One Reason The Fifty Shades Movies Work, According To Dakota Johnson

Although E.L. James' popular book series came first, these days it is difficult to imagine Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey without thinking of Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. However, if the chemistry hadn't been right, perhaps the movies wouldn't have been as popular as they ended up being. In fact, speaking ahead of the Blu-ray release, Fifty Shades Freed lead Dakota Johnson explained why she feels the franchise as a whole has worked, stating that it was her relationship with Dornan that was the bedrock to the series. She said:

If we didn't get along, it would have been so heartbreaking, because the reason why we have a special relationship onscreen is because we have an even more special relationship off. If we couldn't laugh at each other and make fun of each other and trust each other and goof around all the time, then like, it wouldn't have been what it is.

Along with Dakota Johnson's words on the Blu-ray featurette, E.L. James also talks about how well Johnson and Jamie Dornan worked together. Their success onscreen likely contributed to the fandom showing up for not one but three movies. In fact, the Fifty Shades movies have made over a billion dollars worldwide at this point. Not a bad take for a movie based on a best-selling novel. A new movie, Book Club, is even based on the popularity of E.L. James' book.

We'd be remiss if we didn't mention that for years, the rumor mill has been chock full of rumors that Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson really aren't very big fans of one another. The rumors have stemmed from truly random moments, like snapshots of Dakota Johnson looking uncomfortable while standing next to Dornan, to both of the series leads talking about how uncomfortable the sex scenes were to shoot. Regardless, in the latter case, it's definitely been more about the actors talking about having to be in close proximity with one another while wearing things like "wee-bags," so who wouldn't be uncomfortable in that sort of situation?

Obviously, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan aren't a real-life love story. Dornan is married -- and his wife does not see the Fifty Shades movies. Dornan has made reference to Johnson's strings of boyfriends in interviews as well, so it's clear the time they have shared together is not like Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's real-life/ Twilight life romance. Still, they were two strangers who ended up having to share a lot of intimate time together, drinking whiskey and doing push-ups before big nude scenes. If what Dakota Johnson is saying is true, it explains how the two were able to create chemistry without having real chemistry in the movies.

What Billy Batson's Mission In Shazam Is, According To The Director

The DC Universe's film slate has had an interesting go. There have been serious peaks and valleys, as well as new leadership. While most of the universe's future is a complete mystery to the fandom, there are two blockbusters coming down the line. James Wan's Aquaman will arrive in theaters first, but there is a ton of hype revolving around David F. Sandberg's Shazam! The kid-centric superhero movie debuted its first trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, teasing a blockbuster unlike anything we've seen from the genre. Most of Shazam!'s contents have been kept under wraps, but Sandberg recently revealed the title character's mission in the upcoming movie, saying:

He's trying to find his family... His mom is still out there. But once he gets these powers, he's just trying to figure out what to do with them and how it works. For that he needs his friend Freddie, who is like a superhero expert, who helps him to discover his powers and how to be a superhero.

Looks like Billy Batson has a very personal mission to complete in Shazam!, in addition to gaining control of his powers and ability to transform into his muscle-bound and superpowered alter ego. This will help give Shazam! the proper emotional weight, in addition to the hijinks and occasional dabbing that the kid/hero is going to do.

David F. Sandberg's comments to Comic Book are sure to confuse some of the hardcore DC fans out there, who are already familiar with Billy Batson's backstory from the comics. In the source material, Billy is actually an orphan and has lost both of his parents. While many assumed this would translate to Shazam!, it turns out that DC is taking some liberties and crafting a unique story to the original backstory.

Given the revelation about Billy Batson's mother in Shazam!, one had to wonder the circumstances that put him into foster care. Was she unfit? Did she abandon him? It's unclear. But a story about a boy longing for his mother is something most audiences can identify with, even if that boy happens to have a multitude of super powers and can somehow transform himself into a full grown man.

Shazam! will follow the story of Billy Batson, a 14-year old Philadelphian who recently found a new foster home. While riding the subway, Billy is given powers by The Wizard, and his life is changed forever. During his origin story he'll look to his new bestie Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) to guide him through Superhero 101. He'll also come to blows with new villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, although the conflict and fight sequence of the film are still unseen.

Shazam! will arrive in theaters, complete with a new backstory, on April 5, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin is set to follow in the footsteps of the Beauty and the Beast remake and be a full musical like its animated counterpart. However, we won't only get the songs we know. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the songwriters of the recent musical hit The Greatest Showman, recently revealed that they helped write a pair of new songs that will be included in the film when it arrives next year. We're really thrilled that we got to collaborate with one of our heroes, Alan Menken. We collaborated with him and wrote the lyrics for two new songs for Aladdin that's coming out next year. Yeah, just being in the studio with him and getting to suck him dry for all the stories he would tell us and pick his brain about.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul didn't elaborate with Variety on the new songs because the pair were mostly just super excited about the fact that they got to work with the great Alan Menken. Menken wrote the music for most of the Disney animated movies that came out during the Disney Renaissance of the late 80s and 90s including writing all the songs of the original Aladdin with Howard Ashman and Time Rice.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have become something of the Howard Ashman of the current day, as the pair have been involved in writing some of the songs for the two biggest movie musicals in recent years, La La Land and The Greatest Showman. It makes all the sense in the world that if you want new music for your musical, you call these two.

The previous Disney live-action remake to go full musical, Beauty and the Beast, also included a pair of brand new songs. Alan Menken wrote those with frequent collaborator Tim Rice, but this time it looks like Disney is bringing in some new blood. There's plenty of space in the story for new songs, even without making significant changes to the story. There's only one song that follows "A Whole New World" in the animated movie, and it's a reprise of an earlier song, so perhaps Jafar will get a full villain song at some point in the new movie. If there's anything that Aladdin is really missing from a musical standpoint, it's probably that. We could also potentially see a song for one of the movie's new characters. We know that Jafar will have a right-hand man named Hakim, and Jasmine will have a handmaiden/best friend named Mara. Depending on the importance of the roles, we could see songs from one or both of them. The changes to the story that new characters bring could be the reason for new songs.

Of course, there's also the possibility that one of the new songs is replacing one of the old ones. Of course, if that happens, somebody is going to lose their favorite song. We'll find out what the movie sounds like in May of 2019.

12 Great Movies Coming To Netflix In March

March is here, and with promises of spring weather, ever lighter days and Easter eggs around the corner, we get our usual batch of new films and TV shows that are debuting on Netflix's streaming platform. Out of the multitude of choices heading our way in the next calendar month, there's a select handful that really look to brighten our day. If you want to see the best and the brightest of this past month's incoming class, you can find them in our previous rundown. But today we cast our eyes to the future and are taking a look at the best movies coming to Netflix throughout March.

300Back in the days of Zack Snyder's then-up-and-coming career, 300 was handed to him as his first graphic novel adaptation set up at Warner Bros. His second major motion picture, the Frank Miller comic was brought to full color life by Snyder, while introducing us to a lot of the tools and tropes the director would use over his entire career. Enjoy this one as a throwback to a simpler era of standalone comic films, with the shine on Zack Snyder's star still intact.

AdventurelandWhile both Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg are pretty big deals right now, Adventureland is a shared project of theirs that landed at a rather interesting time. It was the dawning of a new age of tentpoles and indies alike, with the MCU just revving up the year before and Miramax on the decline as an indie stalwart. Due to both of those factors, this one seemed to be pigeonholed and overlooked in its initial release. You wouldn't be blamed if you haven't discovered writer/director Greg Mattola's ode to summer jobs and the romance that sometimes blossoms from them, so now's your chance to correct that.

BeerfestWith Super Troopers 2 is finally becoming a reality in just a couple of months, there's a lot of excitement in the air for the return of Broken Lizard to the big screen. Which raises the all-important question, are we finally going to get Weedfest within the near future? Of course, to be asking that question, you need to be familiar with the joy-inducing comedy that the troupe's film Beerfest managed to generate. And what do you know? It's on Netflix for all to enjoy as a sort of pre-game for Super Troopers 2! So if you're holding out hope for another long overdue sequel seeing the light, or if you just like Broken Lizard's damned funny faces, throw in Beerfest one or five times throughout March!

CasinoHere's a fun party game: mention the name Martin Scorsese and see what movies get mentioned first. Almost always, it's going to be Goodfellas, Raging Bull, The Departed and even The Wolf of Wall Street. Yet below the strata of intensely well known Scorsese, there are gems that need some more love from the public - flicks like The King of Comedy, or even Casino. Everyone loves to compare it to Goodfellas, as it's obviously a very mafia-centric story, but that comparison is unfair. While Goodfellas focuses on a guy who always wanted to be a gangster, the Robert De Niro lead in Casino just wants to run a square joint and take care of those that he loves. Though, in true Martin Scorsese form, it's not an easy bet.

Cruel IntentionsOut of all of the '90s nostalgia driven trips we've been subjected to, how has Cruel Intentions not managed to land a solid revival? Sure, there was that TV pilot a couple years back, and a new musical is heading to the stage this year in New York, but surely there would have been a remake/sequel by now, right? Then again, if you revisit this '90s classic for yourself, you'll probably see why it's so damned hard to bring Kathryn, Sebastian and Annette back into the modern day. For as everyone could tell with the two subpar, direct-to-DVD sequels (which have also found a home on Netflix this month), that first movie was truly lighting in a bottle.

Forgetting Sarah MarshallBreak-ups suck, and if Valentine's Day didn't go the way you'd hoped this year, you're probably still sorting through the wreckage. Netflix understands this, and as such, it's bringing Forgetting Sarah Marshall to your weary eyes in the name of laughing at heartache. Allegedly inspired by his failed relationship with a former co-star, this kinda rom/definitely com flick sees writer/star Jason Segel's Peter trying to escape his heartache by vacationing to Hawaii. Unfortunately for him, his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend are both in the same state. We won't spoil how it turns out in case you're new to this one, but we will say that it's well worth watching for the Dracula musical numbers alone.

GhostbustersComedy is a fickle genre, as blazing successes of today don't always age the way they should. Just ask anyone with a copy of Superbad who they haven't even spoken to in a good decade. And yet, the films that stick do so for the best reasons. Ghostbusters, in the wrong hands, might have wound up a relic that people talked about with fondness that was freeze dried from the moment of their first and only viewing as a kid. And yet, it's a fresh and vibrant movie that's definitely a product of its time, but one that doesn't completely anchor itself to its '80s origins. Yes, it's true, this film is immortal.

MoonIf it wasn't for Duncan Jones failing to cast Sam Rockwell in Mute, but really wanting to work with him anyway, Moon would have never happened. And while we've just received that other film in our Netflix queues as of today, it's that first film that still sticks in our minds. Rockwell's performance as Sam Bell, the lone employee of a lunar mining corporation with a big secret, is still a revelation after all this time. While there's a good chance he will win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar this year, we can't help but feel that there should have been more love for his role as Sam back in the day.

The Brothers GrimmTerry Gilliam is the king of underrated successes. Just ask any of his fans. With The Man Who Killed Don Quixote finally being completed, there's no better time to tear through the director's back catalog and pick out some favorites. As such, it's recommended that you check out The Brothers Grimm, a fantasy comedy that operates on such a fantastically efficient level, it feels like a tentpole with weight to it. With Heath Ledger and Matt Damon playing the titular brothers, who turn out to be con artists with fantastic storytelling abilities, seeing this pair fight off more than they can chew is a true delight.

Up In The AirWhile it certainly looked like the "topical choice" for the Academy Awards in its year of nomination, Jason Reitman's Up in the Air actually serves a deeper purpose. The George Clooney/Anna Kendrick road dramedy certainly gives a voice to the woes of the economic recession that hit Americans hard, as it actually cast real people that lost their jobs at the time to play some of the folks being let go by Clooney's corporate soldier. But underneath that plotline are tales of love, ambition and where you're actually going in life versus where you're hoping to land. At times tender, with some gut punches that help highlight its humanity, it's a movie that should be enjoyed on a day where you're really ready to parse it out.

Wet Hot American SummerMuch like film audiences the world over, Netflix is in love with Paul Rudd. With six of his ten best performances (in our opinion) being run in their streaming platform, you could very easily find yourself stuck in a Rut of Rudd. And if you choose to do so, we suggest throwing in Wet Hot American Summer in there somewhere, as it's a fun and jerky balance to some of the sweeter, more stoic work he's done in recent years. That, and it's Wet Hot American Summer. How do you not watch Wet Hot American Summer when it's staring you right in the face?!

Let Me InRemakes get a pretty bad name for the most part, as simply adapting something that's been done before feels like a waste of time, money and attention span. But if you can recapture what makes the original that damned brilliant, while at the same time spinning it in a slightly different way to make it its own thing, then you have a case for just how the concept works on its best day. Let Me In is one of those best days in remake history, as director Matt Reeves takes Let The Right One In and turns it into a film that still strikes the notes Tomas Alfredson's Swedish original did, but in a different and darker chord.
