Both Robert Pattinson And Nicholas Hoult Are Allegedly Auditioning For Batman

Since Matt Reeves upcoming movie The Batman is a just over two years away, its time for the movies pre-production to get into high gear and the new Bruce Wayne to be named. Recent reports said Robert Pattinson has been cast as the Caped Crusader, but Warner Bros has not made the announcement yet. Perhaps this is because the actor has not yet scored the role and Dark Phoenix star Nicholas Hoult is still in the running.

Umberto Gonzalez, a reporter with The Wrap, has provided a rumored development on The Batman casting. Heres what he said:

BATMAN UPDATE: Robert Pattinson & Nicholas Hoult are screen testing for the role. I suspect they're screen testing in the Batsuit because Wardrobe Department will need full wardrobe test. Additionally, the film will now start production in Q1 2020.

Per this sources update, there are still two actors in the running and theyre currently going head-to-head for the role with a screen test with the Batsuit. When Robert Pattinsons name was announced a couple weeks ago, Nicholas Hoult was also said to be on the short list. However, Variety gave the edge to Pattinson, describing that he was in negotiations and the studios top choice for the Caped Crusader.

Gonzalezs words also divulge that The Batman will begin shooting in early 2020, after it was previously reported that the films principal photography in London may be pushed back from November. There has been other reports supporting this theory as well.

The update does make some sense considering the decision to cast a new Batman is a huge decision for Warner Bros and DC. Very few high-profile roles such as this have one actor in the running, especially when the look of the character in costume will especially be analyzed, scrutinized and contribute to the success of the film.

Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult may have already made it through a long casting process, and this screen test could be either the first of many or the last audition between one of them nabbing the role. Even if Varietys initial report of Pattinson being the favorite is in fact true, the filmmakers may still want to compare two screen tests to finalize their decision.

Considering all the press Robert Pattinson has received over the past couple of weeks, it would be a strange turn of events to later learn Nicholas Hoult has been cast instead. The internet blew up (and even petitioned) against the news, but Pattinson ultimately has won over a lot of fans interested in his portrayal. A phrase for his version has even been coined reminiscent of Batfleck titled Battinson. How would Hoult's name garner a catchy title?

This is good news for those rooting for Nicholas Hoult to take on Batman after his four-movie run as X-Mens Beast which will presumably end with the upcoming release of Dark Phoenix.

The Batman has a June 25, 2021 release date to make, so sooner or later the new Dark Knight will be announced, maybe with a behind-the-scenes picture of this alleged screen test? That would be cool! Either way itll be exciting to see how the upcoming DC project shapes up.

Matt Reeves Says The Batman Solo Movie Is Going Well

Few solo DCEU films have generated the same level of excitement as the upcoming Batman movie. War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves continues to work on the arduous process of cracking the story, and it seems that things are moving along nicely behind the scenes. In fact, when asked for a project status update by a fan online, Reeves took to social media to share his progress. Addressing how work on the film is going at the moment, Reeves wrote:

Really, really well, thanks! I could not be more excited!

So, if you were worried about the status of the standalone Batman movie, then it looks like there isn't anything to fret over right now. Matt Reeves has asserted that everything is going "really well" behind the scenes, and he is apparently very excited to bring this story to life on the big screen. He obviously offers up nothing concerning concrete plot details or a general direction as to where he wants to take this film (though there's no shortage of story options), but this at least tells us that progress is being made.

This reassurance is essential, as the solo Batman movie has hit its own fair share of speed bumps through its development over the course of the last few years. The most prominent hurdle came when Ben Affleck stepped down as the director of the project, resulting in the eventual search to find Matt Reeves and lock him in place. Now the project appears to have found its footing (though rumors of a possible Batman recasting continue to surface), and Reeves is taking his time to make sure that he gets it right.

With that last point in mind, while Matt Reeves' Twitter post helps offer up a renewed sense of confidence in the status of the project, it is worth remembering that we still might not see the film for a few years. Recent rumors related to the solo Batman movie have suggested that it could begin filming sometime in 2019, with a projected release date aiming for 2020 or 2021. Moreover, Reeves recently signed a development deal with Netflix that will likely see him split his time between the streaming service and his current commitments in the DC Extended Universe. Matt Reeves is making progress, but there's still plenty of work that needs to be done before Bruce Wayne will take center stage for another solo movie.

Captain America: Civil War Concept Art Shows The Wasp In Action

At the end of Ant-Man, Hank Pym showed his daughter, Hope van Dyne, the prototype Wasp suit that was originally designed for her mother, Janet, but now belonged to her. Originally it was considered having Hope jump into action for the first time as Wasp in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, but it was later decided to push her heroic debut back for Ant-Man and the Wasp. However, new concept art has appeared online giving us an idea of what Wasp's participation in Civil War would have looked like.

Marvel Studios Director of Visual Development Andy Park shared this Captain America: Civil War artwork on his Twitter page, showing Ant-Man and Wasp tangling with Hawkeye while Scarlet Witch, Captain America, Black Panther and Winter Soldier are doing their own thing in the background. In case you're wondering why this particular brawl has unfolded, given that Ant-Man and Hawkeye were on the same team in Civil War, this scene came from an earlier version of the movie where the teams were divided differently.

As you can see, in this version of Captain America: Civil War, Hope van Dyne has enough Wasp experience under her belt to shrink and shoot energy blasts. No doubt she would have been a formidable opponent, and part of me wishes that this sequence was animated. However, given how packed with characters Civil War already was, including introducing Black Panther and Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I don't blame Wasp for being left out of the first Phase 3 movie.

Evangeline Lilly noted earlier this year that the rationale behind leaving Wasp out of Captain America: Civil War was because the Marvel Studios bigwig wanted to dedicate an entire movie to the heroine's "introduction" rather than just having her be a "side note" in a larger story. That's also the reason why Wasp wasn't in Avengers: Infinity War, although it turns out there was also a story reason for that, as most of Ant-Man and the Wasp takes place before Thanos and his minions arrive on Earth.

So ultimately we had to wait two extra years to see Hope van Dyne get her superhero on, but that time finally came this past summer in Ant-Man and the Wasp, where she and Scott Lang had to face off against the likes of Ghost and Sonny Burch, all while trying to finally free her mother from the Quantum Realm. The sequel also addressed Hope's absence from Captain America: Civil War by mentioning how Scott went off to help Team Captain America without her, which is the reason why a rift had grown between them.

Sadly, Ant-Man and the Wasp ended badly for Hope, Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne, as they were turned to dust by the Thanos snap while Scott Lang was in the Quantum Realm. However, Evangeline Lilly is confirmed to appear in Avengers 4, which comes out on May 3, 2019. So whatever the Phase 3 capper has in store, we can take comfort knowing that Hope's story isn't over yet.
