What Vin Diesels Bloodshot Learned From The Superhero Genre

What Vin Diesels Bloodshot Learned From The Superhero Genre

Bloodshot is a comic book character many films fans won't be familiar with, but the upcoming film adaptation believes it can be successful by taking lessons from all the comic book movies that have come before it. Bloodshot's co-creator Bob Layton recently spoke about the Vin Diesel led film version of his character, and he says that all the previous comic book movies that have come out have shown that the key to making a good comic book movie is character, not action. According to Layton...

I'm going to put it very succinctly: character, character, character. It's not about big fight scenes. It's not about giant tentpole stuff. The thing that really makes superheroes resonate is character. Tony Stark in the first Iron Man film was so true to the spirit of that character and we care about him because we come to love Tony, warts and all. That's so important for superhero movies. In the case of Bloodshot, they're really focusing on Vin's character and it really seems to be a more character-driven movie, rather than just a lot of big explosions and 9/11-style building demolitions. The most boring part of superhero films to me are the pornographic, giant fight scenes that take up the entire third act. That's not entertainment, it's just a giant amusement park ride on film.

Bob Layton knows a thing on two about the spirit of Iron Man's character as he worked on the comic book for Marvel for several years. Layton points out that the reason Iron Man works as a superhero is because, first, Tony Stark worked as a person. We came to relate with Stark, which meant that we were along for the ride when the wild stuff started to happen. It seems that the team behind Bloodshot, like Vin Diesel and producer Neal Moritz, are taking that to heart.

There's little denying accuracy of Bob Layton's comments to Deadline. Superhero movies are no different than any other movies in that regard. No matter how out of this world the comic book creation might be, they still have to be somebody the audience can empathize with, or the story is hollow.

And Bloodshot certainly has the potential for a very interesting story to be told. It hits similar beats to the Winter Soldier in the MCU. Bloodshot is a super soldier who has been programmed and controlled to be used as a weapon. Eventually, Bloodshot finds freedom, but with his memory having been scrambled by those who created him, including having false memories created as a motivation tool, he doesn't really know who he is. There's absolutely some real character development that can be done with a story like that.

Bob Layton specifically says he doesn't like the action-filled third act that ends pretty much every superhero movie to date. One has to wonder if there's a plan to do something else. It would be nice to see a superhero movie try something different, not that I have the first clue what in the world that would be. While the massive action sequences might not be the part of comic book movies that makes them great, it is one part that undeniably makes them fun. It's not like we don't want any of it.

The Bloodshot movie is currently in production and is set for release in February of 2020.

Well, if actor Vin Diesel is to be believed, there are chances that Sony might even lead the charge of superhero movies of the future and their upcoming project Bloodshot could play a big role in it. Diesel is all set to play Ray Garrison aka Bloodshot in Sony's adaptation of the Valiant comic of the same name.

Someone Cut Together Infinity War's Trailers Into Chronological Order, And Wow

Despite releasing two very highly demanded trailers, Avengers: Infinity War has been keeping its cards close to its chest. While fans likely have some idea about how things play out, that's really only worth a vague synopsis at best. The true meat of the plot is a mystery, which has only led one fan to pour over all the available footage for the epic film and place it into what he believes is chronological order. Is he right? We'll know on April 27, but see for yourself if you think this is how Infinity War will play out.

I'm going to go ahead and throw up a quick SPOILER WARNING here. This uses most of the released footage -- including TV spots -- so if you want to go into the theater blind, bookmark this page and come back in a month!

The marketing for blockbuster movies has gotten a lot more secretive over the years, with the bigger films like Star Wars showing only the bare minimum of footage. Avengers: Infinity War is following suit and really hasn't revealed the bulk of its story. This has led YouTube editor/detective JohnnyB2K to take all the footage released so far and place it in chronological order -- or his opinion of it, at least.

It's an interesting idea of how Infinity War plays out, though, I'm not sure I agree with all of it. I doubt that Thor's storyline of meeting the Guardians of the Galaxy and then going on his mission happens entirely at the beginning of the movie and THEN cuts to the Earth people. The movie will likely jump back and forth between all these stories, but that's a hard thing to predict perfectly with just trailer footage. It should also be noted that this editor did the same thing with Captain America: Civil War trailers and that got some key parts wrong, as well.

That doesn't mean it's not a fun video! It's cool to see how many different ways there are to interpret the same footage. People are clearly excited to see this movie, judging by the 161 million views for the original trailer, and anything to help pass the time, like a Deadpool-ized trailer, is deeply appreciated.

We'll all see how close this video was when the real deal finally hits theaters in less than one month on April 27, 2018. To learn more about Avengers: Infinity War before seeing the blockbuster, here's everything we know so far. For all the other Marvel movies that are heading to theaters soon, here's our Marvel movie guide. Believe it or not, there are plenty of other, non-Marvel movies coming to theaters this year. You can check them all out right here at our 2018 movie release schedule.

Captain Marvel Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The Newest Marvel Movie

Captain Marvel Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The Newest Marvel Movie

There have been a lot of expectations for Marvel Studios newest project. Captain Marvel is the first female-led movie from the House of Ideas, which, in the opinion of nearly everybody, is long over due. But has it been worth the wait? Many of us at CinemaBlend have had the chance to see the film and, as per usual, we have a lot of opinions on the topic. Eric Eisenberg wrote the official review for Captain Marvel. He gave the movie four out of five stars and felt the movie was largely the exciting adventure it needed to be, that largely overcomes the manb hurdles set before it. According to the review.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel is absolutely a blockbuster to which the industry should look as it's doing its part to try and reinvent the wheel, and while doing so serving up a fantastic hero debut within a spectacular and twist-filled, 1990s-set adventure.

While Eric largely thought that Captain Marvel did a great job of being a fresh take at the superhero origin story, that's not to say the film completely avoids every ptfall and trope that comes with it. CinemaBlend writer Sarah El-Mahmoud largely loved the movie as well, but felt that ultimately, the film was a lot of setup for a payoff that has yet to come. Of course, when that payoff comes in any potential sequel, she'll almost certainly be there.

Captain Marvel is the '90s action flick that was missing from my (Disney princess-filled) childhood but better late than never! Brie Larson's Carol Danvers is an unapologetic badass, Sam Jackson's young Nick Fury & Goose the cat have stolen my heart & Lashana Lynch (!!!) There's tons to love about this one & but I was left finding it to be a bit incomplete on its own by the end. It's an origin story that screams sequel!

While Captain Marvel is the last movie before Avengers: Endgame ends many stories of the MCU, it actually takes place prior to the vast majority of them. It's a "period piece" because apparently something taking place in the 90s counts as a period piece now (get off my lawn). This means it gives us new insight into the larger MCU with a look at an era we hadn't seen before. Marketing Editor Adrienne Jones enjoyed the flashback to Marvel's past, and also the cat, of course.

Captain Marvel gives us a fun, action-packed look at the MCU's past that we didn't know we needed. While some of the effects come off as a bit cartoony, this is a great superhero debut from Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson shows us an enjoyable new side to Nick Fury and Goose the cat will not soon be forgotten.

While there are clearly elements that everybody at CinemaBlend enjoyed about Captain Marvel, the fact is that nearly every Marvel movie qualifies as "pretty good" and with the bar now set as high as it is, it's hard for anybody to clear it. CinemaBlend News Director Jessica Rawden was expecting a lot more than she got.

Captain Marvel has some mild laughs, it has some fun action sequences and it has a cat that gets plenty of screen time (if that's your thing). Regardless, its missing the energy, creativity and fun with tone a lot of the better Marvel movies have, and its story is super paint-by-numbers. I didnt leave feeling disappointed, exactly, but I expected more from a character and a movie that had the privilege of taking us to the past while setting up for the MCU of the future. Maybe it was too large of a request. Nothing about Captain Marvel is inherently bad, its just fine, forgettable fluff.

One certainly begins to wonder if marvel is becoming a victim of its own success. Back when the first Iron Man came out, nobody was necessarily expecting it to be revolutionary. The fact that it was good was enough. Now, fans are clearly expecting not just good, but great. Iron Man largely follows the same origin story formula, but since there's wasn't a decade of movies preceding it, nobody was too upset by that. Now, audiences have seen this sort of story before, and there's an expectation to do something different, or at the very least, better.

Having said that, CinemaBlend Editor Adam Holmes seems to accepted the film for what it is, and enjoyed what it brought to the table.

While predictable at times, Captain Marvel is nonetheless an enjoyable watch. It wisely balances its '90s setting with cosmic action, and it did a solid job of setting up Carol Danvers as one of the new leading heroes going forward in the MCU. Samuel L. Jackson also gave a delightful performance as a younger, less cynical Nick Fury, and, of course, Goose the Cat is an absolute treasure. Captain Marvel isn't one of the MCU's most exceptional movies, but it definitely delivers on entertainment.

CB Project Manager Cody Beck is another that was ultimately expecting something more. In addition, he felt Captain Marvel had some pretty rough dialogue and visual effects that really weren't quite up to what we expect from the Oscar nominated Marvel Studios. Also, did we mention the cat was great?

Captain Marvel was a fun ride, but with cookie cutter storytelling. The messages are positive and the exposition abundant, but some of the dialogue used to deliver both is cringeworthy at best. Definitely not my favorite MCU entry, but also not my least favorite. Some of the de-aging and visual special effects didnt seem quite up to par with other huge superhero blockbusters, but Id go again just to see Samuel L Jackson and that scene-stealin', crazy cat.

The superhero origin story is something we've seen countless times before, including many different times from Marvel Studios. At this point, many are just tired of seeing the same formula play out over and over, and it does need to be said Captain Marvel, while it structures the origin in a unique and interesting way, still hits most of the same beats you're probably expecting. Having said that, I actually really enjoy origin stories for exactly those reasons.

I actually love origin story movies because there's nothing quite like that building of anticipation toward "the moment." It can only happen once. Captain Marvel makes you wait. Some things are worth the wait.

If there's a general consensus among CinemaBlend, it's that Captain Marvel is, well, a fun superhero movie. While there was once a time when that was all anybody asked for, and many might still be ok with it, if you were hoping for an Avengers level epic, then you may need to wait until the next actual Avengers movie. Captain Marvel is in theaters now.

James Gunn Reportedly Could've Directed A Superman Movie Instead Of The Suicide Squad

James Gunn Reportedly Could've Directed A Superman Movie Instead Of The Suicide Squad

Earlier this week, Warner Bros.' DCEU line-up for 2021 was announced, including DC Super Pets, Matt Reeves' The Batman (which will not star Ben Affleck after all), and The Suicide Squad. The latter will officially be helmed by writer/director James Gunn. Gunn was notoriously fired by Disney/Marvel for decade-old insensitive tweets, leaving Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with no director.

Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that when Warner Bros. initially approached James Gunn, the studio offered the filmmaker his pick of DC properties, including the option to helm a Superman project. Per the report, Gunn never seriously considered taking on the Man of Steel, though he did research the comics and took a liking to the superhero's dog Krypto.

The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker ultimately decided to tackle the follow-up of David Ayer's Suicide Squad. James Gunn has a unique vision to "relaunch" the franchise, including casting a mostly fresh band of misfits for the project.

This news certainly is characteristic of Warner Bros.' passion to bring James Gunn on the DCEU side after ties were abruptly cut with Marvel Studios. The Guardians of the Galaxy cast made it clear they wanted the filmmaker to stay on for the third MCU film, but Disney wasn't budging.

What would have James Gunn done with the Man of Steel franchise? Considering his upcoming producing project Brightburn subverts the Superman story, his decision to pass on it and work on The Suicide Squad makes sense. The upcoming release is about a superpowered alien boy brought up by human parents on a farm, though as he grows into his powers, he becomes violent and unstoppable.

If James Gunn had decided to work on a Superman movie with Warner Bros., we would certainly have a clearer understanding of the future of Henry Cavills Kal-El. In September, rumored fluttered about the actors exit as the character, though the studio responded by explaining that they hadn't yet made a decision about any upcoming Superman films.

James Gunn's decision to work on Suicide Squad isn't a surprising one, considering the franchise is in similar territory to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Both stories are about unlikely heroes with criminal pasts who come together to save the world. It's a natural transition for the director, especially if he had some themes or ideas in his head for Guardians that he can now work into The Suicide Squad. Plus, he's tried to make peace between Marvel and DC fans in the past, so maybe this is his opportunity to bridge the two worlds in his own way.

The writer/director's affection for Krypto is also on brand for James Gunn, since he was central in making Bradley Cooper's Rocket the Raccoon a lovable big screen character.

James Gunns The Suicide Squad will be released on August 6, 2021, shortly after DC Super Pets is released on May 21 and The Batman comes out on June 25 in 2021.

James Gunn almost directed a new Superman movie before joining The Suicide Squad. The former creative lead of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise hasn't been officially confirmed to helm The Suicide Squad just yet - which is more a reboot than a sequel - but Gunn is penning the script, and it's possible he might ultimately end up in the director's chair.

Gunn does seem better suited for Suicide Squad (though he is best suited for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 but that is a different story), however it does make you wonder what his Superman movie would feel like. It would definitely have a light comedic and possibly hopeful tone, which I think is something a Superman movie desperately needs.
