The Bohemian Rhapsody Cast Says Queen Deserves More Respect From Rock Fans

Quick, name the best rock band in history. Got your answer? We probably have a lot of Rolling Stones and Beatles answers. More than a few Led Zeppelin votes. Maybe even The Who. How far down do you think we go before you hit Queen? For some reason, they are not immediately thought of in a conversation like this, so when we interviewed the cast of Bohemian Rhapsody, we asked if Queen gets the respect that they deserved as a rock outfit, and co-star Gwilym Lee replied:

I don't know, perhaps not. Their music is just so universal. You hear it so often that I think the danger is that you take it for granted. And I think what's beautiful about this film is it actually forces you to address the idea of these songs being written for the first time, and what genius that took. They were the only band whose every member wrote a Number One single. They crossed all kinds of genres, all kinds of styles. And it's what gives their music such longevity.

As you will see now that Bohemian Rhapsody is in theaters, there was a time -- before we can remember -- when songs like "We Are The Champions" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" were not global hits. And as Gwilym Lee, who plays Queen guitarist Brian May in the movie, points out, even the guys in Queen thought Freddie Mercury was off the mark in his songwriting... for a time.

One thing going against Queen in this sense is that they didn't limit themselves to traditional rock. "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Radio Ga Ga" have distinct disco elements to them. "Under Pressure" is practically pop. Ben Hardy, who plays Roger Taylor in the movie, went on to explain:

The fact that their music transcends genre is why maybe they're not quite pigeonholed like some of those rock bands are. They are amazing. But you know, they're very much like, that's their thing. They're a great rock and roll band. Whereas Queen's more than that.

And that's why they are able to stand the test of time and appeal to so many different audiences. Some may like the harder edge of Queen. Some may appreciate their melodic vocals. It's all on display in Bohemian Rhapsody.

When Henry Cavill Wants To Play Superman Again

The DC Extended Universe is a tricky place. While only a handful of blockbusters has been released to the public, there have been a ton of projects announced to be in development. Besides Aquaman and Shazam!, which are actively filming, the future of the shared universe is uncertain. As such, it's unclear when we'll see some of our favorite characters, including Henry Cavill's Superman/Clark Kent. Cavill has starred in the most DC movies to date, and he was recently asked when he'd be returning to the blue and red. While he doesn't have a concrete timeline, Cavill revealed he'd like to reprise his role ASAP, saying:

I can't answer that definitively right now. But I'm hoping sooner rather than later. I've been talking to certain people and hopefully, we're going to start talking to other people who are responsible for making those calls. And we shall see.

While it's unclear if Superman will return in a Man of Steel sequel or another big ensemble project like Justice League, Henry Cavill certainly seems dedicated to playing his role in the shared universe. Considering how wishy washy Ben Affleck has appeared to be in the last year, this will no doubt be a relief to all the DC fans out there.

Henry Cavill's comments to Fandango seem to indicate that he's sticking with the DCEU for the long haul. Considering Man of Steel ended up jump starting the entire shared universe, Cavill's comments are certainly comforting. Zack Snyder was eventually given the freedom to expand his version of the DC universe, resulting in the ambitious but critically mixed additions of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Superman has been a major focus of the movies thus far, so it's good to know Cavill is planning on putting the cape back on.

Unfortunately, not al the leading players of the DC Extended Universe seem as determined to stick around for the long haul. Ben Affleck seems to be distancing himself from his role as Batman, starting with stepping down from directing the character's first solo movie. It seems like we may only get one or two more appearances with Affleck as Bruce Wayne, so the studio is going to have to pivot in order to keep Batman on the silver screen.

There has been plenty of talk around Man of Steel's possible sequel in the past year or so, with fans eager to see Henry Cavill's Superman get another solo movie. Plenty of directors' names have been tossed around, so Henry Cavill's determination to fly another day will no doubt help this process.

With that said, Brad Bird's Incredibles 2 is only rated PG, and while the lower rating implies to some that it's tailored to younger audiences, Bird wants all of us to know that it is definitely not a kids movie, and that animated films, in general, are not inherently kids movies. Responding to a fan who complained about the foul language in the film on social media, Bird opened up about this topic and explained:

For some, an animated film with a PG rating inherently implies that it's aimed at kids. However, that's not how Brad Bird feels about the situation. Incredibles 2 features slightly stronger language than one might expect from an animated PG movie, and while that didn't sit well with one specific fan, Bird's tweet emphasizes the fact that Incredibles 2 casts a wide audience net and shouldn't be considered merely a kids movie that only plays to the younger members of the audience. By his own estimation, thinking that a film is a kids movie just because it is animated and PG is a false way to look at the medium.

The swearing is not the only element of Incredibles 2 that pushes the PG label. Unlike many other films produced under the Disney or Pixar banners, the violence is reasonably visceral (at least by PG standards) and doesn't shy away from ideas like death or murder in the way that it treats its story. Moreover, there are sequences in the movie in which characters openly drink alcohol while engaging in conversation with one another, which (at least by this writer's recollection) has seldom happened in previous Pixar movies.

Of course, those of us who are familiar with Brad Bird's work in the animated landscape shouldn't necessarily be surprised by this. Much like Incredibles 2, films like The Incredibles and The Iron Giant similarly dealt in mature themes that appealed to adults and children alike. These movies sometimes get classified in the kids movie category, but to look at them and assume that they're solely for children arguably feels like a miscalculation.

No matter what you think of the foul language used in Incredibles 2, it's hard to argue against the fact that the film has handily gone on to become a box office juggernaut since its debut.
