Should Triple Frontier Get A Sequel? Let's Talk This Out

At the end of J.C. Chandor's Triple Frontier, the events that transpired during the film are brought to a seemingly tidy end. But during that ending, there are a couple of key pieces of information that stand out as potential threads for a sequel. While any film can leave the door open for another installment of adventure, it's not always the best course of action to follow up with another escapade.

It's a complicated matter, because while Triple Frontier doesn't seem like the type of film to get a sequel, there's enough left hanging that would make for an intriguing follow up if it was done correctly. With that in mind, it's time to start delving into whether or not this action-drama should continue, or if stolen cash is best left where it lies. Let's start things off by discussing the ending of the film.

What Happens At The End Of Triple FrontierAfter the heist that Oscar Isaac's Santiago, and the rest of his Triple Frontier team have undertaken, the film puts them through the ringer. A series of troubles and tribulations pressures the team into some bad decisions involving an overloaded helicopter, a farming community in the Andes, and a trek through a treacherous mountain range that leads to the ultimate run for the coast. In the end, only one member of the team is killed Ben Affleck's Tom.

As a result, the surviving teammates donate their shares of the remaining money that didn't get lost in the Andes to Tom's family. Feeling guilty for his death, and wanting to provide for his family, each man tears up his paperwork to deposit their shares, and allows their banker to deposit it all into the same account. After which, everyone goes their separate ways, saying a somber but heartfelt goodbye.

Just as the film is ready to let Isaac and Charlie Hunnam's William ride off into their respective sunsets, with Santiago ready to reunite with his girlfriend / intel source Yovanna in Australia, William slips him a piece of paper with important information. That info happens to be the GPS co-ordinates to a spot where the team dumped a ton of cash in order to lighten their load. As Santiago walks into the crowd on a warm, tropical day, the film fades to black.

The Case For A SequelThe continued adventures of the Triple Frontier team have two key components on their side: the fact that Santiago was given the co-ordinates with the express purpose of possibly recovering the money, and his intended reunion with Yovanna after the heist went sideways. So, with a potential second act in the saga that J.C. Chandor co-wrote and directed, there's already enough components here to make for a basic sequel.

What makes a second excursion to the Triple Frontier even more exciting is something that Yovanna said to Santiago as they parted mid-way through the film. After stealing the money from the infamous drug dealer that they were robbing, she tells Santiago that it's not just that particular dealer's money in their hands. There are others who threw their funds in with his, and they're going to come looking for every penny missing.

Keeping all of this in mind, there's one of two ways this could go. One scenario is that the Triple Frontier survivors could recover the money for their own needs, as it's tucked away in a nice and secret spot for them to make a lovely retirement fund out of. The other, more probable scenario, would see those other drug dealers coming back to demand their money be returned; leaving the crew to figure out how to score the remaining $5 million that was donated to Tom's family. Both sound good, but are they enough to go forward? Let's look at the other side of the coin.

The Case Against A SequelWhile there's two good concepts for a Triple Frontier followup, there's still a solid case for not going ahead with any sort of return trips to the danger visited upon its protagonists. And that case comes from the fact that after all of the action that Santiago and his team had seen in Triple Frontier, it's not very likely that they would want to live through that sort of thing again. It all comes down to the approach to the original film, and how well it would mesh with any potential sequel.

Honestly, the grounded approach that J.C. Chandor and co-writer Mark Boal took in telling the story of Triple Frontier feels like it'd be at home with the ambiguity in the film's final reel. It's a movie that doesn't absolutely need to prolong itself beyond where it's already been, because the overriding lesson seems to be that if these soldiers hadn't pushed their luck as far as they had, they'd all be alive and richer than their wildest dreams.

In service of that message, another round of Triple Frontier action would seem like a slap in the face of that first round's overarching message. And as any fan of '80s action dramas will tell you, not every series has the luck that Rambo did; and even if it did, there's always the chance that things will devolve into mindless propaganda before all is said and done.

Where We StandTriple Frontier is a film that could very easily lend itself to a sequel, and that sequel could be really good. There's room for improvement with the foundation of the original, and the hooks are clear enough to bring the series into a reasonable future. But, even with the ideas presented, there's a risk that such a sequel would be a really bad idea. The result of this whole exercise is a pro sequel outcome, so long as those involved keep their heads on straight during development. In fact, bringing in J.C. Chandor and Mark Boal would be required at this point, as Chandor knows the characters and Boal knows how to bring the action.

There's No One More Pumped For Solo: A Star Wars Story Than Solo Cups

Ever since the name Solo was chosen for the upcoming Han Solo film, there has been one company that has been pretty pleased about the development, and that company would be none other than Solo, the makers of the infamous-- and often red--cups used for a variety of gatherings and, of course, drinking games. Although Solo cups are not being integrated into the movie, Disney does seem to be partnering with Solo ahead of the premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story. And no one is more pumped about it than Solo Cup:

There are a lot of reasons a pairing up of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Solo of the cup variety makes sense. First and foremost, there's the natural name pairing. Then, there's the fact that even the logo for Star Wars' upcoming movie and the red cup brand resemble one another, although Solo has the added artistic flourish of making the middle of the o's in Solo resemble cups. Solo had previously said that it was pumped Disney chose the name Solo: A Star Wars Story even before an actual partnership was announced.

Month ago, brand manager Becca Bikoff even told DNA Info:

We're delighted our Solo fans are having fun with the correlation with our brand. Unfortunately Han Solo lives in a galaxy far, far away, so don't expect to see the Solo cup integrated into the movie. However, we do have plans to 'SOLObrate' the new trilogy in our own way. Stay tuned!

Now, Solo has been announced as a partnering brand along with Denny's Corp, Esurance, General Mills, Nissan, Symantec Corp, per Deadline. The Solo pairing is likely the most natural of all of the company's working with Solo: A Star Wars Story, especially since the first supposed look at Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo came on a cup earlier in the movie's production, although it was later deemed to be unofficial. Beyond that, we previously learned that the movie initially went with the working title "Red Cup," which is really funny.

We are well beyond the time when Phil Lord and Chris Miller were involved with Solo: A Star Wars Story and we are also far past the days when the movie was known as Red Cup. In fact, Disney and Lucasfilm are gearing up to release the next standalone Star Wars movie and you'll be able to catch it in theaters starting on May 25. Star Wars: Episode 9 Rumors - Will Luke Skywalker Be Ridiculously Powerful?

WARNING: The following is mostly rumor and speculation, but if you don't want to know anything at all about Star Wars: Episode IX, I'd make the jump to hyperspace out of here!

We are about a year away from Star Wars: Episode IX and the end of the Skywalker Saga, and to this point, trailers, teasers, official photos, plot details or even a title for the film are all nonexistent. But even without any official information, this is Star Wars, and thus there are rumors and theories abound.

So as we wait to see what J.J. Abrams has in store, it's time to take a look at the various rumors and theories out there and talk out how likely they are to happen, and what effect they would have on the film and the franchise as a whole if they did.

After examining Admiral Hux's potentially shifting loyalties last time, it's now time to turn the focus to the hero of this franchise, one Luke Skywalker. A rumor from a couple of months back posited that our favorite space wizard would be ridiculously powerful in Star Wars: Episode IX. How powerful? Well, according to the rumor, the upcoming film will see the Jedi Master bringing down a Star Destroyer.

Yeah, that's PRETTY powerful. There are a couple of different aspects to this rumor and therefore different reasons to think that it will or will not come to pass, but first, let's consider where we left Luke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

There is an argument to be made that we already saw an ultra-powerful Luke Skywalker in Rian Johnson's film. Luke's display of Force-projection, casting his image across the galaxy to confront his nephew and provide the spark and the distraction that the Resistance needed, was a display of ability and power unlike any we had seen before.

However, I think this is not what many fans were hoping for from Luke, as this power was not an offensive use of the Force. And the fact that it literally killed him to do it kind of took the wind out of the sails of this badass level of power. We know that Mark Hamill is returning for Star Wars: Episode IX, so that provides another opportunity for Luke to do something big. The question is if he will and what he would do.

There are two angles to this rumor, one broad and one specific. The specific angle is that Luke Skywalker will bring down a Star Destroyer in the next film. This is immediately complicated by the obvious fact that Luke is currently dead and one with the Force like his father before him. Right away, that is a point in the 'not gonna happen' column for this rumor.

Luke's death leaves only a few possibilities that would allow this rumor to actually play out: Luke isn't dead or is brought back to life, we will see this in flashbacks or Luke will do this as a Force Ghost.

To the first possibility, while I can see J.J. Abrams retconning Rey's parentage (and think he will) and giving backstory on Snoke, I really don't see him undoing Luke's death, either through explaining how he is still alive or having him return like Gandalf at the turn of the tide. It would require a lot of exposition, and while it might appease those who dislike The Last Jedi, it might also alienate those who love it.

However, the introduction of flashbacks to the Saga in Star Wars: The Force Awakens does provide an avenue through which J.J. Abrams can have a living Luke showing what he is capable of without undercutting what Rian Johnson did.

According to the rumor, Episode IX will show a battle over a sandy planet between TIE fighters and X-Wings that sees a black-cloaked figure with a mechanical hand reaching out and bringing a Star Destroyer to the ground. A scene such as this is already referenced in canon in Ken Liu's Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi: The Legends of Luke Skywalker. That book sees Luke Skywalker, shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi, appear in hologram form on the bridge of the Star Destroyer before crashing it on Jakku.

It sounds as though the story from the book and this rumored scene could be one in the same. The Force Awakens showed Rey exploring that downed Star Destroyer and flashbacks in Episode IX could show us how that came to be. Such a flashback could also perhaps give us some further connection between Rey and Luke on Jakku.

If we are to see Luke bring down a Star Destroyer in a display of awesome power, this seems to be the most likely way it will happen.

The last possibility is that Luke will take the Star Destroyer off the board as a Force Ghost. The Last Jedi showed Yoda impacting the physical realm as a Force Ghost, so it is clear that Force Ghosts have more power than we once thought. Luke did also tell Kylo Ren "See you around kid," implying he would still be messing with him after death.

Nevertheless, it doesn't seem likely to me that a Force Ghost Luke will bring down the Star Destroyer simply because having Luke do that while dead would cheapen his death if he could still do that much damage from beyond the grave. The whole point of the end of The Last Jedi is that even though he is no longer a part of the fight, the Resistance will go on. If anyone will be showing major Force powers in the 'present' of the story, it should be Rey.

If we ignore the specific rumor of 'Luke brings down a Star Destroyer' and just ask the broader question of 'Will Luke Skywalker be ridiculously powerful in Episode IX?' I think the answer will be yes.

I do think Luke will show at least Yoda-level Force Ghost powers in Episode IX, but more than that, the possibility of flashbacks leaves the story wide open to show Luke's astonishing level of power post-Return of the Jedi. And I think that's exactly what J.J. Abrams will do.

The director has apparently been tasked with course-correcting the Star Wars Saga, and for many Star Wars fans, even those who liked The Last Jedi, we were expecting to see more out of Luke in this sequel trilogy. Giving us a badass Luke might be one way J.J. Abrams tries to fix Star Wars.

In the decades since Return of the Jedi, we've been imagining the Force user Luke became and have been eager to see him, green lightsaber in hand, cutting through First Order troops or the Knights of Ren, or doing something on the level of bringing down a Star Destroyer.

J.J. Abrams is a Star Wars fan, and he didn't really get to use the franchise's hero in The Force Awakens. It will always be a question of 'What if?' if we don't see Luke Skywalker really letting loose and showing the extent of his power. Flashbacks provide the perfect opportunity to show us the Luke we've always imagined, and whether he specifically brings down a Star Destroyer or not, I'm thinking we will see a ridiculously powerful Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode IX.

Depending what Luke does and how he does it in Episode IX, it could have the effect of either devaluing The Last Jedi or simply bringing a fan service-y end to this trilogy and Saga. If we do see an ultra-powerful Luke, it would give fans something they've wanted to witness, while also having Luke, who began this story in A New Hope, go out with a bang in the Skywalker Saga's final chapter.
