Over the years, for better and for worse, director M. Night Shyamalan has become known for the twist endings in his films. The director truly outdid himself though with Split, when the ending of that 2016 film revealed that it took place in the same universe as Shyamalan's 2000 film, Unbreakable. That reveal, and Split's success, gave birth to M. Night Shyamalan's next film, Glass, which will unite the characters from those two films for a superhero clash unlike anything we've seen before. Glass is almost in the can and as the film nears completion it seems to be giving director M. Night Shyamalan all the feels, as he explained on social media:
In editing room for final week of Glass. Pass thirteen. Final CGI coming in, last tiny trims, credits, last cues... getting emotional.
It sounds as though Glass is just about ready to wrap, even including the CGI work. M. Night Shyamalan is now basically seeing what the final film will look like and what audiences will see when it is released and that seems to have had an effect on him. A lot of work goes into any film and it is a long process that the filmmakers put a lot of themselves into, so coming to the end of the film has to be an emotional experience. Endings are often sad and as he spends his last week working on Glass, M. Night Shyamalan may be feeling a sense of happiness and accomplishment over the art he has created, while also feeling a bit of melancholy that the journey of this film is over. Cue emotions.
You can see why finishing this movie might mean something extra special to M. Night Shyamalan too. From the outside looking in, Unbreakable came when the director was riding a high after The Sixth Sense. A lot of people really like Unbreakable and that lead into Signs, which was also well received. M. Night Shyamalan then hit a major rough patch with his subsequent efforts, culminating in the nadir of After Earth and The Last Airbender. The director received better reviews for The Visit and the pilot of Wayward Pines, but it was Split that really announced that M. Night Shyamalan's comeback. So Glass should bring this journey full circle back to when an M. Night Shyamalan film was something of an event. Glass is the crescendo of mythology the director first introduced almost two decades ago and it is easily his most anticipated film in some time, maybe ever.
Beyond just how he feels about Glass nearing completion, M. Night Shyamalan's Twitter post is also encouraging because it lets us know that this movie is good to go and wasn't a rush job that will be in a race against time to meet its release date. Hopefully that bodes well for the final product and this sequel, years in the making, will live up to expectations.
