Michael B. Jordan's Superman Movie Idea Could Actually Be A Cool DC Project

Its a weird time for Superman on film right now. Following his resurrection in Justice League, there are no plans to bring the Man of Steel back to the DC Extended Universe anytime soon, and last year it was reported that Henry Cavill was leaving the role behind. Warner Bros has stayed cagey about whats in store for Superman, and shortly after this Cavill rumor broke, it was also said that Michael B. Jordan was being looked at to fill the Kryptonian heros shoes. Cut to earlier this month, Jordan said that if he were to play Superman, he would rather be the Calvin Ellis version rather than Clark Kent. That could actually make for an interesting project, because not only would make for a much different kind of Superman movie than were used to seeing, but theres already a precedent for delivering an Elseworlds-like story to moviegoers.

Before going further, for those of you who dont know who Calvin Ellis is, he is the Superman of Earth-23, one of the many alternate realities that populate the DC Comics multiverse. Created by writer Grant Morrison and artist Doug Mahnke, the first chunk of Calvins life basically plays out the same way as Clark Kents. Born Kalel on the planet Krypton, he was sent to Earth by his parents as an infant before his homeworld exploded. Kalel was found by the Ellis couple and named Calvin. Just like Clark Kent, he gains incredible powers from Earths yellow sun and was raised to use these powers to protect the innocent both on our world and around the universe. But the main thing that separates Calvin Ellis from Clark Kent is as an adult, Calvin is also the president of the United States. So along with helping people as a superhero, Calvin also works on the political front to do that, using a reprogrammed Brainiac to cover for him when he has to put on the cape.

Thus far, Calvin Ellis has appeared in comic books stories like Final Crisis and The Multiversity, but he has yet to lead his own series. Nevertheless, theres enough interesting material available to build the skeleton of a cinematic story, allowing for a screenwriter and filmmaker to then come in and leave their own creative stamps. The result: a standalone Superman movie quite different than what weve gotten the last six times, plus Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

As great as it would be to see Henry Cavill return for Man of Steel 2, we have no idea when, or even if, that will happen. In the meantime, Michael B. Jordan, whos already a huge star thanks to the Creed movies, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther and more, has a first-look deal with Warner Bros, which will see him starring in features like Just Mercy. Clearly he has a good relationship with the studio, so Warner Bros would have an easier time signing him onto such a major blockbuster (when hes not busy playing John Clark at Paramount). After all, Jordan has plenty of experience in the comic book realm and has clearly proven he can lead a franchise. Being the Calvin Ellis Superman could be his most impactful genre role yet.

Plus, as I mentioned earlier, Warner Bros has already expressed an interest in making outside the box DC movies. Look at the upcoming Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix. Not only is it set outside of the DC Extended Universe (hence why were not seeing Jared Leto playing the Clown Prince of Crime), but its also clearly quite comfortable with not following the established source material closely. Rather than transforming into The Joker during a confrontation with Batman, Phoenixs Arthur Fleck will adopt his sinister clown persona in 1981, when Bruce Wayne is still a boy and both his parents are still alive. Behind the scenes, Joker reportedly had a budget of around $55 million, as this movie is intended to be more of a character study rather than a major spectacle like what we normally get from comic book movies. Director Todd Phillips and writer Scott Silver, while taking some cues from the comics, are telling a Joker story that is free from the need to stay faithful to traditional depictions.

This is the same approach a Calvin Ellis Superman movie would take, although obviously the budget would need to be bigger than $55 million. Instead of exploring the story of Clark Kent fighting crime, reporting for The Daily Planet and building a relationship with Lois Lane that weve seen numerous times already, Michael B. Jordans Superman movie would show Calvin Ellis balancing his superhero duties with his responsibilities as U.S. President. Even with his powers and an alien A.I. helping him out, its safe to say thats stressful, and who knows if Calvin even has time to have a social life on the side. Maybe Calvin also struggles with what job of his does the more good, and if dedicating too much time doing one of them hampers the effectiveness of the other. Thats an incredibly compelling narrative to delve into.

And just because this would be a Superman movie doesnt mean other superheroes couldnt appear. Earth-23 has its own Justice League, so why not bring them into the fold as well? Its extremely unlikely that an entire Earth-23 franchise would ever be made, so while Superman would be the star of the show, it would be great to see him fighting alongside his frequent allies, many of whom are black versions of traditionally white DC heroes.

For right now, Calvin Ellis making his big screen debut is just an idea that Michael B. Jordan thought up, but its an idea that DC and Warner Bros should seriously considering hashing out. Just like Joker and a Batman Beyond movie, a Earth-23 Superman movie would be a good way to give audiences a different kind of superhero movie that doesnt interfere with whats happening in the DCEU. Michael B. Jordan and Superman can both bring in the big bucks individually, so even though such a Superman movie would be quite different from what weve gotten before, thats also the key to making it unique. If theres one thing that moviegoers crave, its stories theyve never seen before told well. And explosions. Those dont hurt either.

New Deadpool 2 Footage Is Full Of Sex Jokes And Action

Deadpool 2 marketing has, for the most part, avoided showing us a lot of the movie by focusing its trailers on Ryan Reynolds just being funny, but we finally have our first look at an uninterrupted scene in the movie, and it's vintage Deadpool. The scene was shown earlier this week when Zazie Beets was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live. While technically Domino is the focus of the scene, Deadpool is there to insert his unique humor, "accidentally" comparing an attack on an armored truck to a graphic sex act. Check it out.

We see what looks like a convoy of vehicles on a city street as Domino drops into one truck and takes out the driver. At which point, Cable arrives. We learn that the kid that Deadpool is trying to protect is somewhere in the convoy. Deadpool makes a crack about Domino's "non-existent powers" because she just happens to be incredibly lucky, which DP has scoffed at in previous trailers. Then Cable attacks the truck and Deadpool runs the play-by-play from a scooter in the back describing Cable as "coming in from the back" before "being inside."

Of course, the scene isn't too vulgar because the clip is being shown on broadcast TV, but the original Deadpool did not shy away from the graphic sex jokes, or even just the graphic sex, so we can probably rest assured that the sequel will double down on all of it.

In addition to being funny, the sequence has some great action showing Zazie Beets kicking some ass in what is clearly just a small part of a larger action scene. With several new characters joining Deadpool 2 there should be lots of fun new action to experience and lots of new targets for Deadpool's particular brand of humor.

As mentioned, there's actually quite a bit about Deadpool 2 that we don't know and haven't seen. While the promotion of Deadpool 2 has been going on practically since the end credits of the first movie, most of what we've seen has just been clips of Ryan Reynolds being hilarious, like the "trailer" placed before Logan or bits of Deadpool playing with action figures or dressed as Bob Ross, which filled out the trailers, allowing them to get away with putting less of the actual movie on display.

While Deadpool 2 has a road to the big screen that was nearly as rocky as the first film, we'll finally get to see the complete movie when it releases on May 18. While the film is currently tracking toward an opening weekend slightly behind its predecessor, there are clearly plenty of people who are still looking forward to seeing the Merc with a Mouth once again.

Barely two week in theaters and Avengers: Infinity War is already on the verge of being the highest grossing superhero movie ever made. Everyone is talking about the movie, whether it's about that ending, the excellent action, or the incredibly fun character pairings. In the case of the latter, one of the best combinations of characters is Doctor Strange and Tony Stark, two men of massive egos who routinely butt heads with each other. It's a fun use of the two characters, but the pairing is actually inspired by an unlikely source: the TV show Frasier.

Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had a colossal task in front of them: writing the script to Avengers: Infinity War, combining 18 movies worth of characters and storylines into a single movie. If you've seen the movie then you know they did a pretty great job at this task, and must have had a blast coming up with the character pairings. Originally, the duo planned to keep Doctor Strange and Tony Stark separate because they were so similar, but realized they should share the screen for the same reason. As Markus tells it,

To take Tony and Dr. Strange, who are quite similar --- they both have goatees, they're both arrogant --- the impulse might be, 'Well, let's keep them separate because they occupy the same space, and everyone will get their own Arrogant Goatee Man. But to put them together, one, is funny, and their powers are totally different. But also it helps Tony go, 'Wow, arrogant people are really annoying ... I'm arrogant, huh.' This is how we become better people in life.

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that they were inspired to keep their two most arrogant characters together by the TV show Frasier. The writing duo explains that most shows would have created a brother who was the exact opposite of the intelligent but arrogant Frasier Krane (Kelsey Grammer). However, the Emmy-winning Frasier used David Hyde Pierce's Dr. Niles Crane, a sibling who was "even more like Frasier than Frasier." This allowed Fraiser to see how annoying he could be, creating character growth, and Markus and McFeely wanted to do the same for Stark.

The Doctor Strange and Iron Man pairing is definitely a highlight of Infinity War, giving us all just one more reason to be thankful for the existence of Frasier.
