months and it has made some wonder whether the movies should be scrapped altogether.

While there's still the Deadpool franchise and the in-development X-Force, Fox has X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants up to bat. Both are big X-Men movies and both have seen big delays. X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the next (and possibly final) chapter in the main X-Men saga was originally set for a November 2, 2018 release date. The film has since been pushed back to February 14, 2019, due to reshoots that were complicated because of busy actor schedules (according to reports). New Mutants was a bit less smooth than that. The movie was delayed for over a year to August 2, 2019, in order to add whole entire scenes to make the movie more frightening.

However, it's easy for the cynical of us to think that these delays were in some way influenced by the Disney-Fox deal. Pretty much everything Fox has got going on at the moment is up in the air, but the studio obviously has to keep operating until told otherwise. That's a practical business decision but does it make sense to keep moving forward with the X-Men when their ultimate destination in the MCU renders any more movies somewhat fruitless.

Well, let's think about that particular point: does it even matter? I would say that even if the X-Men are MCU-bound, it does not mean that they shouldn't finish out whatever they've got left. There are still fans of this franchise, and it makes sense to give them an actual conclusion -- which is maybe what these reshoots are doing. It's a real bummer note to just end everything after X-Men: Apocalypse, one of the weakest entries in the entire series. Just because these characters might not be sticking around doesn't make their last movie a waste of time. That only happens if the movie is bad.

Plus, what if this turns out to be a really good X-Men movie? What if it's the best in the whole franchise? To not show that movie would only be depriving audiences of a good time at the theater, not to mention all the cast and crew who worked for months to complete it.

On the other hand, not many people were foaming at the mouth to see another adaption of the classic Dark Phoenix storyline. X-Men: The Last Stand notably dropped that ball several years ago and while there's that "now they can get it right" mentality, it's still a story that we've already seen play out in some form. That doesn't mean the whole movie should get thrown away, but anticipation is still muted.

There's an argument to be made that Marvel will want to start fresh with a brand-new set of X-Men if they make the jump to the MCU, but there's no guarantee that would be the case. Marvel could opt to keep the current X-Men cast around and just have them literally cross over from their cinematic universe. If that happens, then Dark Phoenix becomes a pivotal movie that can't be skipped.

In the case of New Mutants, that movie is comparatively much smaller than Dark Phoenix. It's also continuing the trend of stand-alone movies that push boundaries that began with Deadpool. Logan and Deadpool were two of the most interesting superhero films released by the studio, and they both went on to do well with critics and the box office. Fox is on a roll in this department, so of course, we want to see what they do with New Mutants! It's a straight-up superhero horror movie and it deserves to be shown, not collecting dust in a closet. However, New Mutants stand-alone status does make it expendable in the grand scheme of things.

We also need to look at this from a business perspective. It makes no sense why Fox would pull either Dark Phoenix or New Mutants, movies they have spent millions of dollars to make. Movies have gotten buried by studios before, but they typically aren't superhero blockbusters. However, Disney probably doesn't care how much money Fox spent. and if the deal is finalized before Dark Phoenix releases in theaters, then maybe Disney could cut the film to protect creative continuity and say "no skin of my back." There's also the question that if Fox is largely no more when Dark Phoenix releases, who gets the profits from the movie? If the answer is Disney, then they do have an incentive to get Dark Phoenix out there.

Ultimately, even if we do end up with a new team of X-Men in the MCU, I think that Fox should release Dark Phoenix and New Mutants. The Disney deal complicates matters, but if they are able to do so, they should let these characters go out with one last hurrah before the Marvel machine grinds itself a brand-new set of mutants.

How The Venom Movie May Use Carnage

After failing to impress in Spider-Man 3 more than a decade ago, Venom is getting a second shot at silver screen glory through his standalone movie that arrives later this year. Even with the teaser trailer dropping yesterday, many plot details about the Venom movie are still being officially kept under wraps, but last year, it was reported that Venom would clash with Carnage, another famous symbiote-powered Spider-Man villain, in this movie. However, now a new report claims that rather than being Venom's main antagonist, Carnage will instead be teased as a threat for a sequel.

It was confirmed with our first look at Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock that the Life Foundation will play a role in Venom, and like its comic book counterpart, the organization will reportedly be responsible for the creation of other symbioses (in the comics, they were named Scream, Riot, Agony, Lasher and Phage). That being said, That Hashtag Show has heard that one of the scenes recently shot for Venom takes place near the end of the movie, possibly being a post-credits sequence, and shows Eddie at San Quentin State Prison, which is north of San Francisco, the movie's main setting. While there, Eddie meets Cletus Kasady, a serial killer who is under the care of Dr. Ashley Kafka. The doctor warns Eddie to keep his distance from Cletus, but apparently part of the Venom symbiote starts making its way towards Cletus during this encounter, and then the scene cuts to black.

In case you're not familiar with Carnage's comic book history, Cletus Kasady was already a psychopathic serial killer long before he shared a prison cell with Eddie Brock, but when the Venom symbiote broke into Ryker's to bond with Eddie again and help him escape, it left behind an offspring. It was this baby symbiote that bonded with Kasady, turning him into Carnage. While Venom is one of Spider-Man's greatest enemies, he at least lives by a code, but Carnage relishes chaos and slaughtering innocents, making him significantly more dangerous. Carnage is one of the many Spider-Man villains who hasn't been adapted for film yet, but rather than pit him against Tom Holland's iteration of the Web-Slinger, it appears that Carnage is being saved as solely a Venom opponent for the theatrical realm, which is fitting given how much the two hate each other in the source material.

It's way too early to say if Venom 2 will happen, but if the first movie performs well critically and commercially, it's likely that Sony will want to keep the Venom train going. This scene, assuming it's legitimate, would be a cool way to foreshadow Cletus Kasady's transformation into Carnage, and after years of comic book, TV and video game appearances, it's about time this character get some attention in a movie or two. As for who would play Cletus, that's hard to say, though THS did point out that Woody Harrelson, who joined the Venom cast towards the end of last year, hasn't been seen in any set photos. Is it possible that Harrleson only briefly came in to shoot his Venom scenes(s), and that he's being saved to be the main villain in Venom 2? Perhaps, but for right now, that's simply a guess.

This is in part due to Carnage being gestated on the alien atmosphere of Earth, but he's also picked up an extra trick or two since his debut. What Bad Boys 3 May Be About

At times it seems like the much talked about third Bad Boys film may never happen. It's been perpetually delayed, but now it appears that the movie may actually film this year, and we may also know what it will be about. While fans of the previous films may be excited about the possibility of seeing Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as partners once again, they may have to wait, as the new film will reportedly start with the pair no longer working together.

The plot synopsis sees Martin Lawrence's Marcus Burnett working as a private investigator after having a falling out with Will Smith's Mike Lowery. Lowery, for his part, is going through something of a midlife crisis as he finds himself still single but now looking to mature. Lowery has a new young partner that he's dealing with, though indications are he doesn't care much for the new kid. However, when an Albanian mercenary puts a hit out on the Bad Boys, for the death of his brother, the pair are reunited and instantly fall back into their old groove. We can expect that groove will include gunfights, car chases, and explosions.

The plot summary that comes from That Hashtag Show certainly sounds like something we could see out of the new movie, officially titled Bad Boys for Life. That title now sounds like it's meant to be a reaffirmation based on this story, an answer to the question posed by the story. The most interesting question about this plot, if it proves to be accurate, may be just how long the pair have been estranged. It's been 15 years since Bad Boys II, so it's possible the partners have been on the outs for over a decade. It would certainly be interesting to see the characters reconnecting after an absence as long as the one that fans have had to endure.

A third Bay Boys has been in discussion seemingly since the second film came out but the project has been delayed numerous times, even seeing official release dates get pushed back over and over again. Currently, the movie isn't actually on Sony's official release calendar, so it's anybody's guess when it could actually see the light of day. Even Martin Lawrence, who had been one of the strongest voices in favor of the sequel, said as recently as last year that he didn't actually think the third movie was ever going to happen.

However, most recently, new directors were found for the project in the form of Adil El Arbi and Bilal Fallah, and that seems to have given the project life once again. If a late summer shooting schedule is planned, which has been intimated of late, then we could actually see Bad Boys for Life as soon as next year.

6 Criticisms People Have Of Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame is killing it at the box office, and it's looking more and more likely it will become the highest-grossing film of all time. There are plenty of viewers who think the film is the ultimate swan song to the first 10 years of the MCU, with plenty of exciting and heart-wrenching moments for audiences to chew on. Those voices have expressed themselves well enough over the internet so far, but what about those who were disappointed by certain aspects?

These voices are quieter, and possibly keeping their opinions to themselves as opposed to the internet, particularly given the recent spoilers climate. Now that the Russos have given the OK on spoiling Avengers: Endgame, we're happy to talk out more specifically what we've seen and heard from fans as them feel more emboldened to share the issues they had with the MCU movie. Here are some that are out there already. Avengers lovers, assemble your counterpoints.

Avengers: Endgame Is Too LongAudiences surely knew of Avengers: Endgame's roughly three-hour runtime ahead of their viewings, as headlines about not having a chance to pee circulated the web in the days before release. With hype like that, and spoilers on the movie kept largely under lock and key, many may have been glued to their seats denying themselves of snacks, bathroom breaks, or the birth of their children in fear of missing some huge MCU moment, but ended up underwhelmed by how the lengthy movie ran on and on and on.

In the case of one USA Today writer, Avengers: Endgame's runtime may have been justified had some of the plot been committed to re-introducing some characters. Instead, there were deep cuts and cameos by characters even those who had seen a vast majority of MCU movies may have struggled to remember. Other folks may just not have the patience for a three-hour movie, which is likely why studios tend not to make a lot of them.

Avengers: Endgame Has A Lot Of DowntimeSuperhero movies are, typically, big on action. Avengers: Endgame does have one of the largest action sequences in the MCU, but this Avengers entry does have significant chunks of downtime between its fight scenes (the lengthy runtime likely contributes to this as well). The common complaint from a chunk of moviegoers is that things slow down shortly after the opening moments, and go between rising and falling action quite a bit leading up to the final battle.

Part of this may be audiences coming in expecting an experience closer to Avengers: Infinity War, which felt action heavy in comparison. Of course, given where Infinity War ended, we had to pick up at an interesting point in time, which means the first hour of Avengers: Endgame has a lot of downtime. Fans have to catch up with characters in the five years after the time-jump, which would not have the same emotional impact if characters were kicking ass all through those scenes.

Avengers: Endgame Requires A Lot Of Marvel Knowledge To Fully AppreciateWhile the Russos stated that all audiences can enjoy Avengers: Endgame without a vast knowledge of the MCU, that's up to the individual to decide. Someone could see Avengers: Endgame having only seen Infinity War or a handful of other Marvel movies, but there's a good deal of references that will go right over his or her head.

Even those well-versed in the MCU may have missed deep references as the movie even managed to work in scenes from iconic comic book storylines. A great example is Captain America's "Hail Hydra" scene, which is a reference to Captain America: Winter Soldier, but also a polarizing comic storyline in Secret Empire. It's never fun to feel out of the loop in the theater, which may have been why some folks didn't enjoy the flick as much as others.

Avengers: Endgame's Time Travel Is ConfusingThis is, perhaps, the biggest criticisms fans have felt comfortable talking about since Avengers: Endgame's release. Time travel can always create issues in storytelling, especially when the movie outright explains it's not going to follow the rules of traditional time travel established by films of the past. There's even a discrepancy between the Russos and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely on explaining how it works, which should be a sign.

Answers are, presumably, going to come via Disney+'s Marvel shows or in other Phase 4 films, but there's a sense Avengers: Endgame passed the buck onto someone else to explain away some of the decisions the movie made. Granted, a lot of it wouldn't be too difficult to grasp if it wasn't for Captain America's end scene, which kind of puts a lot of theories fans have to that point on their heads. Bottom line, some fans need a real and official explanation to feel satisfied.

Avengers: Endgame Use Of The Hulk Is UnderwhelmingAvengers: Endgame viewers were treated to a wildly different version of the Hulk, who now lived as a superhero with the body of the green gamma radiated giant and the brain of counterpart Bruce Banner. He was, with maybe the exception of Hawkeye, the most transformed of all of the Avengers 5 years after Infinity War. However, with Hawkeye, we witnessed what he lost following the snap, saw the person he became afterward, and then saw how he reclaimed who he was in the process.

With Hulk, we saw the once intimidating and most destructive force in the Avengers dab in front of children. Sure, he did more, but Banner's reconciling with Hulk is a big deal, and some fans feel like it's a shame we didn't see more of him figuring that out. We also really didn't see the two sides as equals, as Banner used very little of that patented "smash" ability. His part was enjoyable, but there wasn't a lot to love for classic Hulk fans.

Avengers: Endgame's Deaths Shouldn't Even MatterAvengers: Endgame features two huge deaths when --and big spoilers here -- we lose Black Widow and Iron Man. Theoretically, the movie lays out how the MCU can bring neither back thanks to the rules of the Soul Stone etc. However, Gamora being snatched up from the past and brought to the present brings an earlier version of her character back into the Guardians franchise, so why wouldn't they do that immediately? I don't think it can be because it would change the past, because Nebula killing her past self seems to have done nothing.

Using Pym Particles and the Quantum Realm, it would theoretically be easy to bring back both Tony and Natasha from a time prior to their death so that the entire squad can be together again. It may not happen to keep the emotion of Avengers: Endgame, but from a plot perspective, this timey-wimey stuff in Endgame's realm still seems shaky from a lot of fan perspectives. Of course, we know Tony won't be coming back because of his Marvel contract, but still.
