This Year Brought The Worst Super Bowl Box Office Weekend In Two Decades

This Year Brought The Worst Super Bowl Box Office Weekend In Two Decades

There was nothing particularly "Super" about Super Bowl 2019 weekend. Lowest game scores ever. Lowest box office in almost 20 years.

Womp womp.

Ticket sales at the domestic box office were only around $68 million to $70 million. That's the worst for a Super Bowl weekend in 19 years, THR reports, and also among the top 20 slowest weekends for any time since 1997.

It's like we've all turned into the sloths in Zootopia.

As we noted in our weekend box office roundup, Glass took the top spot for the third week in a row. Writer/director M. Night Shyamalan thanked fans for supporting his film, but this past weekend's $9.5 million take wasn't much to brag about. Newcomers to the screen -- like Miss Bala -- did even worse.

According to Box Office Mojo, the top 12 only made a combined $55.4 million. Combined! As they noted, that was the worst showing for the top 12 films since the first weekend in September 2017.

At least the weekend gave Glass the ego boost of being No. 1 again, and it also looked good for The Upside to take second place, with Miss Bala behind it, and then good ol' Aquaman adding to its billion-plus-total, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse at No. 5. Green Book seems to be riding a high of Oscar nominations, and maybe the controversies added some curiosity too, since it took No. 6, ahead of The Kid Who Would Be King at No. 7.

The A-list team behind Serenity was upset at the lack of promotion for that film, and in Week 2 it only ranked No. 14, adding $1.7 million for a current total of $7.5 million. That gave it the truly appalling per-screen average of $664. Contrast that with Miss Bala, which had a disappointing opening, but actually played in fewer theaters than Serenity, and its $6.7 million opening at least gave it a $3,041 per-screen average.

So Super Bowl weekend wasn't a great time in the U.S., at least at the box office. Why not? Weather, maybe. But mostly, no real competition. The year is about to get packed with films, and a few of them are probably going to wish they had taken advantage of this quiet weekend to try and make their own mark.

This coming February 8-10 weekend is a whole other ball of box office wax, and things are only going to pick up from there. Glass is definitely retiring as the king of the box office -- going out with a whimper, not a bang -- with The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Cold Pursuit, The Prodigy, and What Men Want on the way.

Check out our predictions for how those films will do, at least with critics, and bookmark our 2019 movie schedule for details on all the great movies ahead. The year may be having a sloooowwwww start, but it's going to pick up FAST when the superheroes swoop in, very soon.

Infinity War's Captain Marvel Nod Could Have Looked Different

Infinity War's Captain Marvel Nod Could Have Looked Different

Marvel is known for intriguing post-credits scenes, and Avengers: Infinity War offered a doozy of one. Both Maria Hill and Nick Fury realized that people were disappearing and, in the last moments before the snap, Nick Fury used a 90s device to clue Captain Marvel in to the fact things were going to hell on Earth. Recently, designer Fausto De Martini revealed he had designed a different piece of technology for the big alert scene early on. You can take a look, below.

According to Fausto De Martini's post, the design we all saw at the end of Avengers: Infinity War was not one that he had created. However, he was asked to do some mockups early on and he shared a look at what his version of a '90s era communication device would have looked like. He also noted the Palm Pilot was the inspiration for what would become a communicator between Nick Fury and Carol Danvers. All in all, it's a cool look at how much attention to detail goes into creating a Marvel film.

Presumably, the events in Captain Marvel will at least have some ties to what is going on in Avengers: Infinity War and its follow-up, the still untitled Avengers 4. If Carol Danvers had still been hanging around on Earth in the time after the 90s-set Captain Marvel, likely we would have heard of her being around in the Avengers era.

In addition, the fact she and Nick Fury are communicating through a 90s device means that she likely hasn't been in contact with the man for some time and maybe even since the events in Captain Marvel. There are a whole slew of theories relating to Nick Fury and Carol Danvers rolling around out there, including but not limited to the idea that Fury may have had some prescience over what was and perhaps is to come.

Previously, Kevin Feige revealed that Nick Fury opted to contact Carol Danvers at the end of Infinity War because he realized the Earth and its heroes were facing something beyond the scope of what could be handled. Per Marvel's head honcho:

She is more powerful than any character we've introduced thus far. So that alone tells you that there's a reason Nick hit that button at the end [of Infinity War], when he realized that they were up against something far bigger than they had ever been up against before. And having her on your side is hopefully going to change the balance of power in a way that they desperately need.

We'll finally have some answers regarding Nick Fury's relationship with Captain Marvel soon. Captain Marvel is the first Marvel title hitting theaters during the new year, and you can catch it on the big screen starting on March 8, 2019. Avengers 4 will follow on May 3, 2019. Take a look at the full lineup for next year, superheroes and all, with our full movies schedule.

What Venom's Success Really Means For Sony's Spider-Verse

What Venom's Success Really Means For Sony's Spider-Verse

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Venom!

A few short years ago, Sony basically rented out Spider-Man after the franchise-killing The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This year, with Spidey off fighting aliens in the MCU, Sony decided it was going to try its hand again at universe-building, only this time it would be with Spider-Man antagonist Venom. Before Venom's release, there was a lot of suspicion that the anti-hero film would be a dud, and that it would mark Sony's ambitious hopes for a shared cinematic Spider-Verse as dead on arrival.

Obviously those fears did not bear out. Venom has been a smash hit for Sony, enjoying a worldwide box office of over $822 million and counting, which vaults the symbiote over other more established and recognizable superheroes like Wonder Woman and the Justice League. Venom has also pushed Sony past box office milestones and helped the studio ink a multi-picture deal with IMAX.

Venom delivered without the web-slinger and its success seems to paint a rosy picture for the future of Sony's Spider-Verse, setting up future spinoffs of Spider-Man characters for box office riches. However, what Venom's success really means is that Venom has a bright future; it doesn't mean that Sony's Spider-Verse at large is primed for prosperity.

This notion might seem antithetical. After all, if Venom is the start of the Spider-Verse, and Venom is a success, doesn't that mean that the Spider-Verse is likely to be? And sure, Venom's performance is certainly the best possible outcome for Sony, as a flop likely would have killed the Spider-Verse in its infancy. Yet, while Venom got this shared cinematic universe started off on the right foot, box office-wise at least, it does not guarantee anything about the non-Venom films in the works.

The reason, for the most part, comes down to character. To kick off its shared cinematic universe, Sony picked Venom: a very popular Spider-Man villain that had already been depicted in live action. Venom is extremely recognizable with a cool look and he has great awareness among even those only tangentially attuned to the world of comic book characters.

Now consider the other names reportedly tapped for their own spinoff films in Sony's Spider-Verse after Venom: Black Cat, Silver Sable, Morbius, Nightwatch, Silk, and Kraven the Hunter. Of those I would guess that Black Cat or maybe Morbius has the greatest name value, but to say that they are a step down from Venom is an understatement.

Iron Man was a B-list character before his 2008 Marvel Studios film, but he was still followed by characters of similar popularity and name value with Thor and Captain America. Venom may be an A-list Spidey villain, but characters like Nightwatch and Silk do not enjoy the same cachet as the Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus.

This is in no way an indictment of Sony's choices; it's awesome that some lesser-known characters will get some cinematic shine while more still will be battling Spider-Man on the MCU side of things. Yet the relative obscurity of the characters coming to Sony's Spider-Verse makes the universe as a whole very much a question mark.

To Venom's credit, it didn't commit that increasingly common sin of doing too much universe-building for future films and not enough storytelling in its own movie. Venom simply used its end-credits scene to tease a sequel that will see Woody Harrelson's Carnage enter the fray. But by not teasing something like Morbius, it puts more of an onus on that film to sell itself, with a character that the wider public probably hasn't heard of.

In many ways it all comes back to the big question we had before Venom was released: "Can he work without Spider-Man?" The reviews for the film seem to indicate that no, he cannot. But reviews aren't the sole arbiter -- or even the primary one -- of success. And the worldwide audience has spoken, and in an indiscernible Tom Hardy accent, said 'We don't need no stinking Spider-Man!'

Nevertheless, what's true for Venom may not be true for the rest of the Spider-Verse. Just because Venom doesn't need Spider-Man doesn't mean the other characters don't. Peter Parker is the glue that holds these characters together on the page and we don't yet know how well they will all work in his absence. (Supposedly Spider-Man will be in the Kraven the Hunter movie, but that film is still in the early stages, so everything is TBD.)

Sure, like Venom, these spinoff characters have had their own solo comics, but that's in a world where they were first introduced opposite the web-slinger. My guess is that the less prominent the character, the more keenly Spidey's absence will be felt. And without Spider-Man to sell these spinoffs to general audiences, the rest of the Spider-Verse has its work cut out for it.

Despite all these reservations, Sony's Spider-Verse is in a much better position than it was prior to Venom's release, when reports of all the spinoffs seemed like a studio counting its eggs before they hatched. Now Sony has two 2020 dates marked for Spider-Man spinoffs, presumably Morbius and Venom 2.

The latter is the real product of Venom's success. Venom 2 will build off the first film's resonance with audiences and likely be a huge hit at the box office, especially internationally. But two Venom films or five that all crack $800 million do not a successful shared cinematic universe make. If only Iron Man movies were hits, it would be a series, not a cinematic universe; a team effort is required.

Still, Venom 2 and Morbius can begin to lay greater groundwork for this shared cinematic universe, using Venom as the anchor to build upon. There are other things working in the Spider-Verse's favor too, like the fact that Sony is clearly going for talent. Landing Oscar winner Jared Leto for the role of Dr. Michael Morbius certainly shouldn't hurt that film's chances and Morbius can be pitched as something of a horror/vampire movie as well as a comic book movie.

Minus its poor critical reception, Venom put Sony in just about the best position possible for its Spider-Verse to succeed. Hopefully Venom's performance will embolden Sony to make interesting creative choices with the rest of this universe, upping the quality and giving us something different than the MCU and DCEU. But it is important to distinguish what Venom's success does and doesn't mean, and while the future is promising for the symbiote, the fortunes of Sony's Spider-Verse at large remain unknown.

There are no Sony Spider-Verse (SSV?) movies next year but you won't be wanting for comic book properties as 2019 is chock full of them. Check out all of next year's biggest movies in our 2019 Release Schedule.

It's funny that you think Sony would ever give the rights back in any scenario other than Disney buying Sony. They're about to make Into the Spider-verse and it's a really good movie. They just came out with one of the greatest PS4 games of the year with Spider-man. They're making bank. They will never give Spider-man back.

Afterwards, Sony will ultimately decide what to do, but given that Holland will still be pretty popular critically and within the GA, I think the smart move would be to rearrange another deal with Marvel Studios, or for once resell every Spider-verse characters to MS. It really depends on the success of their upcoming movies.

The Scarface Remake Just Hit Another Setback, But Its Not All Bad News

The Scarface Remake Just Hit Another Setback, But Its Not All Bad News

When last we heard word about the Scarface remake's development, David Ayer had vacated the director's chair, with the film still dated for an August 10, 2018 release date. Well, we've received an update on just where Scarface is with its production, and it's a bit of a step backward, as the film is now officially undated and off of Universal's 2018 schedule. However, the silver lining in this development is that a key player is back in talks to possibly take the director's chair: Antoine Fuqua himself!

To circle back in the project's history, it was Fuqua that was involved with the initial phases of the third iteration of Scarface as a producer and director on the project. However, he eventually dropped out due to production on The Equalizer 2 kicking into gear. This lead to Ayer boarding the project, which lasted until the director parted ways after pitching a darker script than Universal wanted to produce, and/or had to devote his time and energy to Netflix's Bright. Either way, it looks like Scarface is temporarily stalled out, but only for the best reasons.

Considering Scarface has a screenplay that currently has Joel and Ethan Coen's names attached to it, you don't want to just throw a director into the chair and expect them to make magic. With that said, there's also a chance that Antoine Fuqua's possible re-involvement in this new tale of a criminal's rise to power will require another re-write in order to fully be realized as a Fuqua-supported project. So naturally, that possibility will take some time, and as almost any writer will tell you, being able to draft without a release date is a godsend.

All this being said, there's one more problem that Deadline mentioned as rearing its head, and that's the status of current lead actor Diego Luna's schedule. With this new retooling phase to Scarface, there's a chance that Luna's schedule won't allow him to fully commit to the lead role he'd been considering. But again, with this new shake up on the film's production staff, there could be enough time built in to secure a new lead should the Rogue One actor find himself unable to participate.

If there was any sort of educated guess one could make to when Scarface would re-date itself for release, I'd say some point in either 2020 or 2021 would be the most likely. With the project feeling like a moderate priority for Universal, and its 2021 calendar already starting to form with Jurassic World 3's June 11slot, it wouldn't be surprising to see the studio staking out some other dates in the meantime. Whatever that date may be, and whether or not Antoine Fuqua lands the director's chair for Scarface again, we'll keep you updated here at CinemaBlend when the news breaks.

In the meantime, you'll be able to see Fuqua and Denzel Washington team up for some more ass kicking when The Equalizer 2 explodes into theaters on July 20th. To see what other films will be competing for your box office dollar, as well as what's coming up throughout the year, head over to our 2018 release schedule for further details.
