Shazam! Director Clarifies Why The Movie Needed Reshoots

Superhero movies may have become commonplace, but DC's live-action universe has had a particularly fascinating road to theaters. Tons of projects have been announced over the past few years, although quite a few have also been cancelled in the process. But there are a handful heading to theaters, starting with Aquaman and Shazam! The latter is about to head into reshoots, with some fans worrying about what might be altered.

Reshoots have become almost a curse word for DC fans, as they plagued Justice League and resulted in the film's lackluster final product. Rumors indicated Shazam! reshoots happening for a variety of reasons, and now director David F. Sandberg has addressed them directly, saying:

All normal stuff. No changing the tone, removing DC references or whatever else theories are out there.

Well, that seems pretty cut and dry. Hearing fans' concerns about the Shazam! reshoots, David F. Sandberg laid out what's being worked on now that production has started back up. More specifically, he detailed what definitely was NOT being adjusted for his upcoming DC blockbuster.

David F. Sandberg's Shazam! update comes from his Twitter, where the filmmaker regular communicates directly with the fandom. Shazam! is a major gig for Sandberg, with his movie able to reach a massive audience due to the popularity of the genre. As such, he's often fielding questions from moviegoers about the DC movie.

Moviegoers' feelings toward reshoots is somewhat fascinating, as the new obsession begun just in the last few years. Blockbusters have absolutely massive budgets, so reshoots are usually worked into the schedule from the jump. But after seeing a few movies drastically changed due to these type of reshoots, the fandom has some trepidation when it comes to additional filming.

This is especially true for DC fans, given how Justice League turned out. Director Zack Snyder departed the project in the wake of a family tragedy, with The Avengers and Buffy director Joss Whedon completing the film. But in the wake of Batman v Superman's lukewarm critical reaction, Whedon reportedly tried to lighten the tone with his expensive reshoots, and the blockbuster was a frankenstein film when it finally arrived in theaters.

Anticipation for Shazam! was pretty steady, but it really picked up once the first trailer debuted during San Diego Comic-Con. It showed a fun, youthful tone unique to the superhero genre, and fans are eager to see more footage as the movie approaches theaters. From David F. Sandberg's comments, it seems like nothing unexpected has popped up to change in Shazam!, and the new footage will simply help bring the upcoming movie together in a cohesive way.

Brie Larson Teases What Sets Captain Marvel Apart From Other Superheroes

Weve seen a lot of superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during its decade-plus existence, and even more when you factor in the wider comic book movie genre, so it takes a lot for a hero to stand out. In one short week, audiences will be introduced to a new hero in the MCU: Brie Larsons Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel. In a conversation with CinemaBlends own Sarah El-Mahmoud, Brie Larson spoke about what sets Captain Marvel apart, saying:

I love that shes flawed. I love the fact that because shes a risk taker, you watch someone who also then falls on her face because theyre swinging big, that feels very relatable to me. I love that you see someone who doesnt always make the right judgment call. A lot of the time with action heroes and superheroes, theyre always perfect, they always make the right call and I think its important to watch people make mistakes and atone for those mistakes.

For Brie Larson, Carol Danvers imperfection is what makes her interesting and also what sets her apart from many other superheroes. Shes not an all-powerful Boy Scout like Superman or even someone like Captain America who is almost always in the right. Captain Marvel is bold, brash and she takes big chances trying to do the right thing, and sometimes she screws up royally.

Those kinds of failures, making the wrong decision, suffering the consequences and then trying to fix things, is a very human trait that we can all relate to and clearly what appealed to Brie Larson about the character. Those lessons are how people grow, and with Captain Marvel, we are not meeting someone that is a perfect, fully formed individual, but someone who is still figuring things out and will stumble along the way.

That humanity, the fact that these superheroes have problems and flaws just like any other person, is a hallmark of Marvel characters, and while I wouldnt say it is exclusive to Captain Marvel (Tony Starks screw ups have been a driving story of the MCU), in some ways it is more necessary for her.

Captain Marvel is so powerful that it will be rare that she comes up short in terms of ability or firepower. That makes her badass and an exciting addition to the MCU, but a character that is too powerful and always makes the right call could come off as boring. Yet with Carol Danvers, her Achilles heel is that she is a flawed person who makes mistakes and bad choices.

Having a huge gun like Captain Marvel in the fight against a big villain is great, but only if you can count on her to make the right calls in the moment, otherwise shes a liability. That makes Captain Marvel compelling because those flaws can have serious consequences, just look at the results of Peter Quills poor choices in Avengers: Infinity War.

The Moment In The Hobbs And Shaw Trailer Thats Very Special To Dwayne Johnson

Earlier this month at CinemaCon, Universal Pictures threw all of its energy into celebrity performances from the likes of Octavia Spencer, Kevin Hart (holding a rabbit meant to represent his Secret Life of Pets 2 character), Tiffany Haddish, Danny BoyleI could go on and on. But the particular highlight was a new Hobbs & Shaw trailer, which really amped the energy in the room.

Ahead of that happening though, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and David Leitch were in attendance to talk about why the Hobbs & Shaw Fast and Furious spinoff movie is going to deliver the goods. The three men talked about how the Fast and Furious spinoff movie combines the cultures that Johnson and Statham are familiar with and grew up in, and theres a specific moment shown in the trailer that is very near and dear to Dwayne Johnsons heart.

Heres what he revealed:

Theres a moment in [the] trailer where the energy changes and theres something called the Haka. You guys familiar with the Haka? OK great. Well, we dont do that in this movie. But what we do is called the Siva Tau. The Siva Tau is the Samoan version of the Haka and we still call upon our ancestors. [In this trailer] I leave the Siva Tau and for the very first time in a blockbuster tentpole movie were very proud to showcase our two cultures, England and culture Samoa.

Theres been a push to incorporate more from a diverse variety of cultures in movies lately. In fact, the Haka that Dwayne Johnson mentions was put to use at the Aquaman premiere by Jason Momoa and that culture was brought into that movie as well.

Dwayne Johnson is both black and Samoan and he has been open about his familys history and his pride related to that history. He recently tweeted about how he was able to transcend race in wrestling so that he wouldnt just get booked that way," but he's ready to share his heritage in a big way in Hobbs & Shaw.

Johnson went on to state at CinemaCon 2019:

Its the very first time weve seen Samoa ever featured and ever showcased in the movieYes we have the explosions and the epic-ness of everything youd expect from a Fast and Furious movie but now you also have this mana, the spirit that we lived in Jason and I, David, all of us.

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham went on to talk about the hugging and joke about too close huggingas well as talk about the camaraderie on the set of Hobbs & Shaw. So even though Deckard Shaw and Luke Hobbs have a bit of a competitive relationship, its clear the idea of family thats such a big deal to the Fast and Furious franchise is going to translate into this new offshoot as well.

In terms of the Siva Tau, the Samoan war dance, weve already seen a preview of this sort of chanting thanks to an official photo shared by Dwayne Johnson himself.

If that image doesnt already give you an idea of the vibe of Hobbs & Shaw perhaps a look at the new trailer is what you need.

Now that weve seen a the sneak preview at the scene, Im very hopeful that youll get to see the special moment that was a big deal for Dwayne Johnson soon. After all Hobbs & Shaw is officially released on Friday August 2, which is not so very far away. More footage is coming and it will definitely be an explosive day when it does.
