Spider-Man: Far From Home Might Have Spoiled The Twist We All Saw Coming

With Spider-Man: Far From Home just two weeks away from release, the films marketing has gone into full swing. Billboards have been popping up just about everywhere and one in particular has our Spidey senses tingling about Jake Gylenhaals Mysterio true motives. Check it out:

Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development, Ryan Meinerding, showed off a set of two posters he designed that looks to show Mysterio shooting blasts in Spider-Mans direction as the Web-Slinger dodges them. So whats the deal? Will Far From Homes Mysterio be the sworn enemy comic book fans know or the friendlier partner to Spider-Man set up in the movies trailers?

According to Tom Holland, Peter Parker and Quentin Beck (a.k.a. Mysterio) become best friends in Far From Home. Hes not the same villain found on the pages of the comics, hes an alternative Beck from a different Earth in the Multiverse, which was opened when Thanos snap created a tear in the dimension.

Spidey will team up with Mysterio at the orders of Nick Fury to defeat a threat known as the Elementals while on vacation in Europe. This billboard tells a bit of a different story. It seems to vaguely set up the two super-powered individuals as adversaries. It could hint the twist fans have been speculating all along: that Mysterio will turn out to be Far From Homes main villain after all.

Contrary to what the trailers tell us, it would be surprising to see Mysterios first go at the big screen not include his infamously sinister mind at work. The comic book villain is one of Spider-Mans oldest and most formidable foes. Mysterio is also known to create illusions, use hallucinogens and wield special gadgets to confuse and mess with Spider-Mans head.

So just because Far From Home tells us Mysterio is a good guy doesnt mean its the truth. This Mysterio already looks to be more powerful then the master of illusion in the comics. Beck looks to be a legitimate spell-caster with powers similar to the mystic arts introduced in Doctor Strange, although again, this could all just be trickery.

Knowing this, maybe Jake Gyllenhaals character can go to greater lengths to fool Spider-Man. Peter already looks to be distracted over his grief for Tony Stark and desires to spark a romance with Zendayas MJ during his vacation. Or, maybe this poster is strategically making us question Mysterio, who is exactly who he says he is and firing at a threat out of the frame, but toward Spideys direction.

Why Solos Alden Ehrenreich Landed The Role Of Han

With Disney now in charge of the iconic Star Wars franchise, the galaxy far, far away is getting much bigger. In addition to the current trilogy and Rian Johnson's still developing set of movies, the property is also utilizing standalone films as a way to tell unique stories. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story changed the game by bridging the gap between the prequels and A New Hope, and soon Solo will arrive to bring younger versions of the original heroes to the silver screen. Actor Alden Ehrenreich is taking on the mantle of Harrison Ford's signature smuggler, and original directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord have explained what helped him land the gig. Miller recently revealed how the actor's sense of humor and range of emotions helped him get the role of Han Solo.

Alden, remarkably, remained the person to beat from day one. We brought him in many times, pushed him, tried to test his range, and he was always up for it and brought something new, with a great sense of humor.

Chris Miller's comments prove how he and former co-director Phil Lord really thought out who the character Han Solo was at his core. While he may seem brash and arrogant at first, Han has a hidden vulnerability that comes out for his loved ones like Leia, Kylo Ren, and Chewbacca. And aside from being a bad boy with a heart of gold, the smuggler also ultimately has to be funny.

In the same conversation with Esquire, Phil Lord also spoke to the complexity of Alden Ehrenreich's character, saying:

He felt classic and contemporary all at once. He seemed like a tough guy who was really scared.

The mixture of classic and contemporary is a particularly powerful statement, given the pressure associated with Solo: A Star Wars Story. While fans are eager to see their favorite scruffy looking nerf herder back on the silver screen, Alden Ehrenreich has some huge shoes to fill. Han Solo is the undisputed fan favorite character of the Star wars franchise, so attempting to capture the same mixture of machismo and heroics is quite the task.

While the Star Wars franchise is a beloved property passed down from generation to generation, the franchise does seem to be a more contemporary place since Disney took the reigns. The comedy and dialogue in the last few films have a sensibility that feels very now, while still including all the classic aspects of Star Wars that fans are expecting. If Alden Ehrenreich is able to properly mix the past and present for his interpretation of Han Solo, he should be in good shape. Funny enough, there doesn't seem to be much concern over whether or not Donald Glover can pull of Lando. Childish Gambino's got it like that.

Watch The Oscars 2018 Black And White Opening

Tonight's Oscars mark the 90th Academy Awards honoring the best in film - but if you weren't paying super close attention, you might have thought that ABC was rebroadcasting one of the Oscar's earlier ceremonies at the beginning of the show. The night started off with a fun little black and white segment that probably had some viewers looking for their remotes. The nature of these ceremonies don't allow for a ton of flexibility or innovation to do different creative things so this was a fun way to start proceedings, but this opening is pretty funny too, as it pokes fun at the nominees, the ceremony itself, and tops it all off with some light political jokes. The Oscar opening, posted to Jimmy Kimmel's Twitter, really sets a fun tone to start off with. Is it bad that Celebrity Street Fights with Mario Lopez is something I can totally imagine existing, like it doesn't strain believability at all? The ceremony itself can get stuffy and quite serious at points, so a little self-deprecation to kick things off is a fun way to go. Noting that the Dolby Theater, a beacon of film and artistry, is in close proximity to a Hooters, which is a beacon of... not that, is pretty great. The delivery of the voiceover is on point, too, with just the right cadence for the jokes to land. Will Emma Stone win again tonight? NO! Armie Hammer is the product of a witch putting a curse on a Ken doll. Fantastic. This is the sort of good natured humor that works well for the Oscars.

As expected, perhaps more so than in year's past, there are plenty of political and social issues being highlighted at the Oscar ceremony. But instead of getting too serious or bumming everyone out to start the show, the opening has some fun with it. Highlighting Chadwick Boseman as the King of Wakanda and the box office as representing the possibility of a black leader is great. Calling the assembled celebrities in the Dolby Theater "godless Hollywood elitists" also shows some fun self-awareness as to how this assemblage is sometimes viewed. And as expected, the jokes about last year's debacle started early, with Jimmy Kimmel noting how he presided over the calamity only to be brought back for a mulligan. This whole thing works especially well because of the black and white, giving it all a false sense of prestige and seriousness while delivering fun little one-liners and showing that Hollywood can laugh at itself.
