One Problem Call Me By Your Name's Writer Has With The Movie

One of the most buzzed-about movies heading into this year's Academy Awards was Call Me By Your Name. Luca Guadagnino's film netted four nominations, with one win for James Ivory's script. After a long career as a filmmaker, Ivory won his first Academy Award for the film for Best Adapted Screenplay. With the win he also became the oldest Oscar winner ever at 89. So you would think that Ivory couldn't be happier with how Call Me By Your Name turned out and all its success, but that is not so. He does have one problem with the film: there's no full-frontal male nudity in it. Ivory spoke candidly about his thoughts on the lack of nudity, saying:

When Luca says he never thought of putting nudity in, that is totally untrue. He sat in this very room where I am sitting now, talking about how he would do it, so when he says that it was a conscious aesthetic decision not to -- well, that's just bullshit.

James Ivory must be quite unhappy about this point if he is willing to call out the man who directed his Oscar-winning script in such a way. Beyond just the fact that Call Me By Your Name did not include the nudity, Ivory seems to believe that Luca Guadagnino's explanation for why the film didn't include it is unsatisfactory. The way Ivory frames it in speaking with The Guardian, he also makes it seem as though the nudity was something that the writer and director agreed to include in the film in advance, so Ivory may see the lack of it as something of a betrayal.

You can see where James Ivory is coming from because this is his story and he wanted it told in a certain way. He is a gay man and he wrote a gay love story, so it makes sense that he would want that to be fully realized on screen. However the nature of filmmaking is compromise, and unless you are directing your own script with complete creative control, there are certain things that may be lost in translation. Ivory also spoke about how he finds sex scenes where there is no nudity and the lovers have sheets strategically placed to cover them up to be disingenuous and unnatural.

Armie Hammer and Timothe Chalamet have clauses in their contracts that ruled out the possibility of nudity despite James Ivory specifying in the screenplay that the characters appear naked. Director Luca Guadagnino is also gay and he chose not to include explicit sex scenes and nudity in the film, instead opting to make the film as accessible and resistant to discrimination as possible. That actually raises an interesting point about what the result would have been if this film had included the nudity.

An actor of Armie Hammer's fame probably wouldn't have been involved if nudity was a requirement, and it is entirely likely that the film would not have enjoyed the success it did. Full-frontal male nudity or more explicit sex scenes may have impacted the rating of the film and could have also made some Academy members less likely to see it or vote for it. It's impossible to say, but nudity may have been the difference between James Ivory and Call Me By Your Name's Oscar win and relative obscurity. Whether that was worth it to him, only he can say.

Jason Momoa Says Henry Cavill Isnt Quitting Superman

There's been a lot of mystery regarding Henry Cavill's future as Superman in the DC Extended Universe, particularly after it was reported back in September that the actor was leaving the franchise behind. However, according to Cavill's DCEU costar Jason Momoa, a.k.a. the cinematic Aquaman, Cavill has no plans to hang up the red cape and 'S' crest anytime soon. As Momoa put it:

I just talked to Henry... He's absolutely not [leaving the character]. He loves the character. He's not. One hundred percent. It's absolutely [not going to happen]

Just to be clear, we have no idea just how much insider knowledge Jason Momoa about Henry Cavill's future with the DCEU, let alone his discussions with Warner Bros. Maybe Cavill did decide to clue Momoa in on his future Superman plans, or maybe Momoa is just being overly optimistic about Cavill coming back for another round of Superman shenanigans. In any case, Momoa made it clear while speaking with ET at the Aquaman premiere at the Hollywood TCL Chinese Theatre Wednesday night that as far as he's concerned, Cavill isn't done with Superman by a long shot.

While Man of Steel 2 has barely seen any progress during its years-long development, Henry Cavill playing Superman again across the entire DCEU was called into question when a rumor came out that Warner Bros and DC were trying to get the actor to cameo in Shazam!, but those talks broke down due to scheduling conflicts because he was working on Mission: Impossible - Fallout.

That said, supposedly this paved the way for Cavill to leave the DCEU behind, though that still has yet to be officially confirmed. Warner Bros later responded that while it has a "great relationship" with Cavill, it hadn't made any decisions "regarding any upcoming Superman films." Henry Cavill's Instagram video didn't help with clearing up this matter.

Aside from another report coming out a month later claiming that both Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck are done with the DCEU, we haven't received any major updates regarding this Superman matter, though if Jason Momoa is to be believed, this is no longer an issue. That said, Amy Adams did recently state that she thinks her time as Lois Lane might be over, which, if true, could mean that either the Superman mythos is being set aside within the DCEU or that it might go through a revamp that leads to new actors playing these characters.

It's worth noting that Henry Cavill did recently sign on to Netflix's The Witcher series, so even if there wasn't any uncertainty about him reprising Superman, he's busy for the foreseeable future. Still, while Jason Momoa's statement might provide some comfort to DCEU/Cavill Superman fans, it would be nice if some official clarification would arrive soon one way or the other.

Why Shooting Avengers: Infinity Wars Opening Scene Was Difficult, According To Kevin Feige

Massive spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War. If you haven't seen it, look away!

While Avengers: Infinity War has been out for a few weeks now, the fandom and moviegoing community as a whole is still recovering from the absolutely wild and emotional ride. The Russo Brothers crafted a dense but rewarding blockbuster, and had no problem with killing off characters at the drop of a hat (or snap of a finger). The stakes of Infinity War were made clear with its opening sequence, which saw Thanos murder Heimdall and Loki after happening upon the Asgardian ship in space. MCU head honcho Kevin Feige recently opened up about the challenges of that specific scene, saying:

Everybody loves being in the shared sandbox, but there's emotion when people have been playing these characters for this long and are this closely. They are as emotionally connected to the characters, if not more so, than the audiences are. So you have to imagine it's emotional as they go through scenes that either represent, as I said, some sort of a curtain dropping, or just scenes that allow them to reflect on how far they've come, so there are a lot of days like that, that were emotional. And for Tom in particular, yeah, there was some. Some days were more emotional than others.

While the excitement to finally jump into Avengers: Infinity War was palpable on set, there was also a sense of dread. Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba played Thanos And Heimdall since 2011's Thor was released, and they no doubt have a special relationship with their signature Marvel characters.

Kevin Feige's comments to The Wrap reveal how emotionally powerful Avengers: Infinity War's opening scene truly was. With two major Marvel characters possibly saying goodbye to their characters forever, there was an added level of urgency that definitely translated onscreen.

Loki's death was a truly horrifying and shocking moment of Avengers: Infinity War, especially given the character's long tenure in the shared universe. Tom Hiddleston's character has been universally regarded as the MCU's best villain, so seeing the Mad Titan choke the life out of him was a game changer that proved that neither Thanos nor the Russos were pulling their punches this time around. The Avengers' big villain ended up being swatted away early in Infinity War, revealing how much has changed in the MCU since Earth's Mightiest Heroes first united in Phase 1.

Tom Hiddleston's contact with the MCU is likely up after Avengers 4, explaining his character's death logistically. But with renewed interest in the Thor franchise after Taika Waititi's Ragnarok, maybe some new deals can be made to keep the likes of Thor and Loki in the shared universe. We'll just have to wait and see if the latter and Heimdall remain dead or return in some way in the future.
