Disney Just Got A Win In Lawsuit Against Redbox

The Disney legal department seems to be about as busy as any other division of the company, but like the rest of the organization, it's good at what it does. We have another example of this in a judge's decision to grant a preliminary injunction against Redbox in the on-going dispute over the resale of digital movie codes. Although, to be fair, it did take Disney two tries to get this victory.

The dispute between Disney and Redbox stems from the latter company purchasing Disney "Combo Packs," Blu-Ray discs that include a digital download code for the same film, and then reselling the code to consumers at a discount compared to what purchasing a digital movie from Disney would cost. While the code specifically stated it was not for sale or transfer, Redbox argued that under the first sale doctrine it had the right to do with the code what they wished because they purchased it legally. The judge eventually ruled in favor of Redbox, writing that Disney's restrictive licensing terms constituted a misuse of copyright.

However, Disney went back and changed the language in its combo packs and the terms of use on the digital movie redemption site. Basically, if you redeem a digital code for a Disney movie now you are agreeing to a set of terms and conditions that includes the provision that digital codes may not be sold separately. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this was enough to get the judge to rule in Disney's favor. Redbox is now enjoined from selling Disney digital codes.

The change in language began with the Blu-ray release of Black Panther and Redbox has made it clear that, while it will not resell digital codes for that film, in fact, Redbox states it never tried to sell Black Panther codes, but that it will continue to resell codes to earlier films that don't use the current language. Essentially, Redbox believes the ruling doesn't actually impact the company, since it'll continue to sell the codes to the previous films and won't start selling codes to movies they already weren't selling.

This is clearly a big win for both Disney and the traditional channels through which one can purchase a digital movie, like iTunes or Amazon. Disney's digital movies traditionally sell for $19.99 through those outlets, making the films a little on the high side price wise compared to many. It's likely part of the reason why purchasing discounted codes through Redbox was so attractive to consumers, and why Disney wanted to shut it down.

This is a preliminary injunction, so it's possible Redbox could come back and try to fight it if the company can find a new angle from which to make an argument.

John Krasinski Sobbed Uncontrollably Watching Emily Blunt In Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns will feature the revival of an iconic Disney movie character. As such, it was always going to have a nostalgic factor for fans, but for John Krasinski, that factor was ramped up to the point where he sobbed uncontrollably while watching the movie. He recently revealed to Ellen DeGeneres on Ellen,

The first time I saw it, they give you a tissue box in the screening room, and I thought, 'Oh, that's very nice. I don't have a cold. And they started screening the movie and 25 minutes into the movie, I stood up and went to the back of the room.

John Krasinksi is married to Emily Blunt, who plays the new version of the popular nanny in Mary Poppins Returns. So, not only did he get to see Mary Poppins' debut early and not only did that debut tap into his earlier memories, but he also was seeing his wife master the role on the big screen. It was a lot to take in. Cue the tears.

According to Krasinksi, things got so bad during the viewing that he humorously went through an entire box of tissues before wildly searching around the room for other objects that could contain his tears and sniffles.

Emily said, 'Do you not like it? I've never seen this happen? I was pushing through all of the muffins and bagels that were in the back looking for napkins. I was like, 'I need anything to stop this crying!' I was crying so much I blew through the tissue box in 20 minutes, had to go to the napkins, and then when I ran out of napkins it was all sweater.

He also told Ellen that beyond the sobbing he kept having emotional moments where he'd murmur between tears things like "Oh it's so beautiful." While this humorous rendition of his viewing experience may not be exactly accurate, the sentiment is there.

In fact, John Krasinski isn't the only person who has cried in relation to Mary Poppins Returns. We previously learned director Rob Marshall totally lost it when Dick Van Dyke was filming his scenes for the movies.

Later on in the interview, the amused actor also joked about Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins performance not being her best, and if you want to catch the whole jokey segment, you can head to EllenTube.

If you've seen any of the trailers, musical moment videos or other footage for Mary Poppins Returns that Disney has sent out to the public, you may have gotten a glimpse of the emotional way the company has brought the new story to life on the big screen. From nods to the original via the cockney accent of Lin-Manuel Miranda's new Jack character and animated sequences and more, the new movie will pay homage to the Disney classic. Seemingly that means it should also bring forth lots of feelings in its viewership.

We'll just have to wait and see exactly how popular Mary Poppins Returns ends up being in theaters. You can catch it with your own eyes starting on December 19, 2018. Just be sure to bring your own tissues. Sadly, they won't be given out with the price of admission.

Colin Farrell Loved The Dumbo Sets So Much He Spent Extra Time Just Wandering Around

Few auteurs have made as big an impact on modern cinema than Tim Burton. The filmmakers style is identifiable from a mile away, and its a specific aesthetic that has driven some of the most visually interesting features to be released in the last 35 years. His work possesses many charms, including a wonderful practicality, and its that particular element of Burtons filmmaking process that really boggled the mind of Colin Farrell in the making of Dumbo.

Unlike many of the stars of the new Disney film (including Eva Green, Danny DeVito, and Michael Keaton), Colin Farrell didnt have the experience of working with Tim Burton prior to the making of the new live-action adaptation, but that just meant that the entire experience was brand new to him. This was something that he very much reveled in during production, as he recently told me about how he would actually spend extra time on set when nobody was around, taking it all in. Discussing his expectations for working with Burton, Farrell explained,

I expected... My mind is not potent enough to have expected the degree of elaborateness that was present on the sets of this film. But I knew that it would be elaborate, and I knew that it would be big, and I knew that it would be beautiful, and colorful, and noisy. But I had no idea. And when I saw some of the sets, I mean they were just the most beautiful, you know? I'd find myself walking on to the sets when there was nobody there and just looking around.

Colin Farrell wore his appreciation for the beauty of Tim Burtons Dumbo on his sleeve when I had the opportunity to sit down with him earlier this month during the new films Los Angeles press junket. During the interview he mentioned that he had met the director years before making the new movie specifically they had a chat while drinking coffee poolside at the Roosevelt Hotel (dont you just love Hollywood?) but that meeting apparently didnt fully prepare the actor for the experience of collaborating with the filmmaker. So when he arrived and saw the massive, practical, and colorful sets that had been built for the live-action adaptation of the Disney animated classic, he was really blown away.

There are some actors who cant get off set fast enough when they are done with a day of production on a movie, but that most definitely wasnt the case for Colin Farrell in the making of Dumbo. Instead, he found that the experience of being alone on the massive circus sets that had been built overwhelmed him with emotions particularly a thankfulness that he has a life that allows him to be a part of beautiful art. Said Farrell,

And talk about moments of nostalgia! Even though I didn't have relationship with Dumbo or circuses, it's just honestly a lot of gratitude, actually, for living in such a beautiful world, and being a part of telling a story, albeit for a finite moment in time.

In Dumbo, Colin Farrell stars as Holt Farrier, a circus performer who we first meet at the start of the story when he returns from fighting in World War I. He is beyond elated to once again be with his two children, Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins), but hes also not quite the man he used to be, as an injury sustained during battle led to him losing his left arm. He does his best to try and return his life to what it was before he left, but finds challenges from his disability. Its a scary and hard time, but optimism soon arrives in the form of a young elephant with ears so big that they allow it to fly.

The seventeenth film from Tim Burton, and also starring Alan Arkin in addition to all the names mentioned above, Dumbo will soon be arriving in theaters scheduled to land on March 29th.
