DCs Aquaman Trailer Is Full Of Atlantean Awesomeness

Aquaman has been one of the most prominent superheroes in the DC Comics universe, even if he hasn't always gotten the same level of respect as the likes of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. 2016 marked a new era for the water-swelling vigilante, though, as Jason Momoa cameoed as the cinematic Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Following his full debut in Justice League, Momoa's Aquaman is returning to the silver screen this winter for his own movie, and now the first Aquaman trailer for the underwater adventure has finally arrived! Check it out, below.

Justice League briefly touched on Arthur Curry's past, but for those unfamiliar with the comics, the first Aquaman trailer does a good job at laying out his origin story. His mother was an Atlantean queen named Atlanna (Nicole Kidman) and his father was a lighthouse keeper named Thomas (Temuera Morrison), and much to the surprise of.. well, pretty much everyone, he learned he can control marine life. Fast forward to the present, Arthur's taken it upon himself to take out armed goons aboard a submarine, and from there, we get into the meat of the preview. Arthur's half-brother Orm, better known in the comics as Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson), wants to declare war on the surface, thus requiring Arthur to embrace his royal duties and take his rightful place on the throne.

While a fair amount of the Aquaman trailer shows scenes set on land, be it near a shore, in a town or (oddly) out of a plane, but make no mistake, a lot of this movie will be set underwater. And thankfully, the Atlantean kingdoms are a visual spectacle, taking audiences to a "world" that hasn't been visited in other superhero movies. Nevertheless, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Black Manta, Aquaman's greatest nemesis from the comics. Black Manta has a very distinct look, and we can all breathe a sigh of relief that said look has been retained for Aquaman. His helmet even shoots energy beams! It remains to be seen if Black Manta will be allied with Orm in Aquaman or if he will be carrying out his own agenda, but it's good to see that no steps were taken to tone down his costume. Overall, this trailer does a good job of showing that Aquaman's general premise and the blockbuster action we have to look forward to.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman dives into theaters on December 21, so keep checking back with CinemaBlend for continuing coverage. Last years awards buzz for Alfonso Cuarons Netflix film Roma rocked the boat in Hollywood for a number of reasons. One, because it started a kerfuffle between Netflix and theater chains about their 90-day exclusivity window. Two: it began a conversation about whether films produced by streaming services should be eligible for Oscar nominations and also sparked the alleged Spielberg vs. Netflix conflict.

According to legendary E.T. director, the latter has been blown out of proportion in the media in recent months. Steven Spielberg penned an email to the New York Times to clarify his comments on streaming services. Take a look:

I want people to find their entertainment in any form or fashion that suits them. Big screen, small screen what really matters to me is a great story and everyone should have access to great stories. However, I feel people need to have the opportunity to leave the safe and familiar of their lives and go to a place where they can sit in the company of others and have a shared experience cry together, laugh together, be afraid together so that when its over they might feel a little less like strangers. I want to see the survival of movie theaters. I want the theatrical experience to remain relevant in our culture.

Steven Spielberg also noted that his gripes werent with Netflix specifically about producing movies for home viewing, but the various theater chains who have turned the streaming giant away from showing their original films because of the 90-day exclusivity window theaters have been sticking to. Hes advocating for the continuation of the theater experience more than anything, though his comments have previously been characterized as an attack on Netflix and streaming as a medium.

When major chains AMC and Regal rejected the idea of showing Roma in their theaters because of the fact it would be available to stream before the three month period, the filmmaker actually called them up and asked them if theyd make an exception and they refused. Spielberg is only opting for streaming services, theater chains and traditional studios to work together to preserve moviegoing over couch-potatoing. Heres some of his comments from his infamous speech in February that was part of the conflict:

I hope all of us really continue to believe that the greatest contributions we can make as filmmakers is to give audiences the motion picture theatrical experience. Im a firm believer that movie theaters need to be around forever.

It was said that Spielberg was heading to a board meeting with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday night to change the rule about the current eligibility of streaming service films to be nominated for Oscars, the filmmaker did not attend and no amendments to the rules were made.

While Steven Spielberg has been vocal about his ongoing intentions to preserve the theater experience, his production company Amblin is working on three television series with streaming platforms: Amazon Primes Cortes and Moctezuma, Apples Amazing Stories and Hulus Animaniacs reboot. He is also a Netflix subscriber himself who has binged original content such as The Haunting of Hill House.

The ongoing conflict here seems to primarily be between streaming services and theater chains. Recently reports that Netflix may buy its own theater (The Egyptian on Hollywood Boulevard) could signal the start of an expansion in the way the platform does business and makes their films accessible.

Yep, Aquaman Is Officially The Highest-Grossing DCEU Movie To Date

He did it! The one-time Entourage joke is now the biggest box office hero of the DCEU. Aquaman just showed them all.

Thanks to massive love from the international box office, Aquaman is now officially top dog in the DC Extended Universe. As of this weekend, director James Wan's movie will pass $900 million worldwide. That puts it well past current DCEU leader Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which boasts $873.6 million.

Of course, we're talking overall worldwide, not just the domestic box office. Aquaman just opened here on December 21, and has picked up $238 million as of Saturday, January 5. It has been playing overseas for quite some time, picking up an impressive $650 million at foreign markets. So far, the total is $887,620,880. Again, that will pass $900M once tomorrow's weekend box office report comes in.

But check out the worldwide comparisons to the other DCEU-ers (via Box Office Mojo):

1. Aquaman -- $887.6M (total foreign + domestic) $238.3M (just domestic)2. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice -- $873.6M (total) $330.4M (domestic)3. Ouch to Justice League. Aquaman isn't even done, and it's possible it will indeed hit $1 billion. I was skeptical when that speculation came out, but we shall see. It would obviously be the first DCEU film to hit $1 billion, and be a major breakthrough for DC/WB.

Aquaman had the lowest domestic opening weekend of the DCEU group, but that was just based on the two-day weekend; Aquaman was further boosted by previews, plus Christmas and New Year's weeks with families off from work and school. It made GREAT use of a year with no Star Wars movie as competition, and Lucasfilm has to be kicking itself for that.

Plus, Aquaman opened first overseas and had a huge showing -- especially in China -- and it rode that buzz into its U.S. release. The international box office alone was going to make Aquaman one of the top DCEU films, and now it's looking like it will at least pass both Justice League (it already has) and Man of Steel (soon) at the domestic box office.

Aquaman will probably end its domestic run somewhere in the $300M zone, as predicted after its opening. Good enough to possibly rival everyone but Wonder Woman. But now we know it is the overall champ and nothing can take that away from it -- for now.

Warner Bros. must be so proud. Aquaman was instrumental in giving the studio itsbest year at the box office yet in 2018. And now Aquaman is off to a great start, leading the way in 2019. (Not to be a Debbie Downer, but it won't last the whole year. Disney is coming.)

Shazam! doesn't look like it's going to rival Aquaman for DCEU domination, but it doesn't need to. After that, we have Wonder Woman 1984, Birds of Prey, whatever is happening with the Suicide Squad sequel, plus non-DCEU DC films like The Joker and The Batman, etc.

And then obviously we can expect Aquaman 2. James Wan said he's not contracted for that at this point, similar to Patty Jenkins not having a sequel contract right after Wonder Woman. So show James Wan the money, and get Jason Momoa back in the water, 'cause a sequel is just about inevitable. (Feel free to not bring back Pitbull.)

If you're a comic book reader, it's often fascinating to see how characters you've enjoyed on the printed page for years are adapted for a movie. So just imagine how it feels for a comic book writer or artist to see a character that they created be brought to life in a theatrical setting. That's just what writer Don McGregor was able to do with the recent release of Black Panther, as several of the Black Panther characters he created for Marvel Comics, including Killmonger, were major players in the movie. Like a lot of people across the world, McGregor enjoyed Black Panther immensely, saying:

Michael B. Jordan was great as Killmonger. The thing that actually struck me the most was that I love Chadwick [Boseman] as T'Challa. I always thought that T'Challa should have a quiet dignity. He doesn't have to raise his voice, he walks in the room and he's the guy. And if trouble's gonna happen, you want him there to come in and back your play. To have Angela Bassett playing Ramonda, another character I created, was so beautiful.

Don McGregor joined Marvel Comics in late 1972 as a proofreader, but he quickly became a writer and editor for the company. In 1973, he starting working on the Jungle Action book, where he penned a 13-issue tale titled "Panther's Rage," which introduced Erik Killmonger to the Marvel universe. Decades later, McGregor was among the first to see Michael B. Jordan's performance as the MCU's Killmonger when he attended the Black Panther world premiere, and he was pleased with what he saw. McGregor was also surprised to see that Black Panther had included one of the wildest moments he ever wrote for T'Challa: the hero tackling a rhino.

As for what elements from his stories he'd like to see included in future Black Panther movies, Don McGregor informed Nerdist that it's important that the future MCU entries stay true to the radical nature of the original Black Panther stories, as well as honor the people who created this material. As McGregor put it:

I would like them to capture the spirit of what the books were about and what we hoped to achieve. Most importantly, that the legacy of people like [artists] Rich Buckler and Billy Graham, who are both gone now, be kept alive.

It's safe to say that Black Panther will go down as one of the MCU's most successful movies. Besides earning numerous positive reviews, it's a commercial powerhouse, and will cross the $500 million mark globally today. While Marvel hasn't officially announced Black Panther 2 yet, with a performance like that, one would imagine that Marvel won't pass up on the opportunity to deliver a sequel.
