How Disneyland's Star Tours Inspired The Last Jedi

The new Star Wars trilogy has been taking many cues from the film's that preceded it. However, it turns out that one element of Star Wars: The Last Jedi actually owes its existence to a Star Wars theme park attraction. Near the end of the movie, during the battle on the planet Crait, we follow the Millennium Falcon as it is chased by a squad of TIE Fighters into a fissure in the planet's surface. In one of the special features included in the Digital release of The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson says the sequence was actually inspired by a similar sequence in the original version of Disneyland's Star Tours attraction. According to Johnson...

And that section where you're flying through these red crystal caverns was kind of inspired by, for me at least, the original Star Tours ride. The very original one where you're going through the comet and you smash out the ice cave at the end.

Star Tours went through a major overhaul that drastically changed the ride starting in 2011, so the original version of the attraction is no longer available to experience, but it involved a tourist transport that was supposed to visit the forest moon of Endor, but got misdirected due to an inexperienced pilot, voiced by Pee-Wee Herman himself, Paul Reubens. After accidentally flying right past Endor, the craft found itself surrounded by comets, and gets struck by several before actually being trapped inside of one. The ship has to weave its way through the icy interior of the comet before it crashes through the wall and escapes.

Today, Star Tours has several, randomly generated, experiences, so guests can travel to several different planets and experience many different rides. This has also allowed Disney Parks to add new experiences to the ride as new Star Wars films have been released. In a humorous coincidence, Crait is the planet that was added to the attraction from The Last Jedi and the ride actually does fly through the crystal cavern, an irony not lost on Rian Johnson.

To see it all come full circle and be in a Star Tours ride. That was pretty cool.

One of the great things about Disneyland and Walt Disney World is that they're always working on new things to keep the parks fresh, however, that also means that older attractions go away, likely never to be seen again. However, thanks to Star Tours inspiring The Last Jedi, and vice versa, fans can now at least experience something very like the original version of the ride.

With Disney Parks about a year away from adding an entire new planet to the Star Wars universe with the new Galaxy's Edge land, I wonder how it might inspire future Star Wars movies, assuming of course that the land isn't already being designed with future movies in mind. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now available via Digital and will be released on Blu-ray March 27.

How Oceans 8 Got All Those Celebrity Cameos

One of the hot button issues in the entertainment world is the subject of proper inclusion and representation in the media. There has been a particular call for racial diversity and more dynamic roles for women, and that's exactly what upcoming heist film Ocean's 8 is going to provide. Director Gary Ross has assembled a fantastic cast of women to carry on the Ocean's franchise, with positive buzz surrounding the all-star group of actresses. Aside from the main cast, there are also a ton of celebrities making cameos as guests at the Met Gala. The cameos include the likes of Olivia Munn, Anna Wintour, and The Kardashians, and Ross recently told me how he managed such A-list extras with Ocean's 8.

We had a whole plan. At the Met Gala, all those people are famous, right? So I have an expectation on me to have famous extras, and that's not easy. We realized these people wouldn't come and be normal extras in a holding pen for eight hours. So we created a club upstairs in The Met in their member's dining room at night. We called it 'Club Oceans' and it was a party of all famous people hanging out, having a good time. And when we needed an extra we'd go upstairs and we'd pull someone out. There were cartier jewels that they could all put on and wear. There was good food. So they all got to go to a party.

Well, that's one way to get celebs in the room. While being a background actor isn't exactly glamorous, providing celebs with libations and designer jewelry is a great way to get them involved.

Ocean's 8 is set at the annual Met Gala, with Sandra Bullock's Debbie Ocean and her crew attempting to steal Cartier jewels worth $150 million. The Met Gala is the most exclusive party in the world, and anyone who is anyone attends the annual event, while wearing theatrical couture. In order for the big heist scene to function believably, Gary Ross needed to book some A-list talent as the party guests. And that's exactly what he did.

The trailers for Ocean's 8 features some of the movie's cameos, and there plenty of them. The movie will feature three members of the Kardashian/Jenner clan: Kim, Kylie, and Kendall. Anna Witnour is no doubt going to be heavily featured as the host of the event, while the extended cast also includes Zayn Malik, Serena Williams, Alexander Wang, and Katie Holmes. While the upcoming movie will be focused on the intricate heist, an added game for the audience will be identifying the myriad cameos throughout the film's conclusion.

Green Book Has The Worst Rotten Tomatoes Score For A Best Picture Winner Since Crash

The Academy Awards gave its Best Picture award to Green Book on Sunday night and, as per usual, a lot of people have a lot of different opinions about that. However, if the criticism of the decision seems a bit harsher than usual, that's not actually all that surprising, as Green Book is the worst Best Picture winner since 2004's Crash according to film critics.

Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes lists Green Book with a cumulative score of 79%, which may not seem all that low, but no winner of Best Picture at the Oscars has had a score so low since the 74% score that Crash received.

Now, of course, critics are only one subset of the movie going public and critics and the general public don't always agree. Green Book has a 93% audience score on the same site and Crash has an 88% score, showing that a lot of people feel very differently about these movies compared to critics.

Still, the lukewarm critic reaction, as mentioned by The Insider, is certainly telling. Most of the time the Best Picture winner is a movie that critics like a lot more. In fact, the numbers tend to go more in the opposite direction. The previous two Best Picture winners, The Shape of Water and Moonlight saw a Rotten Tomatoes critic score up in the 90s, while the audience score was down in the 70s.

In fact, Green Book has the highest audience rating of any of the Best Picture nominees. While it was only the fourth highest grossing film of the eight films nominated, so fewer people saw the movie than saw Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody or A Star is Born, but more people who saw it liked it.

It makes one wonder if part of Green Book's success was part of the Academy's very public attempts to make the awards feel more accessible to the viewing audience. Generally, the movies that win at the Oscars are the movies that audiences don't care so much about. Perhaps Green Book was the compromise choice, as it was popular with many moviegoers, while still being an "awards movie."

I mean, it could have been worse. Green Book wasn't even the lowest rated Best Picture nominee according to critics. Vice has a 66% Rotten Tomatoes score and Bohemian Rhapsody is at 61%. The Queen biopic did much better wit audiences, though critics and audiences are more or less in agreement on their mediocre opinion on Vice.

We'll have to wait and see whether Green Book's win signals a shift in Oscar voting or is more of an anomaly. Crash certainly wasn't a referendum on the Oscars as things went back to more or less the status quo the following year. We'll be back here in 12 months to figure that out.
