Looks Like Steve Trevor Is Going To Be In Wonder Woman 1984 After All

Quick, list the most heartbreaking comic book movie sequences of the last five years. You're sure to select a broad range of moments from all over the Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men universe, and DCEU, but one obvious choice that's hard to ignore is the death of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) in Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman. The character's heroic demise in the final moments of the film led many to wonder (pun intended) if that was the last we would ever see of the fan-favorite hero. It looks like that's not the case, as a new look at Wonder Woman 2 (now called Wonder Woman 1984), has been released online by Warner Bros., and it features a clear shot at the old character in a new, 1984-oriented setting. Check it out, below.

In all honesty, Steve Trevor looks just as confused as the rest of us. The character is not only somehow alive almost seventy years after seemingly perishing to prevent a plane full of German gas from reaching London, but he also looks like he hasn't aged a day. We don't necessarily know how Steve Trevor will factor into Wonder Woman 1984's story, but his return promises some seriously emotional turns for Gal Gadot's Diana Prince.

Of course, this image has us wondering how Steve Trevor could return for Wonder Woman 1984 in a way that feels earned. One obvious explanation would be that he's merely appearing in a dream sequence -- though for Diana to imagine him wearing clothing from the 1980s might seem silly. Another possibility is that Chris Pine is simply playing a descendant of Steve Trevor who also happens to be named Steve, which is actually something that the comics and Wonder Woman TV series have played with over the years.

Another possibility to consider is the idea that this isn't Steve Trevor at all. DC lore is chock full of characters who can disguise themselves as other heroes and villains, so the idea of Chris Pine returning to play someone like Martian Manhunter or even Clayface seems reasonable. After all, for Warner Bros. to tell us that Steve Trevor/Chris Pine is back in Wonder Woman 1984 seems like a massive spoiler to give away this early in the film's development, so there is a case to be made that Patty Jenkins and the folks at DC have another secret hidden up their sleeves.

Will wonders never cease! Not one, but two awesome Wonder Woman 1984 teases in one day! That's right, folks. We now have our first good look at Gal Gadot as Diana, and she (or at least her reflection) looks fantastic! Check her out, below.

Gleaning clear plot details from such an enigmatic image is hard, especially this early in Wonder Woman 1984's development. That said, it seems reasonable to assume that Wonder Woman 1984 will be a bit more referential of pop culture with its story, and it will have a more colorful, neon look than the gray, muted atmosphere of the WWI-set original.

Why Superhero Movies Are So Popular, According To The Shazam! Filmmakers

Whether you love superhero movies or your name is James Cameron and you're waiting for "Avenger fatigue" to set in, there's no question superhero movies are more popular than ever. Sure, they can fail sometimes, just ask Fantastic Four. But more often than not, superheroes win and they win big. DC's Shazam! just joined the ranks of the winners with a solid #1 opening weekend at the box office.

Shazam! follows the $1 billion success of DC's Aquaman and the $1 billion success of Marvel's Captain Marvel, and precedes the probably $2+ billion success of Avengers: Endgame -- which itself follows the $2 billion success of Avengers: Infinity War. Phew! If you follow the money, it leads right to Marvel and DC.

But why? Why are comic book superheroes so popular right now? It's a question many have been asking, and Shazam! director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran shared their takes:

David F. Sandberg: Partly I think it's the wish fulfillment. And that's why I love Shazam! so much, because it's kind of the ultimate wish fulfillment with this kid getting to be a superhero.Peter Safran: And I think it's really about the great characters that populate a lot of the superhero movies. Each superhero movie is different than the other superhero movies. It's a large genre, but within it you have heist movies, you have comedies, you have pure action. So I think there's a lot of room.

I especially like Peter Safran's take to Collider. Because it's true, it's almost like Superhero has become its own genre like Comedy or Drama and there are subgenres within that go in many different directions. I also think good superhero movies inspire and elevate others -- competition is good for the market (until it isn't).

Hollywood is notorious for wanting to just copy what works, and right now superhero movies just work -- they not only make tons of money, they tend to be crowd and sometimes even critic pleasers. That leads to repeat viewing in theaters and also at home, which brings even more money.

David F. Sandberg has a background in horror, and CinemaBlend's own Mike Reyes recently asked him why he thinks horror directors make such good superhero films. After all, Shazam! is following in the footsteps of The Conjuring king James Wan's Aquaman, which is the highest-grossing DC Comics film yet. Sandberg had a pretty good answer on that.

Not everyone is thrilled with superhero movies flooding theaters, often pushing away anything that isn't Marvel or DC related. That could be an issue in the next couple of months, especially when theaters are going to want to have as many showings of Avenges: Endgame as possible.

What will that mean for any film not named Avengers: Endgame? Hopefully there's room for everyone, from superhero movies and other action blockbuster sequels (Star Wars: Episode IX, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, John Wick 3) to Disney's 9 million live-action remakes (see you soon, The Lion King and Aladdin) right down to original non-sequel movies. Like Us.

Speaking of horror directors and superhero movies, though, is there any way to drag Jordan Peele into the DC or Marvel universes? Or would it be better if steered clear?

Guy Ritchie Gave His Aladdin Choreographer A Very Funny Cameo In The New Movie

In the making of a musical, a choreographer is an immensely important, but sometimes invisible presence. Its an incredibly hard job that occasionally requires making sure a hundred or more people are working in coordination, but part of the choreographers job is to make sure it all looks effortless and natural.

This is partially true for the new live-action Aladdin, as while youre watching the movie youre focusing on the magic of the dance sequences instead of thinking about the work required to make them happen but something you might not know is that the film does give back in a special way to the man who helped make the musical numbers possible, as I recently learned from director Guy Ritchie:

As noted in the video above, one of my favorite bits in the new movie involves a prince that Genie (Will Smith) conjures in the desert during a conversation with Aladdin (Mena Massoud), and I was surprised to learn during a recent interview with Guy Ritchie that the person playing said prince is none other than Jamal Sims the films choreographer. You never see a close-up of the character, as he is kept in the far distance for his entire scene, but that makes it no less an awesome gift to one of the filmmakers responsible for injecting the live-action Aladdin with a great deal of its flair.

It was a cameo that Guy Ritchie was very excited to talk about during the Los Angeles press day for his new movie this past weekend, as he expressed a great deal of appreciation for Jamal Sims contribution to the film. Discussing the small role, the filmmaker told me,

So I'm quite glad you asked that question, because he is Jamal Sims. Jamal Sims is our choreographer, who I have nothing but positive things to say about. For example, if people ask me what was my favorite scene in the film is, because I have the memory of a goldfish I usually go for the last scene in the film, which is the dance sequence, right? Which was Jamal's. And I gave him all that challenge a week before. And I thought, 'I'm sure he's going to fail,' though he failed on nothing else. It was very hard to pull off a dance sequence in a short period of time, and he really delivered on that.

The scene plays out shortly after Aladdin and Genie manage to escape the Cave Of Wonders and are discussing what it is that the latter can do for the former wish-wise. Realizing that he needs to be royalty in order to marry the lovely Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott), Aladdin makes the request, Make me a prince but Genie points out that this phrasing is just a tad vague. Illustrating his point, the magical being conjures an actual prince who is left standing about 500 feet behind them having absolutely no clue whats going on wondering where his palace is, and just wanting to go home. This is the part played by Jamal Sims, and he gets some of the biggest laughs in the film.

Having the choreographer play this part was a special way for Guy Ritchie to say thank you for the work that Sims did in the making of the movie, which apparently also included the coordination of an end credits dance sequence that came together at the very last minute. The director added that he even gave the prince more lines than what we actually see in the finished cut of Aladdin, and that it was all quite funny:

Jamal was a key character throughout the entire production. 'I just want to go home, man.' So that was Jamal. We wanted to use Jamal because he was so integral to the movie. 'Anyone see my palace? Where's my palace?' He actually had more dialogue. I think if you saw the whole thing of Jamal Sims and the lost prince, it's quite entertaining.

We cant say for certain right now, but that would certainly make for some great bonus content on Aladdins home video release later this year.
