Why Reshoots For Marvel Movies Arent A Big Deal, According To Kevin Feige

While there is often a negative gut reaction summoned when the word "reshoots" comes up in Hollywood, the truth is that they shouldn't have the stigma that they do. It's true that to some productions the definition of the term is "complete overhaul," but more often than that it translates to "minor fixes." On the whole, it's this latter take that is actually part of the overall strategy for the storytellers over at Marvel Studios, as recently outlined by President Kevin Feige:

We test; there are earlier versions of Ant-Man and the Wasp that you would not be saying nice things about, as is true for all of our films. You cut together what you have and watch it, you see what you have and how you want to adapt it, you go and shoot additional materials (which we do on all of our movies) and we begin to shape it. I don't think people realize what a collaborative, living, sort of piece of art a film is. Four weeks ago, this movie was different.

As part of the promotional tour for Ant-Man And The Wasp, Kevin Feige sat down with Los Angeles Daily News to discuss Marvel's 20-film run of success - and as you can see above, part of their conversation was dedicated to discussion about the evolution of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies through the various stages of production. The producer/executive in particular highlighted the massive changes often made during the editing stage, noting that not-so-great versions of the finished product exist as little as a month before theatrical release.

While Marvel's particular approach in this department may be unique (not many movies are throwing around the same kind of money), the reality is that a vague version of this strategy has been a part of filmmaking from the very beginning. There is an axiom in the industry that a movie is written three times: once as the script is coming together; again as new ideas are being thrown around during production; and a third time as everything is being cut together. The final draft of a screenplay is never a transcript of the finished product. Marvel Studio's tactic is really just an extreme case, with millions of dollars flying around.

Whatever Marvel Studios is doing behind the scenes is clearly working, as every film they've released since 2015 has made north of $500 million worldwide (Ant-Man And The Wasp is already on its way), and all but six of their titles have earned scores over 80% on Rotten Tomatoes (and all are rated "Fresh"). Surely the developing Captain Marvel will be made just the same way, as will Avengers 4, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - and we're excited for all of them.

6 Pokemon Movies Wed Like To See After Detective Pikachu

Warning: spoilers for Pokemon: Detective Pikachu are in play. If you dont want to be spoiled, head over to another story and come back once youre current.

Over this past weekend, the world was more than kind to the unveiling of what represents the first step into a greater world, with the release of Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. As the world of the Pokemon craze has finally hit the big screen in live-action, the possibilities are now endless.

But in a world where any Pokemon movie could happen, which ones should? Theres already a wealth of films that could come out of this first installment, and its a topic worthy of discussion.

In honor of Pokemon: Detective Pikachus impressive opening weekend, and in tribute to all of the Pokemon fans out there who made it so big, heres a list of the next films wed love to see come out of this burgeoning cinematic universe.

Detective Pikachu 2The first suggestion is an obvious one, as Pokemon: Detective Pikachu could always use a direct sequel, and one is already in the works. With Justice Smiths Tim Goodman now staying in Ryme City with his father, and his intent to try and become a detective, theres definitely room for at least one more adventure with the Goodman family.

While itd obviously have to be different than the first film, as Harrys Pikachu wouldnt have his consciousness in it this time, the wisecracks between father and son would basically serve the purpose that Detective Pikachu did in this first film. Also, the bonus is that wed get to discover the personality of the actual Pikachu that Harrys partnered up with, which is bound to be cute and informative.

Pokemon SnapOne of the most fondly remembered games in the Pokemon canon, Pokemon Snap has a pretty simple story to it. A young man by the name of Todd Snap is hired to take pictures of various Pokemon, in a region that doesnt see a lot of human action. This allows anyone who wants to visit it access to some hard data about various species and their lives in the wild.

If thats not a fantastic idea for a Pokemon film, then good luck finding another one. Pokemon Snap could be an adventure on the same level as Jurassic Park, with a small group of photographers joining Todd along for the ride. Weve seen the miracle of Pokemon living with humans already, so seeing them undisturbed in the wild, along with any exciting consequences that come from when they are disturbed, seems like itd be a lot of fun.

Team Rockets Origin StoryConfession time: when the mysterious substance R was revealed in Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, it felt like there was a setup in the works that would eventually reveal Team Rocket as a part of the cinematic universe. While that never panned out, it wouldnt be a terrible idea to help expand that corner of the universe.

We already know that the events of Pokemon: The First Movie are canon, thanks to Mewtwos backstory folding it into Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. So going back to where it all began, and bringing that story into a live-action context, would be another great step to building the Pokemon stable of films.

A Pokemon: The First Movie Live-Action RemakeAnother good thing about folding Pokemon: The First Movie into the canon that exists in the live-action film universe of Pokemon is the fact that, if the studio really wanted to, they could remake that classic original film. And remaking it into a live-action version would serve more of a purpose than just reviving nostalgia.

For starters, the story of Pokemon: The First Movie could be enhanced and retrofitted to slot in with Pokemon: Detective Pikachus story a lot better. Also, bringing back the adventures of Ash Ketcham and his dear friends in a new remake would set up an entire series of his adventures being brought to film, filling in the years in-between. Of course, theres another reason that bringing Pokemon: The First Movie into the recent canon would work perfectly, and its to set up another new opportunity to tell a Pokemon-centric story.

A Brand New Mewtwo Stand-Alone StoryWith Mewtwo wondering around the wilderness of the Pokemon universe for almost two decades, theres a lot of story that could be told in that very window of opportunity. Much like Planet of the Apes Caesar, Mewtwo has a hell of a story to be told when dealing with his checkered past involving humanity.

And much like Pokemon Snap, this Mewtwo stand-alone adventure could take the action to a far off location in the more wooded areas past Ryme City, allowing for more open and wild adventures to take place. Throw in the fact that we might even get to see what Mew has been up to in the time that Mewtwo has been running wild, and thats just more story for the taking in a Mewtwo movie.

Super Smash Bros: The MoviePerhaps the greatest potential for a Pokemon follow-up movie is one that would take some heavy lifting, and years of preparation. With a roster of characters from games far and wide, Super Smash Bros is something that would excite fans of not only Pokemon, but also the greater video game universe. But even if you're not a dyed in the wool fan of this particular fighting series, being a fan of at least one of the properties represented will give you a way into the story of this particular film.

The game's simple story of combatants from all over being drawn together to fight for victory under a specific set of circumstances is basically The Avengers of video games, and taking that to the big screen would be a feat that would be so daunting, and yet so rewarding. If the creative team behind a Super Smash Bros movie nailed that concept on film, the payoff would be so great that there might be hope for other video game movies to get it right themselves. Also, Pikachu and Mewtwo are just two of the Pokemon available in that game, so the ties to the franchise run deeper than most would expect.

Six movies, each of them amazing examples of how Pokemon has set itself up to tell a story so great, it could chance the face of video game movies forever. In Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, Warner Bros and the creative team they've enlisted have proven that they truly understand the world of the franchise and what it needed to become a live-action crossover hit. Now it's time to push the envelope again, and choose to go places that this series, and video game films in general, haven't gone yet, if not for the studio's sake, then for the fans who are already enamored with Pokemon: Detective Pikachu.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu is in theaters now, waiting for Pokemon fans to understand the power thats inside this new cinematic universe. But before we leave, we have a question: which of these potential Pokemon films do you want to see the most?

Why Avengers 4 Might Start Out In An Alternate Reality

Even with Black Panther being the talk of the town right now, there's a ridiculously high amount of anticipation for the Marvel movie afterwards, Avengers: Infinity War, which will see this franchise's heroes battling Thanos and the Black Order. Our esteemed protagonists will fight their hardest to ensure that the Mad Titan doesn't seize all six Infinity Stones and become a god, but with Avengers 4 arriving next year, it's entirely possible that either they won't be successful or that a new threat will rise up in Thanos' place. Taking into account what the Infinity Stones are capable of when joined together, as well as the fact that Avengers 4 will mark the end of an era in the MCU, that leads me to suspect that the final Phase Three entry will be partially set within an alternate reality, kicking off an epic story requiring the surviving heroes to revert things back to normal.

Even though Avengers: Infinity War isn't concluding the MCU's Phase Three, it's been teased for years that it will have huge ramifications on this universe, so much so that Marvel is still keeping tight-lipped on what Avengers 4 will be called. But before going too deeply into that, let's look at what movies Marvel is releasing between Infinity War and Avengers 4: Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel. It was revealed last summer that Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s, telling Carol Danvers' origin story that involves a Nick Fury who still has two working eyes. We'll reunite with Carol in Avengers 4, but our first encounter with her will take place approximately a decade before the modern day MCU events begin.

Then there's Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is a little harder to pin down. We know for a fact that the Ant-Man sequel is set after Captain America: Civil War, and judging by the trailer that was released last week, it looks like Scott Lang is coming at the end of his house arrest, and one would imagine it'd be difficult (though not impossible) to finagle his way out of that to save the world from a purple-skinned alien warlord and then return to life as usual. Although Paul Rudd is credited on IMDB for Avengers: Infinity War, but he hasn't been shown in any of the movie's previews or marketing material so far, suggesting his role is either minimal or non-existent. So perhaps something happens in Ant-Man and the Wasp that prevents Scott from either fully participating in the battle or he just isn't around at all, which could also double as the reason for why Wasp isn't present.

This is obviously in no way official, but for the sake of argument, let's assume that Ant-Man and the Wasp is also set pre-Avengers: Infinity War. This means that within the MCU timeline, Infinity War and Avengers 4 will happen one after the other, allowing for the former movie to set up a shocking twist for the latter movie, like a full-blown reality change. Thanos admitted in the first Infinity War trailer that he wants to balance the universe, though it's unclear if he wants to follow in his comic book counterpart's footsteps and destroy it all as a profession of his love to Death, or if he just wants to remake reality to something more to his liking. We also can't discount the possibility that someone else using the Infinity Stones to change reality, as in the Infinity Gauntlet comic book storyline, both Nebula and Adam Warlock briefly possessed those powers. Josh Brolin did admit that Thanos might not obtain all the Infinity Stones, but that doesn't mean another individual couldn't succeed where he failed.

Some unofficially-released information concerning Avengers 4 also suggests that our protagonists won't quite be themselves during the movie, from Clint Barton potentially becoming Ronin to Robert Downey Jr. wearing a S.H.I.E.L.D. jacket and having blonde-ish hair in a scene where he's interacting with a younger Captain America. Granted, these could simply be status quo changes from the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War, but if Avengers 4 is going to be as large in scale as Infinity War, if not larger, then seeing these characters living similar, yet very different lives in an all-new reality would be a cool way to bring something unique to the table.

We also know that Tony Stark's holographic B.A.R.F. technology will factor into Avengers 4, so maybe Tony or someone else is able to retain their memories of the main MCU (like how Wolverine remembered the original Marvel universe during the House of M comic book storyline), and they have to use B.A.R.F. to display these memories as a template for how reality is supposed to look once they start putting everything back to normal with the Infinity Stones or some other kind of great cosmic/magical power. That objective would surely be accomplished towards the end of Avengers 4, if not somewhere closer to the middle part of the movie. When all is said and done, the world we've watched on the big screen for more than a decade would be functioning normally again, marking the end of one chapter and segueing into a new one.
